Polyimide (PI)-based tribological composites containing carbon fiber (CF), molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), and other solid lubricants have been extensively studied. However, the role of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in regulating interfacial interactions and wear mechanisms in PI/CF/MoS 2 systems remains insufficiently understood. In this study, the effects of h-BN incorporation on the mechanical and tribological behaviors of PI/CF/MoS 2 composites were systematically investigated through experimental characterization combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results revealed that h-BN addition improved hardness while reducing tensile strength and ductility due to the enhanced interfacial restriction and increased stress concentration. The tribological performance exhibited a non-monotonic dependence on h-BN content, with the optimal performance achieved at 5 wt.% h-BN. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses suggested that an appropriate h-BN content facilitated the formation of a relatively continuous transfer film, whereas excessive h-BN promoted filler agglomeration and interfacial degradation, leading to accelerated wear. Furthermore, MD simulations suggested that the reduced molecular mobility and fractional free volume at the optimal h-BN content were consistent with enhanced interfacial stability. The combined experimental and simulation results provide qualitative insights into the role of h-BN in regulating filler dispersion, interfacial interactions, and molecular chain dynamics. These findings establish a structure–property relationship for designing high-performance multi-filler PI-based tribological composites. Highlights Hexagonal boron nitride improves the hardness but reduces tensile strength. Friction and wear are minimized at 5 wt.% hexagonal boron nitride loading. Excess hexagonal boron nitride triggers agglomeration and abrasive wear. Molecular dynamics simulations corroborate experimental wear mechanisms.

A novel complex sizing containing PES and functionalized GO was prepared for improving interfacial adhesion of CF/PES composites. To achieve better dispersion of GO in sizing and improve the interfacial compatibility of composites, GO were covalently functionalized by 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl ether, which have similar chemical structures to PES matrix. SEM, dynamic contact angle and TGA tests showed that functionalized GO were closely attached to the CF surface, and the surface energy as well as the thermal stability of CF were greatly increased. Among all the sizings, PES/GO-DDS exhibited the best reinforcing effect, revealing a significant increase of 74.1% in IFSS and 40.1% in ILSS as compared with un-sized CF. Notably, the variation trend of mechanical properties was accordant with the interfacial strength . Moreover, the interface enhancement mechanisms were proposed, the increased interfacial adhesion was benefited from the positive effect of interface layer .

A novel copper/carbon nanotube/carbon fiber (Cu/CNT/CF) multiscale reinforcement was successfully achieved using a one-step electrophoretic deposition technique in which CNT was introduced via two techniques. Two stabilized electrolytes containing CNT of distinct charge character were prepared to investigate the effect of CNT to the thermal/electrical conductivity and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites. The positively charged CNT composites showed increases of 359.2%, 2761% and 34.5% for thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and the ILSS, respectively, in comparison with de-sized CF composites. Contrast with the two-step method, the preparation time of the one-step method has been shortened to one-fifth, and the connections between the Cu and CNT were compacted to improve the conductivity of the composites. Moreover, Cu/CNT/CF prepared according to the one-step method was highly compatible with vacuum-assisted resin infusion technology and provided a route for preparing multifunctional composites that could be easily scaled up.

A three-phase heterostructure composite CF/Co0.2Fe2.8O4/PANI with a layer by layer (LBL) structure was designed and synthesized for achieving improvement in electromagnetic (EM) wave attenuation of carbon fiber (CF). The structure and morphology analyses demonstrated the LBL structure of the absorber. The electromagnetic parameters of the absorber and wax composite were measured at 2–18 GHz to evaluate its EM wave attenuation performance. The three-phase heterostructures absorber CF/Co0.2Fe2.8O4/PANI demonstrated the highest attenuation effectiveness value of −38.2 dB (>99.9% attenuation) at 12.7 GHz with a thickness of 4.1 mm. Moreover, for CF/Co0.2Fe2.8O4/PANI, with an absorber thickness of 3.1–4.1 mm, the minimum RL values are all lower than −20 dB in Ku band. The excellent EM wave absorbency in the Ku band for CF/Co0.2Fe2.8O4/PANI results from the combined effect of magnetic loss and dielectric loss by introducing more phase onto CF. Considering the EM wave absorption performance and the effortless fabrication process, it is believable that by introducing more specially designed phases, the EM wave attenuation performance of CF can be significantly improved.

Development of an efficient cathode in advanced oxidation process is an important challenge. In this work, we synthesized a low-cost, high-catalytic-active and stable reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-Ce/WO 3 nanosheets (RCW) to modify carbon felt (CF) as cathode to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP) in electro-Fenton process. Compared to traditional heterogeneous electro-Fenton process, carbon black was substituted by RGO and poly tetra fluoroethylene was avoided to be used as binder. We found that RCW/CF cathode reached about 100% degradation efficiency of CIP after 1 h and 98.55% mineralization degree after 8 h. Meanwhile, it had a very high current density, about 2.5 times that of CF. RCW/CF cathode produced more O 2 − , H 2 O 2 and OH via one-electron reduction process (O 2 → O 2 - →H 2 O 2 ). The modified cathode kept a stable performance for high CIP degradation efficiency during 5 cycles. The introduction of RGO could promote electron transfer, and the adding of Ce into the WO 3 lattice provided superior conditions for the adsorption and activation of oxygen molecules, thus promoting the formation of active oxygen species on the surface of RCW. This novel RCW/CF composite is an efficient and promising electrode for removal of CIP in the wastewater.

Developing durable, effective and inexpensive electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucial for the advancement of water splitting as a solution to the energy shortage. In this study, nanospheres stacked into nanochains are successfully prepared by oxidative corrosive engineering, solvothermal, and following calcination process (Co-Cu 3 P/CF). The unique nanochain structure facilitates growing the specific surface area, thereby exposing plenitude active sites. The introduced phosphorus (P) and Co ions can alter the electronic characteristics of metal phosphides, not only can accelerate the electron transport of the catalysts, but speed up the reaction kinetics. Thus, the prepared Co-Cu 3 P/CF exhibits low overpotentials, with 240/84 mV, in alkaline media for OER/HER to attain 10 mA cm −2 . In alkaline freshwater/seawater, the self-assembled electrolyzer needs only 1.51/1.58 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . This work provides an approach for the preparation of high-performing and economical electrocatalysts.

Propose the “Ru-O-Co/Cu bridge structure” strategy to establish electronic coupling and a cooperative network, achieving multi-site synergistic catalysis. • In the acidic solution, at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the HER overpotential of Ru 2 /CoCu-LDH@CF is only 19.76 mV, with stability exceeding 300 h. • In the acidic solution, the dual electrodes OWS voltage is as low as 1.35 V. Under the “backdrop of the “dual carbon” strategy steering global energy structure transformation, green hydrogen—an ideal clean energy carrier featuring zero carbon emissions and high energy density—requires large-scale production to boost renewable energy utilization and attain carbon neutrality. To address this challenge, this work, aligned with industrial demands for low-cost green hydrogen, fabricated low-ruthenium-doped Ruₓ/CoCu-LDH@CF (x = 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 mmol) in situ on conductive copper foam (CF) via synergistic effect. Ruthenium doping effectively elevates the material’s electrical conductivity while regulating the electronic configuration of CoCu-LDH. The Ruₓ/CoCu-LDH@CF catalyst demonstrates outstanding activity across the all pH range: In 1 M KOH, the Ruₓ/CoCu-LDH@CF electrode requires only 58.6 mV and 202.4 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm⁻² in both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively, and maintains stable for over 300 h. In 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the HER overpotential of Ru 2 /CoCu-LDH@CF is only 19.76 mV, the overall water splitting (OWS) voltage is as low as 1.35 V. In 1 M PBS, the Tafel slope is as low as 25.01 mV dec⁻¹, signifying fast reaction kinetics. This superior catalytic behavior stems primarily from the Ru-O-Co/Cu bridging structure, which facilitates efficient electron transfer. This advancement offers material support for the efficient, stable production of green hydrogen, further advancing renewable energy-driven electrochemical water splitting toward practical application. It carries substantial theoretical and practical value for curbing carbon emissions, aiding the realization of “dual carbon” targets, and building a clean energy system. Enhancing the interfacial heat resistance between carbon fibers (CF) and high-performance thermoplastics is critical for their high-temperature forming and applications. This study designed and synthesized three heterocyclic poly(aryl ether nitrile sulfone) (PAENS) sizing agents—poly(phthalazinone ether nitrile sulfone), poly(bisphthalazinone ether nitrile sulfone) (PBPENS), and poly(sulfone-type bisphthalazinone nitrile sulfone)—all incorporating strongly polar cyano groups. These agents were applied to CF via a simple impregnation method to improve interfacial properties of CF reinforced poly(bisphthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (CF/PBPESK) composites. The PAENS sizing agents, containing sulfone groups and heterocyclic structures, showed good compatibility with the PBPESK matrix, and their different heterocyclic structures imparted varying molecular chain flexibility and glass transition temperatures ( T g ). At room temperature, the PBPENS sizing modified CF/PBPESK (PBPENS@CF/PBPESK) composite demonstrated the most significant improvement, exhibiting a 43% increase in interfacial shear strength and a 32% increase in interlaminar shear strength compared with the desized CF/PBPESK composite. At elevated temperatures, the PBPENS@CF/PBPESK also exhibited the highest flexural strength and retention rate. The PBPENS, balancing molecular rigidity (via heterocyclic units) with flexibility (via ether bonds), and matching the matrix in structural similarity and T g , achieved excellent interface strengthening effects. This work provides crucial guidance for designing high-temperature-resistant thermoplastic sizing agents demanding applications.

Carbon fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic polymer composites (CFRHPTPC) generally suffer from insufficient interlaminar toughness and susceptibility to delamination failure. This study employed coaxial electrospinning combined with an etching process to fabricate an electrospun fiber veil featuring exposed CNT structures on its surface. The electrospun fiber veils enhance the interfacial bonding strength between the electrospun fibers and the resin matrix through the synergistic effect of shell resin diffusion and mechanical interlocking of CNT. This approach effectively overcomes the low interfacial bonding strength caused by the surface inertness of high-temperature-resistant electrospun fiber, significantly enhancing the interlaminar toughness and in-plane mechanical properties of CF/PPESK composites. This study further elucidated the diffusion and bonding strength of the resins at the molecular level through molecular dynamics simulations, and quantitatively characterized the diffusion thickness via AFM-Nano IR. The results indicate that the G IC,ini and G IC,prop of the modified composite increased to 1195 J/m 2 and 1300 J/m 2 (48% and 43% increases, respectively), while the maximum G IIC reached 2265 J/m 2 (131% increase). Additionally, the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and ILSS of CF/PPESK composites reached up to 1505 MPa, 114 GPa, and 70 MPa, respectively (increases of 25%, 21%, and 13%). These performance enhancements were attributed to the multiscale synergistic reinforcement mechanism at the electrospun fiber-resin interface, achieving simultaneous optimization of toughness and strength in the composite. This study provides novel insights and methodologies for synergistic reinforcement and toughening of CFRHPTPC through interlayer design of high-performance composites.

Efficient generation, transport, and utilization of plasmon-induced hot carriers remain fundamental challenges in the development of photoresponsive electrocatalysts. Herein, a hierarchical Au nanoparticle (NP)-decorated NiFe layered double hydroxide/Ni(TCNQ) 2 heterostructure supported on copper foam (Au NPs–NiFe LDH–Ni(TCNQ) 2 /CF) with a rationally designed conductive Ni(TCNQ) 2 interlayer is engineered, and the Au NPs size is systematically optimized to maximize plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic performance. The conductive Ni(TCNQ) 2 nanorods serve as both electron-transport pathways and structural scaffolds enabling the growth of ultrathin NiFe LDH nanosheets, while plasmonic Au NPs enable light-driven electronic modulation. The integration of these components establishes efficient pathways for charge generation, separation, and transfer, thereby improving the utilization efficiency of plasmon-generated carriers. Notably, a systematic size-dependent investigation identifies 5-nm Au NPs as the optimal plasmonic configuration, exhibiting the strongest localized surface plasmon resonance enhancement. Under light irradiation, the optimized catalyst achieves an additional overpotential reduction of 22 mV at 100 mA cm −2 and a decreased Tafel slope of 60.47 mV dec −1 , highlighting the critical role of NP dimensions in regulating hot-carrier generation and interfacial charge-transfer efficiency. Importantly, the synergistic interaction between plasmon-induced electronic excitation and conductive interlayer engineering effectively promotes charge transport across the heterointerface and enhances the overall electrocatalytic process. This study provides new insights into the rational design of plasmon-enhanced electrocatalysts and offers a versatile strategy for integrating hot-carrier modulation with conductive interface engineering in solar-driven energy conversion systems.

Constructing a robust interfacial electric field is crucial for efficient spatial separation and directional migration of photogenerated carriers, which further boosts the performance of photocatalytic systems. In this study, a novel CF-supported SnS 2 /UiO-66-NH 2 high-low junction with intimate interface was fabricated via an in-situ solvothermal process. The optimal CF@SnS 2 /UiO-66-NH 2 -2 catalyst shows the best photocatalytic efficiency of 99.5% Cr(VI) removal at pH of 2.0 and nearly complete E. coli inactivation within 150 min, revealing its good photocatalytic redox capability. Moreover, the as-prepared composite possesses remarkable stability and desirable recycling performance. Mechanism analysis reveals that the intense internal electric field (IEF) and energy band bending are pivotal for promoting the separation and migration of charge carriers in the CF@SnS 2 /UiO-66-NH 2 high-low junction. Optimizing the interfacial adhesion in carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites is crucial for their mechanical performance, yet conventional enhancement strategies often face limitations in thermal stability, compatibility, and environmental impact. To overcome these challenges, a novel aqueous poly(aryl ether ketone)-based sizing agent (FPEKC), functionalized with trifluoromethyl (-CF 3 ) and phthalide moieties, was designed and synthesized through molecular engineering. The synthesized FPEKC exhibited outstanding thermal stability (T -5 % = 500.45 °C), ensuring excellent structural integrity throughout typical composite processing conditions (∼380 °C). The environmentally sustainable, water-based FPEKC-GO sizing agent prepared via an emulsion-solvent evaporation technique formed uniformly dispersed nanoparticles with an average diameter of approximately 60 nm. The intrinsic structural compatibility between FPEKC and the PEEK matrix facilitated extensive molecular diffusion and interchain entanglement at the interface. Additionally, the introduction of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets into the FPEKC slurry established robust chemical interactions at the fiber-matrix interface, including hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking, as well as nanoscale mechanical interlocking, achieving multi-scale interface enhancement. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the CF/PEEK composite material was remarkably enhanced by 65.56 %, reaching a value of 92.38 MPa. Furthermore, the composite sizing agent simultaneously improved the tensile strength of individual carbon fiber filaments by 5.56 %, effectively mitigating interfacial defects and stress concentrations. This research demonstrates an innovative multiscale interface engineering strategy, providing new insights and practical methodologies for developing environmentally friendly, high-performance CF/PEEK composites.
