Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as new photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution have aroused considerable interest over the past few years. However, most of COF-based photocatalysts require expensive and rare Pt co-catalysts to achieve a high hydrogen evolution rate. Here, a series of Tp-Pa-2-COF-based photocatalyst materials with porous 2D conductive metal–organic framework (MOF) Cu3(HHTP)2 as a noble metal-free co-catalyst are successfully prepared by an easy handling and green mechano-chemical method. Remarkably, after optimizing the ratio of the COF and MOF, the Tp-Pa-2/Cu3(HHTP)2 hybrid composite with a mass ratio of 3 : 1 exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 7.71 mmol h−1 g−1 under visible-light irradiation, while the hydrogen evolution rate of the pure Tp-Pa-2 is only 0.026 mmol h−1 g−1. Based on the detailed experiments and calculations, the improved performance can be mainly explained by the porous crystalline Cu3(HHTP)2 co-catalyst in the resulting composites efficiently promoting the utilization rate of the photogenerated charge-carriers, thus contributing to the high hydrogen generation performance.

Luminescent covalent organic frameworks (LCOFs) with large π-conjugated system were a family of crystalline porous materials with promising applications. However, the actual application and quenching mechanisms of the LCOFs with dual-functionality remain poor understood. Here, a micro-mesoporous luminescent covalent organic framework (LCOF-DT) with high crystallinity and good stability was prepared by the solvothermal method using 1, 3, 5-tri-(4-aminophenyl) benzene and 2, 5-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde as monomers through Schiff base condensation reaction. The LCOF-DT exhibited not only a good sensitivity and colorimetric visualization for water in conventional organic solvents over a relatively broad linear range (0 %–50 %) but also showed exceptional fluorescent recognition capability for vitamin K1, even in the presence of 17 different competing substrates. Additionally, a sensitive, specific, rapid, and practical fluorescent method for vitamin K1 detection in the commercially vitamin K1 tablets was developed. Based on the aforementioned research, designing covalent organic frameworks with multifunctional fluorescent response would be a tendency in the further application of detection technology.

Thorium, as a potential nuclear fuel for the next generation of thorium-based molten salt reactors, holds significant environmental and economic promise compared to current uranium-based atomic reactors. However, a large amount of thorium-containing wastewater is generated during operation of thorium-based reactors. Therefore, removing Th (IV) from wastewater is a critical step in advancing clean energy, mitigating radioactive contamination, and promoting sustainable nuclear fuel practices. In this research, we successfully synthesized a sp 2 -carbon conjugated organic framework (sp 2 -c-COF) (DFB-TMT COF), which exhibits ultrafast adsorption kinetics (∼3 min), high adsorption capacity (377.35 mg g −1 ), excellent selectivity (K d =4.82×10 3 mL g −1 ) and recycling ability (≥ 90 %) for thorium ions owing its well-organized one-dimensional pore channels with highly chemically stable and abundant nitrogen-containing adsorption sites. These results indicate that DFB-TMT COF is a promising functional adsorbent for the efficient recovery of thorium ions from thorium-containing wastewater.

A new detection platform based on a hydroxylated covalent organic framework (COF) integrated with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) was constructed and used for detecting adrenergic receptor agonists (ARAs) residues in milk. The hydroxylated COF was prepared by polymerization of tris(4-aminophenyl)amine and 1,3,5-tris(4-formyl-3-hydroxyphenyl)benzene and applied to solid-phase extraction (SPE) of ARAs. This hydroxylated COF was featured with hierarchical flower-like morphology, easy preparation, and copious active adsorption sites. The adsorption model fittings and molecular simulation were applied to explore the potential adsorption mechanism. This detection platform was suitable for detecting four α 2 - and five β 2 -ARAs residues in milk. The linear ranges of the ARAs were from 0.25 to 50 µg·kg −1 ; the intra-day and the inter-day repeatability were in the range 2.9–7.9% and 2.0–10.1%, respectively. This work demonstrates this hydroxylated COF has great potential as SPE cartridge packing, and provides a new way to determine ARAs residues in milk. Graphical Abstract

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are effective materials for water treatment membranes due to their tunable pore structures and high compatibility. While composite modification strategies combining plant polyphenol tannic acid (TA)-Fe³⁺ and COFs show great promise for TFC membranes, they typically involve organic solvents or complex pre-modification of the fillers. In this study, a green, fully-aqueous layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly strategy was employed to prepare TA-Fe(COF-LZU1)/PES membranes. By exploiting the inherent synergy between the rigid crystalline channels of COF-LZU1 and the adhesive TA-Fe network, this approach directly utilizes pristine COF-LZU1 without secondary modification. Unlike conventional methods, the entire process avoids organic solvents, offering a highly sustainable technical alternative. The incorporation of COF-LZU1 significantly enhanced the membrane surface properties, with surface roughness increasing from 17.0 ± 2.2 nm to 43.8 ± 8.5 nm and the water contact angle decreasing from 77.0 ± 1.6° to 20.0 ± 1.0°, thereby substantially improving the membrane’s hydrophilicity. The TA-Fe(COF-LZU1)/PES membrane achieved a pure water permeance of 35.85 L·m - ²·h - ¹·bar - ¹, representing a 11.5% increase over the TA-Fe/PES membrane. It exhibited excellent separation performance, achieving high rejections of 98.3% for Direct Red 80, and further demonstrated robust stability in mixed dye/salt solutions. In five-cycle bovine serum albumin (BSA) tests, the membrane exhibited improved antifouling durability, yielding a flux recovery ratio of 75.5%. Additionally, it operated stably across a pH range of 4–8. This green self-assembly approach provides a practical strategy for preparing composite membranes for dye wastewater treatment.

While conventional polymeric gas separation membranes are limited by the inherent permeability-selectivity trade-off, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) often suffer from poor interfacial compatibility and non-selective void defects. Herein, rigid flaky polyimide (PI)-type covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were solvothermally synthesized using 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). The obtained COFs were adopted as functional fillers and blended into hydroxyl-containing polyimide (HPI) precursor derived from 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane (6FAP) and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) to prepare thermally rearranged (TR) MMMs. The as-synthesized COFs possess excellent thermal stability, distinctive porous structure and moderate interfacial affinity with the polymer matrix, which effectively enhances the gas separation performance of the obtained membranes. At a PI-type COF loading of 2.0 wt%, the MMM treated at 450 °C for 1 h achieves superior separation performance. The permeabilities toward H 2 , CO 2 , O 2 and N 2 reach 2446, 2920, 495 and 131 Barrer, and the corresponding ideal selectivities of H 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /N 2 and O 2 /N 2 are 18.67, 22.29 and 3.77, respectively. Remarkably, the H 2 /N 2 separation behavior exceeds the 2008 Robeson upper bound, and CO 2 /N 2 as well as O 2 /N 2 separation performances are close to this limit. Elevated treatment temperature and extended heating time remarkably improve gas permeability but sacrifice membrane selectivity. Moreover, the fabricated MMMs display satisfactory anti-aging stability after 180-day ambient storage. This study develops a valid modification strategy via flaky PI-type COF incorporation to elevate the gas separation performance of TR polymers, providing a promising route for constructing high-efficiency gas separation membranes.

Developing soft ionic conductors that combine high toughness and high ionic conductivity remains a formidable challenge, as these properties are typically mutually exclusive. Here, we report a synergistic strategy using in situ synthesized sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as multifunctional crosslinkers within a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) ionogel. COFs, at an ultralow content of 0.005 wt.%, could concurrently serve as dynamic physical and topological crosslinks within the polymer network. This unique design results in a remarkable simultaneous enhancement of mechanical properties and ionic conductivity (e.g., fracture stress from 4 to 10 MPa, elongation at break rised from 1006% to 2460%, and conductivity improved from 0.037 to 0.168 S m − 1 . Unlike conventional crosslinkers, which often impede ion transport, the intrinsic ionic nanochannels of the COFs enable efficient ion conduction. The resulting ionogel demonstrated exceptional performance as a durable and sensitive pressure sensor for both wearable and underwater applications, overcoming a key limitation in soft electronics.

In situ synthesis of S-scheme COF/Ce-MOF heterojunctions significantly enhances photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production under ambient conditions. The directional charge separation, precise band alignment, and synergistic dual active sites of the heterojunction enable efficient, stable, and selective H 2 O 2 generation. The CRM (Ce-MOF/COF) heterojunction delivers an H 2 O 2 yield that is 11.2-fold higher than pristine Ce-MOF and 3.1-fold higher than pure COF. Moreover, the CRM heterojunction maintains excellent productivity over a 6-h reaction period. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analyses revealed not only the elemental composition and chemical states at the heterojunction interface but also the interfacial electronic redistribution and band alignment responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance. Specifically, the combined experimental and theoretical results confirmed the presence of strong interfacial coupling, the formation of an internal electric field, and the establishment of an S-scheme charge transfer pathway, all of which contribute to efficient charge separation and the preservation of high redox potentials, thereby enabling superior H 2 O 2 generation activity. Overall, this work not only deepens the understanding of MOF-based photocatalysts but also provides valuable design principles for constructing next-generation heterojunction materials with superior efficiency in photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production for environmental remediation.

The construction of functionalized interlayers has been identified as a highly effective strategy for the regulation of interfacial polymerization (IP) and the enhancement of the performance of thin-film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. However, most hydrophilic interlayers reported to date, although capable of improving monomer wetting and loading, tend to suppress the formation of the characteristic ridge-valley morphology, thereby reducing the effective mass-transfer area and ultimately limiting further enhancements in water permeability. Herein, a heterogeneous covalent organic framework (COF)/metal-organic framework (MOF) interlayer was constructed in situ on the surface of a polysulfone (PSF) support layer, in which an ultrathin COF layer was formed via sulfonic-acid-containing Pa-SO 3 H and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol to repair defects in the substrate. A ZIF-8 layer was subsequently grown in situ using the sulfonic acid groups on the COF as anchoring sites. Experimental results demonstrate that the COF/MOF interlayer structure significantly enhances the adsorption capacity of amine monomers and modulates their diffusion behavior, leading to a more pronounced leaf-like surface morphology, an optimized active-layer thickness, and an enhanced hydrophilicity of the polyamide (PA) layer. The i-TFC C/M-T membrane, based on the rigid trimesoyl chloride monomer, exhibits a water permeance of approximately 5.20 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , which is about 2.2 times higher than that of the control group, while maintaining a NaCl rejection of approximately 99.10%. The novel interlayer design was also proven to be suitable for the flexible cyclohexane-1,3,5-tricarbonyl trichloride system. This study demonstrates that the COF/MOF heterogeneous interlayer can shift the performance balance point of RO membrane flux without significantly compromising ion exclusion, thereby providing a general and effective strategy for designing high-performance aromatic PA RO membranes for brackish water desalination.

Anthrax is a serious zoonotic disease caused by Bacillus anthracis and dipicolinic acid (DPA) is the key component and major biomarker of Bacillus anthracis, therefore the development of rapid and sensitive DPA detection method is crucial to ensure public safety. In present study, carboxyl-functionalized covalent organic framework TpPa-COOH was synthesized using 2,5-diaminobenzoic acid and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol as the building blocks, then Eu 3+ was immobilized onto TpPa-COOH via coordination interaction to give the fluorescent composite TpPa-COOH@Eu 3+ of dual-emissions. The presence of DPA significantly enhanced the characteristic emission of TpPa-COOH@Eu 3+ at 616 nm attributed by the “antenna effect” between DPA and Eu 3+ , thus a ratiometric fluorescent sensor was developed for the sensitive DPA detection with a detection limit of 9.5 nmol L −1 . The ratiometric fluorescent sensor offered DPA detection with high accuracy and favorable selectivity. The practicability of fluorescence sensor was validated by detecting DPA contents in real water samples. This research not only proposes a sensitive fluorescence method for anthrax biomarker detection, aiding in the prevention of biological threats and disease spread, but also highlights the potential of COFs in developing efficient ratiometric fluorescent probes with self-calibration capabilities.

CA-125, as a tumor marker for ovarian cancer, plays an importance role for rapid and sensitive detection in early diagnosis. Herein, a label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on COF/PTh/MB nanocomposite was constructed for the detection of CA-125.The TAPB-DMTP-COF material, with its large surface area and stable porous framework, was used as the substrate. However, its poor conductivity hindered electron transfer. To address this, conductive polymer PTh was combined with the COF to enhance the composite's conductivity. Meanwhile, MB was used as a signal probe, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was adopted to measure the electrochemical signal. Under optimized experimental conditions, the proposed immunosensor exhibited excellent performance for the CA-125 detection, with a detection range of 1 mU/mL-10000 mU/mL, and a low detection limit of 0.34 mU/mL (S/N = 3), providing a potential platform for clinical application.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are ideal candidates for constructing high-performance molecular separation membranes. Interfacial polymerization (IP) represents an important approach for fabricating continuous COF membranes. This study presents an N-heterocyclic organobase-mediated IP (N-het-IP) strategy to rapidly fabricate highly crystalline, continuous COF membranes at the interface. The key of the N-het-IP strategy lies in the presynthesized aqueous-phase tertiary amine intermediates derived from the N-heterocyclic organobase (such as piperazine) and aldehyde monomers (such as Tp). The tertiary amine intermediates with a Tp core and N-heterocyclic segments take part in the dynamic amine exchange reaction with organic-phase amine monomers, inducing interfacial membrane formation and COF crystalline transformation within 30 min under mild conditions. Simultaneously, the interfacial assembly of the tertiary amine intermediates constructs an amphiphilic interfacial microenvironment, regulating self-arrangement and suppressing disordered stacking, thereby yielding highly crystalline, continuous, and defect-free COF membranes. Moreover, the N-het-IP strategy exhibits broad universality, being compatible with various N-heterocyclic organobases and amine monomers of diverse COF membranes. Constructed via the N-het-IP strategy, the resulting COF membrane exhibits moderately high permeance and enables precise molecular sieving of dyes. The N-het-IP strategy provides a facile and efficient method to synergize the rapid synthesis and continuous assembly of COF membranes, paving the way for the development of COF membranes tailored for on-demand molecular separations.
