Gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) is the most widely used buffer layer to prevent the reaction between YSZ electrolyte and La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) cathode for commercial solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). However, conductivity and sintering activity are vital to cell performance. In this paper, Ca 2+ and F − co-doped GDC (Ca 0.03 Gd 0.17 Ce 0.8 F 0.06 O 1.84-δ , CGDCF) is used as a buffer layer to improve the performance and stability of SOFC. The co-doped F − and Ca 2+ significantly improve the sintering properties and oxygen ion transport of traditional GDC material. Meanwhile, the optimized sintering temperature is 1300 °C, with the lowest ohmic resistance . The peak power density of a cell with a CGDCF buffer layer reaches 1.809 W cm −2 at 850 °C, which is 37 % higher than that of GDC. In addition, the cell with the CGDCF buffer layer exhibits excellent stability during the 150 h test owing to the lower migration of La and Sr elements. Thus, the Ca 2+ and F − co-doped GDC oxide emerges as a promising material for buffer layer applications.

To address solubility, plasticizer leakage, and ionic carrier issues in PVC-based solid ion-selective electrodes, a novel plasticizer-free photocurable solid Ca 2+ -selective electrode (GC/PANI/CPANI/Ca 2+ (PBA)-ISE) was developed using a novel electrode structure. A new Ca 2+ -sensitive membrane based on poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) was synthesized by ultraviolet polymerization, with conductive polyaniline (PANI) as the solid contact layer and a copolymer of aniline and 2,5-dimethoxyaniline (CPANI) as the coating. All potential electrochemical tests were carried out on the prepared Ca 2+ -selective electrode. The response slope of the electrode was 28.33 mV decade −1 , the detection limit was 6.9 × 10 −6 M, the stable linear range was 1 × 10 −6 to 1 × 10 −2 M, and it had a good Nernst response. The chronopotentiometric analysis and water layer tests showed that the potential drift of GC/PANI/CPANI/Ca 2+ (PBA)-ISE was as low as 0.0125 mV s −1 and 1.247 mV h −1 . In addition, the interference tests of environmental factors were carried out. When the electrode was in different interference light and gas environments, the potential changes of 1.6 × 10 −4 mV s −1 and 1.2 × 10 −3 mV s −1 were observed. Compared with previous reports and commercial electrodes, the prepared GC/PANI/CPANI/Ca 2+ (PBA)-ISE showed good electrochemical performance, and the recovery rate in Ca 2+ test solutions was higher (97.2–99.9%). This study provided theoretical insights to address solubility, plasticizer leakage, and ion carrier leakage issues in solid-state contact ion-selective electrodes. At the same time, this study provided a new structure and preparation method for the preparation of all-solid-state Ca 2+ -selective electrode. Graphical abstract

Gray mold , caused by Botrytis cinerea is an intractable fungal disease that causes extensive damage to agricultural products. In the search for novel antifungal active ingredients, we discovered a linear pyranocoumarin Pd-D-V was effective against B. cinerea in both in vitro and in vivo assays. Furthermore, this study investigated the effects of Ca 2+ and the Ca 2+ -calcineurin signaling pathway on its antifungal activity against B. cinerea . The results indicated that Pd-D-V reduced the concentration of Ca 2+ in the mycelia of B. cinerea ; CaCl 2 , the Ca 2+ channel blocker verapamil , or the calcineurin inhibitor cyclosporin A could affect the sensitivity of Pd-D-V against B. cinerea ; the expression of genes ( Bccch1, Bcmid1, BccnA, Bccnb1, Bcpmc1, and Bcpmr1 ) of the Ca 2+ -calcineurin signaling pathway decreased after Pd-D-V treatment. In summary, Pd-D-V is compound for developing fungicides against B. cinerea . Pd-D-V can reduce intracellular Ca 2+ concentration and disturb Ca 2+ homeostasis . The Ca 2+ -calcineurin signaling pathway is important in the antifungal activity of Pd-D-V against B. cinerea .

Due to the high crystallization, nobiletin was encapsulated by Ca 2+ -induced whey protein concentrate (WPC)-stabilized emulgels. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was used to regulate the interfacial properties of emulsions and viscoelasticity of emulgels. The formation of nobiletin crystals were monitored in emulgels and after digestion. Micro-rheometer was used to characterize the viscoelasticity of emulgels. Bioaccessibility of nobiletin was determined by an in vitro digestion model. Ca 2+ crosslinking increased the particle size of WPC-stabilized emulsion, while HPMC/WPC-stabilized emulsions kept smaller particle size. WPC-stabilized emulgels were more apt to syneresis, which could be prevented in the presence of HPMC. Nobiletin crystallization process in emulgels was delayed by HPMC. In the gelation process, HPMC addition increased the viscosity, but decreased the elasticity of emulgels. HPMC interrupted the crosslinking process of WPC and Ca 2+ . After destruction, emulgels had lower viscosity and elasticity, which became lower in the presence of HPMC. The fluctuation of mean square displacement profiles could indicate the formation of nobiletin crystals, which reduced the viscosity and elasticity of emulgels. HPMC increased the bioaccessibility of nobiletin. Higher Ca 2+ concentration was undesirable to enhance the nobiletin bioaccessibility, depending on the structure of emulgels.

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are the core components of high-performance coherent sources. Their properties can be modulated and improved by molecular design of constituent functional motifs. In this study, inspired by a classical π-conjugated borate group (B3O6)3−, we discovered a π-conjugated isocyamelurate [H2C6N7O3]− anion with colossal π-conjugated orbitals, thus giving ultra-strong anisotropic first-order polarizability and ultralarge second-order susceptibility. Two new alkaline-earth metal isocyamelurates, namely, Ca0.5H2C6N7O3·4H2O (I) and Sr0.5H2C6N7O3·4H2O (II), were successfully synthesized by a facile aqueous solution method. Both I and II show excellent nonlinear optical properties, including wide band gap (>4.05 eV), large birefringence (Δn ∼ 0.24), and a strong second order harmonic generation response (>5 × KDP). Moreover, I and II exhibit a broadband ultraviolet photoluminescence around 400 nm, which indicate that they are potential multifunctional optical materials with photon-emission and photon-conversion properties. The first-principles calculations reveal that the (H2C6N7O3)− anionic group plays a dominant role in optimizing and enhancing the optical performance of the crystals. This study confirms that there are plenty of opportunities for (iso)-cyamelurates in designing functional crystals with superior properties.

The utilization of biogas slurry is critical for the sustainable development of animal husbandry. Biomass carbon adsorption is a feasible method for the recycling of nutrients from biogas slurry. However, research on the co-adsorption of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate is scarce. Herein, soybean straw was utilized as the raw material to prepare Ca 2+ -modified biochar (CaSSB), which was investigated for its ammonia nitrogen and phosphate adsorption mechanisms. Compared with natural biochar (SSB), CaSSB possesses a high H/C ratio, larger surface area, high porosity and various functional groups. Ca 2+ -modified soybean straw biochar exhibited excellent adsorption performance for NH 4 + –N (103.18 mg/g) and PO 4 3− −P (9.75 mg/g) at pH = 6, using an adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L. The experimental adsorption data of ammonia nitrogen by CaSSB corresponded to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting that the adsorption process was homogeneous and that electrostatic attraction might be the primary adsorption mechanism. Meanwhile, the adsorption of phosphate conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir–Freundlich model, whose mechanism might be attributed to ligand exchange and chemical precipitation. These results reveal the potential of CaSSBs as a cost-effective, efficient adsorbent for the recovery of ammonium and phosphate from biogas slurry.

Calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) play crucial roles as second messengers in living cells and are associated with the onset and development of chronic brain diseases, including epilepsy. Dynamic and real-time imaging of extracellular calcium levels ([Ca 2+ ] ex ) in the brain holds great potential for identifying disease foci. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful non-invasive tool for Ca 2+ imaging with unlimited depth penetration. However, current available Ca 2+ MR sensors lack the sensitivity to monitor small [Ca 2+ ] ex alterations associated with chronic brain diseases in vivo. In this study, a highly sensitive Ca 2+ -dependent T2-T1 switchable magnetic nanosensor is reported, consisting of Ca 2+ -specific ligands engineered near-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Surface ligand modifications can be adjusted to regulate the interaction energy between sensors and Ca 2+ , allowing for customizable response range and sensitivity to fulfill the in vivo imaging requirements. The optimized sensors enable non-invasive visualization of early-stage seizure focus in mice undergoing epilepsy.

Brine deposited in Chaerhan salt lake belongs to the chloride type and can be simplified into the hexnary system Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl––H2O. The known solubility data indicate that significant salting-in effects exist in its subsystems of KCl–LiCl–H2O and KCl–CaCl2–H2O, which inevitably affect the properties and solubility behavior of actual brine. In this work, the solubility behavior study and phase diagram determination are extended to the quaternary system of Li+, K+, and Ca2+∥Cl––H2O. The phase equilibrium data at 298.15 and 273.15 K are reported, and five solid species, including two double salts KCl·CaCl2 and LiCl·CaCl2·5H2O, are found. The salting-in effect is still exhibited in the Li+, K+, and Ca2+∥Cl––H2O system and results in a very high total salt content at invariant points; e.g., they are 59.08 and 46.93% at 298.15 and 273.15 K, respectively.

Saikosaponins (SSs) are a class of naturally occurring oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins found in Radix bupleuri that has been widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. As the main active principals of Radix bupleuri , SSs have been shown to suppress mouse motor activity, impair learning and memory, and decrease hippocampal neurogenesis. In the present study, we investigated the effect of five SSs (SSa, SSb1, SSb2, SSc, and SSd) on neuronal viability and the underlying mechanisms in cultured murine neocortical neurons. We demonstrate that SSa, SSb1 and SSd produce concentration-dependent apoptotic neuronal death and induce robust increase in intracellular Ca 2+ concentration ([Ca 2+ ] i ) at low micromolar concentrations with a rank order of SSd > SSa > SSb1, whereas SSb2 and SSc have no detectable effect on both neuronal survival and [Ca 2+ ] i . Mechanistically, SSd-induced elevation in [Ca 2+ ] i is the primary result of enhanced extracellular Ca 2+ influx, which likely triggers Ca 2+ -induced Ca 2+ release through ryanodine receptor activation, but not SERCA inhibition. SSd-induced Ca 2+ entry occurs through a non-selective mechanism since blockers of major neuronal Ca 2+ entry pathways, including L-type Ca 2+ channel, NMDA receptor, AMPA receptor, Na + -Ca 2+ exchanger, and TRPV1, all failed to attenuate the Ca 2+ response to SSd. Further studies demonstrate that SSd increases calcein efflux and induces an inward current in neocortical neurons. Together, these data demonstrate that SSd elevates [Ca 2+ ] i due to its ability to increase membrane permeability, likely by forming pores in the surface of membrane, which leads to massive Ca 2+ influx and apoptotic neuronal death in neocortical neurons.

The development of highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is critical because the sluggish reaction kinetics of this reaction usually hinders the efficiency of water electrolysis for the generation of H2. Herein, we report that ultrathin cobalt-based coordination polymers (Co-CPs) plates are exceptional electrocatalysts for the OER as they show one of the most lowest Tafel slopes among the cobalt-based OER catalysts reported to date. It has been found that the Co-CPs can be transformed into Co(OH)2 hexagonal nanoplates and then further oxidized into CoOOH, which acts as a catalytic active site for the oxidation of water. Interestingly, when Ca2+, an inactive ion, was introduced into the precursors, thinner CoOOH nanosheets with more exposed active sites were formed, which displayed significantly higher OER activity than the Co-CPs. Furthermore, the content of Ca2+ in the Co-based coordination polymers (CoxCay-CPs) and the corresponding OER activity of these CPs were systematically investigated, and Co0.89Ca0.11-CPs exhibited highest OER activity. This study provides a fundamental understanding of the catalytic mechanism of cobalt-based coordination polymer electrocatalysts and the effect of inactive species, such as Ca2+, on the OER in an alkaline electrolyte, which may promote the design of highly active electrocatalysts.

The Li 2 (Mg 0.9 A 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 (A = Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , Ca 2+ ) ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. A series of Li 2 (Mg 0.9 A 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 ceramics were investigated in regard to the sintering temperatures, crystal structures and dielectric properties. The Li 2 (Mg 0.9 A 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 ceramic exhibited a single phase of Li 2 Mg 4 TiO 7 , and the Rietveld refinement was used to analyze the crystal structure. The Li 2 (Mg 0.9 Ca 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 ceramics could be sintered below 1350 °C with high densities, high dielectric constants and near zero τ f values. The maximum Q · f value of Li 2 (Mg 0.9 Zn 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 was higher than that of Li 2 (Mg 0.9 A 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 (A = Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ ). The optimum microwave dielectric properties of ε r = 14.77, a high Q · f value of 162,200 GHz and τ f = − 4.30 ppm/°C were achieved in Li 2 (Mg 0.9 Zn 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 ceramic sintered at 1500 °C. In addition, Li 2 (Mg 0.9 Ca 0.1 ) 4 TiO 7 ceramic sintered at 1300 °C exhibited the suitable dielectric properties with a high ε r value of 15.79, Q · f = 100,300 GHz and a near zero τ f value of − 1.43 ppm/°C.

In this study, direct deposition, 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) crosslinking, chelating and ultraviolet (UV) photo-grafting methods were employed to bond alginate-Ca2+/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) interpenetrating network hydrogel onto cotton fabric surface for wound dressing applications. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of alginate-Ca2+/PNIPAAm hydrogels on the cotton fabrics. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate surface and cross-section morphologies. Differential scanning calorimetry and three-dimensional video microscopy indicated that fabric-supported hydrogels maintained the thermal-sensitive property with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of around 34–35℃. The results of water vapor permeation revealed that the water vapor transmission rate at 37℃ was significantly higher than that at 25℃ for the shrink and collapse of the hydrogels above the LCST. Moreover, the breaking stress of the fabric-supported hydrogels was similar to that of the original cotton fabrics, but much larger than the hydrogels by themselves. The UV photo-grafting provided the strongest peel strength, followed by the BTCA crosslinking, the chelating and the direct deposition method. The cotton fabric-supported alginate-Ca2+/PNIPAAm hydrogels were stiffer than the original cotton fabric due to the high glass transition temperature of PNIPAAm (about 140℃). The in vitro drug release experiment confirmed that the cumulative release amount was much higher at around 37℃ (above the LCST) than at 25℃ (below the LCST). This showed that the fabric-supported thermal-sensitive hydrogels had functions of keeping the wound area breathable and comfortable, and provided controlled drug release with good mechanical properties, indicating a great potential and significance for wound dressing applications.
