Enzyme Shielding in a Large Mesoporous Hollow Silica Shell for Improved Recycling and Stability Based on CaCO3 Microtemplates and Biomimetic Silicification

Jiandong Cui,Zhilei Tan,Peipei Han,Cheng Zhong,Shiru Jia

We report a novel “anchor–shield” approach for synthesizing a yolk–shell-structured biocatalytic system that consists of a phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) protein particle core and a hollow silica shell with large mesopores by a combination of CaCO3 microtemplates and biomimetic silicification. The method is established upon filling porous CaCO3 cores with PAL via co-precipitation, controlled self-assembly and polycondensation of silanes, cross-link of the PAL molecules, and subsequent CaCO3 dissolution. During this process, the self-assembled layer of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide served as a structure-directing agent of the mesostructure and directed the overgrowth of the mesostructured silica on the external surface of PAL/CaCO3 hybrid microspheres; after CaCO3 dissolution, the cross-linked PAL particles were encapsulated in the hollow silica shell. The hollow silica shell around the enzyme particles provided a “shield” to protect from biological, thermal, and chemical degradation for the enzyme. As a result, the recycling of the PAL enzyme was improved remarkably in comparison to adsorbed PAL on CaCO3. PAL particles with a hollow silica shell still retained 60% of their original activity after 13 cycles, whereas adsorbed PAL on CaCO3 microparticles lost activity after 7 cycles. Moreover, immobilized PAL exhibited higher stability against a proteolytic agent, denaturants, heat, and extreme pH than adsorbed PAL on CaCO3 microparticles. These results demonstrated that the “anchor–shield” approach is an efficient method to obtain a stable and recycled biocatalyst with a yolk–shell structure.

Superhydrophobic CNTs/CaCO3-coated MgO-CaO powder for enhancing hydration resistance and high-temperature performance of ultralow-carbon MgO-CaO-C refractories

Yabo Gao,Hang Li,Huicong Lei,Xin Wang,Ling Zhang,Haijun Zhang,Zhong Huang,Shaowei Zhang

Low-carbon MgO-CaO-C refractories are promising for clean steel refining, but their application is limited by CaO hydration and the deterioration of high-temperature performance caused by reduced carbon content. In this work, a CNTs/CaCO 3 co-coated MgO-CaO powder (CC-MCP) was successfully fabricated via a densified micro-zone deposition process employing MgO-CaO particles, polyethylene powder, and starch as materials. The as-prepared CC-MCP were incorporated into low-carbon MgO-CaO-C refractories to achieve a “two birds with one stone” effect, simultaneously enhancing both hydration resistance and high-temperature service performance. Compared to the control sample prepared with flake graphite as carbon source, the counterpart containing CC-MCP exhibited superior hydration resistance and high-temperature performances, including a 286% improvement in water vapor resistance, an increase of up to 209% in oxidation resistance, a 36% improvement in thermal shock resistance, and a reduction in slag penetration depth from 654 μm to 435 μm. This “two birds with one stone” strategy provides an effective and scalable route for developing high-performance ultralow -carbon MgO-CaO-C refractories for clean steel production, while simultaneously offering a practical solution to the hydration challenges faced by CaO-containing refractories under harsh storage and service conditions.

Performance and mechanism of antibacterial activity and organic dyes degradation of WO3/TiO2/(Ca,Y)F2:Tm,Yb loaded on Bio-CaCO3

Xiaoyan Zhao,Yongcheng Zhou,Hua Guo,Yuqi Zhai,Xianrui Zou,Donghui Wang

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has received widespread attention as high stability, low toxicity and costless photocatalyst , but it only exhibits photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet (UV) light. To improve TiO 2 photocatalytic efficiency, Bio-CaCO 3 /WO 3 /TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb was prepared. TiO 2 was combined with upconversion materials, coupled with WO 3 and loaded on oyster shell powder (Bio-CaCO 3 ), which showed that the prepared photocatalyst effectively reduce the band gap of TiO 2 , expand the photoreaction range of the material and avoid agglomeration, thus improving its photocatalytic efficiency and antibacterial efficiency. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Bio-CaCO 3 /WO 3 /TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb (50 mg) was 24.32% higher than that of TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb in 90 min. And its antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) were enhanced by 38.68% and 25.89% compared to TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb, respectively.

Thermochemical heat storage and optical properties of red mud/Mn co-doped high alumina cement-stabilized carbide slag in CaO/CaCO3 cycles

Ying Yang,Yingjie Li,Chunxiao Zhang,Zirui He,Jianli Zhao

CaO/CaCO 3 thermochemical heat storage has been considered as a competitive technology in concentrated solar power plants. Carbide slag and red mud are solid wastes from the chlor-alkali industry and aluminum industry, respectively. In this work, the red mud/Mn co-doped high alumina cement-stabilized carbide slag was synthesized for CaO/CaCO 3 heat storage. The effects of the addition of high alumina cement and red mud/Mn on the heat storage capacity, cyclic stability, and optical absorption of the modified carbide slag were investigated. The modified carbide slag exhibits excellent heat storage capacity and optical absorption. The Ca 3 Al 2 O 6 and CaMnO 3 inhibit the growth of CaO grains. FeMnO 3 and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 possess high optical absorption properties . The additions of Mn and red mud enhance the heat storage rate and basicity of the carbide slag. The effective conversion of the modified carbide slag is 0.62 after 30 cycles, which is 3.1 times as high as that of the untreated carbide slag. The modified carbide slag reaches the optical absorptance of ~58%, which is 6.5 times as high as that of the untreated one. Thus, the red mud/Mn co-doped high alumina cement-stabilized carbide slag is a potential candidate for the CaO/CaCO 3 heat storage system .

New insight into the changes in metal-phosphonate complexes from the addition of CaCO3 to enhance ferric flocculation for efficient phosphonate removal

Chaocheng Zeng,Huimin Hu,Chao Wang,Qing Shi,Qiwu Zhang,Mengfei Chen,Qian Wang,Tingting Zhang

Due to the stable chelating effect of organic phosphonates in wastewater, phosphonates with increasing emission are difficult to be removed effectively by traditional ferric salt flocculation , which has posed tough challenges for reducing total phosphorus pollution in recent years. In this work, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) was introduced to work together with the widely investigated flocculant of ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) to realize an efficient removal of nitrilotrismethylenephosphonic acid (NTMP) at much lower dosage of FeCl 3 . With an aid of synergy effect from together use of CaCO 3 and FeCl 3 , the remaining concentration as low as 0.16 mg−P/L, far below the sewage discharge limit (0.5 mg−P/L), was simply obtained with a significantly reduced Fe/P molar ratio at only 4, resulting from calcium source donor to form more stable Fe–Ca–P tridentate bridging complexes, high affinity towards ferric ions on CaCO 3 surface and slow-release alkaline from CaCO 3 . A comparison among sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ) and CaCO 3 as additives, was carried out to highlight the advantages of using CaCO 3 and clarify the mechanism for the greatly improved performance by a set of characterizations including XRD, FTIR, Zeta potential , XPS , SEM−EDS and TG analyses. The addition of CaCO 3 in ferric flocculation resulted in further obvious advantages such as 75% shortened settling time and only one−third of sludge volume of the precipitant, beneficial to the sample handling in engineering application. The proposed new approach has been further confirmed to work efficiently on real phosphonate-containing wastewater. Discussion on the interaction between CaCO 3 and ferric salts in phosphonate solutions shed new insights into the working mechanism of using CaCO 3 for the treatment of phosphonates-containing wastewater.

Double cross-linked emulsion gels stabilized by flaxseed protein and chitosan: Effects of CaCO3 content on gel properties, stability and curcumin digestive characteristics

Yu-Sheng Wang,Ming-Yu Ding,Yan Chen,Xiao-Tong Hu,Yi-Xiu Zhang,Zi-Wei Fang,Hai-Hua Chen

In Ca 2+ -induced emulsion gels, rapid Ca 2+ release leads to uneven gel structures, impairing curcumin (Cur) protection and delivery. To overcome this issue, a novel approach combining low-temperature heating (40 °C) and mild acidic environments (pH 6.5) was proposed to gradually releas Ca 2+ from CaCO 3 . This strategy significantly improves the mechanical properties and stability of flaxseed protein (FP)-chitosan (CS) emulsion gels by forming a uniform and dense network structure. At a CaCO 3 concentration of 15 mg/mL, the gel exhibited optimal performance, increasing Cur's photostability and storage stability by 81.3 %, 61.6 %, and 54.8 %, respectively, compared to the control (Cur-oil). Increasing the CaCO 3 concentration also inhibited the release of Cur and free fatty acids, reducing bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion. Overall, this study provides new insights into the stability of bioactive compounds and expands the application of CaCO 3 -induced emulsion gels as delivery systems in the food industry.

Polydopamine-Doped Porous Nano-CaCO3-Supported Green Tablets for the Humidity-Responsive Intelligent Release of Active Ingredients and Control of Grain Storage Pests

Wen-kui Li,Xiang-yun Fu,Yu-zhen Wu,Yong-hong Wang,Jing Zhang,Zhi-qing Ma

Green tablets for grain storage are urgently required, and intelligently controlled release of active ingredients based on functional nanomaterials is a promising strategy for the preparation of green and high-efficiency tablets. In this work, a polydopamine-doped nano-CaCO3 (nanoPCaCO3) with a diameter of 60–88 nm was prepared by a gas diffusion pore-opening strategy. The porous nanoPCaCO3 exhibited superior encapsulation capacity toward phenolic and ketone compounds based on pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interactions. After functional disintegrants and excipient addition, two kinds of nanoPCaCO3 tablets containing carvacrol (18.0%) and carvone (16.7%) were prepared, which had a novel humidity-controlled release mode based on the humidity-responsive reaction between nanoPCaCO3 and hygroscopic solid acids. At low relative humidity (RH), grain storage pests were hard to survive, and the release rates of active ingredients in the tablets were slow; at high RH, grain storage pests grew well, and the release rates of active ingredients were accelerated correspondingly. As a result, the 7 day cumulative release ratios of carvacrol and carvone from the tablets at 75% RH were approximately 3 times that at 40% RH. Besides, the tablets exhibited desirable fumigation activity; at 75% RH, the 19 day inhibition ratio against Aspergillus flavus attained 73.7%, and the 7 day fumigation mortality against Sitophilus zeamais reached 92.7%. The tablets can be efficiently used for grain storage pest control, and the porous nanoPCaCO3-supported humidity-controlled release mode can be extended for more high efficiency and functional medicament development.

Synthesis of a novel comb-like copolymer used as dispersant in organic solvent and influence of free comb-like copolymer on CaCO3 suspension

Xiwei Jing,Weiguang Gong,Zhongjun Feng,Xin Meng,Baicun Zheng

A novel comb-like copolymer poly (1e)-graft-poly (ε-caprolactone) (SMA-g-PCL, SP), which can be used as an effective CaCO3 dispersant in organic solvent, was prepared via the esterification reaction between SMA and PCL. The structures and compositions of the graft copolymer were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), respectively. The influences of free comb-like copolymer on CaCO3 suspension viscosity and rheological behavior were investigated. It was found that the particle-binding bridge generated among CaCO3 particles through hydrogen bonding and/or electrostatic interactions increased the suspension viscosity as well as the depletion flocculation. On the other hand, it was noteworthy that the free comb-like copolymer could make the CaCO3 suspension evolve from shear-thinning fluid or nearly Newtonian fluid into shear-thickening fluid. It was attributed to the formation of a transient network through intermolecular associations between the adsorbed SP and the free polymer chains under the action of shear. Finally, the fitting parameters from the Herschel–Bulkley model were in good agreement with the evolution of the rheological behavior of CaCO3 suspension.

Preparation of cellulose nanofiber/Fe3O4/CaCO3 magnetic biocomposite by air capture and its application on purifying lead-contaminated water: Removal, immobilization and separation

He-Xiang Zhao,Ming-Xin Li,Yan Wang,Yuan-Zhuo Tan,Zi-Xiong Zhou,Yuan-Ru Guo,Qing-Jiang Pan

Utilizing nature resource is one of the most effective ways to achieve sustainability development. In this work, super low-concentration CO 2 in the atmosphere and rich and cheap biomaterial cellulose were used to prepare magnetic bio-composite, cellulose nanofiber/Fe 3 O 4 /CaCO 3 (CFeCa). By capturing CO 2 in air, Ca 2+ was transformed into calcite CaCO 3 , which subsequently coated on cellulose nanofiber (CNF). Fe 3 O 4 with about 50 nm in size were also observed to attach to the CNF. Thus, CNF bridged these two inorganic materials, which together fabricated stable composite with strong mutual coupling. The prepared CFeCa was applied to purify the lead-polluted water as water treatment agent. Its up-taken capacity for Pb 2+ reached as high as 1010 mg·g −1 . Almost 100% removal efficiency was attained, even treating Pb 2+ wastewater in a wide concentration range from 5 to 250 ppm. Meanwhile, CFeCa is stable property during application. After running for 30 cycles, the treated water still met drinkable water standard. More importantly, the recovered lead was also bound on the surface of CNF, which make it easy to be separated from water and avoiding the risk of second pollution. Cheap raw materials and multiple merits of resulted composite offer CFeCa a perspective application as water treatment agent.

Hierarchical multi-porous carbonaceous beads prepared with nano-CaCO3 in-situ encapsulated hydrogels for efficient batch and column removal of antibiotics from water

Yong-Zhu Yan,Wei Zheng,De-Zhi Huang,Zuo-Yi Xiao,Sung Soo Park,Chang-Sik Ha,Shang-Ru Zhai

Novel hierarchical multi-porous carbonaceous beads were prepared by a simple process derived from nano-CaCO 3 in-situ encapsulated hydrogels for the efficient batch and column removal of antibiotics from water. The obtained material (CC x -CB) was characterized by several techniques and methodologies such as, SEM, TEM, XRD , Raman, BET, MIP and FTIR. To evaluate the feasibility of CC x -CB carbonaceous beads as a potential adsorbent for antibiotic removal, batch adsorption experiments and fixed bed column experiments were conducted using tetracycline as the model antibiotic. The results showed that CC x -CB carbonaceous beads were effective in removing tetracycline with no significant change at pH (3.0–7.0). The adsorption of TC onto CC x -CB carbonaceous beads better fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm model was 279.3 mg/g at pH 7.0. In the fixed bed column experiments, lower influent TC concentration and lower flow rate lead to favorable adsorption of TC on CC x -CB carbonaceous beads. The Adams-Bohart and Thomas models were applied to the experimental data to predict the breakthrough curves using non-linear regression. More significantly, the carbonaceous beads also exhibit excellent regeneration ability over the adsorption-desorption process. The obtained results suggested that the CC x -CB exhibit a promising candidate for tetracycline removal because of their highly effective TC adsorption capacity, low cost and good regenerability.

A Fossilization-Inspired Photoelectrochemical Sensing Platform: DNA-Induced In Situ CaCO3 Crystal Growth Modulates The Photoelectrochemical Response of Gold Electrodes for Ultrasensitive Aflatoxin B1 Detection

Lv Xianfeng,Chen Minyan,Lin Bangfeng,Jiang Yaru,Zhou Jicheng,Zheng Xinyi,Wu Wenxin,Li Ning,Zhuang Junyang

Although photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing offers low background and high sensitivity, most PEC platforms rely on semiconductor materials and immobilized recognition probes, which complicate electrode fabrication and reduce operational simplicity. Herein, we report a fossilization-inspired photoelectrochemical sensing platform (FIPSP) for ultrasensitive detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) based on DNA-induced in situ CaCO 3 crystal growth on a gold electrode (AuE). We found that nucleic acids could induce interfacial biomineralization of calcite-like CaCO 3 crystals on AuE, and the resulting mineralized layer effectively modulated the intrinsic anodic PEC response of AuE. In this design, a bead-immobilized initiator DNA was first hybridized with an AFB1 aptamer. Upon target recognition, the aptamer dissociated from the bead-immobilized initiator DNA, allowing the initiator to trigger a hybridization chain reaction (HCR) between two hairpin DNA probes. After alkaline treatment, the HCR products were disassembled into DNA strands, which were then released and adsorbed onto AuE to induce in situ CaCO 3 crystal growth. The mineralized layer hindered interfacial charge transfer and ascorbic acid diffusion, thereby suppressing the photocurrent and enabling detection of AFB1. Under optimized conditions, the developed FIPSP exhibited a linear range from 1 ag mL –1 to 10 pg mL –1 and a detection limit of 0.61 ag mL –1 , together with excellent selectivity and reproducibility. It also showed satisfactory performance in soybean oil and maize samples. This work establishes a simplified PEC electrode construction strategy that requires neither semiconductor photoactive material synthesis nor probe immobilization on the electrode surface, providing a promising platform for ultrasensitive AFB1 analysis.

A Multifunctional Bio-Based Bamboo Coating Integrating Nano-ZnO, Artemisia argyi, KMnO4, and Nano-CaCO3 for Long-Term Preservation of Climacteric and Non-Climacteric Fruits

Juan Du,Kang-Li Yang,Zhi-Qing Yuan,Rui He,Shu-Juan Liu,Can-Cheng Li,Shou-tong Meng,Xu-yu Long,Qian Su,Qing Liao,Pei-ning Zhu

Postharvest fruit losses are largely driven by a short shelf-life resulting from ethylene-induced ripening, microbial spoilage, and moisture loss. In this study, a multifunctional coating was fabricated on Moso bamboo substrates via a simple two-step process. The coating integrates superhydrophobic, ethylene-scavenging, and antibacterial functions, utilizing rosin, nano-ZnO, Artemisia argyi powder, nano-CaCO3, and KMnO4. The bamboo with this coating acts as an indirect preservation platform, regulating the storage microenvironment to reduce ethylene accumulation, microbial proliferation, and water loss. The system is cost-effective, biosafe, and scalable for practical use. Shelf-life tests demonstrated significant extension for both climacteric and nonclimacteric fruits: bananas (from 5 to 21 days, ≥200%), strawberries (1–2 to 5 days, ≥150%), blueberries (5–7 to 15 days, ≥114%), cherry tomatoes (4–7 to 14 days, ≥100%), and sweet cherries (5–7 to 14 days, ≥100%). The synergistic effect of ethylene adsorption, moisture barrier, and contact-plus vapor-phase antibacterial action contributes to the broad-spectrum efficacy of this approach. These findings support this coating as a promising passive packaging material for fresh produce preservation.
