This study aimed to research the preparation and content determination of capsaicin-chitosan microspheres (CCMS) enteric coated tablets. The core tablets were prepared with the method of wet granulation. Nine formulae were designed to determine the optimal formula of the core tablet. Eudragit L100 was used to prepare the CCMS enteric-coated tablets. The effect of enteric coated formulation variables such as content of talc (10%, 25% and 40%), plasticisers (TEC and DBS), dosage of plasticiser (10%, 20% and 30%) and coating weight (2%, 3% and 5%) were evaluated for drug release characteristics. Thein vitrorelease was studied using 0.1 N HCl and pH 6.8 phosphate buffer. Enteric coated tablets without ruptures or swelling behaviour over 2 h in 0.1 N HCl indicated that these tablets showed acid resistance. The accumulated release rate in phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) revealed that the prepared tablets were able to sustain drug release into the intestine and a first-order release was obtained for capsaicin. This research is the first report of the preparation and content determination of CCMS enteric coated tablets. The sustained release behavior of enteric coated formulations in pH 6.8 phosphate buffer demonstrated that it would be a potential drug delivery platform for sustained delivery of gastric irritant drugs.

A novel water-soluble chitosan derivative, glucosyloxyethyl acrylated chitosan was successfully synthesized by Michael addition reaction of chitosan with glucosyloxyethyl acrylate (GEA), and the obtained glyco-chitosan derivative was characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, elemental analysis, XRD, TG, DSC and SEM. The FT-IR and 1 H NMR results showed that GEA residues were grafted onto the amino group of chitosan. The degree of substitution (DS) was calculated by elemental analysis. XRD data revealed that the introduced saccharide moieties decreased the crystalline structure of chitosan. TG and DSC results demonstrated that the glucosyloxyethyl acrylated chitosan was less thermal stable than chitosan. This efficient synthetic method provided an approach of preparing water-soluble glyco-chitosan derivatives. The obtained derivatives would show stronger specific affinity of lectin than chitosan thus would have potential applications in biomaterials.

The mycotoxin-producing fungi contamination of foodstuffs and agricultural commodities is a serious problem. In this study, the efficacy of acetic acid (AcA), chitosan (CS), and CS with extra AcA (CS/extra AcA) against Aspergillus flavus ( A. flavus ) in vitro and in vivo were investigated. Results showed that CS/extra AcA strongly inhibited the mycelial growth and aflatoxins production of A. flavus at lower concentrations than CS (MIC > 16.0 mg/mL) or AcA (MIC: 0.31 %). Significant inhibition was achieved in the presence of 4.0/0.12 and 8.0/0.08 CS (mg/mL)/extra AcA (%). CS/extra AcA exhibited remarkable antifungal activities based on the results of spore germination inhibition, abnormalities of spore morphology, disruption of cell membrane, mitochondrial dysfunction, and induction of apoptosis of hyphae. Moreover, pathogenicity test in peanut kernels showed that 8.0/0.16 CS (mg/mL)/extra AcA (%) could effectively inhibit the fungal infection and aflatoxin B 1 production. The efficacy of CS/extra AcA is possibly due to the synergy of the antifungal property of CS, and undissociated AcA. The findings referred that CS/extra AcA is safe, efficient, and economical, and it could be used as a promising way to control A. flavus contamination in agro-foods preservation.

Fluorescent nanostructures (NSs) derived from polysaccharides have drawn great attention as novel fluorescent probes for potential bio-imaging applications. Herein, we reported a facile alkali-assisted hydrothermal method to fabricate polysaccharide NSs using starch and chitosan as raw materials. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that the average particle sizes are 14 nm and 75 nm for starch and chitosan NSs, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis showed that there are a large number of hydroxyl or amino groups on the surface of these polysaccharide-based NSs. Strong fluorescence with an excitation-dependent emission behaviour was observed under ultraviolet excitation. Interestingly, the photostability of the NSs was found to be superior to fluorescein and rhodamine B. The quantum yield of starch NSs could reach 11.12% under the excitation of 360 nm. The oxidative metal ions including Cu(II), Hg(II)and Fe(III) exhibited a quench effect on the fluorescence intensity of the prepared NSs. Both of the two kinds of the multicoloured NSs showed a maximum fluorescence intensity at pH 7, while the fluorescence intensity decreased dramatically when they were put in an either acidic or basic environment (at pH 3 or 11). The cytotoxicity study of starch NSs showed that low cell cytotoxicity and 80% viability was found after 24 h incubation, when their concentration was less than 10 mg/mL. The study also showed the possibility of using the multicoloured starch NSs for mouse melanoma cells and guppy fish imaging. Keywords:polysaccharide nanostructures;fluorescent materials;quantum yield;cell imaging;fish imaging

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has aroused a wide range of research interests ranging from micro-nano energy devices to the Internet of Things (IoT). Nevertheless, the non-degradability of most-used synthetic polymer carbon sources poses a serious threat to the environment. In this work, ecofriendly chitosan-based derivatives, including carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), chitosan oligosaccharide, and chitosan hydrochloride, are successfully converted into LIGs for the first time via a convenient one-step CO2 laser engraving at ambient air. The obtained LIGs are characterized by a three-dimensional hierarchical porous structure and exhibit good sheet conductivity. The consecutive carbonization and graphitization mechanism of target precursors induced by laser heat accumulation is also deeply discussed. Besides, based on a mechanically reliable LIG/CMCS composite film and tribo-negative acrylic/polyimide anti-layers, two contact-separation mode triboelectric nanogenerators are built and their power densities range from 1.44 to 2.48 mW cm–2. These devices with long cycle life can be used for low-frequency mechanical energy harvesting and commercial capacitance charging, which could be potentially applied in the wireless sensor network nodes. Such a family of chitosan derivatives paves a new route for LIG synthesis and provides new ideas for ecofriendly LIG electronics.

When hydrophobically modified chitosan (HM-CHI) comes into contact with red blood cells (RBCs), it can cause agglomeration. This property leads HM-CHI to be a potential agent to form a rapid haemostatic plug to stop bleeding at wound sites. In this study, we investigated the properties of the HM-CHI biopolymer to act as an agent that rapidly clots blood. We have examined the synthesis and structural characteristics of HM-CHI – blood substances using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. To understand the rheological behaviour of RBCs within HM-CHI, we have studied the effects of HM-CHI on RBC aggregation and morphology using a rheometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. When mixed with sodium citrate, HM-CHI rapidly transformed human blood into an elastic gel. In contrast, un-modified chitosan (i.e. without hydrophobes) was unable to clot blood. The hydrophobias within HM-CHI entered into the RBC membranes and connected to the cells by a sample-spanning network, which subsequently led to the formation of an elastic gel. The gelling ability of HM-CHI is similar to that of fibrin-based sealants, but at a much lower cost and greater availability.

Harvest of algal biomass from dilute culture medium at low cost remains a major hurdle to industrial scale processing. Conventional harvesting methods are not only costly, but also affect any later downstream processes partly because of the metal ions contamination by flocculants . This work constructed an electro-flotation technique including two steps of flocculation by chitosan first and then sequential bubbling flotation by non-sacrificial graphite electrodes . Laboratory work has been carried out to investigate the influences of chitosan dosage, pH value, cell density of algal culture, stirring rate and mixing time on flocculation efficiency, and the voltage and current intensity imposed on electrodes and the space between electrodes on flotation efficiency. Moreover, a 1000 L pilot bench of electro-flotator constructed to harvest Chlorella sp. was tested. Around 90% of total recovery efficiency and 50 times concentration rate have been reached, and only 23.7 g chitosan and 0.43 kWh of electricity are required to harvest 1 kg biomass. Above results proved electro-flotation by graphite electrodes assisted with chitosan is a safe and cost effective approach for microalgae harvesting.

Using chitosan as raw material, a composite-featured chitosan/Ag 2 S/carbon quantum dot (CS/Ag 2 S/CQDs hydrogels) was synthesized by successfully uploading carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and silver sulfide (Ag 2 S). According to the SEM and TEM characterization of the material, the hydrogel material has a rich pore-like structure, which can absorb wound tissue fluid and promote wound healing. Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus were used as model bacteria to test the antibacterial effect of CS/Ag 2 S/CQDs. This material not only has excellent inhibitory effect on common bacteria (the inhibitory rate of E. coli and S. aureus is 86% and 67%, respectively), but also has good inhibitory effect on drug-resistant bacteria (the inhibitory rate of MRSA is 73%). The bacterial toxicity test showed that CS/Ag 2 S/CQDs hydrogel had low toxicity. Meanwhile, CS/Ag 2 S/CQDs hydrogels degraded 28.39% of the hydrogels during a 7 days biodegradation. Its excellent bacteriostatic and degradable properties make it a potential candidate for a new type of medical dressing for clinical application.

Chitin and chitosan are important support structures for many organisms and are important renewable macromolecular biomass resources. Structurally, with the removal of acetyl group, the solubility of chitosan is improved. However, the specific mechanism of solubility enhancement from chitin to chitosan is still unclear. In this study, the atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based single molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) was used to obtain the single-chain mechanical behavior of chitin and chitosan. The results show that the hydrogen (H)-bonds' state, which can be influenced by the solvent, determines the degree of binding water (solubility) of polysaccharides, and that the binding water energy of a single chitosan chain is 6 times higher than that of chitin in water. Thus, H-bonding is the key to solubility enhancement and can be used to modulate the solubility properties of chitosan. It is expected that our studies can help to understand the structural and functional properties of chitin and chitosan at the single molecule level.

Glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinked chitosan (CHIT) was modified on nylon fibers. Afterwards, pyrrole was in-situ polymerized on the surface of the CHIT/Nylon fiber. The SEM and FT-IR results show that the functional fiber is successfully prepared, and the obtained polypyrrole (PPy) presents nanorods morphology on the fiber surface. The mechanical properties of the fibers were studied by Instron. The organic electrochemical transistors based on PPy/Nylon fiber, PPy/CHIT/Nylon fiber, and PPy/GA-CHIT/Nylon fiber as channels were prepared and their transistors performance was compared. It is found that PPy/GA-CHIT/Nylon fiber-based transistor has great output, transfer, transient curves, and excellent transconductance of 6.8 mS, providing a new platform for the field of wearable devices. Furthermore, the study introduces chitosan material with excellent biocompatibility, which makes prepared transistors also have potential applications in the field of biosensing.

By a simple strategy of immersion in a CaCl2 solution, carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogels exhibited ultralow-temperature freezing resistance below −50 °C. In addition, the introduction of electrolyte ions endowed the hydrogels with electrical conductivity, showing stable and reversible sensitivity to human activity, such as finger bending, pressing, and pharyngeal swallowing. The conductive carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogels could even be assembled into a two-dimensional integrated array of contact sensors, which successfully perceived the contour and pressure distribution of an object with a certain resolution. These transparent biological-based antifreezing conductive hydrogels are promising to find applications in integrated wearable sensing devices under extremely low temperature environments.

Uncontrolled hemorrhage poses a severe life-threatening situation. However, traditional hemostats still have various limitations. It is urgent to develop a material with excellent biocompatibility and hemostatic ability. Evidence has shown that carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) has hemostatic properties and good compatibility. Herein, we develop an expandable hemostatic sponge by modifying CMCS with cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) through the CO-NH cross-linking method. We verified its potential as a hemostatic agent both in vivo and in vitro . The results demonstrated that the prepared carboxymethyl chitosan/cellulose nanofiber composite (CNF-CMCS) sponges could absorb blood, quickly expand to exert pressure in the wound, and exhibit an excellent coagulation ability. The CNF-CMCS sponges significantly decreased the bleeding time and blood loss in several hemorrhage models and possessed a significant advantage in treating the deep penetrating injury hemorrhage. Therefore, the sponges provide a unique application prospect and potential as a penetrating trauma hemostatic agent.
