The widespread use of antibiotics has exacerbated water pollution, especially as traditional flocculation methods struggle to effectively remove persistent dissolved pollutants. Traditional coagulants often fall short of high-quality water standards due to residual toxicity and degradation issues. In contrast, natural polysaccharide-based polymeric flocculants show great promise. This study developed an efficient composite coagulation system using the complex coacervation method, enabling in situ self-assembly of chitosan (CS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in aqueous solution. The formation conditions were optimized via conductivity and Zeta potential analyses. FTIR, XPS, and SEM were used to probe the composite's microscopic structure and mechanism. Results showed the CS-CMC system outperformed chitosan alone, achieving a 99.70 % turbidity removal rate in simulated Yellow River water. It also efficiently removed various pollutants, with 87.60 % norfloxacin (NOR) and 50.12 % tetracycline (TC) removal rates. The adsorption kinetics of NOR and TC followed pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models, indicating unique interaction mechanisms beyond simple adsorption, with TC adhering to the Langmuir model and Temkin model, NOR to the Freundlich model. This eco-friendly flocculant offers an efficient, multifunctional solution for green water treatment.

The escalating global freshwater crisis demands urgent development of high-performance desalination technologies. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) has emerged as an energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable technology for seawater purification, yet its practical adoption remains hindered by persistent challenges: performance degradation under prolonged operation, and inherent discontinuity of solar energy day and night. Herein, we propose a novel all-day solar-driven interfacial evaporators by solar-thermoelectric cogeneration system, which synergistically integrates a magnetically responsive Janus CS@Fe₃O₄/SA-MF evaporator with thermoelectric generator (TEG) and solar cells. The Janus evaporator fabricated by a facile two-step dip-coating methodology, features engineered asymmetric wettability (contact angle contrast: 152.5° vs. 0°) and exceptional broadband absorption (>99% across 250–2500 nm). Under solar irradiation (1 sun), the system achieved an exceptional evaporation rate of 2.678 kg·m⁻²·h⁻¹ over 10 hours with 96% efficiency, while simultaneously generating electricity according to the Seebeck effect (maximum output: 116 mV, 6.32 mA). Remarkably, due to the Peltier effect, the energy storage of the solar cell enabled sustained nocturnal operation, maintaining an evaporation rate of 1.088 kg·m⁻²·h⁻¹ (7 times of pure water). The synergistic design utilizes solar evaporation during the day and energy conversion at night to effectively overcome the barrier of dependence on sunlight. This work proposed cogeneration strategy opens new avenues for sustainable freshwater production and decentralized energy supply in water-energy nexus applications.

As a key compound widely used in textile, cosmetic, fire protection, and packaging industries, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) pollutes the environment via the hydrological cycle and enters the human body through the food chain, causing severe toxicity to reproductive, endocrine, and liver systems. Thus, highly sensitive detection of trace PFOS in water is crucial for protecting life and health. Based on this, a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on a chitosan/MXene/gold nanoparticle (CS/MXene/AuNPs) composite was developed for ultra-trace PFOS detection. MXene, with a high specific surface area and excellent conductivity, served as the substrate, enhancing electron transport via in situ AuNP reduction, while CS improved interfacial stability. Using PFOS as a template and pyrrole as the functional monomer, specific imprinted sites were constructed on the electrode via electropolymerization. Synergistic effects of MXene (conductive framework), AuNPs (catalyzing redox), and CS (immobilizing imprinted layer) boosted sensitivity. Results showed a linear range of 1.0 × 101–1.0 × 109 pg mL−1, detection limit of 7.9 pg mL−1 (S/N = 3), and 98.02–102.04% recovery in spiked samples. This strategy provides a selective and low-cost paradigm for monitoring persistent organic pollutants. Furthermore, it holds significant potential for supporting global environmental safety networks, aiding in pollution-induced disease control, and safeguarding ecological security, human health, and sustainable development.

In this study, a new and efficient sorbent material was developed by the surface modification of zeolite Y with surfactant of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and amino acid of l -aspartic acid (Asp) for rapid removal of Sr 2+ , Cs + and UO 2 2+ in solution. The as-synthesized and modified zeolite Y were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. The results showed that after first grafting the cations of CTAB on the external surface of zeolite Y crystals, negatively charged Asp was then successfully introduced onto zeolite to form the CTAB + Asp dually modified zeolite Y sorbent . The fraction of CTAB and Asp in dually modified zeolite Y is 9.6 wt % and 16.3 wt %, respectively. The sorption isotherm of UO 2 2+ , Sr 2+ and Cs + by such sorbent was better fitted by Langmuir model. The CTAB + Asp dually modified zeolite Y took 20 min to reach the maximum sorption amount, while the unmodified zeolite Y took 240 min. This encouraging result provides a new concept to design sorbent materials for rapid removal of radionuclides from contaminated water system in an emergency.

The formation process of contaminated groundwater is invariably associated with pH fluctuations caused by the intrusion of anthropogenic contaminants, including heavy metals and organic compounds. In this study, a pH-responsive CaO 2 nanocomposite wrapped in chitosan (CS/CaO 2 ) was successfully synthesized via a pH-regulated chemical precipitation method. The CS/CaO 2 exhibited a well-defined core-shell bilayer structure with particle sizes ranging from 100 to 200 nm. Significantly, the incorporation of the chitosan (CS) coating not only enhanced the pH responsiveness but also reduced nanoparticle agglomeration. The sequence of reagent addition was found to be critical in achieving successful encapsulation. Simulation experiments were performed to assess the remediation effect on organic p- nitrophenol (PNP) and inorganic heavy metals. The inner core CaO 2 , acting as a solid source of H 2 O 2 , would be released as the external CS was broken after experiencing pH response. A CaO 2 modified Fenton system was then provided for the oxidative degradation of PNP, and its concurrently generated Ca(OH) 2 could facilitate the precipitation and immobilization of heavy metals. Removal efficiency exceeded 95 % under the optimized experimental conditions, demonstrating the high effectiveness of this approach. Overall, this study presents an enhanced pH-responsive nucleocapsid CS/CaO 2 nanocomposite with promising applications in the multi-contaminant remediation.

Water vapor plays a pivotal role in both the crystallization of CsPbBr-based perovskites and the operational stability of devices incorporating these materials. However, previous studies on this topic have been limited to indirect ex situ observation. Here, we utilize in situ environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) to directly monitor the dynamic growth of CsPbBr-based perovskite at a water vapor pressure of 609 Pa (equivalent to 75% relative humidity at 4 °C) under a controlled gas atmosphere. Our real-time in situ observation captures the concomitant and direct crystallization of CsPb 2 Br 5 and CsPbBr 3 , challenging the conventional phase-transition-mediated formation pathway. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the dual emission in the mixture of CsPbBr 3 and CsPb 2 Br 5 originates from distinct emissive centers, in contrast to the self-absorption and re-emission mechanism in rod-like CsPbBr 3 . These findings offer direct evidence of water-vapor-mediated crystallization and their impact on material performance, thereby paving the way for both the design of environmentally stable perovskite-based devices and future ESEM investigations into complex multiphase processes.

Thick microwave-absorbing coatings are essential for electromagnetic stealth and protection applications. However, during thermal spraying processes, the microstructural evolution induced by increasing coating thickness and cumulative thermal exposure significantly alter the dielectric response and absorption performance – a phenomenon that has not been systematically clarified. This study systematically examines the thickness-dependent dielectric behavior of TPU/MWCNTs coatings fabricated via flame spraying, revealing that absorption performance deteriorates sharply beyond a critical thickness of 50 μm. Specifically, as the coating thickness increases from 50 μm to 138 μm, the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) decreases from −24.8 dB to −14.1 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) narrows from 5.2 GHz to 1.0 GHz. To address this issue, an innovative porous structure engineering strategy is proposed, wherein WPU replaces TPU and a water/ethanol co-solvent is employed to promote the formation of vertical pores within the coating. This approach significantly enhances the connectivity of conductive fillers along the thickness direction, effectively balancing polarization loss and conductive loss while optimizing both impedance matching and attenuation. The optimized porous coating achieves an exceptional RL min of −50 dB, an EAB of 5.2 GHz, and a maximum RCS of 29.8 dBm 2 . This structural design strategy not only mitigates the performance degradation in thick coatings but also provides a viable route for fabricating lightweight, broadband, and highly efficient microwave-absorbing coating.

An electrochemical MIP sensor for MT was developed. • MT recognition via hydrogen bonding/π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions. • This sensor was simple, rapid, sensitive, and highly selective. • The sensor achieves the detection of MT in milk and serum. The detection of melatonin (MT) is essential for the clinical diagnosis of mental illnesses. In this study, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and chitosan (CS) to enhance its electrical conductivity and adhesiveness. L-tyrosine (L-tyr) was selected as the functional monomer and electropolymerized with MT to form the biocompatible MIP-MT imprinted layer. The specific recognition of MT by MIP-MT is facilitated by hydrogen bonding and π - π interactions between L-tyr and MT. Additionally, the electrostatic interaction between positively charged CS and negatively charged MT further contributes to the synergistic recognition with MIP-MT. Under optimized conditions, the IF value of MIP-MT reached 3.6. Furthermore, MIP-MT exhibited a detection limit of 0.0979 μM for MT and showed a linear relationship within the range of 0.1–100 μM. MIP-MT demonstrated recovery rates of 93.86%–99.14% in milk, presenting an innovative approach for disorders associated with MT biomarker levels. With the surging demand for rubidium and cesium, rubidium and cesium extraction resources have gradually expanded from ores to brines to ensure the security of supply of key metals. However, traditional adsorbents of heteropoly salts inevitably suffer from environmental pollution risks, unsustainability, and cumbersome process flows. In this study, potassium phosphotungstate is employed as an ammonium-free adsorbent for sustainably extracting Rb and Cs from salt lake brine. K 3 PW 12 O 40 shows high adsorption capacity (37.71 mg/g for Rb and 60.42 mg/g for Cs) and fast adsorption kinetics (adsorption equilibrium within only 2 min). The adsorbent also exhibits excellent selectivity, with the separation coefficients of Rb/K up to 167.95 and those of Cs/K up to 759.07. It also maintains chemical stability within a broad pH range of 2–10. The desorption efficiency of rubidium and cesium is up to 99.8 % and 85.6 % respectively. After five desorption-adsorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of Rb and Cs remains at 99.8 % and 86.7 % of the initial adsorption capacity. The adsorbent selectively adsorbs Rb + and Cs + from the practical brine even in the presence of a large number of co-existing ions. The Rb and Cs adsorption mechanism for K 3 PW 12 O 40 was primarily ionic exchange with K. The adsorption process provides excellent performance and environmental advantages based on the salt lake industrial cluster. Efficient adsorption performance of Rb and Cs was achieved without the emission of ammonia nitrogen pollutants and the use of ammonium salt chemicals. This study offers a sustainable alternative for extracting Rb and Cs from salt lake brine.

An electrochemical immunosensor was fabricated to identify CA15-3, a biomarker for breast cancer (BC). A composite sensor substrate made of “zeolitic imidazolate framework-8” (ZIF-8) and “reduced graphene oxide” (rGO) was chosen and its conductivity was further improved by the addition of chitosan (CS)-doped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The CS@AuNPs are able to conjugate with antibodies via the strong Au-S interaction, which offers multiple active sites for antibody immobilization and enhances the sensor performance. This immunosensor is capable of ultrasensitive detection of CA15-3 by specific antigen–antibody –interactions. In healthy people, normal serum CA15-3 is up to 25 U/mL. Under optimized experimental conditions, the alteration in the signal intensity measured by the sensor was related to the CA15-3 activity. The quantitative relationship was linear over 0.001–400 U/mL with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0031 U/mL at a “signal-to-noise ratio” (S/N) of 3 and a “correlation coefficient” (r2) of 0.9983. The developed immunosensor showed great accuracy, stability, and selectivity, and was able to detect CA15-3 in human serum samples. These results validate its potential as a reliable analytical platform for BC diagnosis and early clinical screening.

In this work, a stimuli-responsive SERS biosensor was fabricated for tetracycline (TTC) by “signal-on” strategy using (EDTA)-driven polyethyleneimine grafted calcium carbonate ( [email protected] 3 ) microcapsule and chitosan-Fe magnetic microbeads ( [email protected] ). Initially, aptamer conjugated magnetic-bead [email protected] @Apt with superparamagnetism and excellent biocompatibility was employed as capture probe, which facilitated the rapid and easy magnetic separation. Subsequently, the PEI cross-linked layer and aptamer network layer were constructed onto the outer layer of CaCO 3 @4-ATP microcapsule to form sensing probes ( [email protected] 3 @ [email protected] ) via the layer-by-layer assembly method. In the presence of TTC, a sandwich SERS-assay was exploited by aptamer recognition induced target-bridged strategy. When the solution of EDTA was added, the core layer of CaCO 3 would be dissolved quickly, destroying the microcapsule to release 4-ATP. The released 4-ATP could be quantitatively monitored by dripping the supernatant onto the [email protected] SERS platform, resulting in a strong Raman “signal-on”. Under the optimal conditions, a good linear relationship was established with a correlation coefficient ( R 2 ) of 0.9938 and a LOD of 0.03 ng/mL. Additionally, the application capacity of the biosensor to detect TTC was also affirmed in food matrixes, and the results were consistent with the standard ELISA method ( P > 0.05). Hence, this SERS biosensor affords extensive application prospects for TTC detection with multiple merits such as high sensitivity, environment friendliness, and high stability.

For patients receiving organ transplants, monitoring the blood concentration of MPA can provide timely information on whether MPA has reached the effective therapeutic window to better function while reducing the incidence of rejection or adverse reactions. In this study, an electrochemical sensor for the detection of MPA was built using a nanocomposite made of CS-MWCNT and AuNPs. At the same time, the high performance liquid phase (HPLC) method for MPA was established and compared with this sensor. The surface morphology, structure, and roughness of the material on the electrode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The standard curve was obtained in blank plasma, not pure buffer solution. The peak current was linearly related to the MPA concentration in the linear range of 0.001–0.1 mM with a detection limit of 0.05 μM and good anti-interference ability. Moreover, the sensor was employed with success for the determination of MPA in rat plasma with good recovery. The electrochemical sensor presented here is eco-friendly, and sensitive, and offers a great possibility for practical applicability.
