Background Breast cancer is the most diagnosed malignancy and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally. Cuproptosis plays a significant role in tumor progression and therapeutic response. Increasing studies suggest that targeting cuproptosis presents a promising strategy for cancer therapy, such as through the development of copper nanoparticles as therapeutic agents. However, resistance to cuproptosis has emerged as a critical hallmark of cancer. Therefore, it is essential to further investigate the mechanisms underlying cuproptosis resistance to enhance its therapy effect. Methods The relationship between breast cancer progression and the C5a/C5aR pathway or cuproptosis was determined by single-cell RNA sequencing analyses, RNA-sequence analyses, bioinformatic analyses, survival analyses and immunohistochemistry. The antitumor effects of CuS nanoparticles and C5a receptor antagonists (C5aRA) were assessed by in vitro and in vivo strategies including cell counting kit-8, colony formation assay, relative reactive oxygen species level assay, western blots, real-time quantitative PCR, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence assay, flow cytometry and the xenograft mice models. Complement system activation by CuS nanoparticles was tested by ELISA. Results Our results indicated that activation of the C5a/C5aR pathway contributes to cuproptosis resistance by upregulating ATP7B expression via the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Consequently, combining CuS nanoparticles with lazer treatment and C5aRA markedly enhanced the antitumor efficacy of CuS nanoparticles by overcoming cuproptosis resistance, leading to a synergistic effect in cancer therapy that included cuproptosis-targeting therapy, immunotherapy, and photothermal therapy. Conclusions This study reports, for the first time, proved C5a/C5aR pathway-mediated cuproptosis resistance in cancer cells, and combining CuS nanoparticles and C5aRA offers a superior and novel therapeutic strategy for cancer.

Photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in seawater provides an efficient, cost-effective and sustainable pathway for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production. However, developing the stable and high-efficiency seawater photocatalysts remains a crucial challenge due to the high concentration of Cl − and rapid charge carrier recombination rate. Here we fabricated 2D/2D CuS/CaIn 2 S 4 (CuS/CIS) heterostructured photocatalysts for visible-light-driven H 2 O 2 photosynthesis from seawater and O 2 under ambient condition. The introduction of CuS in CuS/CIS composites benefited superior light harvesting and the charge carrier separation. The optimized 5-CuS/CIS had an exceptional H 2 O 2 photosynthesis rate of 1194.0 μmol∙g −1 ∙h −1 with stable reusability in seawater, outperforming their counterparts. Additionally, 5-CuS/CIS possesses the higher H 2 O 2 photosynthesis rate in seawater and single salt-based solutions than that in deionized water. The corresponding enhancement mechanism of H 2 O 2 photosynthesis in seawater was discussed in depth. Thorough experimental analysis and theoretical calculations corroborate the two-step one-electron ORR path for H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. Through systematic characterization, we pinpoint the photo-reduction active sites governing H 2 O 2 formation and reveal optimized interfacial charge transfer pathways. This study offers new insights into designing stable heterostructured photocatalysts to facilitate charge carrier separation and achieve high-efficiency for H 2 O 2 photosynthesis from seawater.

The cotton cellulose nanofibers(CCNFs)/ZnO/CuS nanocomposites have been successfully fabricated by the electrospun-hydrothermal method and successive ionic layer adsorption. The results of XRD, SEM and TEM indicate that the CuS are successfully combined with the ZnO. The photocatalytic activity of the CCNFs/ZnO/CuS nanocomposites is investigated by the degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation, and it is demonstrated to be significantly enhanced after the CuS is introduced. Furthermore, the direct interfacial charge transfer of the ZnO/CuS is considered as the main reason for the enhancement.

Low-cost transition metal sulfides have been shown to be ideal candidates for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . However, most preparation processes have long reaction times and high energy consumption. In this work, CuS/ZnCdS heterojunction was prepared by a rapid and energy-saving microwave method . It was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD , XPS , and photoelectrochemical tests. The results showed that CuS was successfully loaded with ZnCdS and did not alter the intrinsic structure of ZnCdS. It not only improved the light absorption efficiency, but lowered the position of the conduction band and reduced the forbidden band width. The optimum photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of CuS/ZnCdS could get 7.58 mmol g −1 h −1 and the AQE was 10.07% at 420 nm. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction to promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. This work provides a valuable route to explore high quality ZnCdS based photocatalysts using a fast, low-cost microwave technique.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the important half-reactions in energy conversion equipment such as water-spitting devices, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and so on. It is beneficial to develop efficient and low-cost catalysts that understand the reaction mechanism of OER and analyze the reconstruction phenomenon of transition metal sulfide. Interestingly, copper sulfide and cuprous sulfide with the same components possess different reconstruction behaviors due to their different metal ion valence states and different atomic arrangement modes. Because of a unique atomic arrangement sequence and certain cationic defects, the reconstruction phenomenon of CuS nanomaterials are that S 2− is firstly oxidized to SO 4 2− and then Cu x + is converted into CuO via Cu(OH) 2 . In addition, the specific “modified hourglass structure” of CuS with excellent conductivity is easier to produce intermediates. Compared with Cu 2 S, CuS exhibits excellent OER activity with a lower overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and remarkable electrochemical stability in 1.0 m KOH for 120 h. Herein, this study elucidates the reconstruction modes of CuS and Cu 2 S in the OER process and reveals that CuS has a stronger Cu S bond and a faster electronic transmission efficiency due to “modified hourglass structure,” resulting in faster reconstruction of CuS than Cu 2 S.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease induced by a plaque biofilm, which can lead to the destruction of the periodontal support tissue and even teeth loss. The common strategies of periodontitis treatment are to eliminate bacterial/biofilm-related inflammation and subsequently inhibit alveolar bone resorption, for which antibiotic therapy is the most traditional one. However, impenetrable polymeric substances on bacterial biofilms make it difficult for traditional antimicrobial agents to take effect. In this study, a novel nanoparticle protease-loaded CuS NPs was developed, combining the advances of photodynamic and photothermal therapy from CuS and enzymatic degradation of the biofilm by a protease. The photothermal activity and the reactive oxygen generation capacity of the designed nanoparticles were verified by the experimental results, constituting the basis of antibacterial function. Next, the high antimicrobial activity of CuS@A NPs onFusobacterium nucleatumand its biofilm was demonstrated. The proper hemo/cytocompatibility of CuS-based NPs was demonstrated by in vitro assays. Last, effective treatment against periodontitis was achieved in a rat periodontitis model through the significant efficacy of inhibiting bone resorption and alleviating inflammation. Thus, the developed CuS@A NPs prove a promising material for the management of periodontitis.

The tribological properties of metal-CuS/MoS2 composite coatings were improved by selecting the metal materials and optimizing the heat treatment process. The composite coatings were prepared by magnetron cosputtering of copper or aluminum metals, CuS, and MoS2. Then, the prepared Cu-CuS/MoS2 and Al-CuS/MoS2 were subjected to vacuum heat treatment at 220, 320, and 420 °C. The structure and tribological properties of the composite coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, energy spectrum, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum, and multifunction friction tester. The results showed an island-like growth and a dense noncylindrical cross-sectional morphology of the metal-CuS/MoS2 composite coating. Metal- and CuS-doped MoS2 solid solution is a practical component in composite coatings. The wear scar of the composite coatings showed different color layers at different annealing temperatures due to composition deviation. After heat treatment at 320 °C, the friction coefficient of Cu-CuS/MoS2 coating was reduced to a minimum of 0.08. After heat treatment at 420 °C, the Al-CuS/MoS2 coating showed three different color layers of wear scar, and good tribological properties were obtained. The friction coefficient of the Al-CuS/MoS2 coating was as low as 0.06, and the adhesion of the Al-CuS/MoS2 coating was expressed in the HF1 level. The results show that the vacuum heat treatment can stimulate the action of CuS by forming a solid solution with MoS2, complementing the missing S atom during the sputtering deposition of MoS2 and improving the lubrication of the composite coating. In addition, although the action mechanisms are different, Cu and Al doping are all conducive to obtaining composite coatings with better tribological properties.

Nanoenzyme-mediated antibacterial strategies have been widely exploited to overcome the shortcomings (such as drug resistance and mild-to-severe side effects) of antibiotic therapy. The peroxidase-like activity of nanoenzymes possesses great potential against bacterial infection by the generation of hydroxyl radical (·OH) in the specific microenvironment. However, the lifetime of ·OH is extremely short, and a large amount of the ·OH generated within the infection microenvironment cannot come into contact with bacteria quickly enough, thus resulting in low treatment efficiency. Here, chitosan-oligosaccharide-modified CuS nanoparticles possessing positive charges (PCuS NPs) were prepared using a one-pot method. PCuS NPs exhibited efficient peroxidase-like activity. Importantly, the PCuS NPs can combine with bacteria via electrostatic attraction. The direct contact between the PCuS NPs and bacteria enabled the generation of ·OH in situ on the bacterial surface, ultimately leading to a high antibacterial efficacy at a low concentration in the presence of H 2 O 2 . At an effective antibacterial concentration, the PCuS NPs exhibited high cytocompatibility. Furthermore, in vivo results revealed that PCuS NPs not only decreased the size of abscesses but also reduced inflammation and promoted collagen fiber formation. Therefore, PCuS NPs possess great potential against bacterial infection via in situ ·OH generation based on electrostatic attraction. Graphical abstract

In this study, TiO2/CuS nanocomposites with cauliflower-like protrusions were successfully prepared using a simple one-step hydrothermal method with the assistance of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA). The TiO2 and CuS formed heterojunction materials with a stable crystal phase during hydrothermal treatment. The as-prepared TiO2/CuS was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Besides, the photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite material was detected in Rhodamine B (RhB) solution. Results indicate that TiO2/CuS nanocomposites exhibit higher photocatalytic performance than the TiO2 and CuS controls, this can be attributed to their distinctive morphology, strong light absorption capacity and effective promotion of the heterojunction between TiO2 and CuS.

In view of recent advances in photodegradation of antibiotics, low cost and stable photocatalyst remain rare. In this article, shape-controlled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes with the larger specific surface area were successfully prepared via a simple template-engaged strategy. Cu2O nanocubes were synthesized through a reduction method as original templates, the core-shelled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes were formed by sulphuration with Na2S as sulphur source, and the Cu2O core can be incompletely removed by Na2S2O3 to generate the Cu2O@CuS nanoboxes. Herein, hierarchical nanoboxes with two-layered Cu2O@CuS were used as photocatalyst materials for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The obtained nanocubes manifested high specific surface area (39.65 m2 g−1) and large pore volume (12.3 cm3 g−1). The degradation performance for TC was investigated in detail, including the effect of parameters such as photocatalyst, pH and catalyst dosage. The results indicated that degradation efficiencies were higher than 90% under visible light. Moreover, the degradation efficiency was 71% after six times.

Hydrogen production by electrochemical overall water splitting is an economic and green approach to resolve the looming energy and environmental crisis. However, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) generally occurs at low rate due to the delayed reaction kinetics of four-electron transfer. Herein, a kind of crater-like micro-nano structure CuS three-dimensional electrode that was supported on a Cu foam was prepared and used as an electrode anode for overall water splitting. The superhydrophilic/underwater superaerophobic structure can significantly reduce the bubble adhesion on the electrode surface and improve the OER performance. The CuS/CF electrode showed good wettability and superaerophobicity with an underwater contact angle of 153.5°. The CuS/CF (CuS/Cu foam) electrode has been proved to have excellent electrocatalytic activity for water decomposition. In 1.0 M KOH solution, the OER overpotential is 350 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope is 83 mV dec −1 . In acidic medium of 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, the overpotential of hydrogen evolution (HER) is 134 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope is 114 mV dec −1 . The underwater superaerophobic electrode still has strong stability after 10 h test. This work provides a new potential electrochemical catalyzed approach to water decomposition by constructing a super-infiltration electrode.

In order to effectively avoid the side effects induced by multiple components and tedious synthesis process, a simple therapy system based on one material to simultaneously realize both photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) under single laser irradiation will promote the overall phototherapeutic efficiency and make the PTT/PDT system easier to operate. Here, by using transferrin (Tf) as protein template, ultrasmall [email protected] nanodots ( [email protected] NDs) were successfully synthesized through a facile one-pot protein-based biomineralization method. The obtained [email protected] NDs exhibited not only excellent photothermal conversion ability (34.4%) but also high photoactivated formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. By loading the drug doxorubicin (DOX) to [email protected] NDs, a synergistic therapy system with multiple therapeutic effects combined PTT, PDT, chemotherapy (CT) and tumor targeting properties could be perfectly implemented together by [email protected] NDs without any complicated post-modification process. Results from the in vitro cell experiments confirmed that these [email protected] NDs could produce excellent effect on cancer cells with 88.5% cell inhibition rate. In comparison with the complicated systems based on “multiple-components-in-one” strategy, this therapy system based on one single material but possess multifunctional purpose is easy to operate and more suitable for clinical applications.
