In-Situ covalent synthesis of gold nanorods on GO surface as ultrasensitive Raman probe

Jian Guo,Li Yan,Jian Geng,Geng Zhu,Guo-Zhi Han

In this paper, using thiolated graphene oxide (GO-O-SH) as substrate, gold nanorods (AuNRs) covalently linked to the GO surface by in-situ seed growth method were first reported. The as-prepared composites were characterized by UV–vis spectrum, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Experimental results indicated that the introduction of short flexible organic chain between GO and AuNRs contributed to the homogenous synthesis of gold rods, and uniform gold nanorods with aspect ratio within 3~8 were covalently linked to the surface of GO with high stability and yield. The strategy represented an outstanding improvement in comparison to the traditional route for fabricating GO@AuNRs composites. Furthermore, based on coupling of the two nanomaterials, the composites could act as high sensitive Raman probe with limit of detection (LOD) reaching 1 × 10 −12 M.

A Flexible Capacitive Humidity Sensor Enabled by LIG-Anchored Synergistic GO-PEDOT:PSS-MXene Composite

Jitong Ren,Ronghui Dan,Yanyan Guo,Jiang Zhao

Indispensable roles in personalized health monitoring and human–machine interaction are played by flexible humidity sensors. However, high costs and complex vacuum processes are often involved in current fabrication methods, thereby restricting their broader applications. In this work, a high-performance flexible capacitive humidity sensor is presented, wherein a ternary composite of graphene oxide, PEDOT:PSS, and MXene (GO-PEDOT:PSS-MXene) is loaded onto a laser-induced graphene (LIG) interdigitated electrode. A pronounced synergistic effect among the three components is systematically exploited by this multidimensional architecture to significantly optimize the overall sensing performance. Within a relative humidity range extending from 11% to 97%, a remarkable measurement sensitivity of 18,643.02 μF/%RH is recorded. Furthermore, a characteristic negative capacitive response is consistently induced by moisture-driven microstructural swelling, by which the internal interlayer spacing is increased. The continuous monitoring of human respiratory rhythms and precise non-contact spatial sensing is successfully enabled by rapid response and recovery times of 31.7 s and 11.2 s, respectively. Uniquely, a vacuum-free, synergistic multidimensional architecture is successfully utilized to achieve an ultrahigh sensitivity. Practically, a highly scalable and low-cost paradigm is established by this research for the mass deployment of future wearable electronic systems across diverse monitoring scenarios.

3D MnO2/GO-cellulose sponge enabling salt-resistant interfacial evaporation and efficient antibiotic degradation

Tielin Du,Yuxiao Ran,Lang Liu

Monolithic MnO 2 /GO-cellulose sponge couples solar evaporation with photocatalytic antibiotic degradation. • Evaporation rate of 1.40 kg m −2  h −1 and 85% tetracycline degradation achieved under one sun. • 78% degradation efficiency maintained in 10 wt% NaCl with zero surface salt crystallization. • “Mesopore-concentration and macropore-reflux” mechanism enables robust salt resistance. Simultaneous antibiotic removal and salt resistance remain a promising yet challenging frontier in solar-driven interfacial evaporation. Herein, we fabricated a three-dimensional super-hydrophilic cellulose sponge integrated with a MnO 2 /GO composite (MGCS) via polydopamine-assisted deposition, successfully coupling photothermal steam generation with photocatalysis. This composite architecture enables efficient broadband solar harvesting and suppresses photogenerated electron–hole recombination, thereby enhancing both photothermal evaporation and photocatalytic degradation. Under one sun irradiation, MGCS delivers an evaporation rate of 1.40 kg m −2  h −1 and degrades 85% of tetracycline (15 mg L −1 , 150 min). Crucially, in a 10 wt% NaCl matrix, the system maintains a 78% degradation efficiency with zero surface salt crystallization over 24 h of continuous operation. This exceptional salt tolerance originates from a synergistic anti-fouling mechanism driven by the negatively charged, super-hydrophilic surface and a dynamic “mesopore-concentration and macropore-reflux” structural architecture. Ultimately, this monolithic platform provides a robust material framework for purifying complex, hypersaline wastewaters. Download: Download high-res image (186KB) Download: Download full-size image

Hierarchically porous bamboo fiber@ GO-SiO2 composite membrane for efficient oil/water emulsion separation

Xu Haiyan,Guan Changjinsui,He Yubin,Mei Ting,Su Zhiping,Ning Liping

The discharge of oily wastewater posed severe threats to ecosystems and human health, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable and cost-effective membrane materials. In this study, a novel superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic BF@GO-SiO 2 membrane was constructed through a three-step process involving the delignification of bamboo powder, the blending of GO-SiO 2 hybrids for roughness enhancement, and subsequent vacuum filtration coupled with Polyethyleneimine (PEI) grafting to precisely modulate the pore structure and surface wettability. The resulting membrane exhibited a highly porous three-dimensional network structure, with surface roughness increasing proportionally to GO-SiO 2 content. Attributing to its cellulose-rich framework and robust hydration layer, the BF@GO-SiO 2 membrane achieved exceptional oil/water separation efficiency of 99.5% at high permeation fluxes of 535.2 L m −2 h −1 . Furthermore, the membrane demonstrated superior separation performance (up to 99.4%) for various oil-in-water emulsions, including surfactant-free and those stabilized by CTAB, Tween 80, and SDS. This outstanding performance was attributed to the synergistic effects of its excellent surface hydrophilicity, capillary forces and 3D water channels. The membrane also exhibited excellent durability, maintaining stable separation efficiency (above 98.0%) after 30 cycles and across a wide pH range. Furthermore, the composite membrane achieved a maximum tensile strength of 23.5 MPa, demonstrating its robust mechanical performance. This work provided a scalable strategy for fabricating high-performance separation membranes, offering significant potential for practical oily wastewater treatment applications. Graphical

Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs peroxidase-mimicking nanocomposite for synergistic adsorption and degradation of tetracyclines

Ji-Ying Song,Lei Pan,Fu-Hao Zhang,Xin-Yun Song,Qi Wu

The residues of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) in aquatic environments have led to pressing environmental issues, necessitating the development of efficient removal technologies. In this study, we constructed an adsorption-degradation synergistic system based on Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles/graphene oxide/layered double hydroxides (Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs) for the removal of TCs from water. This Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs composite ingeniously combines the adsorption advantages of both GO and LDHs: GO serves as a growth substrate for LDHs, effectively preventing the LDHs from agglomerating into bulk masses, while LDHs also inhibit the interlayer stacking of GO. This leads to enhanced specific surface area of up to 581.7 m 2 /g, establishing a robust structural foundation for efficient adsorption. The incorporation of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles not only endows the material with excellent magnetism for convenient magnetic separation and recovery but also utilizes its peroxidase-like activity to achieve catalytic degradation. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs for tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline reached 676.5 mg/g, 814.1 mg/g, and 808.1 mg/g, respectively, primarily driven by electrostatic, π-π and complexation interactions. In the presence of H₂O₂, Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs activating H₂O₂ to generate reactive oxygen species, achieving over 90% degradation rate within 1 h, demonstrating strong catalytic capability. Integrating adsorption with in-situ degradation, Fe₃O₄/GO/LDHs functions as a network of micro-reactor factories, rapidly concentrating pollutants at catalytic active sites and creating a high-local-concentration microenvironment that dramatically accelerates catalytic reactions, thereby enhancing overall degradation efficiency. This study advances the development of adsorption-degradation bifunctional nanozymes for water purification.

Rapid Joule-Heating Preparation of GO/GNs Graphene-Based Composite Films for Thermal Management

Ning Li,Jianyin Miao,Junhao Liu,Jing Li

Traditional metal heat sinks are limited by moderate thermal conductivity, high density, and poor flexibility, which restrict their use in compact and lightweight electronics. Graphene films offer high in-plane thermal conductivity, but rapid reduction of graphene oxide (GO) releases gases from oxygen-containing groups and can generate pores, interlayer damage, and poor film densification. Here, we report a precursor-design strategy that combines reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (GNs) with carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The composite films (GO/GNs-X) were prepared by blade coating, hot-press carbonization, and secondary Joule-heating graphitization. The combined precursor was designed to mitigate gas-release-induced damage and support carbon-network reconstruction during high-temperature treatment. The optimized GF, with a thickness of approximately 25 μm, reached an in-plane thermal conductivity of 950.5 ± 20 W m-1 K-1 and an electrical conductivity of 2.31 × 105 S m-1. At a comparable thickness, this thermal conductivity was 26.6% higher than that of an additive-free RGO-2600-ref film prepared without GNs/CNF modification. In LED heat-dissipation tests, the surface-centre temperature decreased from 83.7 to 40.4 °C. Because individual-additive controls were not included, the respective contributions of GNs and CNF could not be separated. These results establish combined precursor modification as a route to thin, lightweight graphene heat spreaders. Such films may be useful for thermal management in compact electronics, foldable devices, and aerospace systems.

Interfacial GO charge-bridge engineering reconstructs S-scheme charge flux for photocatalytic H2 evolution

Senhao Li,Xiaobo Han,Qingchun Wang,Fei Ruan,Xi Zhang,Jinxiao Bao,Yuwei Ma

GO kinetically reconstructs intrinsic S-scheme charge flux without altering its thermodynamic direction. • The GO bridge accelerates directional interfacial charge migration. • Continuous charge redistribution regulates Cd-site H* adsorption energetics. Interfacial charge regulation is crucial for improving S-scheme photocatalysts, yet the kinetic role of carbonaceous interfacial bridges remains insufficiently understood. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is introduced into a directly contacted g-C 3 N 4 /CdS S-scheme heterojunction to reconstruct its interfacial charge-transport network. The direct g-C 3 N 4 /CdS heterointerface determines the S-scheme charge-transfer direction through Fermi-level equilibration, band bending, and the resulting built-in electric field, whereas interfacially distributed GO primarily functions as an auxiliary charge bridge that strengthens electronic coupling and lowers the kinetic resistance of selective low-energy carrier recombination. In situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance, combined with work-function analysis, reveal directional photoinduced charge redistribution consistent with a GO-assisted S-scheme pathway. Photoluminescence, transient photocurrent, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further demonstrate suppressed charge recombination and improved interfacial carrier transport. Density functional theory calculations show that GO extends interfacial charge redistribution and shifts the calculated H* adsorption free energy at the Cd site closer to thermoneutrality relative to binary g-C 3 N 4 /CdS, yielding a ΔG H⁎ value of −0.29 eV. Consequently, g-C 3 N 4 /3GO/40CdS achieves a visible-light-driven H 2 evolution rate of 816.2 μmol g −1  h −1 , approximately 2.4 times that of binary g-C 3 N 4 /40CdS. Antibacterial Activity of GO-Based Composites Enhanced by Phosphonate-Functionalized Ionic Liquids and Silver

Xinyu Liu,Xing Zhao,Hongda Qiu,Weida Liang,Linlin Liu,Yunyu Sun,Lingling Zhao,Xiao Wang,Hongze Liang

The development of antibiotic-independent antimicrobial materials is critical for addressing bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of ionic liquid-modified composites in antimicrobial applications. Here, we innovatively prepared GO-based composites modified with phosphonate ionic liquids via a series of surface functionalizations. The resulting antibacterial composites exhibit significant broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including drug-resistant strains, with stronger efficacy against Gram-negative species. Additionally, the material features excellent long-term reusability and the ability to inhibit/destroy biofilms, which is vital for combating persistent infections. Mechanistic studies reveal its antibacterial effects through multiple pathways: disrupting bacterial membranes, inducing ROS, and inactivating intracellular substances—mechanisms less likely to promote resistance. Overall, these phosphonate ionic liquid-modified polycationic materials demonstrate substantial potential in treating bacterial infections, offering a promising strategy to tackle antibiotic resistance challenges.

Antibacterial chitosan aerogel with vertical pores and PPy@GO synergy for efficient solar desalination

Yuliang Zhang,Xinhao Yan,Ting Shu,Xiahui Liu,Yanhua Lei,Yuwen Huang,Tao Liu,Xiaobo Chen

The global freshwater shortage underscores the urgent need for efficient and sustainable desalination technologies. Solar-driven evaporation offers a promising solution due to its low energy demand and environmental compatibility, with photothermal materials and evaporator design being key to enhancing performance. In this study, chitosan-based aerogels have been used as the substrate, and a vertical channel structure has been prepared through unidirectional freezing technology in fabricating PPy@GO-CG (polypyrrole@graphene oxide-chitosan) aerogel evaporators. Experimental results have showed that under 1 kW·m −2 simulated solar light, the water evaporation rate can reach 3.79 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , and the solar steam conversion efficiency is as high as 96.16 %. In saline conditions, salt accumulation was not observed until after 60 h of continuous irradiation, indicating strong salt-rejection capability. The evaporator exhibits excellent long-term stability, salt resistance, and inherent antibacterial properties, ensuring both efficiency and reliability for practical use. This work thus offers a promising strategy for solar-driven seawater desalination and thermal energy conversion.

Efficient separation of Mg2+/Li+ using reduced GO membranes modified by positively charged arginine

Junbo Wang,Jie Jiang,Jing Wang,Shouyuan Hu,Jiahao Hu,Yalong Li,Zhiyu Tao,Chengju Wu,Pei Li,Liang Chen

Nanofiltration has emerged as an effective technique for the selective separation of mono- and divalent ions, such as Mg2+/Li+ mixtures, and plays a crucial role in lithium extraction from salt lakes. In this study, a graphene oxide (GO) membrane with positively charged channels was prepared by crosslinking arginine (Arg) onto GO nanosheets, followed by vacuum filtration to form the membrane, and then thermal reduction (Arg-rGO). The Arg-rGO membrane exhibits high performance in the ion separation of a typical brine with a Mg2+/Li+ mass ratio of 20. The separation factor (SLi/Mg) reached up to 45.6—two times the highest separation factor reported—while maintaining an advanced water permeance of 21.3 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. Furthermore, the Mg2+/Li+ mass ratio was reduced from 20 to 0.2 after two-stage crossflow filtration with high flux under high pressure. The observed separation performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of electrostatic repulsion and size-exclusion. These findings confirmed efficient separation of Mg2+/Li+ using GO membranes, demonstrating potential for practical application in lithium extraction from salt lakes.

Low-pressure loose GO composite membrane intercalated by CNT for effective dye/salt separation

Lili Huang,Zhiying Li,Yang Luo,Ning Zhang,Wenxu Qi,En Jiang,Junjiang Bao,Xiaopeng Zhang,Wenji Zheng,Baigang An,Gaohong He

Low-pressure loose nanofiltration membranes were facilely fabricated by intercalating CNTs into graphene oxide (GO) laminates supported by cellulose acetate (CA) ultrafiltration substrates. The CNTs could loosen the GO laminar film and enlarge the interlayer spacing of GO laminates, thus reducing the resistance of water flux and salt permeation. Crosslinking bonds between GO layers were generated to create hydro-stable size-sieving channel necks of the tortuous pathway for selective molecular permeation. It was found that the GO composite membrane with 80 wt% of CNT content and 0.5 mg of GO loading exhibited the optimal separation performance in the application of textile wastewater treatment. It had the highest pure water permeability of 26.3 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and almost complete rejection to dyes (e.g. 98.7% for Congo red, 94.1% for Methyl blue) as well as the lowest rejections to salts (e.g. 3.1% for NaCl, 6.3% for Na 2 SO 4 ) under a low transmembrane pressure of 1.0 bar. This work provides a feasible approach for designing GO-based membrane with improved dye/salt separation performance.

Surface modification of GO by PDA for dielectric material with well-suppressed dielectric loss

Yujia Kou,Wenying Zhou,Li Xu,Huiwu Cai,Guangheng Wang,Xiangrong Liu,Qingguo Chen,Zhi-Min Dang

To suppress the high dielectric loss of graphene oxide (GO)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) while maintaining high dielectric constant (high-k) near the percolation threshold, in this study, GO nanosheets coated with polydopamine (PDA) were integrated into PVDF to investigate the effects of the PDA shell and its concentrations on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. The results indicate that the dissipation factor and conductivity of the GO@PDA/PVDF are significantly suppressed to very low values compared with the pristine GO/PVDF composites, attributable to the PDA interlayer between the GO nanosheets which prevents them from direct contact with each other and remarkably reduces the leakage loss. Furthermore, activation energies of the GO/PVDF and GO@PDA/PVDF composites were calculated as 1.247 and 0.884 eV, respectively, indicating that the presence of PDA interlayer reduces the relaxation activation energy and makes the relaxation occur at low temperature for the GO@PDA/PVDF. The prepared GO@PDA/PVDF nanocomposites with high-k but low loss have potential applications in microelectronic engineering.
