A direct CH4 metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell with an engineered Ni/Gd-doped CeO2 anode containing Ni and MnO nanoparticles

Qihao Li,Xin Wang,Cheng Li,Xinwei Yang,Lichao Jia,Jian Li

NiMn 2 O 4 (NMO) coated Gd-doped CeO 2 (GDC) and NiO powders are prepared by a hydrothermal method for the anode of a metal (Ni-10 at.% Fe)-supported solid oxide fuel cell fueled by wet CH 4 (3 vol.% H 2 O). NMO remains on NiO but dissolves into GDC at 1400 °C. Upon reduction in H 2 at 700 °C for 2 h, Ni nanoparticles exsolve on the doped-CeO 2 (DCO) substrate (DCO@Ni), while MnO nanoparticles form on Ni (Ni@MnO). DCO@Ni demonstrates high catalytic activity for reforming wet CH 4 and high resistance to carbon deposition with a yield of H 2 increasing from 11 (500 °C) to 33 (700 °C) ml min −1 and remaining around 25 ml min −1 at 600 °C for 30 h. The metal-supported single-cell with a Ni@MnO-DCO@Ni anode shows high initial and durable electrochemical performance with a maximum power density increasing from 160 (500 °C) to 720 (700 °C) mW cm −2 and a cell voltage remaining above 0.55 V at 600 °C for 200 h under 400 mA cm −2 and 20 ml min −1 . Such high performance is ascribed to the metal support with low ohmic resistance and the engineered anode with high catalytic activity and enhanced resistance to carbon deposition.

Effect of doping rare earth oxides (RE= Sc, Y, Gd, Eu) on structural, thermal and mechanical properties of La2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7 ceramics

Xiaodong Wei,Yulong An,Zhenyu Bu,Huidi Zhou,Jianmin Chen

Rare-earth (RE) oxide-doped La 2 (Zr 0.7 Ce 0.3 ) 2 O 7 (LZC) has attracted great interest in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) because of its lower thermal conductivity . However, studies on the laws governing the effect of different types of RE oxide doping on the performance of LZC ceramics are limited. Therefore, in this study, different types of RE (Sc, Y, Gd and Eu) doped LZC ceramic bulks have been prepared using solid phase reaction method. The effects of RE doping on the crystal structure, mechanical properties and thermal properties of the LZC ceramics were investigated. The results indicated that all five ceramics exhibited a single pyrochlore phase structure, whereas their lattice constants were reduced after doping, with (La 0.85 Sc 0.15 ) 2 (Zr 0.7 Ce 0.3 ) 2 O 7 having the lowest lattice constant. The effect of rare earth doping on the grain growth of LZC was not evident; however, it could significantly improve the hardness of LZC. In addition, doping with all four RE ions significantly reduced the thermal conductivity of the LZC ceramics, and the most significant reduction was observed for Gd 3+ doping.

Preparation of Gd-doped AuNBP@mSiO2 nanocomposites for the MR imaging, drug delivery and chemo-photothermal synergistic killing of breast cancer cells

Shiyi Tang,Ruohan Li,Tao Luo,Tianhao Huang,Xiaotong Lu,Xinyao Wu,Yulin Dong,Changyu Wu,Kai Xu,Yong Wang

Under near-infrared (NIR) light, gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) exhibit a high photothermal conversion rate and photothermal stability, making them ideal mediators for photothermal therapy (PTT). In this study, highly purified AuNBPs are prepared, followed by coating their surfaces with mesoporous silica (mSiO2). The obtained AuNBP@mSiO2 nanocomplex exhibits an ellipsoidal shape with a relatively large specific surface, pore diameter and pore volume. To achieve MRI guided chemo-photothermal therapy of breast cancer cells, the nanocomplex is further coupled with the MRI contrast agent Gd-DTTA and the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX). The results indicated that under NIR light irradiation, AuNBPs exhibited promising PTT effects, while the cumulative release rate of DOX was significantly enhanced to 81.40%. Moreover, the chemo-photothermal therapy approach effectively eradicated 4T1 breast cancer cells. This work successfully confirms that chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy is an effective tumor treatment strategy and demonstrates the potential application of AuNBP@mSiO2 as a nano-drug delivery platform. Additionally, it introduces new ideas for the integrated study of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Phosphoric acid functionalized superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic UiO-66/polyester fabric composite membrane for efficient oil/water separation and Gd(III) recovery

Lifeng Yao,Shengzu Zhang,Ruobing Wang,Lei Zhang,Yi Wang,Weiyan Yin

Efficient treatment of complex rare earth (RE) smelting wastewater has drawn great attention due to its potential environmental toxicity and the high demand of RE in modern technologies . However, it is still a challenge to achieve the simultaneous recovering RE and separating oil from wastewater. This study makes the first attempt to fabricate a versatile membrane, namely H-UiO-66-PF2, by loading 2-hydroxyphosphono acetic acid functionalized UiO-66 on polyester fabric through one-pot reaction strategy, and reports for the first time the simultaneous separation of oil/water mixtures and recovery of Gd(III). The H-UiO-66-PF2 exhibits standout oil/water separation performance with water flux up to 126,300 L·m −2 ·h −1 and separation efficiency above 99.8 %. Besides, the maximum adsorption capacity of H-UiO-66-PF2 for Gd(III) is reached 156.5 mg/g, adsorption equilibrium time is within 60 min. Moreover, the H-UiO-66-PF2 possesses high stability and recyclability , even after 20 cycles, separation efficiency and flux are 98.9 % and 105,200 L·m −2 ·h −1 , respectively. Most notably, in addition to the separation of oil/water emulsion, complete Gd(III) capture is achieved from wastewater through filtration process . Therefore, this work provides a new design strategy to fabricate the composite membrane with great prospects for sophisticated smelting wastewater cleanup.

The effects of R2O3 (R=La, Yb, Gd) on the microstructure, dielectric, ferroelectric, and energy storage properties of Ba0.65Bi0.07Sr0.245TiO3 relaxor ferroelectric ceramics

Fukang Chen,Yilin Zhang,Yang Li,Yan Yan,Lishun Yang,Xinyu Zeng,Tao Deng,Huanghui Nie,Gang Liu,Lixue Zhang

(1- x )Ba 0.65 Bi 0.07 Sr 0.245 TiO 3 - x R 2 O 3 (BBST- x R) ceramics embellished by lanthanides (La, Yb, Gd) were synthesized in this study, and the effects in properties were ascertained. The results show that lanthanides with smaller ionic radius differences and larger relative mass will effectively limit mass transport of other cations and restrain grain growth. It is also found that the paraelectric phase of ceramics can be stabilized by decreasing the ionic radius of lanthanides. In particular, the addition of La unfolds the exceptional recoverable storage density ( W rec ) up to 2.23 J/cm 3 and efficiency ( η ) of ∼76.7% under 280 kV/cm. Finite element simulation and PFM observation also further explain the reasons for the excellent performance. Concurrently, BBST-0.015La ceramic exhibits outstanding thermostability from 30 °C to 150 °C and frequency stabilization from 1 Hz to 300 Hz which indicates the potentiality of application in actual surroundings.

Improving the Performance of Gd Addition on Catalytic Activity and SO2 Resistance over MnOx/ZSM-5 Catalysts for Low-Temperature NH3-SCR

Jinkun Guan,Lusha Zhou,Weiquan Li,Die Hu,Jie Wen,Bichun Huang

SO2poisoning is a great challenge for the practical application of Mn-based catalysts in low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions of NOxwith NH3. A series of Gadolinium (Gd)-modified MnOx/ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized via a citric acid–ethanol dispersion method and evaluated by low-temperature NH3-SCR. Among them, the GdMn/Z-0.3 catalyst with the molar ratio of Gd/Mn of 0.3 presented the highest catalytic activity, in which a 100% NO conversion could be obtained in the temperature range of 120–240 °C. Furthermore, GdMn/Z-0.3 exhibited good SO2resistance compared with Mn/Z in the presence of 100 ppm SO2. The results of Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction of H2(H2-TPR) and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3(NH3-TPD) illustrated that such catalytic performance was mainly caused by large surface area, abundant Mn4+and surface chemisorbed oxygen species, strong reducibility and the suitable acidity of the catalyst. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) results revealed that the addition of Gd greatly inhibited the reaction between the SO2and MnOxactive sites to form bulk manganese sulfate, thus contributing to high SO2resistance. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS experiments also shed light on the mechanism of low-temperature SCR reactions over Mn/Z and GdMn/Z-0.3, which both followed the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) and Eley–Rideal (E–R) mechanism.Keywords:SO2poisoning;low temperature;NH3-SCR;in situ DRIFTS

A Gd-doped polydopamine (PDA)-based theranostic nanoplatform as a strong MR/PA dual-modal imaging agent for PTT/PDT synergistic therapy

Yiyao Pu,Yuda Zhu,Zi Qiao,Nini Xin,Suping Chen,Jing Sun,Rongrong Jin,Yu Nie,Hongsong Fan

Based on widely used photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and photothermal properties of polydopamine (PDA), a multifunctional Gd–PDA-Ce6@Gd-MOF (GPCG) nanosystem with a core–shell structure and strong imaging ability was constructed. Benefitting from the metal–organic framework (MOF) structure, GPCG nanoparticles (NPs) showed enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ability with high relaxation rates (r1 = 13.72 mM−1 s−1 and r2 = 216.14 mM−1 s−1). The MRI effect of Gd ions combined with the PAI effect of PDA, giving GPCG NPs a dual-modal imaging ability. The core, mainly composed of PDA and photodynamic photosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6), achieved photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) synergistic performance. Besides, to overcome the unexpected release of Ce6, the MOF shell realized pH-sensitive release and a high local concentration. Through in vivo studies, we concluded that GPCG NPs show a good inhibitory effect on tumor growth. In conclusion, we successfully obtained a GPCG theranostic nanoplatform and paved the way for subsequent design of imaging guided therapeutic nanostructures based on metal-doped PDA.

Bin Xia,Xu Yan,Wei-Wei Fang,Sheng Chen,ZhiLin Jiang,JinChen Wang,Tian-Ci Sun,Qing Li,Zhen Li,Yang Lu,Tao He,BaoQiang Cao,Chang-Tong Yang

Activatable cell-penetrating peptide (ACPP) conjugated polymeric nanoparticles containing gadolinium (Gd)-chelates and aggregation-induced emission fluorogens (AIEgens) have been synthesized and applied as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence imaging (FI) bimodal imaging probe with active tumor targeting. The polymeric nanoparticles have been generated by dissolving presynthesized linear block copolymers into water directly. With AIEgens, N-BP5-Gd-ACPPs showed tumor cell penetration, which can be characterized by in vitro FI. Preliminary in vivo experiments of Gd-chelated nanoparticles have demonstrated promising characteristics as a tumor-targeting MRI contrast agent with good biocompatibility. This study impacts the synthesis of functional copolymers and polymeric nanoparticles for their applications in bioimaging.

Sol–gel combustion synthesis and antiferromagnetic properties of orthorhombic perovskite-type MFeO3:R3+ (M=La, Gd; R=Eu, Er, Ho) nanocrystalline powders

Peixi Hao,Linwen Jiang,Hanlei Zhao,Jiangtao Li,Shiwen Qiu,Hongbing Chen

The MFeO 3 : R 3+ (M = La, Gd; R = Eu, Er, Ho) nanocrystalline powders were successfully synthesized by the sol–gel combustion method using glycine-based gel at a low ignition temperature. The as-burnt products present honeycomb-like structure with many irregular continuous pores due to the releasing of a large amount of gas during the combustion reaction process. The lattice parameters and cell volumes of MFeO 3 :R 3+ (M = La, Gd; R = Eu, Er, Ho) nanocrystalline powders are compared in detail. The magnetic properties of all the samples were studied systematically. The results show that the doping of rare-earth ions enhanced greatly the coercivity of GdFeO 3 and LaFeO 3 as a result of the enhancement of magnetic anisotropy . The influence of doped rare-earth ions on the magnetic properties was summarized. The distinction of magnetism of MFeO 3 :R 3+ (M = La, Gd; R = Eu, Er, Ho) were explained in detail by the intrinsic magnetism of doped rare-earth ions. This work is significant for the application of rare-earth elements in other magnetic materials.

Gd-based upconversion nanocarriers with yolk–shell structure for dual-modal imaging and enhanced chemotherapy to overcome multidrug resistance in breast cancer

Yuanwei Pan,Ling'e Zhang,Leyong Zeng,Wenzhi Ren,Xueshan Xiao,Jichao Zhang,Lili Zhang,Aiguo Li,Guangming Lu,Aiguo Wu

Multidrug resistance (MDR) of cancers is still a major challenge, and it is very important to develop visualized nanoprobes for the diagnosis and treatment of drug resistant cancers. In this work, we developed a multifunctional delivery system based on DOX-encapsulated NaYF4:Yb/Er@NaGdF4 yolk–shell nanostructures for simultaneous dual-modal imaging and enhanced chemotherapy in drug resistant breast cancer. Using the large pore volume of the nanostructure, the delivery system had a high loading efficiency and excellent stability. Also, an in vitro and in vivo toxicity study showed the good biocompatibility of the as-prepared yolk–shell nanomaterials. Moreover, by nanocarrier delivery, the uptake of DOX could be greatly increased in drug resistant MCF-7/ADR cells. Compared with free DOX, the as-prepared delivery system enhanced the chemotherapy efficacy against MCF-7/ADR cells, indicating the excellent capability for overcoming MDR. Furthermore, core–shell NaYF4:Yb/Er@NaGdF4 improved the upconversion luminescence (UCL) performance, and the designed delivery system could also be applied for simultaneous UCL and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, which could be a good candidate as a dual-modal imaging nanoprobe. Therefore, we developed a multifunctional yolk–shell delivery system, which could have potential applications as a visualized theranostic nanoprobe to overcome MDR in breast cancer.

Inorganic photosensitizer coupled Gd-based upconversion luminescent nanocomposites for in vivo magnetic resonance imaging and near-infrared-responsive photodynamic therapy in cancers

Ling'e Zhang,Leyong Zeng,Yuanwei Pan,Song Luo,Wenzhi Ren,An Gong,Xuehua Ma,Hongze Liang,Guangming Lu,Aiguo Wu

Inorganic photosensitizer coupled Gd-based upconversion luminescent (UCL) nanocomposites have potential application for both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancers using the light stability and biocompatibility of TiO 2 inorganic photosensitizer. However, TiO 2 inorganic photosensitizer could only be excited by ultraviolet (UV) light, which was harmful and weakly penetrable in tissues. In this work, folic acid (FA)-targeted NaGdF 4 :Yb/Tm@SiO 2 @TiO 2 nanocomposites (FA-Gd-Si-Ti NPs) were constructed and synthesized for both in vivo MRI and near infrared (NIR)-responsive inorganic PDT, in which TiO 2 component could be excited by NIR light due to the UCL performance of NaGdF 4 :Yb/Tm component converting NIR to UV light. The results showed the as-prepared FA-Gd-Si-Ti NPs had good biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, MR study indicated that FA-Gd-Si-Ti NPs were good T 1 -weighted MRI contrast agents with high longitudinal relaxivity (r 1 ) of 4.53 m m −1  s −1 , also in vivo MRI of nude mice showed “bright” signal in MCF-7 tumor. Under the irradiation of 980 nm laser at the power density of 0.6 W/cm 2 for 20 min, the viability of HeLa and MCF-7 cells incubated with FA-Gd-Si-Ti NPs could decrease from about 90 % to 35 % and 31%, respectively. Furthermore, in vivo PDT of MCF-7 tumor-bearing nude mice model showed that the inhibition ratio of tumors injected with FA-Gd-Si-Ti NPs reached up to 88.6% after 2-week treatment, compared with that of nude mice in control group. Based on the deep penetration of NIR light and the good biocompatibility of TiO 2 inorganic photosensitizer, the as-prepared FA-Gd-Si-Ti NPs could have potential applications in both MRI and NIR-responsive PDT of cancers in deep tissues.

Black TiO2-based nanoparticles as Toll-like receptor stimulator delivery system for enhanced photothermal-immunotherapy of pancreatic cancer

Xu Liu,Wu Ruoyu,Ni Jiajing,Jin Lufei,Xu Kaiwei,Zhu Yuchao,Hong Lu,Chen Chunqu,Wang Linwei,Zhu Lubin,Zhou Weijian,Shen Wenqi,Wang Jianhua

Background The tumor-specific immune responses, essential for removing residual lesions and preventing tumor metastases, can be stimulated by tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) released following photothermal therapy (PTT). However, due to the immunosuppressed microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the TAAs released by PTT are difficult to induce an effective immune response. In this work, we prepared the mesoporous silica (mSiO 2 ) coated black titanium dioxide (bTiO 2 ) photothermal nanoparticles (NPs) for enhanced photothermal-immunotherapy toward PDAC, in which resiquimod (R848) was loaded and DOTA-Gd was conjugated. The NPs are specified as bTiO 2 @mSiO 2 @Gd/R848 and abbreviated to NPs/R848. R848 as a kind of Toll-like receptor 7/8 agonist can remodel the tumor microenvironment (TME) in PDAC and induce a strong immune response. Furthermore, DOTA-Gd serves as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent to improve the T 1 -weighted MRI performance of the NPs. Results In vitro results of this study show that NPs/R848 could thermally ablate tumor cells and efficiently trigger dendritic cell (DC) maturation. The results of in vivo investigations demonstrate that the combined use of photothermal-immunotherapy exhibits a significant inhibitory effect on tumor growth. Besides, it promoted maturation of DCs and enhanced infiltration of CD8 + , CD4 + T cells to improve the TME in PDAC. Conclusions Our study anticipates that by encouraging the maturation of DCs, this strategy will improve the TME and enable the successful photothermal-immunotherapy of PDAC.
