Synergy tetraethylenepentamine and diethanolamine impregnated within silica nanotubes derived from natural halloysite for efficient CO2 capture

Xiaoyu Li,Haoran Li,Xueqi Zhao,Yanrong Zhao,Bo Zhang,Keping Zhao,Kang Peng

Amine-impregnated porous solid adsorbents are promising commercial CO 2 capture adsorbents for CO 2 mitigation due to relatively large CO 2 capacity and high CO 2 selectivity . However, the intrinsic viscosity and aggregation of the polyamine leads to low amine efficiency and greatly limits its further development. In this work, a facile and efficient approach was carried out to manipulate the porosity of natural halloysite (HNTs) support with hollow tubular structure and impregnate mixed-polyamines, i.e., both tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and diethanolamine (DEA) to synergistically enhance CO 2 adsorption capacity , fast adsorption kinetics and thermal/chemical stability compared to the individual supported TEPA and DEA. The effects of the blend amount for TEPA and DEA, adsorption temperature and CO 2 partial pressure on CO 2 adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics were specifically discussed. Due to the auxiliary effect of DEA, the chemical reaction between non-hydroxylated TEPA and CO 2 was altered thus improving amine efficiency and the agglomeration layer between protonated TEPA molecules and carbamate, which existed due to electrostatic interaction when TEPA was loaded alone, was loosened thus improving amine efficiency and adsorption kinetics. Therefore, the maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity of MHNTs loaded with 20 wt% TEPA and 20 wt% DEA was 3.25 mmol/g at 75 °C in the flow of 40 vol% N 2 /60 vol% CO 2 . Compared with loading individual TEPA with multiple amino groups on MHNTs, individual DEA with hydroxyl groups could increase the utilization efficiency of the amino groups of TEPA and ultimately obtain excellent CO 2 capture capacity and adsorption kinetics. The experimental results show that the adsorbents obtained in this study using mixed amine impregnated silica nanotubes derived from natural minerals have a promising application in practical CO 2 capture and separation processes.

Fabricating roughened surfaces on halloysite nanotubes via alkali etching for deposition of high-efficiency Pt nanocatalysts

Qiuru Wang,Yanyan Wang,Yafei Zhao,Bing Zhang,Yunyin,Niu,Xu Xiang,Rongfeng Chen

Technological applications of heterogeneous nanocatalysts on supports have generally relied on the surface or interface properties of supports. Herein, we report a facile approach to fabricate roughened surfaces on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) through etching the wall of HNTs in a molten-salt system. SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, AFM and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis are employed to systematically investigate the morphology, structure and surface properties. The results suggest that the roughness of HNTs surface has been significantly increased and defects are formed on the tube wall without structural damage. Subsequently, the roughened halloysite nanotubes (RHNTs) are used as supports to prepare heterogeneous nanocatalyst. Pt nanoparticles with a uniform size can be homogeneously deposited onto the RHNTs surfaces via a one-step hydrothermal reduction. The as-prepared Pt@RHNTs catalyst exhibits remarkably improved activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde towards cinnamyl alcohol compared with the pristine halloysite support. Furthermore, Pt@RHNTs catalyst shows rapid catalytic rates in hydrogenation reactions and excellent leaching resistance in cycle uses.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by halloysite nanotube-supported TiO2 composite for efficient photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B

Yuhao Luo,Zhengdong Zhang,Shanhua Chen,Ao Jiang,Xingyu Chen,Xiaodong Zhu,Yuli Di

In this study, to enhance the peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-assisted photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light over TiO 2 , a novel halloysite nanotube (HNTs) supported TiO 2 composite photocatalyst was prepared by the sol-gel method. The crystal structure and bonding information of samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to characterize the morphology, optical properties and energy band structure of the samples. The composite with weight ratio of 1:5 (HNTs/TiO 2 ) (named HT-20) exhibited apparently enhanced PMS-assisted photocatalytic RhB degradation efficiency and can degrade approximately 95.31 % of RhB in 30 min, and the first-order rate constants (k) of HT-20-PMS system is about 54.5 times higher than that of B–TiO 2 . In addition, the possible mechanism of enhanced PMS-assisted photocatalytic activity of HT-20 was proposed. The improvement of photocatalytic activity in the composite photocatalyst can be ascribed to the large surface area and strong adsorption capacity of HNTs.

Development of a halloysite nanotube-based 19F NMR probe as a promising detection tool for H2O2

Gao Wenshan,Zhang Yuangong,Zheng Ying,Zhang Hailei,Wang Xiaoke,Bai Libin,Wu Yonggang,Ba Xinwu

The 19 F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been widely employed as a detection tool in biological studies due to its low biological background, noninvasiveness, high sensitivity, and real-time monitoring capability. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) treated with benzeneboronic acids (6FBB) to afford the HNT-based 19 F NMR probe which is capable to detect the H 2 O 2 in low concentration. The product was well characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The intensity of signals of 19 F was enhanced with the increasing concentration of fluorine, and the signals apparently shifted from − 62.68 to − 62.85 ppm upon the addition of H 2 O 2 . The obtained 19 F NMR probes also displayed a long spin-spin (T2) relaxation time (91.27 ms), which can strengthen image intensity. Moreover, the 19 F NMR probe exhibited non-toxic against HeLa cell. The 19 F NMR probe may serve as a desirable candidate to predict the change of H 2 O 2 in vivo.

Catalytic decomposition of toxic phosphine gas on the developed nickel ferrite nanocrystals supported by Halloysite nanotubes

Xuejiao Tang,Jingjing Xue,Cheng Xing

Nickel ferrite (NiFe 2 O 4 ) nanocatalysts with trace metal nickel (Ni 0 ) as the reaction trigger were dispersedly supported by halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) to decompose toxic phosphine (PH 3 ) into yellow phosphorus and hydrogen. The mixed spinel catalyst greatly reduced the temperature to 400 °C for 99% conversion and underwent no obvious deactivation after 2 h compared with magnetite. The as-synthesized and spent catalysts were characterized by Transmission electron microscope, X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In combination with density functional theory calculations, the PH 3 decomposition mechanism on Ni 0 @NiFe 2 O 4 /HNTs was proposed. The original plated Ni 0 triggers the reaction to form active H radicals ([ ▾ H]) contributing to the reduction of octahedral Ni(II) in NiFe 2 O 4 , and the newly generated Ni 0 determines the catalytic activity and stability. In addition, the formation of Ni 2 P is crucial to developing the stable elemental phosphorus (P) layer as the mainly active intermediate for PH 3 successive decomposition into P 4 , since P layer reduces the activation barrier of PH 3 decomposition. Particularly, the mixed crystal spinel with specific coordination (with octahedral coordinated Fe(II) and tetrahedral coordinated defects) facilitates the electron transfer among the active species to recycle the catalytic reaction. This work provides a promising approach for PH 3 air-pollution control and P recovery from the industrial off-gas.

Etching of halloysite nanotubes hollow imprinted materials as adsorbent for extracting of Zearalenone from grain samples

Huige Wang,Juan He,Lixin Song,Yunxia Zhang,Minghua Xu,Zhipeng Huang,Linbo Jin,Xin Ba,Yuanyuan Li,Liqin You,Shusheng Zhang

The halloysite nanotubes surface molecularly imprinted polymers (HNTs-SMIPs) were prepared by precipitation polymerization, using halloysite nanotubes as the carrier material, coumarin-3-carboxylic acid and pentadecanolide as dummy templates of zearalenone, methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker. Then, the HNTs-SMIPs were treated with etching technique to obtain halloysite nanotubes hollow molecularly imprinted polymers (HNTs-HMIPs). HNTs-SMIPs and HNTs-HMIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, fourier transform infrared spectrum and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption capacity of HNTs-HMIPs was compared with HNTs-SMIPs. The developed HNTs-HMIPs were applied as absorbents for solid phase extraction. A new method was established by combining with high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector for the detection of zearalenone. The method was developed with a recovery of 77.13–102.4% and a relative standard deviation of less than 5.59%. The limit of detection of oats and wheat were 1.67 μg kg −1 and 0.5 μg kg −1 , respectively. The performance of self-made solid phase extraction column was compared with immune affinity column. The developed method has been successfully applied to the detection of zearalenone in complex grain matrices.

Self-Propelled Nanojets for Fenton Catalysts Based on Halloysite with Embedded Pt and Outside-Grafted Fe3O4

Jian Wang,Jiwen Si,Jingyao Li,Peiping Zhang,Yan Wang,Wei Zhang,Bo Jin,Wenqing Li,Nan Li,Shiding Miao

Taking inspirations from nature, we endeavor to develop catalytically self-propelled nanojets from a type of tubular clay minerals, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), and utilize them as catalysts targeted for catalysis where the traditional means of mechanical agitation cannot be implemented. Nanojets of Fe3O4@HNTs/Pt were prepared by impregnating platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) in lumens of HNTs and selective grafting of magnetite (Fe3O4) particles on the external surface. The HNT-based nanojets were validated to be highly suitable both in free bulk solution and in microfluidic flow. An example of Fenton degradation catalyzed by these jets was demonstrated. The powerful movement of Fe3O4@HNTs/Pt (368 ± 50 μm·s–1) fueled by 5.0% wt. H2O2 was found to follow a bubble propulsion mechanism, and the motion exhibits collective behavior as swarms. The clay tubes were for the first time observed to self-assemble into fish-like aggregates during swimming, reflecting natural occurrence of motion-evolution philosophy. Guided motion was realized by employing magnetic manipulation which makes jets feasible for reactors with complex microchannels/reactors.

A novel membrane biofouling mitigation strategy of D-amino acid supported by polydopamine and halloysite nanotube

Xiaoyan Guo,Shougang Fan,Yandi Hu,Xiaolin Fu,Huaiqi Shao,Qixing Zhou

D-amino acid (DAA) an environmentally friendly biofilm inhibitor, has low efficiency for membrane biofouling control due to its instability. To address this challenge, a novel nanocomposite was prepared with DAA adhering to polydopamine (PDA)-coated halloysite nanotube (HNTs) through the interactions of H-bonding and π-π stacking between PDA and DAA. Membrane modified with such nanocomposite was fabricated via blending phase inversion, and the nanocomposite was uniformly distributed in the modified membrane matrix. In comparison with the pristine membrane, the addition of nanocomposites resulted in robust mechanical property for modified membrane with the ultimate stress and strain increased by 23.97% and 35.62%, respectively. Moreover, an excellent tradeoff between water flux (2.5 folds of pristine membrane) and selectivity was achieved, probably due to the improved membrane hydrophilicity. Meanwhile, bovine serum protein (BSA) static adsorption as well as dynamic filtration experiments exhibited excellent antifouling ability of the modified membrane. Most importantly, a superior anti-biofouling stability over a 10-day period was obtained for the membrane modified with nanocomposite, indicating that the activity of DAA to mitigate biofouling was effectively maintained. This study developed a novel and promising strategy for membrane biofouling mitigation.

Preparation of bioactive hydroxyapatite@halloysite and its effect on MC3T3-E1 osteogenic differentiation of chitosan film

Jingqi Zheng,Fan Wu,Hong Li,Mingxian Liu

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are widely used in biomedical field due to their special tubular structure and high reinforcing ability, while hydroxyapatite (HAP) is generally used in tissue engineering owing to its excellent biocompatibility and biological activity. In this work, [email protected] nanotubes( [email protected] ) hybrid was synthesized via a facial hydrothermal reaction process. The morphology, particle size, specific surface area, and chemical composition of the hybrid were thoroughly characterized by different techniques. Rod-like HAP nanoparticles can be anchored on the outer surface of the clay tubes, which lead to a maximum increase of 4.7 m 2 /g in the specific surface area of [email protected] over that of HNTs. HAP nanoparticles have little effect on the pores of HNTs, but diffraction peak strength of HNTs is covered by the HAP crystals. [email protected] exhibit improved cytocompatibility and possess osteogenic differentiation ability towards MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts. Chitosan/ [email protected] composite films were then prepared by doping of [email protected] into chitosan by solution mixing. [email protected] can serve as a functional phase which enhances mechanical properties of chitosan films and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. This work provides a facial synthesis routine of bioactive [email protected] , which combines the osteogenic activity of HAP and the good mechanical properties of HNTs. [email protected] can be used a novel bone regeneration biomaterial as local delivery systems with improved osteoinductive properties.

Nature-inspired polyphenol chemistry to fabricate halloysite nanotubes decorated PVDF membrane for the removal of wastewater

Xi Chen,Yi He,Yi Fan,Guangyong Zeng,Liyun Zhang

The membrane filtration technology is considered as one of the most important approach for removal of hazardous substances from wastewater. Herein, we report a facile surface modification method for preparing a novel membrane via the codepositing tannic acid (TA), polyetheylenimine (PEI), and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The morphologies and chemical compositions of membrane were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating that the membrane was successfully modified by TA/PEI/HNTs. Compared with pristine membrane, the coated membrane shows the improved hydrophilicity and pure water flux (PWF). The membrane modified by TA/PEI/HNTs achieves higher dyes rejection with 90.7%, 92.8% and 96.0% for direct yellow, direct red and direct blue, respectively. Moreover, the treated membrane exhibits excellent anti-fouling performance after several cycles. In addition, removal capacity for heavy metal ion can be enhanced by the as-prepared membrane with introducing the TA/PEI/HNTs coating. This work provides a facile strategy to carry out the hydrophilic modification of membranes. We hope the as-prepared membrane would have some practical applications for wastewater treatment.

Folate-Conjugated Halloysite Nanotubes, an Efficient Drug Carrier, Deliver Doxorubicin for Targeted Therapy of Breast Cancer

Yan-Ping Wu,Jing Yang,Hua-Ying Gao,Yan Shen,Lingxiang Jiang,Changren Zhou,Yi-Fang Li,Rong-Rong He,Mingxian Liu

To carry doxorubicin (DOX) on breast cancer site effectively, halloysite nanotubes conjugated with poly(ethylene glycol) and folate (HNTs-PEG-FA) is designed as a targeted drug delivery system. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are shortened to ∼200 nm by ultrasonic scission and functionalized with amide groups to conjugate with N-hydroxylsuccinimide-polyethylene glycol carboxylic acid (NHS-PEG-COOH) and folate (FA). DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA is prepared by loading DOX on HNTs-PEG-FA via physical adsorption. The sustained and controlled release of DOX from DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA is up to 35 h in an acidic environment (pH 5.3). DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA, performed as a new nanodelivery system, shows significant inhibition of proliferation and induction of death in MCF-7 cells with positive FA receptor but not in L02 cells with negative FA receptor. Results of acridine orange/ethidium bromide and flow cytometric assay indicate that DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA induces cell death through apoptosis. Compared to the same dose of DOX, DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA generates more reactive oxygen species (ROS) in MCF-7 cells, which lead to mitochondrial damage and apoptosis. Furthermore, with fluorescence images and transmission electron microscopy, uptake of DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA by tumor cells is both through endocytosis and direct penetration mechanism. The in vivo antibreast cancer activity of DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA is further confirmed in 4T1-bearing mice. In contrast to DOX, DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA effectively reduces heart toxicity and inhibits solid tumor growth with higher cleaved caspase-3 protein level in tumor tissue of 4T1-bearing mice. DOX@HNTs-PEG-FA reveals a higher DOX fluorescence intensity in tumor tissue than in other normal tissues including heart, spleen, lung, and kidney at different time points. All these results suggest that FA-conjugated HNTs may be designed to be a novel drug delivery system for targeted therapy of breast cancer via intravenous injection.

Simple fabrication of rough halloysite nanotubes coatings by thermal spraying for high performance tumor cells capture

Rui He,Mingxian Liu,Yan Shen,Rong Liang,Wei Liu,Changren Zhou

Here, we reported a fast, low-cost, and effective fabrication method of large-area and rough halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) coatings by thermal spraying of HNTs ethanol dispersions. A uniform HNTs coating with high transparence is achieved with tailorable surface roughness and thickness. Compared with normal cells, the tumor cells can be captured effectively with high capture yield by the HNTs coatings (expect HeLa cells), which is attributed to the enhanced topographic interactions between HNTs coating and cancer cells. HNTs coating formed from 2.5% ethanol dispersions shows the highest tumor cells capture yeild (90%), which is related to the appropriate roughness and anti-EpCAM conjugation. The capture yield of HNTs coating towards MCF-7 cells can be further improved to 93% within 2   h under dynamic shear using a peristaltic pump. The capture yield increases with the incubation time, and the flow rate with 1.25   mL/min leads to the maximum capture yield. The HNTs coatings are also effective for capture of tumor cells spiked in artificial blood samples and blood samples from patients with metastatic breast cancer. More than 90% targeted MCF-7 cells and very small amounts of white blood cells are captured by the anti-EpCAM conjugated HNTs coatings from a blood sample. HNTs are further loaded anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) and then thermally sprayed into coatings. The MCF-7 cells captured on DOX loaded HNTs coating display significant membrane rupture characteristic and only 3% cell viability after 16   h. The high capture efficiency of tumor cells by HNTs coating fabricated by the thermal spraying method makes them show promising applications in clinical circulating tumor cells capture for early diagnosis and monitoring of cancer patients. The high killing ability of the DOX loaded HNTs coating can also be designed as an implantable therapeutic device for preventing tumor metastasis.
