Synthesis of Pr doped In2O3 nanoparticles and their enhanced ethanol gas-sensing performance

Dongmin An,Yingyue Wang,Jialun Dai,Lanpeng Guo,Nan Liu

Rare earth doping was an effective method to upgrade the gas-sensing performance of sensors based on oxide semiconductors . In this paper, Pr was successfully doped into In 2 O 3 nanomaterials with a facile co-precipitation approach through a hydrothermal strategy. The as-obtained series of Pr doped In 2 O 3 nanocomposites were analyzed by some technical characterization. The gas-sensing tests were performed by using series of Pr/In 2 O 3 nanocomposites as sensitive materials. The results illustrated that the doping of Pr not only reduced the particle size of Pr/In 2 O 3 nanocomposites but also produced more active oxygen on the surface of In 2 O 3 , thus, the responses of Pr/In 2 O 3 -based sensors towards ethanol gas (112.40–50 ppm) were enhanced. A possible mechanism for the improved gas-sensing property of Pr decorated In 2 O 3 sensors was proposed.

High sensitivity and fast response sensor for formaldehyde based on In2O3/Sn2O3 heterojunction

Liangyu Zhai,Xinliang Dai,Gangqiang Zhu,Fei Rao,Siyan Wang,Jiaqi Yang,Lujun Zhu,Xianjin Shi,Yu Huang,Yanmin Jia,Siyaka Mj Zubairu

Modifying metal oxide semiconductor materials is a primary approach to enhance gas sensor performance, and heterojunction is a promising method to address cross-sensitivity issues in gas sensors. Sn 2 O 3 nanoflower-based substrates and In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 heterojunction structures were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal synthetic method. The gas-sensing performance of the In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 heterojunction-based gas sensor towards formaldehyde gas was investigated. The gas sensor based on In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 heterojunction exhibited higher sensitivity to formaldehyde gas compared to pure Sn 2 O 3 gas sensor at the same operating temperature. The response and recovery rates of the sensor were significantly improved as well. In addition, the In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 gas sensor exhibited lower response to interfering gases compared to its response to formaldehyde gas, thus demonstrating superior selectivity over the pure Sn 2 O 3 sensor. The result provides a research direction for the development of high-performance, highly selective, and rapid response formaldehyde sensors, which has certain reference significance for the advancement of gas sensor technology.

Yifu Wang,Bin Yang,Biao Gao,Longtai Li,Yu Zhou,Yaping Zhang,Tatsumi Ishihara,Limin Guo

The efficient catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol is a promising route for CO 2 emission mitigation and utilization. Recently, the Co-In based materials as one of the excellent alternative catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol have received intense attention. Herein, we developed new and efficient Co-In based catalysts (the composite of Co 3 InC 0.75 and In 2 O 3 ) by Prussian Blue analogues (PBA) pyrolysis . And a series of Co 3 InC 0.75 -In 2 O 3 composites with tunable proportion of Co 3 InC 0.75 and In 2 O 3 has been prepared. The experimental results demonstrate the Co 3 InC 0.75 -In 2 O 3 catalysts have high catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation performance into methanol, reaching a methanol yield up to 0.62 g MeOH g cat −1 h −1 at 300 °C, 5 MPa, 24000 cm 3 STP g cat −1 h −1 , and H 2 /CO 2 = 3:1, the high reaction stability and air resistance. The synergetic effects between Co 3 InC 0.75 and In 2 O 3 for the enhanced methanol production were confirmed by a series of characterizations, and a positive correlation between methanol production activity and the fraction of Co 3 InC 0.75 /In 2 O 3 was well established.

Monodispersed In2O3@ZIF-8 core–shell nanocomposite with selectivity and enhanced photocatalytic activity

Yao Yao,Liao Gangli,Cui Huina,Dong Wenbin,Zhao Zhen

A novel monodispersed In 2 O 3 @ZIF-8 core–shell nanocomposites (CSNCs) are prepared via a simple sonochemical synthesis route in this work. It is found that the encapsulation of In 2 O 3 nanoparticles into ZIF-8 shell can greatly extend the light response of CSNCs into visible light region. Benefiting from the large surface area, porous nanostructure and synergistic effect between In 2 O 3 and ZIF-8, the In 2 O 3 @ZIF-8–175 CSNC exhibits selectivity and ultra-high photocatalytic activity for organic dye acid fuchsin removal. This work not only provides a general synthesis route for fabrication of such unique and monodispersed core–shell heterostructures but also paves a new way for high performance photocatalyst for other hazardous ions selective removal in practical application.

Electrospun Ca-doped In2O3 nanotubes for ethanol detection with enhanced sensitivity and selectivity

Changhui Zhao,Huimin Gong,Gaoqiang Niu,Fei Wang

Sensitivity and selectivity of metal oxide semiconductor-based gas sensors are two crucial criteria. In this work, a highly sensitive and selective ethanol sensor has been prepared based on Ca-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes (Ca-In 2 O 3 NTs). The products were synthesized by a simple electrospinning method with subsequent annealing in air. The crystal structure and morphology of as-obtained products are obviously affected by Ca-doping levels (1–10 mol%). X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance results reveal that some Ca dopants (≤3 mol%) can enter the lattice of In 2 O 3 with the decreasing grain size, and an enrichment of the oxygen vacancies. In contrast, the grain size of Ca-In 2 O 3 NTs increases dramatically with further increase of Ca concentration (7–10 mol%), and the excessive Ca dopants tend to form a new CaIn 2 O 4 phase. Gas-sensing measurements demonstrate that the Ca-In 2 O 3 sensors exhibit enhanced ethanol sensing properties with respect to the pure In 2 O 3 sensor. Especially, the 3% Ca-In 2 O 3 sensor shows the highest response (183.3, at 100 ppm) with the excellent selectivity for ethanol detection at 240 °C. Such sensitive and selective ethanol detection is mainly based on the “doping effect” of Ca 2+ ions, suggesting an effective route to develop the ability of In 2 O 3 based gas sensors.

Fabrication of In2O3/In2S3 microsphere heterostructures for efficient and stable photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Huichang Xu,Yu Wang,Xiaoli Dong,Nan Zheng,Hongchao Ma,Xiufang Zhang

The synthesis of a novel In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 microsphere heterostructures is conducted through a well-designed two-step hydrothermal method. These composites are first applied for efficient fixation of N 2 to NH 3 under mild conditions without any organic scavengers and precious-metal cocatalysts. Here the In 2 S 3 flakes are in situ generated and uniformly assembled on In 2 O 3 microsphere. The phase structures, morphologies and oxygen vacancies of the samples are systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Raman, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and photoelectrochemistry. Meanwhile, the investigation of photocatalytic performance can confirm that the nitrogen fixation rate of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 (III) heterostructure is 40.04 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is about 4.7 and 6.0 times higher than that of pure In 2 O 3 and In 2 S 3 , respectively.

Sandwich-Structured In2S3/In2O3/In2S3 Hollow Nanofibers as Sensing Materials for Ethanol Detection

Shi Kun Wang,Ao Chen Wang,Chao Yue Zhang,Qian Yu Liu,Jun Di Cheng,Yan Chun Wang,Xiu Ping Gao,Qing Feng Xie,Zhen Xing Zhang,Geng Zhi Sun,Xiao Jun Pan,Jin Yuan Zhou

Core–shell heterojunction nanostructure-based sensors often suffer from the blocking effect from the shell layer. Here, a type of sandwich-structured hollow nanofiber of In2S3/In2O3/In2S3 (ISOS HNF) was designed via an electrospinning technique combining with postvulcanization treatments. The resultant ISOS HNF possesses double In2S3/In2O3 heterointerfaces at both sides of In2O3 tube walls, which highly enhance the junction effect on the electron transport during the gas-sensing processes. Also, the two In2S3 coatings are particle-filled and porous, which often allows the target gas to easily diffuse through them to the In2O3 core. As a result, toward 100 ppm ethanol at a work temperature of 200 °C, the ISOS HNF sensors show a high response improved by 23% and 76% compared to those of the In2S3/In2O3 core–shell NF and In2O3 HNF ones, respectively. Moreover, the ISOS HNF sensors also exhibit a fast response/recovery rate (<1 s/25 s) and a good gas selectivity property. Series analysis indicates that this highly improved response is mainly due to the double In2S3/In2O3 heterointerfaces and increased O vacancies, the accelerated response/recovery rate is due to the double-constructed heterojunction and the suitable mesopores in the coatings, and the improved gas selectivity is due to the In2S3 shell.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of In2O3/g-C3N4 composites by coupling with H2O2

Wei Liu,Jin Zhang,Qun Kang,Hongbing Chen,Ru Feng

Environmental pollution by organic pollutants poses a great threat to the ecosystem and human development. Solar-powered catalytic oxidation technology can solve the existing energy and pollution crisis. Hence, in this work, cubic nano-In 2 O 3 modified g-C 3 N 4 composite was synthesized by in situ calcination, then it was coupled with hydrogen peroxide for the degradation of antibiotic under visible light. The results of SEM and XPS showed that In 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 were closely combined. The catalytic oxidation efficiency of the antibiotic doxycycline was greatly improved when the as-prepared compound was coupled with hydrogen peroxide, and 88.2% of doxycycline was degraded within 80 min. By designing the active species inhibition test, it was found that a large number of hydroxyl radicals were generated in the system after adding hydrogen peroxide, which accelerated the degradation of the target. Hydrogen peroxide not only acts as a source of hydroxyl radical, but also as an active electron acceptor, which promotes the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs in the composite photocatalyst. Therefore, the double oxidation system formed by In 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 coupled with hydrogen peroxide can degrade the target at a higher rate. This work provided a research basis for the synthesis of In 2 O 3 with regular morphology and simplified synthesis of In 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 , and explored the practicability of the coupling method of double advanced oxidation for pollutant degradation.

MOFs-derived Co-doped In2O3 hollow hexagonal cylinder for selective detection of ethanol

Peng Yong,Sheng Wang,Xu Zhang,Haibo Pan,Shuifa Shen

Shape controlled preparation and doping are important means to improve the gas sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductor materials. In this work, pure and Co-doped In 2 O 3 porous hollow hexagonal cylinders were successfully prepared using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-68(In) as self-sacrificial template. The size of the MIL-68(In) hexagonal cylinder is uniform, and the In 2 O 3 obtained after pyrolysis better inherits the shape of the MIL-68(In), but becomes hollow, and the cylinder surfaces are porous. The product has a large specific surface area (46.52 m 2 /g), and the doping of Co significantly increases the oxygen vacancy of the material. The Co-doped sample obtained by pyrolysis at 500℃ has excellent gas sensing performances to ethanol gas, its sensitivity to 100 ppm ethanol gas at 210 ℃ is 14.6, response/recovery time is 21 s and 107 s, and the sensing selectivity to ethanol is also good.

Interface enhancement effect of hierarchical In2S3/In2O3 nanoflower heterostructures on NO2 gas sensitivity

Bing-Rong Wang,Li-Ying Liu,Gen-Cai Guo,Yue-Jie Bai,Jin-Chun Tu,Ru-Zhi Wang

Cocatalysts have been extensively employed to improve gas sensing performance in gas detection. However, the interface effect of the heterojunction on gas sensing has rarely been addressed. This study investigated the interface effect of constructive hierarchical In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 nanoflowers on NO 2 gas sensitivity using a rapid and facile microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The structure was then modulated from In 2 S 3 , to In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 heterostructures, and finally In 2 O 3 alone by increasing the calcination time. In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 heterostructures with an appropriate interface were found to significantly promote NO 2 gas sensitivity with a high gas-sensing selectivity compared with pure In 2 S 3 and In 2 O 3 . An interface enhancement model has also been developed. The strong interfacial coupling effect was key to high gas sensitivity, which likely originated from hole–electron pair separation through tuning of the interfacial electronic structure of In 2 S 3 /In 2 O 3 nanoflowers using different calcination times. This resulted in improved charge separation efficiency and carrier collection efficiency of electrons from In 2 S 3 to In 2 O 3 , and increased active sites. This boosted gas diffusion and adsorption, accelerated surface chemical reactions, and expedited charge transport and kinetic processes. This work provides a new approach for designing high-performance sensor using the interface effect of heterostructure nanomaterials.

MOF-Transformed In2O3-x@C Nanocorn Electrocatalyst for Efficient CO2 Reduction to HCOOH

Qiu Chen,Qian Kun,Yu Jun,Sun Mingzi,Cao Shoufu,Gao Jinqiang,Yu Rongxing,Fang Lingzhe,Yao Youwei,Lu Xiaoqing,Li Tao,Huang Bolong,Yang Shihe

For electrochemical CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, an ongoing challenge is to design energy efficient electrocatalysts that can deliver a high HCOOH current density ( J HCOOH ) at a low overpotential. Indium oxide is good HCOOH production catalyst but with low conductivity. In this work, we report a unique corn design of In 2 O 3- x @C nanocatalyst, wherein In 2 O 3- x nanocube as the fine grains dispersed uniformly on the carbon nanorod cob, resulting in the enhanced conductivity. Excellent performance is achieved with 84% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 11 mA cm −2 J HCOOH at a low potential of − 0.4 V versus RHE. At the current density of 100 mA cm −2 , the applied potential remained stable for more than 120 h with the FE above 90%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3- x has exposed more In 3+ sites with activated electroactivity, which facilitates the formation of HCOO* intermediate. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy also confirms In 3+ as the active site and the key intermediate of HCOO* during the process of CO 2 reduction to HCOOH.

In2O3 nanocubes modified with RuO2 for detection of TXM vapors containing benzyl group

Shendan Zhang,Yunan Wang,Fengdong Qu,Tiju Thomas,Minghui Yang

Indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) nanocubes modified by ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ) on the surface are successfully prepared through hydrothermal method , calcination and impregnation in turn. The sensing properties of RuO 2 -modified In 2 O 3 sensing material are significantly enhanced even with low loading amount. The response values of RuO 2 -modified In 2 O 3 sensing material to TXM vapor containing benzyl group (including toluene, xylene and mesitylene) increase rapidly when compared to various volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Therein the RuO 2 -modified In 2 O 3 sensor displays a 36-times increase in response value to mesitylene (100 ppm) in contrast to un-modified one at 255 °C. The optimum operating temperature (OOT) decreases obviously from 375 °C of pristine In 2 O 3 one. The gas sensing enhancement mechanism can be explained by electronic and chemical sensitization. However, the reason for selectivity change will be (temporarily) investigated further later.
