In this work, we used p-hydroxybenzoic anionic intercalated MgAl-layered double hydroxides (MgAl-(p-BzOH)-LDH) as a filler to modify waterborne polyurethane , and successfully synthesized novel WPU/MgAl-(p-BzOH)-LDH composites. CO 3 2- -type MgAl-LDH was firstly synthesized via hexamethylenetetramine hydrolysis method and then was transferred to p-BzOH-intercalated MgAl-LDH by ion exchange. The nanostructured MgAl-(p-BzOH)-LDH was then grafted by isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), forming [MgAl-(p-BzOH)-LDH] NCO complex with NCO group on the surface, which promotes its homogeneous dispersion in WPU matrix through chemical bonding. The mechanical properties and water resistance of the composites were improved upon loading the MgAl-(p-BzOH)-LDH in certain levels. Furthermore, the composites can slowly release p-hydroxybenzoic anionic into the surrounding environment, and thus exhibit significant antibacterial activity towards G( _ ) Escherichia coli and G(+) Staphylococcus aureus.

In this paper, a double hollow spherical shell composite modified with layered double hydroxide (C@Ni-Al LDH HSS) was fabricated for uranium(VI) (U(VI)) adsorption. Various batch experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of pH, concentration, time and coexistence ion on extraction. The results showed that the adsorption processes of U(VI) onto C@Ni-Al LDH HSS were spontaneous and endothermic and closely followed pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. The equilibrium time and maximum adsorption capacity of C@Ni-Al LDH HSS was 360 min and 545.9 mg g −1 . FT-IR and XPS analyses proved that the adsorption behavior was primarily attributed to the strong interaction between oxygen-containing functional groups and U(VI). Moreover, the extraction of trace U(VI) (μg L −1 ) in artificial and natural seawater was also studied. The results showed that C@Ni-Al LDH HSS provided a promising application for the efficient extraction of U(VI) from seawater.

The two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin Mg-Al layered double hydroxide modified by magnetic Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH) was successfully synthesized via the co-precipitation method. The Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH not only exhibits superior separation efficiency of charge carriers but also possesses signally enhanced photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction than Mg-Al LDH. The as-prepared Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH affords the CO and CH 4 generation rate of 442.2 µmol g −1 h −1 and 223.9 µmol g −1 h −1 . The enhanced reduction CO 2 activity mainly comes from synergetic effect of Fe 3 O 4 and ultrathin Mg-Al LDH. And Fe 3 O 4 can increase the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and ultrathin Mg-Al LDH can reduce the transmission resistance of charge carriers. Moreover, a detailed mechanism insight of Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH for CO 2 reduction is also investigated by a series of characterization methods and activity experiments. This work offers a simple and environment-friendly approach to develop recycled photocatalysts in CO 2 reduction treatment.

The low carrier mobility of BiVO4 is a bottleneck that limits its charge transfer in bulk or on the surface. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets as an effective electron mediator were successfully loaded on BiVO4 and NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) were decorated on BiVO4/rGO heterojunctions by two facile electrodeposition methods to construct a triadic photoanode of BiVO4/rGO/NiFe-LDH for improvement of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting efficiency of BiVO4. This photoanode significantly extends the absorption region of visible light, increases the photocurrent density, exhibits an onset potential with a significant cathodic shift, and enhances photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) compared with the pristine BiVO4 photoanode. The enhancement of PEC properties benefits from the formation of p–n heterojunctions between rGO and BiVO4 and the use of NiFe-LDH as a cocatalyst for accelerating the kinetics of oxygen evolution from water.

Acid drainage (AD) poses a significant concern for water pollution due to its strong acidity and the toxicity of its various contaminants (e.g., heavy metal ions). In order to minimize the harmful effects of AD, the acidity must be neutralized and the contaminants be removed. The capacity of calcined Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (Mg/Al-CLDH) for simultaneously neutralizing the pH of AD and removing various heavy metal cations and oxyanions (Cr(VI) and phosphate) was studied herein. The interactions throughout co-removal between metal cations (in short M) and oxyanions were particularly investigated. In the solution with only M, Mg/Al-CLDH was capable of neutralizing solution pH and removing M. The reconstruction of LDH from Mg/Al-CLDH produced OH – to neutralize pH and partially remove M through precipitation. FT-IR results suggested that forming H-bonds with the reconstructed LDH (R-LDH) might also contribute to M removal. In the solution containing both M and oxyanions, M and oxyanions could mutually affect their removal efficiency by Mg/Al-CLDH. M weakened the removal capacities of Cr(VI) and phosphate, because it could compete for adsorption sites on R-LDH. Cr(VI) and phosphate showed complex effects on the removal of M: Low concentrations of Cr(VI) promoted the removal of M by providing extra adsorption sites; high concentrations of Cr(VI), however, had the opposite effect, as a high concentration of Cr(VI) might largely occupy the adsorption sites on R-LDH. By contrast, phosphate inhibited the removal of M considerably, which might be ascribed to its strong buffering ability that maintained a relatively strong acidic nature of the solution. Our results, for the first time, showed that Mg/Al-CLDH is particularly suitable for the treatment of AD containing various contaminants.

The development of excellent photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is of great significance to solving the global energy crisis. In this work, a novel 3D hierarchical CdS/NiAl-LDH photocatalyst was fabricated by a facile electrostatic assembly strategy, which was composed of 1D CdS nanorods and 3D flower-like NiAl-LDH microspheres . Under the visible irradiation, the CNA-20 hierarchical photocatalyst presents the optimum hydrogen evolution rate achieved to 3.24 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is improved 6.23-fold in comparison with the pure CdS. Through the analysis of energy band structures and first-principles calculation, the type-Ⅱ charge transfer mechanism was proposed. Driven by the built-in electric field, as well as the effect of intimate interface contact of CdS and NiAl-LDH, the photogenerated charge could be achieved rapidly separate and migrate, which effectively promotes the H 2 evolution. This well-designed synergistic 1D/3D interface interaction and provides an economic approach to rationally developing metal-free photocatalysts for hydrogen production .

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets with thickness of one to several atoms serve as ideal building units for separation membranes. Assembling 2D nanosheets into layered stacks with well-defined spacing as molecular separation channels is still a huge challenge. Herein, we report the construction of ultrathin membranes with layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets, polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) alternately deposited on porous substrates based on layer-by-layer assembly. The chemical tuning of PEI leads to an accurate regulation of interlayer spacing in angstrom scale, resulting in selective nanochannels for CO 2 permeation. The laminar membranes with CO 2 transport-facilitated channels exhibit excellent gas separation performance and exceed the limit of the state-of-the-art membranes with CO 2 permeance of 1068 GPU (1 GPU = 1 × 10 -6 cm 3 (STP) cm −2 s −1 cmHg −1 ), CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 126 and 330 respectively. It is revealed the as-prepared nanofilms with strong adsorption enthalpy overcome the energy barrier of CO 2 molecules entering into and diffusing through the nanochannels. The strategy demonstrated in this work would open up new avenues for effective CO 2 separation and capture in recycling of carbon resources.

The core–shell structured CuO@NiCoMn-LDH electrode was synthesized by wet chemistry, calcination, and electrodeposition. The synergistic effect of CuO nanowires and NiCoMn-LDH nanosheets has a significant enhancement effect on electrode materials. At the same time, the Mn content plays a decisive role in regulating and optimizing the morphology and electrochemical performance of electrode materials. The optimized CuO@NiCoMn-LDH, a binder-free electrode, exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. It displays a high specific capacity of 2.66 mA h cm−2 (20.7 F cm−2, 336.71 mA h g−1) at 10 mA cm−2 and satisfactory cycling stability (under a current density of 30 mA cm−2, after 3000 cycles, the capacity retention rate is 94.82%). In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is built using the CuO@NiCoMn-LDH electrode as the positive electrode and Fe3O4@C/CuO electrode as the negative electrode to demonstrate its practical applicability in energy storage devices. At a power density of 4.79 mW cm−2, the ASC device can achieve a maximum energy density of 2.67 mW h cm−2. Two ASC devices are used as the power source of the light emitting diode (LED), which can emit light continuously for 15 minutes, showing great potential in energy storage device applications.

Due to the layered structure and recycling characteristics, magnetic MnFe 2 O 4 /ZnFe-LDH was prepared by co-precipitation. In this study, we intensively explored MnFe 2 O 4 /ZnFe-LDH for water purification compared with the ZnFe-LDH. The morphological and structural characteristics of the obtained products were systematically characterized. MnFe 2 O 4 /ZnFe-LDH exhibits the maximum adsorption capacity of 94.52 mg/g for phosphate and 49.03 mg/g for Cr (VI), respectively, which is superior to that of the ZnFe-LDH, indicating that the magnetic MnFe 2 O 4 effectively enhanced adsorption performance. Meanwhile, the mechanism of adsorption of phosphate and Cr (VI) was briefly studied, where the metal center ion in MnFe 2 O 4 /ZnFe-LDH and between layers of SO 4 2− serves as capture sites for phosphate and Cr (VI) removal. Furthermore, the MnFe 2 O 4 /ZnFe-LDH can be used for magnetic recycled and still maintained excellent removal efficiency (70%) for phosphate and Cr (VI) after five adsorption–desorption cycles. This work could open a new vista of designing magnetic novel adsorbents in environmental remediation.

Graphical Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction : A COF-5/CoAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) heterojunction photocatalyst is developed for the CO 2 reduction reaction. CoAl-LDH incorporation enhances the visible-light response-ability of the photocatalyst and improves the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs through the role of a type-II heterojunction. Photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into value-added chemical fuels is an attractive route to mitigate global warming and the energy crisis. Reasonable design of optical properties and electronic behavior of the photocatalyst are essential to improve their catalytic activity. Herein, the 1D/2D heterojunction by direct in-situ synthesis of the covalent organic framework (COF)-5 colloid on the surface of CoAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) was used as the prospective photocatalyst for CO 2 reduction. COF-5/CoAl-LDH nanocomposite achieved 265.4 μmol g −1 of CO with 94.6 % selectivity over CH 4 evolution in 5 h under visible light irradiation, which was 4.8 and 2.3 times higher than those of COF-5 colloid and CoAl-LDH, respectively. The enhanced catalytic activity was derived from the increased visible-light activity and the construction of type II-2 heterojunction, which greatly optimized visible light harvesting and accelerated the efficient separation of the photoinduced holes and electrons. This work paves the way for rational design of heterojunction catalysts in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Due to the serious energy and environmental issues, hydrogen generation via water splitting has been regarded as a green and promising alternative strategy to the use of fossil fuels. Developing highly efficient and non-noble metal based dual-functional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to generate hydrogen and oxygen has become more critical. In order to fulfill the requirements of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), herein, we report novel hierarchical Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH heterostructured nanorod arrays fabricated via a facile two-step approach. The resultant Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH displays exceptional electrocatalytic OER and HER activity with a small overpotential of 240 mV and 130 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Further, the electrocatalyst revealed excellent long-term stability during a recyclability test for 37 h. The superior performance of Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH can be attributed to the synergistic effect at the interface of the Co(OH)F nanorods and the covered CoFe-LDH nanosheets. Meanwhile, Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH as a water electrolyzer to produce a current density of 10 mA cm−2 requires a small voltage of 1.58 V. This work paves the way for the design and construction of low cost and highly efficient 3D hierarchical electrodes for practical applications in electrocatalysis.

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic CO 2 into useful carbon compounds is an ideal way to mitigate the greenhouse effect. However, this strategy is limited by poor light absorption and rapid photoexcited electron-hole recombination of traditional photocatalysts. Here, a g-C 3 N 4 (CN) foam/LDH heterojunction monolith (NCF) was fabricated by growing NiFe-LDH in situ on the porous CN foam substrate. The composite had good air permeability and light transmittance, which improves light-harvesting, CO 2 capture, and interfaces charge transfer of the NCF. The results show that the NCF catalyst has good CO 2 adsorption performance (1.52 mmol g −1 ) and enhanced CO 2 photoreduction activity (55.1 μmol g -1 h −1 ), which is ∼ 10 times higher than that of pure LDHs powder. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the NCF monolith with different thicknesses is illustrated via the CO 2 photoreduction test for the first time. This work could shed light on the development of dual-functional materials for efficient capture and photoreduction of CO 2 .
