Reshaping Li+-Polyethylene Glycol Interactions to Boost Li+ Transport in Solid Polymer Electrolytes

Guang Chen,Shun-Ran Peng,Ying Du,Wei Liu,Zhe Wang,Zong-Bin Lu,Fan Gao,Wei-Qiang Huang,Long-Hai Wang,Chun-Yan Hong,Ze Zhang,Ye-Zi You

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) play a crucial role in solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs), offering smooth interfacial contact with the electrodes. Among these, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based polymers are particularly effective at dissociating lithium salts and generating mobile Li+ ions. However, the strong binding between Li+ and PEG, coupled with slow polymer segmental motion, significantly limits the Li+ transport. Achieving rapid Li+ transport by modulating the Li+-PEG interaction is crucial but remains challenging for developing high-performance polymer electrolytes. Here, we introduce trimethylamine oxide (TMAO), a biologically derived osmotic agent, into a solid polymer electrolyte to reshape the Li+-PEG interaction for promoting Li+ transport. TMAO can effectively coordinate with Li+ through its highly negatively charged oxygen atom and reverse the PEG’s polarization induced by Li+, thereby weakening the Li+-polymer binding. This process significantly enhances the ionic conductivity (1.07 mS cm–1, 25 °C) and improves the cycling stability of lithium metal batteries with LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathodes (96% capacity retention over 300 cycles). This work provides a perspective for promoting Li+ transport in SPEs, advancing the performance of solid-state batteries.

Yu-Jiao Zhong,Zhen Liu,Xiang Zheng,Shi-Liang Luo,Ning-Yi Yuan,Jian-Ning Ding

A Li ion conductive gel-binder, Li ion-doped 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol-sulfur-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether binder, was employed on the S cathode to enhance the rate performance of the Li/S battery. The reversible capacity of such batteries is 690   mAh   g −   1 at a 3   C-rate after 27   cycles, and it reverts to 1020   mAh   g −   1 at 0.2   C-rate, which is close to the initial value of 1210   mAh   g −   1 . Besides, at 0.5   C-rate, the battery with this gel-binder shows a high initial specific capacity of 976   mAh   g −   1 and retains a capacity of 560   mAh   g −   1 for more than first 500   cycles.

High-Energy-Density Solid-Electrolyte-Based Liquid Li-S and Li-Se Batteries

Yang Jin,Kai Liu,Jialiang Lang,Xin Jiang,Zhikun Zheng,Qinghe Su,Zeya Huang,Yuanzheng Long,Chang-an Wang,Hui Wu,Yi Cui

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and Lithium-selenium (Li-Se) batteries are considered as promising candidates for next-generation battery technologies, as they have high energy density and low cost. However, due to the use of a solid Li-metal anode and a liquid organic electrolyte, the current Li-S and Li-Se batteries face several issues in terms of Coulombic efficiency and cycling stability, which seriously impeded their development. Here, we report solid-electrolyte-based liquid Li-S and Li-Se (SELL-S and SELL-Se in short) batteries. The batteries use a Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) ceramic tube as electrolyte and work at temperatures higher than the melting point of Li; thus, polysulfide or polyselenide shuttle effects and Li dendrite growth are effectively prevented, and high energy density, together with high stability, fast charge/discharge capability, high Coulombic efficiency, and high energy efficiency, can be achieved. The SELL-S and SELL-Se batteries provide broader platforms for constructing high-energy, high-power, long-lifetime, and low-cost energy storage.

A Li-Garnet composite ceramic electrolyte and its solid-state Li-S battery

Xiao Huang,Cai Liu,Yang Lu,Tongping Xiu,Jun Jin,Michael E. Badding,Zhaoyin Wen

A high strength Li-Garnet solid electrolyte composite ceramic is successfully prepared via conventional solid state method with Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 and nano MgO powders. Well sintered ceramic pellets and bars are obtained with 0–9 wt.% MgO. Fracture strength is approximately 135 MPa for composite ceramics with 5–9 wt.% MgO, which is ∼50% higher than that of pure Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (90 MPa). Lithium-ion conductivity of the composite is above 5 × 10 −4  S cm −1  at room temperature ; comparable to the pure Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 material. SEM cross-sections of the composite ceramic shows a much more uniform microstructure comparing with pure ones, owing to the grain growth inhibition effect of the MgO second phase. A battery cell consisting of Li/composite ceramics/Sulfur-Carbon at 25 °C exhibits a capacity of 685 mAh g −1  at 0.2 C at the 200 th cycle, while maintaining a coulombic efficiency of 100%. These results indicate that the composite ceramic Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 -MgO is promising for the production of electrolyte membrane and fabrication of Li-Sulfur batteries.

Sintering behavior, structure, and microwave properties of novel Li2xCu1-xMoO4 ceramics

Xinyuan Lyu,Zhengxin Li,Jingjing Jin,Yuze Xue,Chaogang Yu,Luchao Ren,Mingwei Zhang,Hongqing Zhou

In this study, we prepared a novel series of Li 2 x Cu 1- x MoO 4 ( x  = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.10) microwave ceramics. The dynamic sintering behavior, crystal phases, micro-morphologies, and dielectric properties of the samples were studied. The substitution of Li + contributed to refining the crystal grain size, promoting the densification of microstructure, and enhancing the quality factor. Due to different valence substitutions, Cu + ions were created, which were verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman experiments. In addition, the Raman shift, full width at half maximum (FWHM) value of the A 1g peak, and crystal microstrains were analyzed to gain a mechanistic understanding of the influence of structure on the dielectric properties . When x  = 0.08, the Li 2 x Cu 1- x MoO 4 ceramic sintered at 675 °C exhibited optimal comprehensive properties with ε r  = 8.17, Qf = 68 476 GHz, and τ f  = −25 ppm/°C, and good chemical stability between the ceramic and Al electrode was also achieved. These promising properties make Li 2 x Cu 1- x MoO 4 ( x  = 0.08) more suitable for ultra-low temperature co-fired ceramic (ULTCC) applications.

Monovalent Cation Exchange Membranes with Janus Charged Structure for Ion Separation

Wenguang Wang,Yanqiu Zhang,Xiaobin Yang,Haixiang Sun,Yadong Wu,Lu Shao

Monovalent cation exchange membranes (M-CEMs) have been extensively applied in environmental remediation and energy harvesting such as the extraction of Na + or Li + from brine and seawater. However, owing to the limitations of membrane structures and materials, M-CEMs have a low perm-selectivity issue. Herein, we proposed a facile approach to construct a novel M-CEM with a Janus-charged structure, consisting of a positively-charged trimesic acid/polyethylenimine surface thin layer and a negatively charged commercial cation exchange membrane (CEM). Selectrodialysis results indicated that the Janus-charged M-CEMs could effectively suppress the migration of anions, which often occurred in porous CEMs, thereby enabling the novel Janus-charged M-CEMs to possess high perm-selectivity and high total cation fluxes. Compared with state-of-the-art M-CEMs, the Janus-charged M-CEM exhibited the highest perm-selectivity of 145.77 for Na + /Mg 2+ beyond the contemporary “Upper Bound” plot as well as the excellent perm-selectivity of 14.11 for Li + /Mg 2+ , indicating its great potentials in ion separation. This study can provide novel insights into the design of Janus-charged M-CEMs for ion separation in diverse environmental and energy applications.

Regulating the lithium metal growth by Li3BO3/Li2OHCl solid-state electrolyte for long-lasting lithium metal stripping-plating

Yu Ye,Lei Gao,Zhi Deng,Kangdi Niu,Ruo Zhao,Juncao Bian,Haibin Lin,Jinlong Zhu,Yusheng Zhao

Lithium-rich anti-perovskite materials, with their high theoretical Li + conductivity and relatively low energy barrier for Li + transport, are highly promising as an electrolyte contender in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries. Their current performance is however compromised by the grain boundary to result in low Li + conductivity and high activation energy . Herein, a composite electrolyte is prepared by introducing the glassy Li 3 BO 3 into the Li 2 OHCl to serve as a bridge to connect the Li 2 OHCl grains together to lower the impact from the grain boundary. The Li  +  conductivity of Li 2 OHCl can be improved by the presence of 10 wt% Li 3 BO 3 , and its impact on the lithium metal growth behavior is also investigated. It is found that the lithium-metal battery with Li 3 BO 3 /Li 2 OHCl prefers the deposition of lithium metal particles with larger size than that in the battery with Li 2 OHCl. Consequently, the lithium-metal symmetric cell with 10 wt% Li 3 BO 3 /Li 2 OHCl is able to display excellent cycling for over 1800 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . The batteries with 10 wt% Li 3 BO 3 /Li 2 OHCl are also able to improve the cycle stability and rate performance. The results of this study provide the direct experimental proof of the effect of grain boundary in Li 2 OHCl on the battery performance.

Reactivating Dead Li by Shuttle Effect for High-Performance Anode-Free Li Metal Batteries

Jie Chen,Bin He,Zexiao Cheng,Zhixiang Rao,Danqi He,Dezhong Liu,Xiang Li,Lixia Yuan,Yunhui Huang,Zhen Li

Anode-free Li metal batteries are considered the ultimate configuration for next-generation high energy-density Li-based batteries due to the elimination of excess Li metal. However, the limited Li source aggravates issues such as dendrite growth and “dead” Li formation. Any Li loss caused by the SEI formation and dead Li has a great influence on the performance of the full cell. Here, we introduce LiI with shuttle effect to suppress the Li dendrites and reactivate the dead Li in the anode-free LiFePO4 (LFP) ∣Cu full cells. During cycling, the iodine transforms between I− and I3−, and a chemical reactions occur spontaneously between I3− and Li dendrites or dead Li. The generated Li+ in the electrolyte remains active in the following cycling. The anode-free LFP∣Cu cells deliver an initial discharge capacity of 139 mAh g−1 and maintain capacities of 100 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 72% after 100 cycles. Both the anode-free LFP∣Cu coin cells and pouch cells with LiI additive show much-improved performances. This work provides a new strategy for high-performance anode-free Li metal batteries.

Suppressing Sponge-Like Li Deposition via AlN-Modified Substrate for Stable Li Metal Anode

Yun Zhu,Fanping Meng,Nannan Sun,Liyuan Huai,Muqin Wang,Feihong Ren,Zhendong Li,Zhe Peng,Feng Huang,Hui Gu,Deyu Wang

Sponge-like lithium (Li) deposition results in high-surface-area morphology that harmfully accelerates the side reactions between Li and electrolyte, arousing serious safety issues of next high energy density Li metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, we propose a strategy to suppress the sponge-like Li deposition by plating Li metal on aluminum nitride (AlN)-modified substrates. For a practical Li deposition of 4 mAh cm–2 on a AlN-modified copper (Cu) electrode, the roughness and thickness of the as-deposited Li layer are only ∼10% and ∼50% of those for the Li layer deposited on bare Cu. Only based on the compacted Li deposition layer without any other protective remedies, the AlN-modified Cu electrode could provide a Li cycling life of 5 times longer than that on bare Cu, and an AlN-modified carbon felt was proved as an efficient interlayer to boost the cycling stability of Li||LiFePO4 batteries. These results demonstrate the high importance of suppressing the sponge-like Li deposition for high energy density LMBs.

A hierarchical host microstructure enables regulated inner Li deposition for stable Li metal electrodes

Zhendong Li,George Z. Chen,Di Hu,Xiayin Yao,Zhe Peng

Dendritic lithium (Li) deposition is a critical issue hindering the development of next-generation high-energy-density Li metal batteries (LMBs). Confining Li deposition within a three-dimensional host is a general strategy to suppress the volume expansion of the Li electrode. However, precise control of continuous Li growth in the pore space of the host is rarely investigated, which is a crucial issue to enable a high utilization ratio of the hosted Li for practical LMBs. Herein, a novel hierarchical host structure possessing a multifunctional secondary porous structure to regulate the continuous Li growth with high uniformity and reversibility is proposed. The secondary porous structure consisting of carbon nanotubes, nickel and Li2O-enriched solid electrolyte interphase is in-situ generated via lithiation reaction of a modified nickel foam scaffold, exhibiting high lithiophilicity, fast Li+ transportation and charge transfer. The LMB utilizing Li metal electrodes hosted by this rational structure achieved a stable cycling over 300 cycles with a practical LiFePO4 positive electrode (~2.5 mAh cm-2) at 0.5C/0.5C in the voltage window of 2.5-4.4 V. This work provides a novel approach to designing the host microstructure for constructing more stable Li metal electrode in practical LMBs.

A Robust Li+-Rich Protective Layer for High-Performance Dendrite-Free Li Metal Batteries

Mingli Lu,Jie Sheng,Limiao Lin,Rongfu Zhou,Wucheng Xie,Junjun Shi,Xueyi Lu,Xia Lu

Essentially, rapid Li + accumulation in the anode region triggers a strong space charge layer and significant Li + concentration gradient, which ultimately leads to Li dendrites and interface issues. Herein, a mechanically robust layer consisting of lithiated-palygorskite (Li-Pal) and thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) is employed to regulate the Li electrochemistry. The negatively charged Li-Pal surface demonstrates an exceptional lithiopholicity, which can leverage Li + supplement function to mitigate the concentration gradient. Meanwhile, the high elasticity of TPU can suppress Li dendrite growth and penetration during cycling. Enabled by such a hybrid layer, a high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.1% over 300 cycles is delivered in Li/Cu half cells, and a long cycling life over 1400 h is achieved in a symmetric cell. The corresponding LiFePO 4 full cells present a high capacity retention of 90.6% over 1000 cycles at 5 C. This interfacial engineering highlights the synergetic design of a protective layer with high mechanical stability and Li + affinity for dendrite-free Li metal batteries.

Fast Li+ Transfer Scaffold Enables Stable High-Rate All-Solid-State Li Metal Batteries

Libo Song,Yuanyue He,Zhendong Li,Zhe Peng,Xiayin Yao

Sluggish transfer kinetics caused by solid–solid contact at the lithium (Li)/solid-state electrolyte (SE) interface is an inherent drawback of all-solid-state Li metal batteries (ASSLMBs) that not only limits the cell power density but also induces uneven Li deposition as well as high levels of interfacial stress that deteriorates the internal structure and cycling stability of ASSLMBs. Herein, a fast Li+transfer scaffold is proposed to overcome the sluggish kinetics at the Li/SE interface in ASSLMBs using an α-MnO2-decorated carbon paper (CP) structure (α-MnO2@CP). At an atomic scale, the tunnel structure of α-MnO2exhibits a great ability to facilitate Li+adsorption and transportation across the inter-structure of α-MnO2@CP, leading to a high critical current density of 3.95 mA cm−2at the Li/SE interface. Meanwhile, uniform Li deposition can be guided along the skeletons of α-MnO2@CP with minimized volume expansion, significantly improving the structural stability of the Li/SE interface. Based on these advantages, the ASSLMBs using α-MnO2@CP protected the Li anode and can stably cycle up to very high charge/discharge rates of 10C/10C, paving the way for developing high-power ASSLMBs.
