Efficient removal of organic pollutants is of great significance for the sustainable development of aquatic ecosystems. Herein, an effective integrated ternary photoanode, NiFe-LDHs/Mo-doped BiVO 4 , was designed by a simple two-step electrodeposition method. The designed ternary photoanode showed a significant negative shift of onset potential compared to pristine BiVO 4 photoanode, and its photocurrent density was approximately 4.5 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 . Moreover, the photoelectrocatalytic removal ability of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) was investigated under simulated sunlight irradiation. The prepared composite achieved a degradation efficiency of 92.0% in 180 min and showed good reusability. This study provides a promising strategy for the treatment of organic pollutants wastewater with photocatalysts.

Most of the photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical cathodic protection (PECCP) technology reported at present cannot store electrons, leading to the inability to protect metals in the absence of light, which becomes the main defect that limits the practical application of PECCP . In this work, a Mo doping WO 3 /CdZnS heterojunction photoelectrode with electrons storage capability was prepared, by which the PECCP can be kept running in the absence of light. The result of theoretical calculation of density functional validates that Mo doping can introduce new doping levels into WO 3 , leading to modifications in the intrinsic electronic structure associated with increasing capacitance and conductivity. The compounding of CdZnS can not only broaden the light absorption threshold of the photoelectrode, but also charge the Mo-WO 3 . Besides, the construction of heterojunction also facilitates the oriented separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. The 0.3%Mo-WO 3 /CdZnS-2 composite photoelectrode with desirable capacity of electron storage can store the quantity of electric charge about 1.87 × 10 −3 C after 100 s illumination, which is about 1.5 times of WO 3 /CdZnS-2 without Mo doping. In the meanwhile, the persistent PECCP performance in the absence of light was also prolonged from 481 s to 584 s.

Strategies for harmonizing the construction of an active site and the building of electron transport for a hybrid MoS2 catalyst are crucial for its application in electrochemical reactions. In this work, an accurate and facile hydrothermal strategy was proposed to fabricate the active center of Co–O–Mo on a supported MoS2 catalyst by forming a CoMoSO phase on the edge of MoS2, yielding (Co–O)x-MoSy (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1, 1.5, or 2.1). The results show that the electrochemical performances (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical degradation) of the yielded MoS2-based catalysts were positively correlated with the Co–O bonds, verifying the significant role of Co–O–Mo as the active center. The fabricated (Co–O)-MoS0.9 presented an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope in both HER and OER, and it also demonstrated excellent BPA removal in the electrochemical degradation reaction. As compared with the Co–Mo–S configuration, the configuration of Co–O–Mo not only serves as the active center but also provides a conducting channel to facilitate electron conductivity with more accessible charge transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface, which is favorable for electrocatalytic reaction. This work offers a new perspective for the active mechanism of metallic-heteroatom-dopant electrocatalysts and further boosts research on the development of noble/non-noble hybrid electrocatalysts in the future.

The fabrication of ZrC–Mo composites with (10–25 vol. %) Mo content using a spark plasma sintering at 1750 °C under 35 MPa was investigated in this research. The effects of adding various Mo contents on the composites were also examined. The microstructure and phase analysis were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffractometer, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Microscopic analysis revealed that the addition of metal Mo resulted in making the ceramic particles of ZrC finer, the sintered products denser, and the sintering conditions softer. Moreover, a continuous solid solution forms in the composite as the Mo content rises, the (Zr, Mo)C and (Zr, Mo) 2 C start to generate, and thus solid solution strengthens the material. The addition of metal Mo reduced the grain size of the ceramic composite and also lead to fine-grain strengthening. With a relative density of 97.53%, a Vickers hardness of 23.88 GPa, and a flexural strength of 317.55 MPa, the composite possessed the best properties when the molybdenum volume fraction reaches 15 vol. %. The synergistic effect of fine grain strengthening and solid solution strengthening improved the mechanical behavior of the composite.

In response to diffused ionizing radiation damage throughout the body caused by nuclear leaks and inaccurate radiotherapy, radioprotectants with considerable free radical scavenging capacities, along with negligible adverse effects, are highly regarded. Herein, unlike being performed as toxic chemotherapeutic drug candidates, molybdenum-based polyoxometalate nanoclusters (Mo-POM NCs) were developed as a non-toxic potent radioprotectant with impressive free radical scavenging capacities for ionizing radiation protection. In comparison to the clinically used radioprotectant drug amifostine (AM), the as-prepared Mo-POM NCs exhibited effective shielding capacity by virtue of their antioxidant properties resulting from a valence shift of molybdenum ions, alleviating not only ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage but also disruption of the radiation-sensitive hematopoietic system. More encouragingly, without trouble with long-term retention in the body, ultra-small sized Mo-POM NCs prepared by the mimetic Folin–Ciocalteu assay can be removed from the body through the renal-urinary pathway and the hepato-enteral excretory system after completing the mission of radiation protection. This work broadened the biological applications of metal-based POM chemotherapeutic drugs to act as a neozoic radioprotectant.

In this work, nanorod bundles of Ni-Mo-O were synthesized within nickel foam (NF) using a conventional hydrothermal method, which was the further vulcanized to form Ni-Mo-S upon doping sulfur. The NF/Ni-Mo-O and NF/Ni-Mo-S materials were characterized in terms of their morphology, composition and electrochemical properties. NF/Ni-Mo-O showed excellent performance as a supercapacitor. In addition, NF/Ni-Mo-S catalyzed the electrochemical oxidation of glucose in alkaline medium, exhibiting its potential application as a new fuel cell. Their excellent electrochemical performances greatly benefited from the preferred activity of NF/Ni-Mo-O and NF/Ni-Mo-S, efficient electron transfer over the electrode and high conductivity of NF.

Photoelectrocatalytic methanol oxidation to formaldehyde by using electric/solar energy is a promising technology. In this work, Ag nanoparticles were decorated on Mo-doped BiVO4 to synthesize Ag/Mo: BiVO4 catalyst. As expected, benefitting from Mo-dopant and plasmonic effect of Ag nanoparticles, formaldehyde production of Ag/Mo: BiVO4 photoanode was 2.2 times higher than pristine BiVO4 photoanode. Faradaic efficiency increased from 19% to 49% in comparison with the pure BiVO4 photoanode.

Mo dispersion is the key factor promoting the performance of an Mo/ZSM-5 catalyst for the methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) reaction. Citric acid (CA) was introduced during the conventional wetness impregnation step to ameliorate the Mo dispersion over the Mo/ZSM-5 catalyst. After introducing CA, all catalysts bear high crystallinity relative to that of ZSM-5 zeolite, which proves that CA treatment does not damage the physical structure of catalysts. CA introduction also enhances the Mo dispersion significantly. The metal particle size of 3Mo/ZSM-5-CA1.5 (sample with an Mo loading of 3 wt% and nCA : nMo ratio of 1.5) is within 5–15 nm and is lower than that of pristine 3Mo/ZSM-5 (within 10–20 nm). The role of CA in improving Mo dispersion can be further certified by the higher band gap energy of molybdenum atoms, the higher proportion of surface oxygen in molybdenum oxide and the fewer Brønsted acid sites for the catalysts prepared with the aid of CA. High Mo dispersion contributes to the high activity and selectivity of the catalysts. The aromatic yield of 3Mo/ZSM-5-CA1.5 is almost twice that of pristine 3Mo/ZSM-5. The improvement of Mo dispersion is attributed to the chelation between CA and Mo species, leading to the subsequent isolation of the active components during calcination. Moreover, this effect is more distinct for the catalysts with higher Mo loading. When Mo loading increases to 9 wt%, the aromatic selectivity of 9Mo/ZSM-5-CA1.5 is more than 93% and the coke resistance is obviously elevated compared to that of a catalyst prepared without CA. Based on the above findings, it is clear that adding CA during the Mo/ZSM-5 preparation is an effective way to improve Mo dispersion.

It is well known that the metal atoms of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) exhibit significant activity in gas sensing. However, limited by the shielding effect of the outer oxygen atom layer, layered MoO 3 is often difficult to show ideal gas adsorption activity. Hence, the MoO 3 microporous nanoflowers (MPNFs) assembled by porous two-dimensional nanosheets were successfully synthesized and exhibited excellent gas sensing performance to H 2 S, and the response was 7.2 times higher than that of simple MoO 3 nanosheets. The abundant pores of MoO 3 MPNFs were due to the influence of the crystal cell shrinkage effect on the atomic arrangement, while the significantly enhanced gas sensing performance was attributed to the positive effect of the microporous structure on gas diffusion and the exposed edge Mo atoms. This was confirmed by DFT calculation results that, compared to the Mo atoms on the surface of MoO 3 nanosheets, the Mo atoms around the pores were exposed because they broke through the shielding effect of the oxygen atom layer and exhibited higher adsorption activity for H 2 S and O 2 molecules. Therefore, this work can shed a light on the design of high-performance gas sensors based on metal oxides .

Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) refractory metals , represented by tungsten and molybdenum alloy , possesses many excellent properties such as high-temperature strength , outstanding thermal microstructure stability and good resistances to oxidation and corrosion. However, in traditional preparation technologies, these ex-situ oxides usually form poor oxide/matrix interface relationships and keep coarse sizes at grain boundaries (GBs), which prominently limit the improvement of alloy mechanical properties until now. In this work, we skillfully employed novel phase interface engineering to successfully construct completely coherent oxide/matrix interfaces in ODS Mo alloys through the newly formed ternary phase oxide nanoparticles or diffusion layers. Furthermore, these ODS Mo alloys are characterized by ultrafine grains, ultrafine subgrains, small and dispersed intragranular and intergranular particles. An amount of oxygen impurities can also be depleted via phase interface engineering, thus purifying Mo matrix. The phase interface engineering endows ODS Mo alloys with ultrahigh strength, excellent ductility and excellent hot machinability , which illuminates a new research direction for those ex-situ oxide dispersion strengthened alloys with excellent mechanical properties.

UO 2 –Mo composites are expected to be candidate materials for use as enhanced thermal fuel in the next generation of high-level safety reactors. Nevertheless, the UO 2 matrix tends to create micro-cracks caused by thermal stress generated during the sintering process. A novel type of UO 2 –Mo-SiC w composite is fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) to enhance the thermal-mechanical properties of UO 2 . In the composite, SiC w is dispersed uniformly in the UO 2 matrix to form microspheres , and Mo is distributed in a three-dimensional network to form heat-conduction channels. Micro-cracks in the UO 2 matrix are significantly suppressed in the UO 2 –Mo composite, since only a small amount of SiC w is incorporated into the UO 2 . Indentation testing indicates a great capability of the SiC w to sharply enhance the crack propagation resistance of the UO 2 matrix. The estimated indentation fracture toughness reaches 0.91 MPa m 1/2 with the incorporation of 0.5 vol% SiC w , representing a 68.5% improvement over the value of 0.54 MPa m 1/2 obtained for the UO 2 –Mo composite. The thermal conductivity of the UO 2 –4Mo composite at 1000 °C was enhanced by approximately 54.3%, 60.1% and 67.2% for a SiC w content of 0.5, 2, and 4 vol%, respectively, compared with pure UO 2 . These results provide new insight for further improving the safety and lifespan of UO 2 fuel in reactors.

Bismuth vanadate photoanode has shown great potential for photoelectrochemical (PEC) catalysis, but it needs to be further modified because of its relatively low charge-separation efficiency and poor stability. Herein, the bimetallic phosphide NiCoP decorated Mo–BiVO4 is fabricated through the electrodeposition and drop-casting method, which significantly improves the charge separation and surface oxidation reaction. Therefore, the fabricated NiCoP/Mo–BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a low onset potential of 0.21 V (vs. RHE) and high photocurrent of 3.21 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which is 3.12 times higher than that of pure BiVO4. Importantly, the decoration of NiCoP significantly improve the stability of BiVO4 photoanode.
