Novel flexible MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composites with excellent electrochemical performance for lithium ion battery anodes

Jipeng Guan,Liping Zhao,Chenyang Xing,Yongjin Li

In this work, a novel flexible MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composite for lithium ion battery anodes was fabricated by the electrospinning of homogeneously dispersed MWCNTs in a PVA/ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate solution and subsequent thermal treatment of the electrospun nanofibers. In the resulting MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composite, the MoO2 nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed in amorphous carbon nanofibers that contained well-embedded MWCNTs as their cores. Compared with samples without MWCNTs, the unique nanocable composite exhibited not only a high specific capacity but also excellent cycling performance and good flexibility. It delivered a high reversible capacity of 832 mAh g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1 after 30 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the MWCNTs@MoO2-C nanocable composite was attributed to its novel nanocable structure ensuring not only effective contact between MoO2 and the liquid electrolyte, but also high conductivity for Li+ and e– transfer.

An Enzyme Assisted Electrochemical Detection System of Purine Intracellular Utilizing MWCNTs-IL Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

Ji-Wen Cui,Tie-Jun Hou,Qian Wang,Guang-Gang Gao,Sheng Bi,Kui-Chen Zhou,Jin-Lian Li,Dong-Mei Wu

Monitoring purines intracellular quickly and accurately is critically important for revealing physiological processes relate to purine metabolism. However, the overlapped signals of guanine (G) or xanthine (X) and adenine (A) or hypoxanthine (H) hinder the accurate detection of individual purine change in cells. In this paper, a novel electrochemical detecting system has been constructed by introducing xanthine oxidase, which can catalyze H or X to uric acid during the detection process. Using this enzyme-assisted electrochemical detecting system, the individual concentrations of G, X, A and H in the Human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells can be detected simultaneously without any pretreatment. As a result, more information about the purine metabolism in cells can be provided. The cytotoxicity of cyclophosphamide on MCF-7 cell activity was also evaluated by this system, and the results are consistent with that of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, which paves a new way to the accurate detection of purines intracellular with the assistance of xanthine oxidase.

Immobilization of superoxide dismutase on Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid modified electrode surface for superoxide anion detection

Xiang Zhu,Xiangheng Niu,Hongli Zhao,Jie Tang,Minbo Lan

Monitoring of reactive oxygen species like superoxide anion (O 2 ∙− ) turns to be of increasing significance considering their potential damages to organism. In the present work, we fabricated a novel O 2 ∙− electrochemical sensor through immobilizing superoxide dismutase (SOD) onto a Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid modified electrode surface . The Pt–Pd/MWCNTs hybrid was synthesized via a facile one-step alcohol-reduction process, and well characterized by transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The immobilization of SOD was accomplished using a simple drop-casting method, and the performance of the assembled enzyme-based sensor for O 2 ∙− detection was systematically investigated by several electrochemcial techniques. Thanks to the specific biocatalysis of SOD towards O 2 ∙− and the Pt–Pd/MWCNTs – promoted fast electron transfer at the fabricated interface, the developed biosensor exhibits a fast, selective and linear amperometric response upon O 2 ∙− in the concentration scope of 40–1550   μM ( R 2 =0.9941), with a sensitivity of 0.601   mA   cm −2   mM −1 and a detection limit of 0.71   μM ( S / N =3). In addition, the favorable biocompatibility of this electrode interface endows the prepared biosensor with excellent long-term stability (a sensitivity loss of only 3% over a period of 30 days). It is promising that the proposed sensor will be utilized as an effective tool to quantitatively monitor the dynamic changes of O 2 ∙− in biological systems.

Designing novel 0D/1D/2D architectural CoOx/MWCNTs/rGO hierarchically porous nanocomposite for high-performance supercapacitors

Gaosheng Nie,Xiongfei Sun,Liyin Xu,Ke Wu,Zilong Wei,Shuwu Liu

MOF-derived cobalt oxides (CoO x ) have attracted extensive attentions due to their excellent theoretical specific capacitances, permanent porosity and controllable structures. However, the inherent poor conductivity of single-component cobalt oxide, and the structural collapse, pore loss and agglomeration during pyrolysis process are still the main factors to limit the performance of CoO x . Structure design of 3D hierarchical porous heterostructure composites through 0D/1D/2D materials is an effective strategy for boosting the capacitive performance of CoO x . Herein, the rationally designed 3D hierarchically porous CoO x /MWCNTs/rGO ternary hybrid composite was constructed through high-temperature pyrolysis of a facile self-assembled 0D/1D/2D Co-MOF/MWCNTs/GO precursor. Indeed, The CoO x /MWCNTs/rGO electrode exhibited an excellent specific capacitance of 520 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , outstanding rate capability of 80.77 % capacitance retention even at 20 A g −1 , and ideal durability with about 8.4 % capacitance decay after 10000 cycles. Moreover, the CoO x /MWCNTs/rGO exhibited a maximum energy density of 14.6 Wh kg −1 with a power density of 41.2 W kg −1 .

Ultrahigh permittivity of polymer nanocomposites based on surface-modified amorphous carbon/MWCNTs shell/core structured nanohybrids

Qingzhong Xue,Qikai Guo,Baoshou Tao,Zhide Han,Jianqiang Zhang,Xinglong Pan

The key matter to achieve excellent dielectric properties is not only improving the interfacial bonding between nanocarbon materials and polymer matrix but also preventing the direct contact of adjacent nanocarbon materials. Unfortunately, few works have provided a feasible route to address these problems simultaneously. In this work, surface-modified amorphous carbon/MWCNTs shell/core structured nanohybrids (s-AC@MWCNTs) are prepared using a facile and environmentally friendly approach. On one hand, the amorphous carbon shell can isolate MWCNTs from direct contact. On the other hand, the surface modification of amorphous carbon shell obviously improves the interfacial bonding between s-AC@MWCNTs and poly (vinylidene fluride) (PVDF) matrix. As a result, the s-AC@MWCNTs can be monodispersed into the PVDF matrix to form numerous microcapacitors and thus enhance the dielectric performance of PVDF by ∼4 orders of magnitude. The largest dielectric constant of s-AC@MWCNTs/PVDF composites can reach 43800 while maintaining a suppressed dielectric loss below1.8.

Establishment of 3D hollow tubular/spherical Fe3O4/MWCNTs/solid waste composites for enhanced electromagnetic absorbing property

Wenhan Wang,Yongpeng Wang,Mengzhu Liu,Naidi Tan

Nowadays, high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) materials with simple preparation techniques are desirable for practical applications. However, there are many obstacles need to be overcome. In this work, a novel 3D hollow tubular/spherical structure system has been established by using Fe 3 O 4 as a magnetic loss component, MWCNTs as a dielectric loss component, fly ash cenospheres (FACs) as a structural skeleton through simple self-assembly to achieve excellent EWA properties. Particularly, FACs which derive from power plant solid waste are hollow and insulating that help to regulate the electromagnetic parameters, the conductivity, and the impedance matching characteristics of the composites, as well as reduce the cost. The effect of the unique heterogeneous structure with multiple interfaces on the EWA performance is investigated. The superior absorption performance is primarily due to the synergistic effect of component design and the unique tubular/spherical structure, which provide efficient interfacial polarization loss, dipole polarization loss, moderate conductive loss, good impedance matching, and a large transmission route. The effective absorption bandwidth is as wide as 3.8 GHz at a thickness of 2.0 mm, and the RL min value is −47.35 dB at a thickness of 3.0 mm. The prepared Fe 3 O 4 /MWCNTs/FAC composites have excellent EWA properties that are superior to the majority of recently reported comparable composites. The product meets the requirements of high absorption performance, simple preparation, stable structure, low cost and environmental friendly, which greatly improves its applicability.

Highly sensitive determination of acyclovir using Ti3C2-CS-MWCNTs-COOH/GCE composite as a sensing platform

Nana Tang,Aiting Chen,Yanping Wei,Shuting Shi,Chuanqin Zhou,Quanguo He,Jun Liu

Acyclovir (Acyclovir, ACV) is an antiviral drug which, despite its favorable safety profile, can have systemic adverse effects, following improper use. This study prepared a clay-like two-dimensional transition metal carbide Ti 3 C 2 by etching Ti 3 AlC 2 with LiF and HCl. Carboxylated multi walled carbon nanotubes (Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes , MWCNTs-COOH) were combined with Ti 3 C 2 using chitosan (Chitosan, CS) as solvent and ultrasonic treatment . The nanocomposite was then modified onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (Glassy carbon electrode, GCE) to develop an electrochemical sensor for the detection of ACV. The Ti 3 C 2 -CS-MWCNTs-COOH/GCE nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffractometry (X-ray diffractometry, XRD), scanning electron microscope (Scanning electron microscope,SEM), and cyclic voltammetry (Cyclic voltammetry,CV), as well as the electrochemical impedance method (Electrochemical impedance,EIS). The successful preparation of Ti 3 C 2 -CS-MWCNTs-COOH, and the good electrochemical performance of the electrode were verified. Linear scanning voltammetry (Linear scan voltammetry,LSV) was used to quantify the ACV. The linear range of the method is wider than other works (0.05 ∼ 20.0 and 20.0 ∼ 500.0 μM), with a low detection limit (0.088 μM). The sensor achieves sensitive detection of ACV and can be used for the analysis of ACV in pharmaceutical and urine dosage forms , with recoveries of 95.5∼97.6% and 95.6∼97.5%, respectively. For the first time, this sensor utilizes clay-like Ti 3 C 2 with a larger specific surface area in combination with MWCNTs-COOH for ACV detection, which exhibits excellent immunity to interference, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. This method provides a rapid and sensitive method for the determination of ACV, and lays foundations for developing miniaturized field rapid test detectors.

Investigating the quantum size effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in photocatalytic fermentative biohydrogen production

Hina Ramzan,Faiqa Nadeem,Muhammad Usman,Muhammad Shahzaib,Muneeb Ur Rahman,Fuhua Shen,Zhiping Zhang,Reeta Rani Singhania,Farzana Jabeen,Waheed Afzal,Nadeem Tahir

Nanocatalysts' quantum size impacts their catalytic activity, hence surface area in nanomaterials plays a key role in controlling the charge transferring. Since multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) possess a large surface area as compared to bulk activated carbon (AC), thus their role in photo fermentative biohydrogen production (PFHP) from corn stover has been investigated. The physio-optical characteristics of the studied MWCNTs, and AC were characterized through the Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The experimental finding revealed that MWCNTs has a larger specific surface area (SSA) of 227.69 m 2 /g than activated carbon (AC) (126.26 m 2 /g). SEM and Raman results confirmed that MWCNTs have smaller sizes and more defects due to surface dangling bonds. The incorporation of MWCNTs in a photo fermentative medium showed a pronounced effect on hydrogen production. The optimal concentration of 20 mg/L MWCNTs increased the hydrogen production rate to 132.96 mL/h, 46.66% and 17.85% greater than the control group (CG) and AC, respectively, and reduced the lag period by 12 h. At 20 mg/L loading concentration, total hydrogen production was 293.84 mL, 2-fold and 16.24% greater than CG. The 44.85%, 100.39%, and 126.49% increase in byproducts, energy conversion efficiency (ECE), and light conversion efficiency (LCE), respectively compared to CG indicated an increase in metabolic processes, which increased total hydrogen production, suggesting that catalyst surface area is the key parameter affecting fermentative biohydrogen production catalytic efficiency.

Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensor Based on MWCNTs/GQDs for the Detection of Sulfamethazine in Aquaculture Seawater

Jianlei Chen,Tianruo Zhang,Yong Xu,Hao Li,Hongwu Cui,Xinguo Zhao,Yun Zhou,Keming Qu,Zhengguo Cui

In this work, a novel molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was proposed based on molecular imprinting technology for the detection of sulfamethazine. A glassy carbon electrode was modified with a composite material of carbon nanotubes and graphene quantum dots to effectively improve sensitivity. The molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was then prepared by electropolymerization using sulfamethazine as the template and o-phenylenediamine as the functional monomer on the modified electrode. Under optimal measurement conditions, electrochemical tests of different sulfamethazine concentrations (0.5 μM–200 μM) showed excellent linearity and a detection limit of 0.068 μM. In addition, the sensor demonstrated satisfactory selectivity, stability, and reusability. Furthermore, the sensor was applied to the spiked analysis of sulfamethazine in grouper aquaculture water, achieving recovery rates between 95.4% and 104.8%, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 4.14%. These results indicated that the developed method was effective for the analysis of sulfamethazine in aquaculture seawater, providing a new approach for the detection of antibiotic residues in seawater samples.

Electrochemically ultrasensitive detection of ampicillin using enzyme-mediated metallo-β-lactamase/CS/Bi2WO6/MWCNTs-COOH biosensor

Nana Tang,Shuting Shi,Chuanqin Zhou,Jianhua Ding,Aiting Chen,Quanguo He,Wu Wang

The misuse of the antibiotic ampicillin (AMP) has led to the presence of antibiotic residues in related products, which enter the human body through the ecological or food chain to produce a variety of toxic side effects. There is an urgent need to develop enzyme-based assays with higher specificity to determine antibiotic residues in food. Hereby, bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) was synthesized using a simple hydrothermal and calcination process. Carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) were mixed with Bi 2 WO 6 by ultrasonication to form composite as modifier on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. Meanwhile, metal β-lactamases (MBLs) were mixed with chitosan to be immobilized on it to obtain the MBLs/CS/Bi 2 WO 6 /MWCNTs-COOH/GCE. Under the optimal conditions, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used for the quantitative detection of AMP. The experimental results showed that the peak currents were linearly correlated with the concentrations of AMP (0.0007–0.05 μM) and (0.1–10 µM) (R 2  = 0.9965 and 0.9956), and the detection limit was 0.17 nM (S/N = 3). The method has good repeatability, reproducibility, stability and immunity to interference, and can be applied to the highly sensitive detection of AMP in real samples with recoveries of 92.4–96.8 % and 94.3–103.0 %.

Anchoring Fe–Cu bimetallic oxides on MWCNTs for low-temperature H2S removal under high CO2 concentration

Shuai Liu,Dicka Ar Rahim,Yan Zhang,Dan Wang,Ekkachai Kanchanatip,Yi He,Mi Yan

To advance the utilization of high-concentration CO2 produced in biogas upgrading, it is essential to remove associated hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This study presents a series of bimetallic Fe–Cu oxides supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which were synthesized to efficiently remove H2S from CO2-rich gas at low temperatures. The synergy of the bimetallic elements not only forms a multifaceted active phase but also causes new defects on the MWCNTs, creating more H2S/CO2 separation sites. The adsorption experiments demonstrate that the deep H2S removal performance of the adsorbent is unaffected by the CO2 concentration, achieving a maximum adsorption capacity of 30.11 mg g−1, which exceeds that of commercial desulfurizers and previously reported adsorbents. Additionally, density functional theory calculations were employed to elucidate that the introduction of Cu species increases the gap in the average adsorption energies between H2S and CO2. The adsorbent also exhibited stability after 4-cycle regeneration at room temperature, maintaining 62.6% of its initial H2S capacity. This work underscores the potential of Fe–Cu oxide/MWCNTs adsorbents as a viable, regenerable solution for H2S removal in CO2 purification, offering implications for carbon-negative construction.

Selective transmembrane transport of iodide based on electrochemically induced iodide-trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane

Jingjing Zhao,Zhong Liu,Zhiyong Ji,Xiaowei An,Xiao Du,Fengfeng Gao,Xiaogang Hao,Jun Li

An electrochemically induced bismuth iodine oxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polyvinyl alcohol (BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA) composite membrane electrode with iodide ion trap (I − -trap) was fabricated by prerelease of I − under reduction potential. The I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane with unique lattice confinement structures was used for the selective extraction of I − in an electrochemically switched ion permselective (ESIP) process. In the ESIP system, the direct uptake and release of I − were realized by applying a cell voltage-pulse potential (CV-PP) coupling circuit on the membranes to switch the oxidation/reduction state. The I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane exhibited a maximum flux of 8.32 mg·m −2 ·min −1 and superior electrochemical stability. The separation factors of I − /Br − , I − /Cl − , I − /NO 3 − , and I − /SO 4 2− in the mixed solutions were 2.67, 3.71, 3.82, and 6.70 respectively. Therefore, such a novel I − -trap BiOI/MWCNTs/PVA composite membrane could be used in the ESIP system for the selective extraction of I − ions from low concentration solutions.
