Exploring a facile method to recover Li + is crucial for liquid-liquid extraction from high Mg/Li ratio brine for energy conversion and storage. A simple and effective approach herein that involves the lithium recovery from high Mg/Li ratio brine at a controlled temperature is proposed. Liquid-liquid extraction of Li + from high Mg/Li ratio brine was carried out using tributyl phosphate (TBP) diluted in temperature-responsive ionic liquid as the extraction organic phase. The introduction of this ionic liquid allows for the solid-liquid conversion of the extraction phase by adjusting the temperature, and then achieves effective phase separation after liquid-liquid extraction. The parameters such as pH value, the dosage of IL, and phase ratio were optimized by experiments to achieve more than 80% of lithium recovery from a high Mg/Li ratio solution. The loaded organic phase was regenerated by HCl stripping, and the stripped organic phase can be recovered with no crud or emulsification during the process. In this work, a novel and green method was developed for lithium selectivity recovery by using a switchable temperature-responsive TBP-IL system.

In the present study, MXene-reinforced Mg matrix composites were manufactured via the electrostatic self-assembly protocol and spark plasma sintering (SPS) process to develop lightweight materials with high mechanical performance. Uniform dispersion of MXene sheets was achieved in MXene/AZ91 composites. A unique interfacial structure was confirmed in these composites, which exhibited an ultrafine MgO interlayer (grain size of ∼10 nm) coherently incorporated or intercalated into MXene layers. The unique interfacial structure contributed to robust interfacial bonding between MXene sheets and Mg matrix, resulting in a substantial mechanical performance enhancement. The yield strength of 325.3 ± 7.9 MPa and elongation of 8.8 ± 0.2% were achieved in 0.3vol% MXene/AZ91 composites, showing a significantly high strengthening efficiency of 159.1 without sacrificing ductility. Quantitatively investigation of strengthening behavior manifested that the load-transfer effect was the primary strengthening mechanism in MXene/AZ91 composites, and the simulated strength was well-matched with experimental results due to the special interfacial structure and excellent dispersion properties. This study could offer significant guidance for developing novel lightweight materials with high mechanical performance for structural applications.

Experiments on the flame propagation of starch dust explosion with the participation of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 in a vertical duct were conducted to reveal the inerting evolution of explosion processes. Combining the dynamic behaviors of flame propagation, the formation law of gaseous combustion products , and the heat dissipation features of solid inert particles, the inerting mechanism of explosion flame propagation is discussed. Results indicate that the ultrafine of Mg(OH) 2 powders can cause the agglomeration of suspended dust clouds, which makes the flame combustion reaction zone fragmented and forms multiple small flame regions. The flame reaction zone presents non-homogeneous insufficient combustion, which leads to the obstruction of the explosion flame propagation process and the obvious pulsation propagation phenomenon. As the proportion of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 increases, flame speed, flame luminescence intensity, flame temperature and deflagration pressure all show different degrees of inerting behavior. The addition of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 not only causes partial inerting on the explosion flame, but also the heat dissipation of solid inert particles affects the acceleration of its propagation. The explosion flame propagation is inhibited by the synergistic effect of inert gas-solid phase, which attenuates the risk of starch explosion. The gas-solid synergistic inerting mechanism of starch explosion flame propagation by ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 is further revealed.

Flue gas torrefaction (FGT) is a feasible way to improve fuel properties and enhance gasification performance. Torrefaction inevitably causes CO 2 emissions. In this study, FGT integrated with gasification based on the circulation of Mg-additive (MgO-FGT-GS) was developed to capture CO 2 released during FGT and transferred it to gasification to achieve a higher effective carbon conversion efficiency (ECC). Firstly, FGT with Mg-additive (MgO-FGT) was conducted on distilled spirits lees (DSL) and the effect of different Mg-additive (MgO) ratios was explored. Based on the characterizations of DSL and Mg-additive before and after MgO-FGT, the mechanism of MgO-FGT was revealed, and the looping property of Mg-additive was investigated. A fixed-bed gasification experiment was finally performed to validate the MgO-FGT-GS process. The results show that the optimal MgO-FGT was obtained as the MgO: DSL ratio was 1:1. Under this condition, the torrefied DSL had the highest HHV of 16.20 MJ/kg and the lowest O/C ratio. In MgO-FGT, the MgO absorbed 15.75 % of CO 2 and changed into basic magnesium carbonate. Then in gasification, CO 2 was released by Mg-additive at 800 ℃, and the Mg-additive largely returned to MgO. The LHV of syngas of the MgO-FGT-GS was 9.22 MJ/Nm 3 , which was 1.3 times higher than raw DSL. Meanwhile, the tar yield decreased by 68.99 %, and the ECC increased by 1.5 times. Therefore, the MgO-FGT-GS process shows a great improvement in gasification and better utilization of CO 2 . This study provides a technological breakthrough for the full-component utilization and low-carbon conversion of biomass.

The partially and equivalent substitution of La + Mg → Sr + Al in SrAl 12 O 19 lattice is an effective strategy to provide trivalent sites, reduce the site occupation splitting of Al and stabilize the entire lattice. When excited by 397 nm, the Eu 3+ activated La, Mg:SrAl 12 O 19 (ASL) phosphor shows intense linear emission through the 5 D 0 → 7 F 4 transition at 707 nm when compared with SrAl 12 O 19 :Eu 3+ . Especially, the Eu, Mg co-doped Sr 1-x La x Mg x Al 12-x O 19 with certain amount of x = 1/3 exhibits the significant intense photoluminescence, which was demonstrated through a lattice evolutional model. Eu 2+ in the host with 1/3 ratio of (La, Mg) substitution shows broad blue emission and as short fluorescence lifetime as 248 ns. The temperature-depended fluorescence quenching behavior confirms the essence of strong electric-phonon coupling originated from distorted and polarized crystal field around Eu 2+ /Sr 2+ site. Basing on site regulation of SrAl 12 O 19 matrix, our study provides a reference for exploration on efficient rare earth ions activated luminescent laser or scintillation materials.

With a light absorption up to 740 nm, BaNbO 2 N is promising for solar water splitting but normally owns a low activity due to a high defect concentration. Here, Mg is adopted as a dopant to modify the BaNbO 2 N. The presence of Mg not only reduces the defect concentration and enhances surface hydrophilicity but also tunes the bandgap as well as the band edge positions. These modifications greatly promote the charge separation and transfer of BaNbO 2 N, boosting the photocatalytic activities for O 2 -evolution reactions. An apparent quantum efficiency of 1.65 % at 420 ± 20 nm has been attained for Mg modified BaNbO 2 N. Overall water splitting at a stable gas-evolution rate (∼ 2.0 μmol·h −1 for H 2 and ∼ 1.0 μmol·h −1 for O 2 ) has been realized by integrating Mg-modified BaNbO 2 N into a Z-scheme system. These findings justify Mg as an effective dopant to modulate the photocatalytic behavior of Nb-based perovskite oxynitrides.

Rechargeable aqueous magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) show great promise for low-cost, high-safety, and high-performance energy storage applications. Although manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) is considered as a potential electrode material for aqueous MIBs, the low electrical conductivity and unsatisfactory cycling performance greatly hinder the practical application of MnO 2 electrode. To overcome these problems, herein, a novel Mg-intercalation engineering approach for MnO 2 electrode to be used in aqueous MIBs is presented, wherein the structural regulation and electrochemical performance of the Mg-intercalation MnO 2 (denoted as MMO) electrode were thoroughly investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ Raman investigation. The results demonstrate that the Mg intercalation is essential to adjusting the charge/ion state and electronic band gap of MMO electrode, as well as the highly reversible phase transition of the MMO electrode during the charging-discharging process. Because of these remarkable characteristics, the MMO electrode can be capable of delivering a significant specific capacity of ∼419.8 mAh·g −1 , while exhibiting a good cycling capability over 1000 cycles in 1 M aqueous MgCl 2 electrolyte. On the basis of such MMO electrode, we have successfully developed a soft-packaging aqueous MIB with excellent electrochemical properties, revealing its huge application potential as the efficient energy storage devices.

The Cd(II) adsorption of kiwi biochar functionalized with Mg-Fe (3:1) layered double hydroxides (LDH) was studied. And the biochar was got via liquid-phase deposition, by incorporating Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide (Mg-Fe LDH) particles into kiwi biochar (KB/LDH). The batch of sorption experiments were studied, including adsorption kinetics and isotherm and the effects of pH, ion strength (IS) and co-existing ions. The KB/LDH composite showed a strong sorption ability to Cd(II) in aqueous solutions with the adsorption capacity of 25.6 mg g−1, compared with pristine biochar of 1.78 mg g−1. The adsorption of Cd(II) on KB/LDH composite increased with the decreasing of IS, decreased first and then grew larger with the increase of pH and was observed irrespective of the co-existence of K+, Cl− and NO3−. To sum up, the KB/LDH can be potentially used as an alternative adsorbent to amend the water and soil contaminated by Cd(II).

A new thiophene derivative corrosion inhibitor (CI) was developed to functionalize the layered double hydroxide (LDH) primer on Mg alloy to enhance corrosion protection . Compared with bare LDH coating, the composite coatings consisting of a MgAl-LDH primer and an outer CI layer showed highly compact surface structures without large pores and gaps, thereby indicating the enhanced capability to resist the penetration of corrosive species. Electrochemical tests revealed that the MgAl-LDH film modified with the newly synthesized CI exhibited higher charge transfer resistance and lower corrosion current density than films modified with commercial CIs. The highest enhancement in corrosion resistance was linked to the film’s ability to repair physical damage by forming precipitates through chemical complexation and adsorption of the CIs. These findings open up new opportunities for the design and synthesis of a thiophene-contained inhibitor to modify LDH films and to obtain a composite coating with superior corrosion protection.

Hierarchical porous composite Mg-MOF-74/MCFs were successfully synthesized using a simple and facile method under in situ solvothermal conditions. Textural structures and morphologies of the composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results demonstrate that a large amount of nanosized Mg-MOF-74 particles is incorporated into the pores of mesocellular siliceous foams (MCFs) without remarkable aggregation and the composites possess microporous and mesoporous characteristics of both components. In addition, CO2 adsorption properties of the composites were tested in a fixed bed with/without hydrothermal treatment. The total CO2 adsorption capacities were calculated by breakthrough curves. The CO2 adsorption capacity of the composites reaches 1.68 mmol/g, which is smaller than that of pristine Mg-MOF-74. However, the total CO2 adsorption capacity of the composites after hydrothermal treatment reaches 2.66 mmol/g, which is larger than that of Mg-MOF-74 (2.39 mmol/g) under the same condition. XRD patterns and SEM images of the composites demonstrate that the hydrothermal stability and CO2 adsorption performance of the composites were improved compared with those of pristine Mg-MOF-74 after hydrothermal treatment.

Abstract In order to ensure the safety of materials used in the field of orthopedic internal fixation, cytocompatibility was evaluated by culturing MC3T3-E1 cells with the extracts of Mg-2Zn rods, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) rods, hot pressed and hot drawn Mg wire/PLA composite rods. The adhesion, spread, and growth states of cells on each group of sample were analyzed according to SEM images. The fluorescent micromorphology was analyzed, and the relative growth ratio was calculated to quantitatively evaluate the influence of these extracts on the cell viability. Results displayed that moderate and severe cytotoxicity appeared after cells incubated with extracts of Mg-2Zn rod for 3 and 5 days, but it returned to normal phenomenon after the extracts diluted by 10 times. Extracts of other three groups of sample displayed good cytocompatibility. The growth and proliferation of cells were closely related to the pH value and concentration of Mg 2+ . The osmolality changes of extracts had little influence on cytocompatibility of samples at the early stage. Therefore, we can predict the effect of degradation products of Mg wire/PLA composites on their cytocompatibility during the degradation process, on the basis of pH value, concentration of Mg 2+ , as well as osmolality changes. The good cytocompatibility of Mg wire/PLA composites provided experimental valid and valuable guideline for further material design and scheme selection. Graphical Abstract

Magnesium batteries are recognized as a potential alternative to lithium ion batteries benefited from the advantages of low cost, high safety, and high energy density . But the development of magnesium batteries suffers from the sluggish motion of Mg 2+ in solid electrodes due to strong polarization. Compounds explored to accommodate magnesiation/demagnesiation, suffer from low capacity, sluggish kinetics and poor cycling performance. In this manuscript, copper current collector aided tellurium (Te) as the cathode material of magnesium battery is proposed. Due to superior electronic structure of Te atom, both reactants and products of cathode reaction exhibit metallic conductivity which accelerates the magnesiation/demagnesiation process This material delivers a specific capacity of 338 mAh/g at 100 mA/g, and keeps at 178.5 mAh/g after 400 cycles. Moreover, the electrode performs superior rate capability than the previously reported materials. A specific capacity of 265.4 mAh/g is achieved at 2 A/g without obvious polarization. Even at a very high current density of 3.75 A/g, a specific capacity of 118 mAh/g is still maintained. This study highlights the importance of electronic structure for multi-valent ion reaction related material, which also offers new strategy for cathode design of Mg batteries.
