Synergistic water regulation and byproduct confinement in non-woven fabric-encapsulated Al@MgH2 for controlled hydrogen generation via parallel and sequential reactor designs
Non-woven fabric-encapsulated Al@MgH 2 blocks achieve controlled hydrolysis. • Non-woven fabric regulates water mass transfer and restricts byproduct expansion. • The sequential reactor produces hydrogen at a rate of 0.84 mL s −1 for 5177 s. • This work provides a safe and scalable material-to-system solution for H 2 supply. Active Al-based composite hydrolysis for hydrogen production holds broad application prospects in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, key challenges such as controllability of hydrogen production, byproduct recovery, and hydrogen purity still need to be addressed. This study tackles these issues by designing a non-woven fabric-encapsulated hydrogen production unit and two hydrolysis reactors. This unit consists of a non-woven fabric envelope and an internal Al@30 % MgH 2 block. The regular pore structure of the non-woven fabric regulates water mass transfer and confines byproducts. This leads to effective control of hydrogen production, enhanced solution utilization, and one-step byproduct recovery. The parallel and sequential hydrogen production reactors were designed according to the hydrolysis characteristics of the encapsulated unit. The flow paths of the reaction solution were controlled accordingly. Under low solution flow rate conditions, the parallel reactor achieved a stable hydrogen generation rate (sHGR) of 1.36 mL s −1 over 3573 s. The measured total hydrogen generation was 4579 mL. In contrast, the sequential reactor maintained a sHGR of 0.84 mL s −1 over 5177 s. The measured total hydrogen generation was 4448 mL. Purity tests confirmed that the hydrogen purity exceeded 99.2 %. This study combines physical encapsulation, solution injection strategy, and reactor design. This integrated approach overcomes the explosive reaction of active powders, achieves tunable hydrolysis kinetics, and provides a practical pathway from laboratory to application.
