A novel ultra-broadband red LaGeSbO6:Mn4+ phosphor with excellent responsiveness to phytochrome PFR for plant growth

Chunyan Zhou,Hua Fan,Jinling Huang,Shu Li,Yaoyao Huang,Meiping Huang,Yin Huang,Xinjing Guo,Liya Zhou

Broad red emitting phosphors are essential for the growth of indoor plants. Previous Mn 4+ -activated far-red phosphors typically displayed narrow emission, which could not well overlap with plant pigment absorption. A high temperature solid state technique was used to create the unique double perovskite LaGeSbO 6 :Mn 4+ phosphor with an emission peak centered at 700 nm and an impressive full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 100 nm. The origin of ultra-broadband emission of LGS:Mn 4+ phosphors was confirmed by crystal structure and time-resolved spectra owing to the occupation of the two octahedral [SbO 6 ] and [GeO 6 ] centers by the Mn 4+ ion. The quenching mechanism is brought about by the dipole-dipole interaction. The broadband emission is substantially broader than that of other Mn 4+ -activated red emitting phosphors previously described. Besides, the emission spectrum of LaGeSbO 6 :0.4%Mn 4+ matches well with the phytochrome P FR absorption band for plant development. All of the findings suggested that the novel LaGeSbO 6 :Mn 4+ phosphor could be potentially used in light-emitting diodes for indoor plant culture.

Realization of highly efficient Ba2SrWO6:Mn4+ phosphor via La addition strategy and application for plant cultivation LED

Yi Zhang,Cuiping Zhou,Jingwei Li,Jing Dong,Shuai Weng,Pengfei Yin,Xiyuan Sun,Jian Wang,Zhiwei Lu,Hanbing Rao

Herein, a novel Ba 2 SrWO 6 :Mn 4+ , La 3+ (BSW:Mn 4+ , La 3+ ) far-red phosphor was obtained by an addition strategy of La ion to negligible-luminescence BSW:Mn. Deep-red emission peaks at ∼ 664, 679 and 690 nm were observed for BSW:Mn 4+ , La 3+ with the excitation band in the 250 ∼ 600 nm spectral range, which are well matched to the absorption of chlorophyll and phytochromes. An impressive nanorod surface micro-morphology was observed in BSW samples and the size of the surface-grown nanorods can be changed by the addition of La ions. It was speculated that the generation of oxygen vacancies in BSW:Mn probably causes the self-reduction process of Mn 4+ → Mn 2+ , and a charge replenishment mechanism was proposed to explain the abnormal luminescence of Mn 4+ ions. The BSW:0.5%Mn, 5%La phosphor showed a CIE chromaticity coordinate of (0.724, 0.276) with a high color purity of 100%. In addition, the internal and external quantum efficiency of BSW:0.5%Mn, 5%La phosphor reach as high as 51.9% and 39.5%, respectively. Finally, LED devices were fabricated by using the as-prepared BSW:0.5%Mn, 5%La phosphor and applied in the illumination on tomato seeds. It shows that the LED devices can promote the seeding of tomatoes effectively, indicating a potential application value in the plant cultivation field.

Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped carbon dots as fenton-like catalysts for fluorescence dual-signal detection of dopamine

Zhu Peide,Zhao Xuelin,Zhang Yuqi,Liu Yinping,Zhao Ziyi,Yang Ziji,Liu Xinzhu,Zhang Weiye,Guo Zixuan,Wang Xiao,Niu Yingchun,Xu Meng

Carbon dots (CDs), a new zero-dimensional material, have ignited a revolution in the fields of sensing, bioimaging, and biomedicine. However, the difficulty of preparing CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties has seriously hindered their application in the diagnosis of oxidation/reduction biomolecules or metal ions. Here, an innovative method was successfully established to synthesize Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped blue-green fluorescent CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties using manganese acetate as the manganese source. Specifically, the CDs prepared here were equipped with functional groups of -COOH, NH2, C=O, and Mn-O, offering the possibility to function as a fluorescence sensor. More importantly, the introduction of manganese acetate resulted in the preparation of CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties, and the dual-signal fluorescence detection of dopamine (DA) was realized with linear ranges of 100–275 nM and 325–525 nM, and the detection limits were 3 and 12 nM, respectively. In addition, due to the Fenton-like catalytic activity of Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped CDs, the material has broad application prospects in the detection of oxidation/reduction biomolecules or metal ions related to disease diagnosis and prevention.

Yi Qin,Lingxiang Chu,Tao Yang,Jing Wan,Qiang Zhou,Yanqing Ye,Huaijun Tang,Zhengliang Wang

In this study, an efficient polyfluoride red-emitting phosphor, Cs 3 RbGe 2 F 12 :Mn 4+ (denoted as CRGF:Mn), has been synthesized using a simple co-precipitation method. The crystal and electronic structures, spectroscopic properties, and photoluminescence thermal stability of CRGF:Mn have been systematically characterized. The results show that Mn 4+ ions experience a strong crystal field and present a series of intense red emission peaks under blue light excitation. Moreover, CRGF:Mn exhibits a high color purity (95.1 %), high internal quantum efficiency (82.4 %), and enhanced photoluminescence thermal stability at 150 °C, with an intensity of 113 % relative to room temperature . A warm white light-emitting diode exhibiting a low correlated color temperature (3572 K), high color rendering index (90.7), and suitable luminous efficiency (132.6 lm/W) was prepared using CRGF:Mn as a red component, demonstrating viable application in solid-state lighting.

Fabrication of Predominantly Mn4+-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles under Equilibrium Conditions and Their Application as Visible-Light Photocatalyts

Lijie Wang,Jiajie Fan,Zetan Cao,Yichao Zheng,Zhiqiang Yao,Guosheng Shao,Junhua Hu

Graphical Achieving the correct balance : Manganese-doped TiO 2 is fabricated by a near-equilibrium process, in which the manganese dopant is substitutionally incorporated by replacing Ti 4+ cations. The significant red-shit effect (see picture) was attributed to the dominant 4+ valence oxidation state of Mn and the low oxygen vacancy in the lattice. The chemical state of a transition-metal dopant in TiO 2 can intrinsically determine the performance of the doped material in applications such as photocatalysis and photovoltaics. In this study, manganese-doped TiO 2 is fabricated by a near-equilibrium process, in which the TiO 2 precursor powder precipitates from a hydrothermally obtained transparent mother solution. The doping level and subsequent thermal treatment influence the morphology and crystallization of the TiO 2 samples. FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses indicate that the manganese dopant is substitutionally incorporated by replacing Ti 4+ cations. The absorption band edge can be gradually shifted to 1.8 eV by increasing the nominal manganese content to 10 at %. Manganese atoms doped into the titanium lattice are associated with the dominant 4+ valence oxidation state, which introduces two curved, intermediate bands within the band gap and results in a significant enhancement in photoabsorption and the quantity of photogenerated hydroxyl radicals. Additionally, the high photocatalytic performance of manganese-doped TiO 2 is also attributed to the low oxygen content, owing to the equilibrium fabrication conditions. This work provides an important strategy to control the chemical and defect states of dopants by using an equilibrium fabrication process.

Three Birds with One Stone: K2SiF6:Mn4+ Single Crystal Phosphors for High-Power and Laser-Driven Lighting

Yayun Zhou,Changkai Yu,Enhai Song,Yuanjing Wang,Hong Ming,Zhiguo Xia,Qinyuan Zhang

Narrow-band red-emitting fluoride phosphors play a crucial role in lighting and backlight displays, whereas the stability issue is a major challenge. Here, highly stable K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ (KSFM) single crystal phosphors with tunable sizes (20–1000 µ m) are grown by a facile saturated crystallization method. The small specific surface area together with the unique Mn 4+ -rare interface layer in KSFM single crystals enables the simultaneous fulfillment of high external quantum efficiency, excellent moisture, improved thermal quenching, and dissipation for high-power and laser-driven lighting applications. As a prototype, a warm white laser diode device with a high luminous flux of 202.7 lm and correlated color temperature of 3277 K, as well as a color rendering index of 87.9 is presented. This work provides new insights into the development of highly efficient and stable materials for advanced lighting applications.

A Mn4+-doped oxyfluoride phosphor with remarkable negative thermal quenching and high color stability for warm WLEDs

Shengan He,Fanfan Xu,Tiantian Han,Zeqin Lu,Wei Wang,Jiaqing Peng,Fu Du,Fengli Yang,Xinyu Ye

Red-emitting phosphors composed of Mn 4+ -activated fluorides have attracted considerable interest for their applications in warm white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). However, in addition to moisture instability, the unsatisfactory thermal stability of these phosphors limits their industrial applications. In this study, a novel red phosphor of CsMoO 2 F 3 :Mn 4+ was synthesized via simple coprecipitation. This red phosphor exhibits an orthorhombic structure with a bandgap of ~3.43 eV. The Mn 4+ ions occupy Mo 6+ sites at the centers of [MoO 2 F 4 ] 2− octahedrons. This phosphor shows narrow emission around ~633 nm excited by 450 nm blue-chip with high color purity of 99.58%. Satisfactorily, this phosphor exhibits excellent thermal stability and a strong negative-thermal-quenching. The total PL intensity of CsMoO 2 F 3 :3.88%Mn 4+ phosphor at 275 K strengthens to ~540% relative to that at 25 K, and its relative emission intensity preserves about 129.3% when the temperature rises from room temperature to 423 K (150 ℃). It also shows admirable color stability with a slight chromaticity shift ( ΔE ) of only ~ 33.9 × 10 - 3 33.9×10-3 in the temperature region from 298 to 473 K. Furthermore, a warm WLED was fabricated by the mixture of red-emitting CsMoO 2 F 3 :3.88%Mn 4+ and the yellow-emitting YAG:Ce 3+ phosphors with a blue-emitting InGaN LED chip. The device exhibits low correlated color temperature (3983 K) and high color-rendering index (Ra = 81.3). With the increasing drive current from 20 mA to 120 mA, the chromaticity coordinate variation (CCV) is only (−0.0163, 0.0202). All these results indicate that the CsMoO 2 F 3 :Mn 4+ phosphor holds tremendous potential for practical applications in high-power lighting and display with high-performance WLEDs.

Two-step synthesis of a novel red-emitting Ba2ZrF8:Mn4+ phosphor for warm white light-emitting diodes

Ming Gu,Yue Tian,Cai’e Cui,Ping Huang,Lei Wang,Qiufeng Shi

A novel red-emitting Ba 2 ZrF 8 : Mn 4+ phosphor was prepared by two-step method at low temperature, where critical precursor K 2 MnF 6 was prepared first by the reduction of KMnO 4 using H 2 O2 as reducer. The crystal structure and morphology of the phosphor was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), showing single phase product. Luminescent properties of the phosphor were investigated by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and decay curves. The molar ratio of KMnO 4 : KHF 2 was confirmed to play the key role in improving the luminous efficiency. More importantly, the phosphor exhibits a broadband excitation from 300 to 520 nm due to 4 A 2g → 4 T 1g and 4 A 2g → 4 T 2g transition of Mn 4+ , matching well with blue LED chips. Under 465 nm excitation, intense red emission at around 630 nm with high color purity is achieved, suggesting the red-emitting phosphor has great potential for white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs).

Synthesis and photoluminescence of Mn4+ activated ternary-alkaline fluoride K2NaGaF6 red phosphor for warm-white LED application

Shijie Qiu,Hengwei Wei,Mengmeng Wang,Shuai Zhang,Yang Zhou,Ling Xu,Xiaoming Wang,Huan Jiao

A novel ternary-alkaline red emitting fluoride phosphor K2NaGaF6:Mn4+ was successfully synthesized through co-precipitation method. The crystal structure, morphology, electronic band structure and luminescence properties of K2NaGaF6:Mn4+ phosphors were investigated in details by using Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction data, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), density functional theory (DFT) calculation and different reaction parameters. The K2NaGaF6 host has a cubic unit cell with the space group Fmm and lattice parameters of a = 8.2577 (4) Å, Z = 4, Vcell = 563.08 (8) Å3. Under blue light excitation, Mn4+ activated K2NaGaF6 exhibits a bright narrow-band red emission. The PL properties of the K2NaGaF6:Mn4+ red phosphors were optimized with different Mn4+ concentrations and aging times. A warm-white LED device was fabricated using a blue LED chip combined with commercial yellow YAG:Ce3+ phosphor and synthesized K2NaGaF6:Mn4+ red phosphor. The color rendering index (CRI, Ra = 81.6) and corresponding color temperature (CCT = 3643 K) easily reached the commercial warm white light LED standards (Ra > 80 and CCT < 4000 K). All these results indicate that K2NaGaF6:Mn4+ phosphor would be a suitable red phosphor candidate for warm-white LED applications.

Enhanced luminescence performance in double perovskite CaSrLaSbO6: Mn4+ red emission phosphors for indoor plant growth via cation doping

Bin Li,Rongbo Ma,Chong Yang,Bin Cao,Chaoyong Deng,Weichao Huang

Novel CaSrLaSbO 6 : Mn 4+ red-emitting phosphors with double perovskite structure were successfully synthesized by the high-temperature solid-phase method. CaSrLaSbO 6 :Mn 4+ phosphor showed a broad excitation band with different excitation peaks from 250 nm to 600 nm owing to the Mn 4+ -O 2- charge transfer and 4 A 2g → ( 4 T 1g , 2 T 2g , and 4 T 2g ) transitions of Mn 4+ ions and exhibited intense deep-red emission at 678 nm attributed to the 2 E g → 4 A 2g transition of Mn 4+ ions. To further enhance the performance of the phosphor, a cation doping method was adopted in this paper to synthesize CaSrLa 1- x Ln x SbO 6 : Mn 4+ (Ln = Gd, Y) phosphors. The luminescence intensity of the samples was enhanced after doping with different cations, and the related mechanism was discussed. In addition, the microstructure and crystal field environment were systematically investigated. The luminescence intensity of the CaSrLa 0.85 Y 0.15 SbO 6 : Mn 4+ phosphor was about 1.82 times higher than that of CaSrLaSbO 6 : Mn 4+ phosphor. The emission spectrum of the sample matched well with the absorption band of plant pigments. Furthermore, the plant growth LEDs and light-conversion film were prepared by using the optimized CaSrLa 0.85 Y 0.15 SbO 6 : Mn 4+ . The results indicate that the designed phosphors have great potential applications in agricultural cultivation.

Optical Properties of Mg2GeO4:Mn4+ Phosphors: From Fine Structures of Vibronic Transitions to the Density of Phonon States

Hongyi Zhu,Yitong Wang,Wanggui Ye,Tianlong Ruan,Fei Tang,Jiqiang Ning,Shijie Xu

To address the spectral deficiencies in the red region of commercial white LEDs, developing red-emitting phosphors with reduced dependence on rare-earth elements with limited availability is crucial for spectral compensation. Herein, microstructures and optical characteristics of Mn4+-activated Mg2GeO4 phosphors are presented. While the phosphor exhibits a single orthorhombic phase, its cryogenic micro-Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectra comprises 19 peaks and three groups of vibronic emissions with wealthy fine structures, respectively. Following the split zero-phonon lines, nine pairs of vibronic lines with an energy separation of 3.5 meV are identified. Furthermore, the overall line shape of the three groups of phonon sidebands can be reproduced by the fully symmetric electron–phonon coupling model, enabling determination of the total density of phonon states. The study sheds light on complicated luminescence fine structures in Mn4+-activated oxide phosphors, offering valuable insights into the design of red-emitting phosphors.

A novel deep-red phosphor CaGdLiTeO6:Mn4+ with high color purity and quantum efficiency for plant cultivation applications

Zibo Mi,Xiaoqing Pei,Lin Fan,Tao Jiang,Lina Liu,Chun Li,Hai Lin,Shasha Li,Weiling Yang,Fanming Zeng

Photobiological studies have established that red light (600–750 nm) is essential for driving photosynthesis. However, many current Mn 4+ doped red phosphors are hindered by inherent limitations such as low quantum efficiency and inadequate moisture resistance, which restricts their practical application. In this study, we designed a novel phosphor, CaGdLiTeO 6 :Mn 4+ . Under 310 nm excitation, the phosphor exhibits the 2 E g → 4 A 2g transition of Mn 4+ , producing narrowband deep-red emission at 694 nm. Its emission spectrum significantly extends into the far-red region, effectively covering the absorption band of phytochrome Pfr (peak ∼730 nm). This material achieves an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 82.3 % and a color purity of 99.9 % (CIE coordinates: 0.7335, 0.2665), along with excellent thermal stability (67.64 % emission retention at 150 °C) and moisture resistance (96.56 % emission retention after 168 h immersion in water). Finally, a plant lighting system was developed based on this phosphor. In experiments, the height of wheatgrass increased by 31.1 %, while fresh weight and dry weight increased by 24.1 % and 30.3 %, respectively. This study provides new materials and strategies for the development of high-efficiency, eco-friendly agricultural light-emitting diodes. In addition, the prepared polymethylsiloxane composite films demonstrate their potential for flexible display and other applications under harsh environmental conditions.
