Oxygen vacancy engineering via Mo doping in NiO nanofibers for selective trace xylene detection

Xiaowen Zhang,Qi Lei,Lixiang Wang,Qingge Feng,Qihua Liang

Xylene poses a threat to environmental and public health due to its neurotoxicity and strong irritancy, necessitating the development of efficient trace detection technologies. However, existing metal oxide semiconductor-based xylene sensors tend to have drawbacks such as high detection limits, insufficient response, poor humidity resistance, and susceptibility to cross-interference from aromatic compounds. In this study, Mo-doped nickel oxide nanofibers with varying doping ratios were fabricated by combining a facile electrospinning process with thermal treatment, and their gas-sensing properties were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrate that the sensor with a Mo doping concentration of 12.5 at% exhibited the maximum response to 20 ppm xylene at 265 °C (S ≈ 120.9), an ultra-low detection limit of 20 ppb, excellent selectivity, outstanding humidity resistance, and long-term stability. The improvement in sensing performance primarily stems from the modulation of valence state distribution in nickel oxide by aliovalent molybdenum doping. This process improves charge transfer efficiency and increases oxygen vacancy concentration. Additionally, the incorporation of Mo significantly enlarges the specific surface area and increases the quantity of micropores and mesopores. These factors collectively optimize the activity of surface chemisorbed oxygen, thereby markedly improving gas-sensing reaction efficiency. In situ Fourier transform infrared analysis reveals the surface oxidation reaction process and final reaction products of xylene. This work provides a feasible material strategy for developing high-performance xylene gas sensors, demonstrating promising potential for applications in trace xylene detection.

Negative Bias Potential Derived n-Si/Pt/Mo: BiVO4 Tandem Photoanode for Water Splitting

Handuo Fu,Ke Fang,Shenhui Ma,Lin Wang,Yuyu Bu

In theory, the utilization of a Z-scheme photogenerated carrier transport system has the potential to significantly enhance the photogenerated voltage for photoelectrochemical overall water splitting. However, thus far, there have been no previous reports on such phenomena with silicon-based semiconductor photoelectrodes. In this study, we fabricated an n-Si/Pt/Mo-doped BiVO 4 (Mo: BVO) sandwich-like film with an intermediate carrier transfer layer to prepare a silicon-based photoelectrode with an indirect Z-scheme system. Additionally, by leveraging the lattice distortion effect over Mo: BVO, we increased the fusion ability of the sandwich-like interface between different substances. For the first time, we achieved generation of anodic displacement current via negative voltage (−0.57 V (vs. RHE)), resulting in a photocurrent density of 1.56 mA/cm 2 and a photogenerated voltage five times higher than that of the n-Si/Mo: BVO structure. Through combining experimental approaches with theoretical calculations, it has been confirmed that this realization is attributed to the contribution of the transport process within the Z-scheme system in the n-Si photoelectrode. Furthermore, milliampere-level photocurrent under negative bias was observed for the first time on an n-Si photoelectrode, providing a novel approach for constructing silicon-based photoelectrodes for overall water splitting.

Directional electron transfer in ZnIn₂S₄/Mo₂TiC₂-Ru for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Qing Xi,Huimin Yan,Fangxia Xie,Rui Li,Jianxin Liu,Caimei Fan,Zhixin Jin,Hongwei Wang

A directional photogenerated electron transfer channel from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru was formed in ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru. • The interface electronic delocalization effect between Ru nanoclusters and Mo 2 TiC 2 synergistically optimizes the water dissociation and hydrogen evolution sites. • ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity under both visible light and natural light conditions. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) rate on ZnIn 2 S 4 is severely limited by the low utilization of photogenerated electrons and the sluggish reaction kinetics. Driving the directional transfer of photogenerated electrons to the target site is crucial for enhancing the electron utilization efficiency and the PHE performance. Herein, this study rationally designed a ternary composite photocatalyst ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , in which Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C serves as an electron acceptor and efficient active site. The in-situ KPFM and Mott-Schottky results indicate that the establishment of interfacial electron transport channel accelerates the transfer of photogenerated electrons from ZnIn 2 S 4 to Mo 2 TiC 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the strong metal-support interaction (EMSI) and interfacial electron delocalization of Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C , which synergistically optimize the water dissociation at Ru nanocluster and the hydrogen evolution desorption at the Mo 2 TiC 2 terminal, promoting the efficient utilization of photogenerated electrons. Therefore, ZnIn 2 S 4 /Mo 2 TiC 2 -Ru C achieved a PHE rate of 6.15 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible light, and demonstrated excellent potential for PHE application under natural light. This study provides a new paradigm for integrating electron transfer dynamics with active site engineering to improve the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electrons in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process. In situ preparation of Cu-Mo-S nanoparticle additive with multi-functional tribological properties

Lulu Tian,Yuanping Huang,Chaoran Li,Shuang Chen,Jiayu Peng,Liyong Niu,Zhijun Zhang

Complex operating conditions pose greater challenges for lubricants, making the development of multi-functional additives a trend. This research introduces a multifunctional Cu-Mo-S nanoparticle (CMS) additive, synthesized using a unique one-pot in situ method. The CMS significantly improved the tribological performance and oxidation stability of base oils. Specifically, 0.5 wt% CMS manifested a remarkable reduction in the friction coefficient and wear volume of ester-based oils by 74.75% and 95.91%, accompanied by a noteworthy increase in the extreme pressure capabilities exceeding 50%, outperforming the individual copper nanoparticles, organic molybdenum, and their mixtures. The remarkable results are attributed to the distinctive structure of CMS, which decomposed during the friction process, forming a continuous friction film containing copper, molybdenum, and iron compounds.

Synergistic effects between Mo and Pd supported on carbon for enhanced deuterium evolution performance

Liangbin Shao,Zhiqi Zhao,Na Xu,Yuanan Li,Haoze Li,Yuan Sheng,Shijie Zhang,Jianguo Wang

Deuterium (D 2 ) is a strategic material essential to the nuclear, fiber optic, and semiconductor industries. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis of heavy water (D 2 O) is a robust and environmentally friendly method for D 2 production, but its energy efficiency is limited by the sluggish deuterium evolution reaction (DER). While being a promising DER catalyst, Pd still suffers from suboptimal DER kinetics due to strong adsorption of active deuterium (D∗). Herein, synergistic interactions between Pd and Mo/MoO x on carbon black are introduced to modulate the adsorption of active deuterium/hydrogen, leading to outstanding deuterium/hydrogen evolution performance. In 0.5 M D 2 SO 4 (H 2 SO 4 ), the optimal PdMo/C catalyst exhibits a record low overpotential of 19.1 mV (13.3 mV) at 10 mA cm −2 and a mass activity 10 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, PdMo/C outperforms Pt/C in PEM electrolysis of D 2 O at 1.5–3.0 A cm −2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, DFT calculation, and D∗ underpotential deposition experiments show decreased electron density of Pd and reduced adsorption energy of D∗ in the presence of Mo that lead to enhanced intrinsic activity. This work offers valuable insights into the development of high-performance Pd-based electrocatalysts and demonstrates their potential in industrial production of D 2 .

Catalyzing "C network" by Mo-Fe-S NPs for driven growth of CNTs arrays

Peng Wang,Ruiliang Wang,Chenyu Gao,Lianlian Wang,Qianpeng Dong,Dianming Chu,Yan He,Wenjuan Bai

During the catalytic growth of CNTs, the ordered arrangement of catalysts is critical for maintaining their array structure. Unlike mechanisms that suppress nanoparticle migration via high catalyst density to enforce CNTs array growth, this study proposes a strategy involving surface engineering and nanoparticle nucleation to construct Mo-Fe-S/Al 2 O 3 heterogeneous ternary catalysts. This method modulates the electronic density of Fe sites to activate catalytic activity while constructing Mo-Fe-S sites on the catalyst surface to catalyze the growth of a "C network" (carbon pillars and CNTs), thereby forming CNTs arrays. On one hand, S and Mo weaken the interfacial interactions between Al 2 O 3 and inactive FeO x nanoparticles, promoting active particle nucleation; on the other hand, the "C network" grown via Mo-Fe-S constitutes the top part of the CNTs arrays, confining the internal nanoparticles (NPs) to enable vertically aligned growth of CNTs. Characterizations reveal NPs with diameters of ∼20 nm and symmetrically grown CNTs arrays with average diameters and heights of 18.21 nm and 10.10μm, respectively. This work provides an approach for the catalytic growth of CNTs arrays using supported catalysts, by forming a "C network" to suppress the entanglement of NPs during the catalytic growth of CNTs, thereby forming the CNTs array structure.

Synergistic mechanical-degradation coupling in novel immiscible Mo-Cu alloy for biodegradable implant applications

Lebing Chang,Kun Li,Zeyun Cai,Peng Du,Yongxiao Wang,Chao Zhou,Enxiang Jiao,Ahsan Riaz Khan,Guoqiang Xie,Weizong Bao,Haijun Zhang

Mo alloys have emerged as a promising biodegradable metallic material due to its inherent biocompatibility and mechanical robustness. However, its clinical translation is limited by slow degradation kinetics and intrinsic brittleness. In this study, we propose a powder metallurgy-based strategy to develop immiscible Mo-Cu alloys that overcome these challenges. Cu is introduced as alloying element which due to higher corrosion potential, excellent plasticity and antimicrobial properties. The optimized Mo-Cu alloy shows a notable increase in strength by 150 MPa while maintaining ductility. Moreover, the degradation rate nearly doubles from 2.553×10 -2 to 4.765×10 -2 mm/y) due to microstructural refinement and galvanic effects. In vitro studies further confirm the biocompatibility and enhanced antibacterial performance of Mo-Cu alloys. This work provides a practical pathway for designing next-generation biodegradable implants based on immiscible alloy systems.

Mo-Dopant-Enhanced Energy Storage Performance of VS2 Microflowers as Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors

Jingwei Wang,Xuejun Zheng,Long Xie,Zhenhua Xiang,Wenyuan He

It is found that Mo doping can enhance the supercapacitor performance of VS2microflowers. The X-ray diffraction combined with energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectra results verify the successful doping of Mo atoms into the VS2matrix. As the electrode material of supercapacitors, the Mo-doped VS2performs better electrochemical performance than pristine VS2, achieving the specific capacitance of 170 F g−1at 0.5 A g−1and 389.5 F g−1at 5 mV s−1. Furthermore, the symmetric supercapacitor based on the Mo-doped VS2exhibits good stability and ideal rate capability. The enhanced capability is presumably ascribed to the more accessible active sites and faster electrons/ions diffusion kinetics, which are caused by the increased specific surface area, expanded interlayer spacing, and improved conductivity after Mo doping. This strategy can also be extended to strengthen the capacitive properties of other transition metal dichalcogenides for advanced energy storage devices.

Mo monoatomic doping of ReS2 quantum dots with size control for piezoelectric synergistic photocatalysis

Shen Jin-Feng,Huang Shu-Le,Qin Mo-Ran,Xuan Xin-Miao,Su Shao-Qiang,Zhang Xiao-Ming,Xu Xin-Xing,Hou Zhi-Peng,Zhang Zhang,Liu Jun-Ming

Water purification systems based on transition metal dichalcogenides face significant challenges, including lack of reactivity under dark conditions, scarcity of catalytically active sites, and rapid recombination of photo-generated charge carriers. Simultaneously increasing the number of active sites and improving charge separation efficiency has proven difficult. In this study, we present a novel approach combining molybdenum (Mo) monoatomic doping and size engineering to produce a series of Mo-ReS 2 quantum dots (MR QDs) with controllable dimensions. High-resolution structural characterization, first-principle calculations, and piezo force microscopy reveal that Mo monoatomic doping enhances the lattice asymmetry, thereby improving the piezoelectric properties. The resulting piezoelectric polarization and the generated built-in electric field significantly improve charge separation efficiency, leading to optimized photocatalytic performance. Additionally, the doping strategy increases the number of active sites and improves the adsorption of intermediate radicals, substantially boosting photo-sterilization efficiency. Our results demonstrate the elimination of 99.95% of Escherichia coli and 100.00% of Staphylococcus aureus within 30 min. Furthermore, we developed a self-purification system simulating water drainage, utilizing low-frequency water streams to trigger the piezoelectric behavior of MR QDs, achieving piezoelectric synergistic photodegradation. This innovative approach provides a more environmentally friendly and economical method for water self-purification, paving the way for advanced water treatment technologies. Graphical

Electron modulation of cobalt carbonate hydroxide by Mo doping for urea-assisted hydrogen production

Siyu Zheng,Hongye Qin,Xuejie Cao,Tongzhou Wang,Wenbo Lu,Lifang Jiao

Combining urea oxidation reaction (UOR) with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an effective method for energy saving and highly efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen production . Herein, molybdenum-incorporated cobalt carbonate hydroxide nanoarrays (Co x Mo y CH) are designed and synthesized as a bifunctional catalyst towards UOR and HER . Benefiting from the Mo doping, the dispersed nanoarray structure and redistributed electron density, the Co x Mo y CH catalyst display outstanding catalytic performance and durability for both HER and UOR, affording the overpotential of 82 mV for HER and delivering a low potential of the 1.33 V for UOR (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) to attain a current density of 10 mA cm − 2 , respectively. Remarkably, when Co x Mo y CH was applied as bifunctional catalyst in a two-electrode electrolyzer, a working voltage of 1.40 V is needed in urea-assisted water electrolysis at 10 mA cm −2 and without apparent decline for 40 h, outperforming the working voltage of 1.51 V in conventional water electrolysis.

Creation of Mo active sites on indium oxide microrods for photocatalytic amino acid production

Zheng Mang,Li Qi,Liu Mingyang,Liu Jianan,Zhao Chen,Xiao Xudong,Wang Hongli,Zhou Jing,Zhang Liping,Jiang Baojiang

As an n-type semiconductor, In 2 O 3 is considered a promising photocatalyst for producing amino acids using biomass derivatives as precursors. However, similar to other intrinsic semiconductors, In 2 O 3 suffers from poor charge dynamics. Herein, we show the synthesis of Mo-doped In 2 O 3 (Mo-In 2 O 3 ) with a porous rod-shaped structure through a one-step solvothermal reaction followed by calcination. Under visible-light irradiation, Mo-In 2 O 3 achieves a high conversion rate of 81% for the reaction that transforms lactic acid into alanine with a selectivity of 91%. Spectroscopic techniques and density functional theory calculations reveal that Mo doping introduces defect states slightly below the conduction band of In 2 O 3 , which improves the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In addition, Mo atoms on the surface form extra adsorption and reaction centers that greatly enhance the reaction rate. This work provides insights into the development of transition metal-doped semiconductor photocatalysts to produce amino acids.
