Application of Mo2C for enhancement of co-catalytic performance of Fe3+/PS based fenton-like reaction in degrading tetracycline hydrochloride

Hao Cheng,Yi Wen,Chao Huang,Ping Wang,Chengyou Sun,Chongling Feng,Jialu Xu,Li Du,Ting Yan,Min Cheng

In this work, molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) was innovatively introduced into the trivalent iron/sodium persulfate (Fe 3+ /PS) based Fenton-like process for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation, and its co-catalytic performance was compared with three typical metal sulfides (tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), molybdenum sulfide (MoS 2 ), and cobalt disulfide (CoS 2 )). Results indicated that the Mo 2 C/Fe 3+ /PS system had significantly higher rates of TC removal (0.3054 min −1 ) and Fe(III) reduction (1.6622 min −1 ) compared to the three metal sulfide systems. The Mo 2 C/Fe 3+ /PS system could be adapted to a wide pH range (2.7–8.5), and Mo 2 C still had excellent co-catalytic performance after five cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of Mo(II) and Mo(IV) on the surface of Mo 2 C, which can directly reduce Fe 3+ , thus significantly improving the reaction efficiency. Quenching and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance experiments demonstrated that four oxidative species were involved in Mo 2 C/Fe 3+ /PS system. The continuous reduction of Fe(III) by Mo 2 C contributed to the significant enhancement of PS activation in the Mo 2 C/Fe 3+ /PS system. Moreover, the presence of water matrix such as chloride ions (Cl − ), nitrate ions (NO 3 − ), and humic acid (HA) had almost no significant effect on TC degradation, indicating that the Mo 2 C/Fe 3+ /PS system can work effectively under complex conditions. In summary, this study provides a novel and efficient strategy to accelerate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and activate PS for TC degradation, which is expected to advance the development of the Fenton-like process.

Synergistically coupling P-doped Mo2C@N, P dual-doped carbon-nanoribbons as an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Baoli Wang,Yuhao Huang,Yijing Ai,Yucen Yao,Fan Shi,Shiguan Xu,Zejun Zhang,Xianghui Wang,Wei Sun

Developing non-noble and high-performance electrocatalysts towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline media remains a stern challenge. Herein, the composite of P-doped Mo2C and a hierarchically ultrathin N, P-doped carbon nanoribbon network (P-Mo2C/NPC) is proposed through a facile simultaneous phosphating-carbonization strategy, in which biomass and phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) were employed as the carbon precursor and metal precursor, respectively. The doping of the electronegative P heteroatom increases the active sites, weakens the Mo–H bond strength in the HER, and facilitates the electron transfer. Consequently, the synthesized catalyst exhibits good intrinsic activity towards the HER, and shows low overpotentials of 172 mV and 118 mV to afford the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, respectively. Furthermore, the synthesized catalyst can sustain 24 h with stable performance, which is greatly favorable for industrial applications. This work may shed some light on the rational design and manufacture of HER electrocatalysts with high compatibility to different electrolytic environments.

Flexible electrode fabricated from molybdate-loaded silk fabric for hydrogen production

Jialong Wu,Xiaoning Zhang,Fucheng Ju,Can Huang,Carrie Donley,Peng Xiao,Lan Xu,Hongju Zhang

The broad use of the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is impeded by challenges associated with the availability and high cost of precious metal-based catalysts. Carbon materials co-doped with transition metals and nitrogen have emerged as highly promising alternatives among non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts due to their advantageous features, such as cost-effectiveness, high activity, and excellent stability. This study focuses on incorporating low-cost sodium molybdate onto silk fabric, which serves as a sustainable precursor for the preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon material. This silk fabric is then carbonized to create a flexible electrode for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrode exhibits the in situ growth of Mo 2 C and MoO 3 , and this mechanism facilitates a smoother conduction path for electrons. The resulting electrode not only possesses flexible characteristics but also exhibits a large specific surface area. Transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals the presence of carbon quantum dots, which actively contribute to the heightened catalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the prepared electrode. Experimental findings unequivocally showcase the outstanding electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution capability and operational stability of the fabricated flexible electrode in acidic and alkaline environments. This work substantiates the efficacy of using low-cost sodium molybdate-loaded silk fabric as a catalyst precursor, thereby providing robust support for the design and implementation of non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for the HER. This approach advances the development and broader application of carbon-free fuels.

Design of a long-lived Mo2C-MoO2@GC-N electrocatalyst by the ambient DC arc plasma for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Marian Chufarov,Yuliya Z. Vassilyeva,Xinyu Zhang,Shilin Li,Alexander Y. Pak,Wei Han

A crucial challenge in hydrogen production through electrolysis is developing inexpensive, earth-abundant, and highly efficient Pt-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Molybdenum carbide is ideal for this application because of its special electrical structure, low cost, and advantageous characteristics. Herein, the long-lived electrocatalysts for HER have been synthesized via the direct current (DC) arc discharge plasma method under ambient air conditions, and the relationship between the properties of materials and catalytic characteristics has been established. The samples differed in the ratio of molybdenum, graphite, and melamine. The sample with the highest proportion of melamine in the initial mixture has Mo2C-MoO2 heterointerfaces, which demonstrates the highest and most stable electrocatalytic activity with the overpotential of 148 mV at 10 mA·cm- 2 and Tafel slope of 63 mV·dec −1 in alkaline electrolyte. Meanwhile, the electrodes demonstrated long-lived electrochemical durability for two weeks and investigated the features of forming a stable system for HER.

Molybdenum carbide anchored on glucose-derived carbon (β-Mo2C@C) as a bifunctional catalyst for conversion of fructose to 2,5-diformylfuran

Zhenzhen Yang,Yuhan He,Pengfei Tang,Bangchong Zhu,Genlei Zhang,Jianbo He

Direct conversion of biomass-based fructose to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) has attracted much attention in recent years. In this study, molybdenum carbide anchored on glucose-derived carbon (β-Mo2C@C) was synthesized by a simple, green and economical method and was found to be highly active for production of DFF from 5-hydromethylfurfural (HMF) and fructose. DFF was obtained with high yields of 94.5% and 76.0% from aerobic oxidation of HMF and “one-pot” conversion of fructose under optimal reaction conditions, respectively. A probable mechanism involving Mo6+/Mo2+ redox cycles was proposed for β-Mo2C@C-catalyzed oxidation of HMF to DFF according to the experimental and characterization results. Furthermore, the β-Mo2C@C catalyst can be reused without much loss of catalytic activity, suggesting that β-Mo2C@C is highly stable.

Transforming Waste into Valuable Resources: Mo2C Nanoparticles Modified Waste Pinecone-Derived Carbon as an Effective Sulfur Host for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Zhe Yang,Yicheng Han,Kai Chen,Guodong Zhang,Shuangxi Xing

In this paper, the natural waste pinecone as a carbon precursor for the generation of satisfactory sulfur host materials in lithium–sulfur batteries was realized by introducing molybdenum carbide nanoparticles into the derived carbon structure. The conductive pinecone-derived carbon doped with N, O reveals an expansive specific surface area, facilitating the accommodation of a higher sulfur load. Moreover, the integration of Mo2C nanoparticles also significantly enhances its chemical affinity and catalytic capacity for polysulfides (LiPSs) to alleviate the shuttle effect and accelerate sulfur redox conversion. As a result, the WPC-Mo2C/S electrode displays excellent electrochemical performance, including a low capacity decay rate of 0.074% per cycle during 600 cycles at 1 C and an outstanding rate capacity (631.2 mAh g−1at 3 C). Moreover, with a high sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm−2, the WPC-Mo2C/S electrode shows a high area capacity of 5.1 mAh cm−2after 60 cycles at 0.2 C.

Accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle for rapid elimination of Rhodamine B by a novel Mo2C co-catalytic Fe2+/H2O2 system

Hao Cheng,Xinyan Li,Chao Huang,Jian Zhu,Ping Wang,Heng Cao,Chongling Feng,Dingxun Ling,Hao Liu,Min Cheng

Commercial molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) and ferrous iron (Fe 2+ ) were investigated for the first time to co-catalyze the activation of H 2 O 2 for the treatment of organic contaminants . Compared with traditional Fenton process, the presence of Mo 2 C decomposed hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) more effectively and accelerated the conversion of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ . The Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate constant in Mo 2 C/Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 reached appropriately three times that in Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 , and the co-catalytic reactivity of Mo 2 C was significantly higher than that of MoS 2 . In addition, Mo 2 C/Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 exhibited a board effective pH range of 2.8–8.8, and four-cycle experiments confirmed the stability and reusability of Mo 2 C. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that Mo(Ⅱ) and Mo(IV) played major roles in Fe 3+ reduction. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance analysis and quenching experiments demonstrated that hydroxyl radical (·OH), superoxide anion radical (O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen radical ( 1 O 2 ) were all involved in Mo 2 C/Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 . Particularly, Mo 2 C/Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 significantly enhanced the generation of ·OH and 1 O 2 in comparison to Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 . Moreover, toxicity assessment analysis by ECOSAR suggested that the toxicity of most degradation products of RhB decreased after treatment. Overall, this study offers a promising Mo 2 C co-catalyzed Fenton process for rapid and efficient abatement of organic contaminants.

Dual-phase MoC-Mo2C nanosheets prepared by molten salt electrochemical conversion of CO2 as excellent electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Yunfei Chen,Biao Gao,Mingyong Wang,Xiang Xiao,Aijing Lv,Shuqiang Jiao,Paul K. Chu

Dual-phase structures usually have better electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to synergistic effects . Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to prepare dual-phase MoC-Mo 2 C nanosheets by electro-reduction of CO 2 on the Mo cathode in CaCl 2 -CaO molten salts through an in situ reaction between molybdenum and carbon. The composition of the molybdenum carbide samples can be adjusted by the cell voltage and temperature. As the Mo 2 C contents go up, the HER activity of molybdenum carbide increases initially and then decreases slightly. The dual-phase MoC-Mo 2 C nanosheets prepared at 850 °C and 2.5 V show the best activity due to the hydrogen adsorption-desorption balance. The results reveal an innovative and sustainable strategy to prepare highly efficient HER electrocatalysts and also a green route to recycle and utilize CO 2 .

A new method for preparing ultrafine Mo2C by the CVD reaction of CO and gaseous MoO3: Parameter optimization and its formation mechanism

Lu Wang,Bing-Han Sun,Jian-Jun Yu,Jian-Li Li

In the work, the method of chemical vapor deposition reaction of CO and gaseous MoO 3 was proposed to prepare ultrafine Mo 2 C. Different technologies, such as XRD, FESEM, TEM, laser particle size analysis and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, as well as thermodynamic software FactSage 8.3, were adopted to analyze the experimental data. The results revealed that increasing the flow-rate of reduction‑carbonization regent CO ( V outer (CO)) was beneficial for the formation of Mo 2 C; while when V outer (CO) exceeded the threshold value, single-phase Mo 2 C cannot be prepared. The optimal conditions for preparing ultrafine Mo 2 C were given as T  = 1223–1323 K, V outer (CO) = 900 mL/min, and V inner (Ar) = 100 mL/min; herein, V inner (Ar) means the flow-rate of carrier gas Ar. Under these conditions, the preparation procedures of Mo 2 C followed the pathways of MoO 3  → (MoO 3 ) n ( n  = 2, 3, 4, and 5) → MoO 2  → Mo 2 C. The study also discovered that the as-prepared Mo 2 C kept the overall morphology as the intermediate product MoO 2 with a hexagonal-platelet structure; however, due to the removal of oxygen and the decrease of products' molar volume, the prepared Mo 2 C exhibited a rougher and more porous micro-structure with a specific surface area up to 36.7 m 2 /g. This work may provide an important methodical guidance for the scale-preparation of ultrafine Mo 2 C.

Formation of Mo–Polydopamine Hollow Spheres and Their Conversions to MoO2/C and Mo2C/C for Efficient Electrochemical Energy Storage and Catalyst

Chunli Wang,Lianshan Sun,Feifei Zhang,Xuxu Wang,Qujiang Sun,Yong Cheng,Limin Wang

Highly uniform hierarchical Mo–polydopamine hollow spheres are synthesized for the first time through a liquid-phase reaction under ambient temperature. A self-assembly mechanism of the hollow structure of Mo–polydopamine precursor is discussed in detail, and a determined theory is proposed in a water-in-oil system. Via different annealing process, these precursors can be converted into hierarchical hollow MoO 2 /C and Mo 2 C/C composites without any distortion in shape. Owing to the well-organized structure and nanosize particle embedding, the as-prepared hollow spheres exhibit appealing performance both as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries and as the catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Accordingly, MoO 2 /C delivers a high reversible capacity of 940 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 775 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 with good rate capability and long cycle performance. Moreover, Mo 2 C/C also exhibits an enhanced electrocatalytic performance with a low overpotential for HER in both acidic and alkaline conditions, as well as remarkable stability.

Construction of an FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 monolith electrocatalyst with an increased number of active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity toward water oxidation

Huanyu Chen,Jia-Qi Bai,Yuxue Wei,Jingshuai Chen,Song Sun,Chang-Jie Mao

The exploration of high-efficiency and Earth-abundant electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, an ultrafine FeNi–Mo2C composite immobilized on the surface of SiO2 support is fabricated through annealing a mixture of Fe, Ni and Mo precursors and SiO2 nanospheres. The electronic structure of the FeNi alloy is tuned by combining with Mo2C, forming a hybrid architecture with enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites. The introduced SiO2 nanospheres reduce the nanoparticle size of the FeNi–Mo2C composite, further increasing the population of the surface electrochemically active sites. Benefiting from the compositional and structural merits, the FeNi-Mo2C@SiO2 electrocatalyst exhibits excellent OER behavior with a small overpotential of 180 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, an ultra-small Tafel slope of 11.0 mV dec−1, and good stability in alkaline media. The outstanding OER performance is attributed to the increased number and enhanced intrinsic activity of active sites due to the synergistic effect of each component. This study provides a promising way to design and develop an advanced electrocatalyst towards water oxidation.

Plant polyphenol-involved coordination assembly-derived Mo3Co3C/Mo2C/Co@NC with phase regulation and interface engineering for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalysis

Yu-Hang Zhao,Tao Zhang,Xiao-Feng Wang,Shao-Jie Li,Yu Pan,Yihan Wang,Xue-Zhi Song,Zhenquan Tan

The rational exploration of highly active and low-cost materials for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution is extremely imperative, but remains challenging as well. Transition metal carbides (TMCs) as highlighted electrocatalysts usually exhibit unsatisfactory activity and stability. In this work, we demonstrate a two-step strategy for electrocatalyst synthesis involving biomass-derived tannic acid (TA) and coordination assembly preparation followed by subsequent high-temperature carbonization. Interestingly, by simply controlling the feed amount of TA, heterostructured nitrogen-doped graphene-coated Mo3Co3C-based tri- and bi-component electrocatalysts (Mo3Co3C/Mo2C/Co@NC and Mo3Co3C/Co@NC) can be obtained with phase regulation and interface engineering. It is observed that the heterostructured materials possess more active sites than that of the TMC-excluding sample (Co@NC). Moreover, the tri-component Mo3Co3C/Mo2C/Co@NC may enhance the intrinsic activity at each active site due to the strong interaction at the Mo3Co3C/Mo2C interface. These advantages allow the Mo3Co3C/Mo2C/Co@NC catalyst to deliver superior electrocatalytic activity and favorable kinetics towards the HER, with a low overpotential of 211 mV and a Tafel slope of 96.0 mV dec−1. Furthermore, it has good long-term stability. This work provides new inspiration for heterostructured TMC-based electrocatalysts with high performance towards promising catalytic applications.
