Solar-driven photothermal conversion of dilute CO 2 into CH 4 offers a promising route toward carbon-neutral energy cycles, yet designing efficient catalysts for realistic low-concentration streams remains challenging. Herein, a yolk-shell structured nanoreactor composed of homogeneous Ni@NC units (denoted as Ni@NC-9 h) was fabricated via a time-controlled solvothermal and pyrolysis method. This unique architecture acts as a confined nanoreactor that integrates physical and chemical enrichment mechanisms: the internal cavity simultaneously enhances light harvesting and thermal localization via multiple scattering and increases local CO 2 coverage, while the homogeneously distributed nitrogen sites ensure efficient chemical trapping of dilute CO 2 . Under mild conditions (420 nm LED, 180 °C, 12.5% CO 2 , 86.9 mW·cm −2 ), the Ni@NC-9 h catalyst achieves a remarkable CH 4 production rate of 4.33 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 94.7% selectivity. Kinetic and in-situ DRIFTS insights uncover a photothermally reduced activation barrier that drives efficient stepwise hydrogenation through *COOH and *CO intermediates. This work provides insights into confinement-enhanced nanoreactor design and establishes a new structural paradigm for the efficient solar-driven upgrading of dilute CO 2 .

Efficient and durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts represent a cornerstone for high-energy-density rechargeable metal-air batteries. Herein, we report a facile one-step pyrolysis synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphite carbon-encapsulated Fe/Fe 3 C heterojunction nanoparticles (Fe/Fe 3 C@NC) with a well-defined core-shell architecture. The Fe/Fe 3 C heterojunction exhibits prominent interfacial electron transfer from Fe to Fe 3 C. This electron-rich Fe 3 C phase enables superior adsorption modulation toward oxygen intermediates, thereby endowing the catalyst with exceptional bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity. In alkaline media, Fe/Fe 3 C@NC outperforms platinum-group metal (PGM) benchmarks in both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), achieving a smaller OER/ORR overpotential difference than Pt/C + RuO 2 . When integrated into aqueous and flexible zinc-air batteries, Fe/Fe 3 C@NC maintains an impressive 92.6% of its initial round-trip efficiency (RTE) over 1900 h (5700+ cycles), far exceeding the PGM-based control (23.3% RTE decay within 50 h, 150 cycles). Structural characterizations confirm that Fe/Fe 3 C@NC retains its morphology and crystallinity after prolonged cycling, highlighting the critical role of the core-shell architecture in preserving structural/compositional integrity. This work not only elucidates the pivotal role of the Fe/Fe 3 C heterojunctions in enhancing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis but also provides a scalable carbon-encapsulation strategy for designing low-cost, high-performance, and long-lifespan non-noble metal bifunctional catalysts for next-generation metal-air batteries.

Designing efficient electrocatalysts with robust bifunctional activity for both HER/UOR is crucial for advancing energy-saving hydrogen production technologies. Therefore, in this study, ZIF-67 is selected as the precursor and the Ru-Co x P/NC nanocubes with a N-doped carbon network structure are successfully prepared through the carbonization-acid washing-anchoring-phosphating strategy. Experimental characterizations and electrochemical tests reveals that the introduction of Ru atoms onto Co x P/NC induces favorable local charge redistribution due to electronegativity differences, thereby facilitating both HER and UOR processes. Additionally, the three-dimensional N-doped carbon network not only enhances electrical conductivity by providing optimized electron transport pathways but also mitigates catalyst aggregation during reactions, improving atomic utilization efficiency of active sites and ensuring long-term material stability. Under alkaline conditions, the Ru-Co x P/NC catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with an exceptionally low HER overpotential of merely 46 mV and requires only 1.319 V vs. RHE for UOR. Moreover, it demonstrates stable operation for 100 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 . These findings demonstrate that this study provides a viable strategy for fabricating highly efficient electrocatalysts for energy-saving hydrogen production.

The employment of Co-based cocatalysts in BiVO4 (BVO) photoanodes is still suffering from inefficient hole transfer to active sites and sluggish charge kinetic processes. To address this issue, we designed a hierarchical dual-shell Co@Co3O4@NC (Co-DS) cocatalyst synthesized via the controlled pyrolysis of CoCo Prussian blue analogs under micro-oxygen conditions. The designed hierarchical structure consists of a graphitic carbon shell that encases the Co3O4 interlayer, which is abundant in OER-active sites, coupled with a metallic Co core that enhances hole accumulation and charge transfer across interfaces. The optimized Mo-BVO/Co-DS photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.95 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, representing a 129% enhancement over pristine BVO (2.16 mA/cm2). This work provides fundamental insights into the design principles of metal-oxide-based cocatalysts for overcoming efficiency limitations in photochemical water oxidation.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) poses a significant and persistent threat to groundwater due to its stability, high mobility, and carcinogenicity. Conventional permeable reactive barrier (PRB) fillers, like nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), face challenges including nanoparticle aggregation and passivation. To overcome these limitations, this study developed nitrogen-doped carbon-stabilized nZVI (nZVI@NC) using a scalable, solvent-free method combining mechanochemical ball-milling and pyrolysis. The synthesized core-shell nZVI@NC material effectively encapsulates nZVI within graphitic carbon, significantly improving its dispersion and reactivity (with an average crystallite size of 24.78 nm). A concentration of 100 mg/L of nZVI@NC adsorbed 83.5 % of PFOA within a 2-h timeframe, and the isotherms revealed an outstanding PFOA uptake capacity of 162 mg/g. Column experiments confirmed practical efficacy: using 50 mg nZVI@NC achieved complete PFOA removal (initial influent: 0.1 mg/L, Darcy velocity: 0.81 m/day) with no breakthrough for the first 1188 mL. Furthermore, a removal efficiency of 61.3 % was sustained in actual groundwater. Mechanistic studies (XPS, SEM-EDS, AIMD simulations) revealed a biphasic adsorption process: an initial rapid phase driven by physicochemical interactions, followed by a diffusion phase governed by pore embedding. This work establishes nZVI@NC as an efficient, scalable, and high-performance PRB filler for sustainable in situ remediation of PFOA-contaminated groundwater.

A 3D integrated hierarchical porous N-doped Sn/CNT@N C gas diffusion electrode is proposed via phase inversion to synergistically improve electron-proton-gas transfer and efficiency of CO 2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Hierarchical porous structure is tuned by the carbon nanotube additive during phase inversion, which integrates microporous layer and diffusion layer to decrease mass transfer resistance comparing with the 2D layer structure of commercial carbon paper . XPS results show that Sn/CNT@N C 800 contains pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen with catalytic activity. EIS and LSV curves show that Sn/CNT@N C 800 is beneficial to reduce mass transfer resistance and increase current density after twice hydrophobic treatments. As a result, Sn/CNT@N C 800 shows higher CO 2 RR electrocatalytic activity. The reaction rate and Faraday efficiency of CO at 12 mA cm −2 increase by 40.2% and 40.6%, respectively compared with Sn/carbon paper. The reaction rate and Faraday efficiency of formate are also slightly higher than those of Sn/carbon paper.

Transition metal phosphosulfides (TMPs) are compelling anode candidates for sodium-ion batteries thanks to their distinctive layered structure and outstanding electrochemical properties, yet facing significant intrinsic challenges including poor electronic conductivity and severe structural degradation. To address these issues, we demonstrate the construction of yolk-double-shell ZnPS 3 /N-doped carbon@carbon (ZnPS 3 /NC@C) polyhedra through a Kirkendall-effect-mediated tannic acid (TA) etching strategy using a resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) coated ZIF-8 precursor. This rationally designed architecture confers several synergistic advantages: (i) the N-doped carbon matrix derived from ZIF-8/TA-Zn and the carbon shell from RF form a continuous conductive network, facilitating rapid charge transfer; (ii) the yolk-double-shell framework with ample internal void space effectively accommodates the volume variations, preserving structural integrity; and (iii) the outer carbon shell serves as a physical barrier against polysulfide dissolution, enhancing reaction reversibility. Benefiting from this multi-synergistic engineering, the novel ZnPS 3 /NC@C anode exhibits impressive sodium storage performance, delivering a high charge/discharge capacity of 925.7/1128.9 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , along with a remarkable long-term cyclability with 96.9% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . This work establishes a generalizable design paradigm integrating morphological manipulation with multi-component compositing for developing advanced electrode materials.

Metal-nitrogen-doped carbon single-atom nanozymes (M − NC SAzymes) have tremendous prospects to replace natural enzymes for the treatment of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related diseases. However, developing a pyrolysis-free and universal synthesis of M − NC SAzymes with robust enzyme-mimicking activity still remains a challenge. Herein, a promising cytoprotective agent (Fe-NC SAzymes) with multiple enzyme-mimicking activities was fabricated based on the reaction of Schiff bases with Fe ions via one-pot solvothermal method. In Fe-NC SAzymes, Fe-N x moieties served as the main catalytic sites to mimick oxidase, peroxidase, and catalase; meanwhile, the co-catalytic sites of the π-conjugated nitrogen-doped carbon structure mimicked superoxide dismutase to achieve the multiple enzyme-mimicking catalysis. Owing to the dual catalytic sites and pyrolysis-free synthesis strategy, Fe-NC SAzymes showed enhanced catalytic performance and excellent biocompatibility, which could scavenge excessive intracellular ROS to alleviate oxidative stress. The viability of cells subjected to oxidative stress recovered from 1.4% to 80.3% after Fe-NC SAzymes treatment, demonstrating an outstanding cytoprotective performance. Remarkably, this synthetic strategy can be expanded to other metal-NC SAzymes (Cu, Mn, Co, Zn, and Ni), which provides a feasible route to design specific functional SAzymes for ROS-related diseases therapy.

MOF-derived metal-carbon composite catalyst was an alternative high-efficient catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In this study, a novel cobalt-carbon-nitrogen doped composite catalyst with honeycomb porous structure (Co-HPNC) was obtained through a simple strategy consisting of three steps: self-growth of ZIF-67 on the SiO 2 core, pyrolysis, and NaOH etching away SiO 2 core. The Co-HPNC exhibited an outstanding catalytic performance (98.1% in 10 min) to activate PMS for acid orange 7 (AO7) degradation. The observed reaction kinetic constant (0.4319 min −1 ) was 2.64 times superior to that of the unmodified Co/NC catalysis system (0.1636 min −1 ). In the meantime, the catalyst demonstrated a high PMS activation capacity over a wide pH range of 3–11 and strong adaptability to the high concentration of inorganic anions (Cl - , SO 4 2- , and CO 3 2– ). After being recycled three times, the removal efficiency could still reach 92.7% in 25 min. The quenching tests and EPR spectrum illustrated the existence of radical and non-radical pathways, in which singlet oxygen was dominant during the degradation process. It was hypothesized that Co(0)/Co(Ⅱ)/Co(Ⅲ), pyridinic-N and pyrrolic-N contributed to the generation of hydroxyl and sulfate radicals, while C=O functional group and graphitic-N were catalytic sites for singlet oxygen. Finally, the radical electrophilic attacking sites of AO7 were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT), and the degradation routes of AO7 were speculated by GC–MS. The toxicity test illustrated that the Co-HPNC/PMS system was an environmental-friendly technology for AO7 degradation. The prepared Co-HPNC with a unique honeycomb porous structure presents a novel synthesis route for MOF-derived catalyst applied in the PMS activation system for wastewater treatment.

The sustainable catalytic transformation of alcohols to high value-added fine chemicals is a significant and challenging research topic. Herein, a set of nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulated Co-based catalysts (Co-Co 3 O 4 @NC-T) were prepared by using low-cost dicyandiamide, glyoxal and cobalt nitrate as precursors. The obtained catalysts were utilized for the selective oxidation of alcohols to high value-added esters and carboxylic acids with air as the oxygen source and displayed wide applicability for the oxidation of both aromatic and aliphatic alcohols. Based on the controlled experiments, the protective effect of N-doped carbon structure and the synergistic effect between Co core and Co 3 O 4 species guaranteed the high reaction conversion and selectivity. Benefitting from heterogeneity and magnetism of the catalyst, it can be easily recycled and reused for long-term stability. Reasonable mechanisms of selective oxidation reaction were proposed through EPR analysis and controlled experiments. The present work provides a facile strategy for potential large-scale preparation of heterogeneous catalyst for sustainable and green catalytic transformations.

The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) that transforms CO 2 to CO has attracted great interest. Transition metal nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (M@NC) catalysts exhibit outstanding catalytic performance. However, the role of metal and N species in M@NC catalysts remains unclear. In this work, Co@C, Co@NC, Ni@C, and Ni@NC catalysts were achieved and employed in CO 2 RR. The Ni@NC catalyst exhibits an industry level current density of 220 mA cm −2 and a high Faradaic efficiency of 98% for CO production at − 0.87 V vs. RHE for 100 h. In addition, the N species, especially the pyrrolic-N in the shell of Ni@NC material provide active sites for adsorbing and activating CO 2 molecules, and metal nanoparticles improve the electronic structure of N species, thereby decreasing their ability for radical attack (*COOH, *CO, and *H). Consequently, this work can guide the design of M@NC catalyst for CO 2 RR to CO.

Supported single-atom catalytic materials (SACMs) have aroused extensive interest due to their remarkable properties. Herein, a novel method was proffered to prepare Co-NC SACMs using custom-designed N-doped carbon (NC) as support, CoCl 2 as the precursor in supercritical CO 2 with appropriate co-solvent. It was found that when ethanol was used as co-solvent, nanoparticles were obtained while only Co single-atom was obtained when N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) was used as co-solvent. Both the theoretical loading and the deposition time influenced the Co loading a lot, and the maximum Co loading was as high as 1.71 wt%. Strong acid, strong alkali, corrosive solvent, and high-temperature treatment were avoided in the whole process. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-HAADF-STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were conducted to confirm the existence and uniform distribution of Co atoms over the N-doped carbon materials. The conversion rate of 90.0% and selectivity of 86.0% were obtained for the solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde at 70 °C and 1 h using the Co-NC SACMs.
