Autologous skin flap transplantation is a common method for repairing complex soft tissue defects caused by cancer, trauma, and congenital malformations. Limited blood supply range and post-transplantation ischemia-reperfusion injury can lead to distal necrosis of the flap and long-term functional loss, which severely restricts the decision-making regarding the optimal surgical plan. To address this issue, we develop a hydrogel patch that releases carbon monoxide and nitric oxide gases on demand, to afford a timely blood supply for skin flap transplantation during surgery. Using an ischemia-reperfusion dorsal skin flap model in rats, we show that the hydrogel patch maintains the immediate opening of blood flow channels in transplanted tissue and effective blood perfusion throughout the perioperative period, activating perfusion of the hemodynamic donor site. We demonstrate that the hydrogel patch promotes distal vascularization and long-term functional reconstruction of transplanted tissues by inhibiting inflammatory damage and accelerating blood vessel formation.

Low-temperature (low-T) oxidation experiments of n -heptane –with and without NO addition– were experimentally and numerically investigated at stoichiometric conditions in a jet-stirred reactor. Experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure over a temperature range of 500–800 K. Reactants, intermediates, and products, were measured using synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry . A detailed kinetic model was developed to gain insight into the chemical effect of NO on low-T oxidation chemistry of n -heptane. Taking 650 K as the transition temperature, the results revealed that NO addition exhibited an inhibiting effect on fuel reactivity below 650 K and a promoting effect above 650 K. The reactions of ROO + NO = RO + NO 2 and HO 2 + NO = OH + NO 2 at different temperature regions were responsible for the inhibition and promotion effects, respectively. Evidence gathered from both experimental measurements and kinetic model predictions indicated that NO addition had a significant inhibitory effect on the formation of cool flame species during the low-T oxidation process. NO suppressed low-T oxidation via the reaction of ROO + NO = RO + NO 2 , which impeded the subsequent isomerization, O 2 addition, OH-, and HO 2 -elimination reaction, and influenced product distribution of the cool flame species. The experimental observations provided detailed information about these reactive intermediates, which offered new insights into low-T oxidation phenomena and clarified the importance of NO reactions which prevent the formation of cool flame products during low-T oxidation.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial gaseous medium for tumor growth and progression, but it may also cause mitochondrial disorder and DNA damage by drastically increasing its concentration in tumor. Due to its challenging administration and unpredictable release, NO based gas therapy is difficult to eliminate malignant tumor at low safe doses. To address these issues, herein, we develop a multifunctional nanocatalyst called Cu-doped polypyrrole (CuP) as an intelligent nanoplatform ( [email protected] ) to deliver the NO precursor BNN6 and specifically release NO in tumors. Under the aberrant metabolic environment of tumors, [email protected] catalyzes the conversion of antioxidant GSH into GSSG and excess H 2 O 2 into ·OH through Cu + /Cu 2+ cycle, which results in oxidative damage to tumor cells and the concomitant release of cargo BNN6. More importantly, after laser exposure, nanocatalyst CuP can absorb and convert photons into hyperthermia, which in turn, accelerates the aforesaid catalytic efficiency and pyrolyzes BNN6 into NO. Under the synergistic effect of hyperthermia, oxidative damage, and NO burst, almost complete tumor elimination is achieved in vivo with negligible toxicity to body. Such an ingenious combination of NO prodrug and nanocatalytic medicine provides a new insight into the development of NO based therapeutic strategies. Statement of significance A hyperthermia-responsive NO delivery nanoplatform ( [email protected] ) based on Cu-doped polypyrrole was designed and fabricated, in which CuP catalyzed the conversion of H 2 O 2 and GSH into ·OH and GSSG to induce intratumoral oxidative damage. After laser irradiation, hyperthermia ablation and responsive release of NO further coupled with oxidative damage to eliminate malignant tumors. This versatile nanoplatform provides new insights into the combined application of catalytic medicine and gas therapy.

In this study, NaClO2was selected as a denitration oxidant. In order to clarify the mechanism of NaClO2as an oxidation agent for NO removal efficiency, the effects of H+and other factors (NaClO2concentration, temperature, and the other gas) on the NO removal efficiency were investigated. NaClO2showed a promotional ability on NO removal, whose efficiency increased with the increase of NaClO2concentration. One hundred percent removal efficiency of NO could be achieved when the NaClO2concentration was 0.014 mol/L. Furthermore, raising the reaction temperature benefited the removal of NO. The lower the pH, the better the NO removal efficiency. The promoting effect of H+on the NO removal was studied by the Nernst equation, ionic polarization, and the generation of ClO2. Under the optimal conditions, the best removal efficiency of NO was 100%. Based on the experimental results, the reaction mechanism was finally speculated. Keywords:sodium chlorite (NaClO2);wet scrubbing;removal efficiency;NO reaction mechanism

Heteropoly acids (HPAs) have been effectively utilized in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO to improve the NH 3 absorption capacity and alkaline/alkali metal resistance for SCR catalysts. However, despite the promise on super-acidities, their other properties that would work on SCR process are still lack of exploration. In this study, a 12-tungstaphosphoric acid (H 3 PW 12 O 40 , HPW) was selected to modify a well-reported CeO 2 catalyst. The resulted CeO 2 /HPW catalyst was subsequently utilized for SCR of NO with excess NH 3 , which revealed a significantly promoted performance in SCR reaction. DRIFT analyses showed that the unique NO 2 absorption capacity of HPW could prevent the NO 2 being further oxidized into nitrate species and the abundant Brønsted acid sites could effectively retain the NH 3 , avoiding them being over-oxidized at evaluated temperatures. The presence of NO 2 was demonstrated able to induce a so called “fast SCR” reaction over the CeO 2 /HPW catalyst, which effectively facilitated the SCR reaction. Furthermore, we have also constructed a CeO 2 @HPW catalyst, which showed an enhanced SO 2 poisoning resistance in SCR reaction.

A novel Zr–CeVO4/TiO2 catalyst was developed for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. Both TiO2 nanosheets (TiO2-NS) and nanoparticles (TiO2-NP) with different crystal facets were used as supports for the catalyst. It was found that the TiO2-NS-supported catalyst showed much better activity, stability and H2O/SO2 durability than the TiO2-NP-supported catalyst. In particular, the catalyst loading amount was much lower than those of previously reported vanadate-based SCR catalysts. The crystal structures and morphologies were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and (high-resolution) transmission electron microscopy ((HR)TEM). The redox properties, surface active species and acid sites of the catalysts were investigated through hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ammonia and nitrogen oxide temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD and NOx-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTs) experiments. The improved activity at lower temperature was due to the presence of more active oxygen species and Brønsted acid sites, as well as the formation of NO2 on the surface of the TiO2 nanosheets which have exposed (001) facets. The enhanced stability and H2O/SO2 durability of Zr–CeVO4/TiO2-NS was due to the limited formation of NH4NO3 and (NH4)2SO4/NH4HSO4. The excellent low operation temperature, low vanadium content and absence of WO3(MoO3) in this catalyst indicated that it has promising potential as a SCR catalyst for practical applications.

Mimicking the movement of leaves in response to external stimulations is inspiring for designing photocatalyst system applicable in space- and weight-sensitive scenarios. Here, we demonstrate that by combining a novel gas–liquid film growth process with a tape assisted film transfer procedure driven by capillary force, a lightweight and twistable photocatalyst assembly can be easily constructed. Taking the gas–liquid interface as a solute transfer boundary to selectively trigger the film growth at the interface, BiOI and BiOI/In 2 O 3 thin films up to 15 cm in diameter can be grown at a solution surface. Thanks to the capillary force present at the dynamic contact front during the film pick-up procedure, the grown film can be peeled off from the solution surface with tape so that a lightweight BiOI/In 2 O 3 /tape assembly can be easily constructed. Due to its low density and the BiOI/In 2 O 3 heterojunction formed, the resulting BiOI/In 2 O 3 /tape assembly exhibits superior photocatalytic activity per gram towards NO removal. Furthermore, the capillary force driven film pick-up process also induces a tight contact between the film and the tape, which makes the assembly highly twistable: its structural integrity and photocatalytic activity are largely preserved after 10,000 twists. Utilizing the film’s flexibility and twistability, we assemble a temperature-, auto-folding/unfolding photocatalyst system by transferring the film onto a memory-alloy-based structure, which mimics the movement of leaves in response to external stimulations and makes the gas–liquid interface-derived BiOI/In 2 O 3 /tape assembly suitable for use in space- and weight-limited environments.

Electrocatalyst reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the industrial flue gas to synthesize NH3 can not only greatly improve the electrochemical efficiency of NH3 production, but also realize the emission reduction and resource utilization of air pollutants. Purposeful structural optimization of catalysts is a key research challenge in this field. Firstly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations found that the formation of surface oxygen vacancies could be promoted by constructing metal cation vacancies on the catalyst surface, which in turn optimized the NO adsorption configuration and improved the catalytic activity. By this guidance, CoAl layered double hydroxides (CoAl-LDH) nanosheets containing Al atomic vacancies were prepared by alkali etching. Experimental results show that a suitable alkali etching time with aqueous NaOH can significantly enhance the electrocatalytic activity of the CoAl-LDH nanosheets for NO reduction to NH3. Compared with pristine CoAl-LDH (0.097 mg cm-2 h-1), the NH3 yield rate reached 0.310 mg cm-2 h-1 at -1.1 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode after alkali etching for 4 h, which increased by 2.2 times. The catalyst characterization and theoretical calculation results indicate that the abundant frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) on the surface of catalysts containing cation vacancies are the origin of the enhanced activity.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by progressive alveolar bone resorption, and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a key factor to disease progression. Therefore, scavenging ROS to alleviate inflammation and promote bone regeneration are promising strategies to treat periodontitis. In this study, L-arginine (L-Arg) was used to modify mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG), forming L-Arg modified MBG (MBG@L-Arg), which showed effective ROS-scavenging and NO release properties in cells, and realize the protection and restoration of cell's activity in ROS-rich microenvironment. Furthermore, MBG@L-Arg can induce macrophage polarization from M1 to M2 phenotype, and promote the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells and human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). MBG@L-Arg also regulated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant systems by inhibiting the NF- κ B signaling pathway and activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway. Besides, NO-PKG signaling pathway was also activated, further promoting bone regeneration. The in vivo results demonstrated that MBG@L-Arg can efficiently inhibit inflammation-induced tissue destruction and promote osteogenesis regeneration. The quantitative bone loss in MBG@L-Arg group was 1.03 ± 0.05 mm, significantly lower than that of the periodontitis group (1.47 ± 0.13 mm), implying that MBG@L-Arg can work as multifunctional materials for periodontal tissue regeneration.

Developing highly efficient photocatalysts that selectively convert NO pollutants to NO 3 ¯ while storing metabolic nitrogen for crops remains a great challenge. Simultaneously, there is a dearth of research investigating the relationship between the chemical environment and the activity of catalytic sites. Herein, an efficient impregnation approach to access atomically dispersed Sr single atoms supported on Nb 2 O 5 is reported; meanwhile, various ligands (-Cl, -Br, -OH) are employed to customize the local structure. The results show that Cl-Sr/Nb 2 O 5 exhibits excellent catalytic performance in eliminating NO, which is significantly superior to other catalysts. The introduction of Sr atom and ligand increases the energy barrier of NO 2 formation, thus improving the selectivity of converting NO to NO 3 ¯. This study highlights the importance of precisely designing the catalytic site at the atomic level, and the obtained insights may serve as a valuable guide for developing future catalyst designs.

X-ray-excited photodynamic therapy (X-PDT) employs X-rays as an energy source, overcoming the light penetration limitations of traditional photodynamic therapy (PDT) but is constrained by high-energy radiation and the hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Low-dose X-ray-excited photodynamic therapy and reduction of mitochondrial oxygen consumption can serve as significant breakthroughs in overcoming these barriers. In this study, NaLuF4:Tb/Gd (15%/5%)@NaYF4 (ScNP) nanoparticles adsorbing the photosensitizer MC540 and loaded with α-(nitrate ester) acid (NEAA) were prepared as low X-ray dose triggered nano-scintillators. The final product obtained was NaLuF4:Tb/Gd (15%/5%)@NaYF4@mSiO2@MC540@NEAA (ScNP-MS@MC540@NEAA) nanocomposites, which exhibited intense green luminescence. X-PDT generates cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) with minimal ionizing radiation damage. Simultaneously, NEAA reacts with glutathione (GSH) to generate nitric oxide (NO) for gaseous treatment of the damaged mitochondrial respiratory chain to reduce oxygen consumption and alleviate hypoxia, enhancing the X-PDT efficacy and realizing a closed-loop treatment. The superoxide ions (˙O2−) can rapidly react with NO produced to form the highly cytotoxic reactive nitrogen species (RNS) peroxynitrite anion (ONOO−), which exhibits higher cytotoxicity compared to ROS. Furthermore, GSH scavenges toxic ROS and maintains the physiological function of tumor cells. It can induce cancer cell overoxidation and nitrosative stress. This work describes a low-dose X-ray-triggered X-PDT system with total radiation of 50 mGy, which involves GSH consumption, self-supplied NO, mitochondrial damage alleviation, and hypoxia relief to generate ROS and RNS, forming a closed-loop anti-hypoxia dual-mode system with synergistically enhanced anti-tumor effects, without significant biological side effects. It provides a promising platform for deep-seated tumor X-PDT with considerable application prospects.

As the ideal NO removal technology, the biggest challenge associated with the direct catalytic decomposition of NO is the development of highly active deNOx catalysts at low temperatures. Herein, a composite metal catalyst, Rh(0.2)/NC-MnFe, was prepared via impregnation for the low-temperature direct decomposition of NO, which exhibited 99.6% NO conversion and 63% N2 selectivity at 150 °C, and nearly 100% NO conversion and 98% N2 selectivity at 200 °C. The characterization results showed that the Rh(0.2)/NC-MnFe catalyst possessed a regular nanocage structure, good crystallinity, and suitable specific surface area. Its excellent low-temperature activity was attributed to the transfer of the dissociated O of NO from the Rh active site to the NC-MnFe support, which effectively inhibited the deactivation of Rh. The mechanism analysis indicated that NO adsorbed on the Rh(0.2)/NC-MnFe catalyst surface can generate NO2− and NO3−, and then the adsorbed NO together with NO3− is converted to NO2− species accompanied by the release of N2O. At last, NO2− is decomposed to N2.
