Ascorbic-acid-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of Pd-decorated WSe2 nanoflowers for high-performance NO2 gas sensing

Peicheng Han,Yunbo Shi,Canda Zheng,Bolun Tang,Qiaohua Feng

Green hydrothermal synthesis of flower-like WSe 2 using biodegradable ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. • Vacuum sintering at 450 ∘ ∘ C improved the crystallinity, surface activity, and charge transport of WSe 2 enhancing NO 2 sensing. • Optimal 3% Pd decoration enabled catalytic/interfacial sensitization, achieving a response of 2.26 toward 16 ppm NO 2 with good selectivity and stability. Although WSe 2 has shown great potential for NO 2 sensing, its development remains challenging because conventional hydrothermal synthesis often relies on hazardous reducing agents such as NaBH 4 and N 2 H 4 ⋅ 4⋅ H 2 O, which may cause rapid H 2 release, toxicity, and environmentally harmful byproducts. In addition, the sensing performance of WSe 2 is often limited by insufficient active sites and inefficient charge transfer. Herein, flower-like WSe 2 nanostructures were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route using benign, biodegradable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective C 6 H 8 O 6 as the reducing agent. The obtained WSe 2 was vacuum-sintered at the optimized temperature of 450 ∘ ∘ C and further decorated with Pd nanoparticles to enhance NO 2 sensing performance. The optimized 3% Pd-WSe 2 -450 ∘ ∘ C sensor exhibited a response ( R a / R g Ra/Rg ) of 2.26 toward 16 ppm NO 2 at an operating temperature of 114 ∘ ∘ C, with response and recovery times of 20 and 190 s, respectively. The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of Pd decoration, improved crystallinity, abundant surface oxygen species, and efficient interfacial charge modulation. This work demonstrates a Pd-modified WSe 2 -based NO 2 gas sensor, where green synthesis, vacuum sintering, and interfacial Pd engineering synergistically enhance the sensing performance. In-situ synthesized oxygen-vacancy-rich CuO nanosheet arrays for low-temperature ppb-level NO2 sensing

Mengyuan Ma,Lihao Lv,Kaixuan Yao,Ning Nan,Le Cui,Chun Li,Xiaofen Liu,Yuxin Bai,Chun-Sheng Zhou,Lingmin Yu

Developing a strategy to tailor the morphology and sensing properties of CuO nanosheets array for low-temperature, ppb-level selective Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection is of great significance as it represents a key step toward addressing challenges related to air quality improvement, human health protection, and environmental sustainability. In this work, CuO nanosheets were synthesized via a seed-induced hydrothermal in-situ method, which lead to a small thickness of 16.72 nm, and a high concentration of oxygen vacancies. The as-prepared CuO nanosheets exhibited a high response of 4.65 with short response and recovery times of 59 s and 72 s, respectively, toward 100 ppb NO2 at 75℃. The sensing mechanism was investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to elucidate the selectivity of NO2 over interfering gases. The in-situ grown CuO nanosheets (comparable to the Debye length) provided expanded reaction interfaces and efficient electron transport channels upon exposure to NO2, which facilitated enhanced interactions between the gas molecules and active sites, improving the sensing response. Moreover, the high concentration of oxygen vacancies acted as reactive centers that effectively reduced the reaction energy barrier, enabling ppb-level, highly sensitive, and selective NO2 detection at low operating temperatures. Overall, this work provides a new material for gas sensing, which promises advancements in high-performance, low-temperature NO2 sensors

Dual-template derived Ce-doped WO3 nanosheets with enhanced surface reactivity for low-temperature NO2 detection

Mengqi Zhen,Yuanyue Qie,Jiahao Li,Yuhua Zhen,Cuiping Jia,Yan Shan

Dual-template hydrothermal synthesis of high-area WO 3 nanosheets. • Ce doping tunes WO 3 with optimal NO 2 sensing at 3% doping level. • Fivefold higher response (189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150 °C) vs WO 3 . • Detection limit of 25 ppb with fast response/recovery (28/37 s). Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a hazardous air pollutant, necessitating the development of highly sensitive sensors operating at low temperatures. Herein, Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets with enhanced surface reactivity were fabricated via a dual-template hydrothermal strategy using PVP and P123. The dual-template approach enables the formation of uniform nanosheets with enlarged specific surface area and abundant accessible active sites, thereby boosting surface adsorption and reaction kinetics. Ce doping further tailors the surface and electronic structures by introducing abundant oxygen vacancies and defect levels that reduce the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, which enhances charge transfer and adsorption capability. As a result, the 3% Ce-WO 3 sensor exhibits optimal performance at 150°C, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 , nearly five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 , along with a low detection limit of 25 ppb, excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the synergistic effects of dual-template-derived surface reactivity and Ce-induced electronic modulation reduce the activation energy from 0.57 to 0.31 eV, thereby facilitating NO 2 adsorption and surface redox reactions at low temperatures. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance gas sensors for low-temperature NO 2 detection. Download: Download high-res image (91KB) Download: Download full-size image In summary, we have successfully synthesized Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets via a dual-template hydrothermal method and systematically investigated their NO 2 sensing performance. Among the investigated samples, the sensor with 3% Ce doping exhibited the optimal NO 2 sensing performance, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150°C, which is approximately five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 under identical conditions. In addition, a low detection limit of 25 ppb was achieved, along with rapid response and recovery times of 28 s and 37 s, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveals that Ce doping introduces abundant surface oxygen vacancies, narrows the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, and shifts the Fermi level upward, as confirmed by XPS, UV-Vis, and Mott-Schottky measurements. These electronic structure modifications significantly reduce the activation energy and promote surface redox kinetics, thereby enabling highly efficient NO 2 detection at relatively low operating temperatures. This work demonstrates that rare-earth doping, combined with rational morphology engineering, is an effective strategy for regulating the electronic structure and surface properties of WO 3 , providing a promising approach for the development of high-performance gas sensors for next-generation environmental monitoring applications.

Wireless Wearable MOF-Based NH3 Gas Sensor Patch with a Zeolite Overlayer for Suppressing NO2 Interference

Yueru Jiang,Yu Wang,Tianshuang Wang,Liupeng Zhao,Dan Li,Xueying Kou,Peng Sun,Geyu Lu

Recent advances in flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) films have injected momentum into the development of wearable gas sensors. However, current MOF-based wearable sensors suffer from mutual interference and often compromise in power consumption and wearing comfort, limiting their suitability for skin-interfaced applications. Here, we report a wireless, battery-free, wearable gas sensor patch based on a flexible inductance-capacitance (LC) resonator. This sensor features a bilayer flexible film composed of a 2D bimetallic Cu/Co-HHTP conjugate MOF (c-MOF) sensing layer and a Pd/SSZ-13 zeolite overlayer. Specifically, the zeolite overlayer functions as an NO2-adsorbing interface that captures incoming NO2 molecules, thereby preventing them from reacting with the underlying 2D c-MOF sensing layer. Accordingly, the wireless sensor achieves linear and interference-resistant detection of low concentrated NH3 even in the presence of NO2, while maintaining excellent mechanical flexibility, cyclic stability, and negligible baseline drift, exhibiting less than 6.2% response attenuation after repeated bending at 120°. The performance of the device is further validated through a skin-adherent, wireless, passive sensing system capable of continuous NH3 monitoring in complex environments. The proposed wireless wearable MOF-based sensor patch is highly transformative, offering benefits for various wearable applications. Device performance under high-humidity conditions is still constrained, indicating that further optimization is necessary.

Highly selective room temperature NO2 detection via π-back bonding in CuTPP-functionalized conductive polymer sensors

Jiyuan Xue,Bingcheng Shen,Juan Wang,Juan Li,Hongran Zhao,Tong Zhang

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), primarily emitted from transportation and industrial activities, poses significant threats to human health and environmental safety. However, reliable, repeatable, highly selective, and sensitive detection of NO 2 at room temperature remains challenging. In biological systems, metalloporphyrins are well known for their essential roles in gas transport, storage, and as catalytic centers in enzymatic redox reactions, demonstrating highly refined molecular recognition capabilities. Inspired by these unique gas-metal porphyrin interactions, we incorporated copper tetraphenylporphyrin (CuTPP) into a conductive polymer composite consisting of polyaniline (PANI) and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) to construct a high-performance NO 2 sensor operating at room temperature. Upon exposure to NO 2 , Cu 2 ⁺ ions in CuTPP selectively adsorb NO 2 via a non-classical π-back bonding mechanism, which not only ensures high selectivity but also significantly facilitates charge transfer pathways centered around CuTPP, greatly enhancing electron extraction from PANI. For sensor recovery, ultraviolet (UV) was employed to promote the desorption of NO 2 . The developed sensor exhibits excellent linearity (R 2 > 0.97) within an NO 2 concentration range of 0.2–1 ppm, and achieves a theoretical detection limit of approximately 0.4 ppb, suitable for monitoring concentrations of NO 2 in environmental settings. By exploiting the non-classical π-back bonding interaction between CuTPP and NO 2 within a conductive polymer matrix, our approach provides a versatile and low-power strategy for precise NO 2 detection, with potential applications in environmental monitoring and assessment.

Room Temperature Sub-ppm NO2 Gas Sensor Based on Ag/SnS2 Heterojunction Driven by Visible Light

Ding Gu,Jun Dong,Wei Liu,Xiaogan Li

As industrial waste gas, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a serious hazard to air pollution and human health, and there is a pressing demand for developing high-performance NO2gas sensors. Tin disulfide (SnS2), a representative two-dimensional metal sulfide characterized by a significant specific surface area, a suitable electron band gap, and an easily tunable layered structure, shows a broad application prospect in gas sensing applications. Nevertheless, SnS2-based gas sensors suffer from poor sensitivity, which seriously hinders their application in room temperature gas sensing. In this study, Ag/SnS2heterojunction nanomaterials were synthesized by an in situ reduction approach. The findings reveals that the gas-sensitive response of the Ag/SnS2nanocomposites at room temperature under visible light irradiation can achieve 10.5 to 1 ppm NO2, with a detection limit as low as 200 ppb, which realizes the room-temperature detection of Sub-ppm NO2. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits good selectivity, reproducibility (cyclic stability > 95%). The improved gas sensitivity of the Ag/SnS2sensor can be due to the synergistic effect of the carrier separation at the Ag/SnS2Schottky junction and the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles. The LSPR effect significantly enhances light absorption and surface-active site density, facilitating trace NO2detection at room temperature. This study provides the foundation for the subsequent development of room temperature layered metal sulfide gas sensors.

Extremely Fast Reaction of Criegee-Intermediate-Derived Organic Peroxides with NO2 at the Air–Liquid Interface

Xiangyu Zhang,Junting Qiu,Shinichi Enami,Xinming Wang

The heterogeneous chemistry of NOx in the atmosphere remains incompletely understood, and NOx potentially undergoes chemical reactions with organic peroxides (OPs) in the condensed phase. Here, we present a new experimental approach to directly quantify apparent rate constants (kapp) for reactions of Criegee-intermediate-derived OPs with NO2 and NO at the air–liquid interface. Using OPs derived from representative terpenoids (α-pinene,d-limonene, β-caryophyllene, and α-terpineol), we show that all OPs react extremely rapidly with NO2, while exhibiting much lower reactivity toward NO. The measured interfacial rate constants for OP + NO2 are approximately 3 orders of magnitude larger than those for OP + NO, consistent with preferential NO2 adsorption at the interface. At atmospherically relevant NO2 levels (1 ppb), OP lifetimes are reduced to the subsecond time scale, indicating that NO2 can dominate OP removal under elevated NOx conditions. These findings highlight the importance of interfacial NO2 chemistry in controlling the fate of Criegee-intermediate-derived OPs in the atmosphere.

Flexible and transparent sensors for ultra-low NO2 detection at room temperature under visible light illumination

Xiao-Xue Wang,Hua-Yao Li,Xin Guo

Metal oxide based gas sensors should mostly work at high temperatures; the high working temperature is associated with safety concerns and high energy consumption, which makes portable and wearable devices almost impossible, and the inhomogeneous temperature distribution over a sensor also has a detrimental effect on the device performance. However, all the above problems can be effectively resolved by using visible light-excited sensors working at room temperature. By depositing an array of well-aligned In2O3 nanowires on polyimide (PI) substrates, we fabricate flexible and transparent sensors that achieve room temperature gas sensing using visible light as the excitation source. The detection limit to NO2 is as low as 10 ppb under illumination using both monochromatic (blue) and polychromatic (white) light sources. The sensing performance remains consistent after repetitive bending and long-term operation. Remarkably, the sensor exhibits recoverable response to 500 ppb NO2 even under the illumination of an iPhone screen with a low irradiance of 0.56 W m−2. Through a systematic study of the interaction between the photoelectric and gas sensing properties of the materials, we also explore the mechanism of photo-induced gas sensing reactions at room temperature. This work will lay the foundation for gas sensors that can be used in portable and wearable devices.

Immobilization of uranium by S-NZVI and UiO-66-NO2 composite through combined adsorption and reduction

Di Zhang,Hao Tang,Bing Zhao,Lijie Liu,Hongwei Pang,Xiangxue Wang,Shujun Yu

Radioactive uranium removal plays a key role in energy development and environmental security. Sulfide nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-NZVI) has good antioxidant capacity, dispersibility and activity to eliminate U(VI) from wastewater, but the removal efficiency is limited. To improve the reduction and adsorption capacity of S-NZVI, through treating Fe 3+ solution by nitro-functionalized UiO-66 (UiO-66-NO 2 ) with high porosity, UiO-66-NO 2 enhanced S-NZVI adsorbent (S-NZVI/UiO-66) was prepared by liquid phase reduction method. The smaller size and larger specific surface area of S-NZVI/UiO-66 were confirmed by a variety of characterization techniques. Based on the excellent surface structure and reactivity, the U(VI) removal capacity of S-NZVI/UiO-66 (895 mg g −1 ) was much better than S-NZVI (434 mg g −1 ) and UiO-66-NO 2 (267 mg g −1 ). The impacts of pH, background ion strength, coexisting ions and different water environments on adsorption were studied via macroscopic batch experiments. The results showed that S-NZVI/UiO-66 could remove U(VI) adequately in a wide pH range. The removal rate was basically not affected by the concentration of NaNO 3 , demonstrating that the adsorption process of U(VI) on S-NZVI/UiO-66 tended to inner surface complexation. From XPS technique combined with the results of batch adsorption experiments, it was clear that the elimination mechanisms of U(VI) by S-NZVI/UiO-66 were mainly the physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction and complexation of UiO-66-NO 2 , and the reduction and complexation of S-NZVI. Therefore, it is believed that S-NZVI/UiO-66 has a great potential to be an excellent adsorbent in the field of the environment remediation. Moreover, S-NZVI/UiO-66 promises to be a novel nanomaterial for solving the problem of radionuclide contamination in practical environments.

Baohui Zhang,Chong Li,Min Li,Chen Fu,Ran Tao,Honglang Li,Jingting Luo

Nitrogen dioxide is one origin of air pollution from fossil fuels with the potential to cause great harm to human health in low concentrations. Therefore, low-cost, low-power-consumption sensors for low-concentration NO2detection are essential. Herein, heterojunction by SnO2quantum wires, a traditional metal oxide NO2sensing material, and Ti3C2TxMXene, a novel type of 2D layered material, was synthesized using a simple solvothermal method for enhancing gas-sensing performance and reducing operating temperature. The operating temperature was reduced to 80 °C, with a best performance of 27.8 and a fast response and recovery time (11 s and 23 s, respectively). The SnO2and Ti3C2TxMXene composite exhibits high speed and low detection limit due to the construction of the heterojunction with high conductive Ti3C2TxMXene. The selectivity and stability of gas sensors are carried out. This could enable the realization of fast response, high-sensitivity, and selective NO2sensing under low operating temperatures.Keywords:Ti3C2TxMXene;SnO2;gas sensor;NO2;nanocomposite

Design of nanoneedles-studded nanosheets on cactus-like Mo-WO3 nanoarchitecture for boosted NO2 sensing performance

Lifeng Han,Yuheng Liu,Chaoqun Chang,Meng Liu,Zhikun Peng,Feilong Gong

We reported the design of cactus-like Mo-WO 3 nanoarchitecture assembled of 1D nanoneedles and 2D nanosheets for achieving a highly improved NO 2 sensing performance. The nanoneedles were vertically studding between the nanosheets forming a cactus-like WO 3 nanoarchitecture, leading to highly exposed absorption sites. Mo was introduced in the WO 3 nanoarchitecture to introduce oxygen vacancy, resulting in highly activated sites. The resultant 2%Mo-WO 3 delivered the sensitivity (Rg/Ra) of 285 to 10 ppm NO 2 , which was nearly three-times higher than that of pristine WO 3 . The recovery time was only 24 s, which was greatly decreased, compared with 172 s of pristine WO 3 .

Effect of Diesel Soot on the Heterogeneous Reaction of NO2 on the Surface of γ-Al2O3

Chao Wang,Lingdong Kong,Shengyan Jin,Lianghai Xia,Jie Tan,Yuwen Wang

Soot and aged soot are often found to be mixed with atmospheric particles, which inevitably affect various atmospheric heterogeneous reactions and secondary aerosol formation. Previous studies have investigated the heterogeneous reaction of NO2with different types of soot, but there are few studies on the heterogeneous reaction of NO2with mixtures containing diesel soot (DS) or aged DS and mineral dust particles. In this study, the effects of DS and aged DS on the heterogeneous reaction of NO2on the surface of γ-Al2O3were investigated via in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectrometry (DRIFTS). The results showed that the DS or DS n-hexane extract significantly inhibited the formation of nitrate on γ-Al2O3particles and promoted the formation of nitrite. At 58% RH, with the increase of DS or DS n-hexane extract loading amount, the effect of DS or DS n-hexane extract on the formation of nitrate changed from promotion to inhibition, but DS or DS n-hexane extract always promoted the formation of nitrite. The results also showed that light was conducive to the formation of nitrate on the DS-γ-Al2O3or DS-n-hexane extract-γ-Al2O3particles. Furthermore, the influence of soot aging on the heterogeneous reaction of NO2was investigated under light and no light. In the dark, O3-aged DS-γ-Al2O3or O3-aged DS-n-hexane extract-γ-Al2O3firstly inhibited the formation of nitrate on the mixed particles and then promoted it, while the effect of aged DS on nitrite formation was complex. Under light, the O3-aged DS-γ-Al2O3firstly promoted the formation of nitrate on the mixed particles and then inhibited it, while the O3-aged DS-n-hexane extract-γ-Al2O3promoted the formation of nitrate on the mixed particles. Our results further showed that the production of nitrate on the O3-aged particles under light or no light was greater than that of the UV-nitrate-aged particles. This study is helpful to deeply understand the atmospheric chemical behavior of soot and the heterogeneous conversion of atmospheric NO2.Keywords:soot;NO2;heterogeneous reaction;aged soot;γ-Al2O3
