Techniques for detecting glucose are developing at a breathtaking speed because diabetes mellitus can cause many serious complications, such as blindness, high blood pressure heart disease and kidney failure. Herein, water soluble NaYF 4 :Eu 3+ @Ag core-shell nanocrystals for glucose detection with lower detection limit have been successfully developed, using NaYF 4 :Eu 3+ cores as the energy donors and Ag shells as the efficient quenchers through energy transfer. After immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) on the surface of NaYF 4 :Eu 3+ @Ag core-shell nanocrystals, the Ag shells can be decomposed in the presence of glucose, accompanied by down-shifting luminescence recovery. The limit of detection of NaYF 4 :Eu 3+ @Ag was 0.12 μmol L −1 . Therefore, the NaYF 4 :Eu 3+ @Ag can be easily extended to the detection of a variety of H 2 O 2 -involved analytes.

Core–shell structured up-conversion luminescent and mesoporous NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@nSiO2@mSiO2 nanospheres were prepared by coating mesoporous SiO2 layers with different thicknesses on NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles via a simple two-step sol–gel process. The obtained sample shows a typical mesoporous structure and well-dispersed spherical morphology with a narrow size distribution. The nanospheres exhibit little cytotoxicity (via MTT assay), and ibuprofen (IBU) was used as a model drug to access the release properties of the system in detail. The amount of IBU adsorbed in mesoporous channels increases with the thickness of the ordered mesoporous silica shell coated on the NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles. The in vitro release study of IBU reveals a release profile in two steps: an initial diffusion-controlled release, followed by a slower release rate. Furthermore, upon excitation by a 980 nm near-infrared laser, the nanospheres emit green (2H11/2 and 4S3/2 → 4I15/2) and red (4F9/2 → 4I15/2) fluorescence of Er3+ even after the loading of IBU. Interestingly, the emission intensity of Er3+ in the bifunctional (mesoporous and luminescence) drug carrier increases with an increase of the cumulative released amount of the model drug (IBU). Thus, the extent of drug release can be easily identified, tracked, and monitored based on the change of the up-conversion luminescence. These results suggest that the core–shell structured NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@nSiO2@mSiO2 nanospheres are a promising material for controlled drug release.

Monodisperse β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ (NYF) hexagonal microplates with efficient near-infrared (NIR)-to-NIR up-conversion (UC) developed via a new ion-exchange modified hydrothermal method are reported. Ion exchange modification (IEM) not only significantly increases the UC intensity by up to 1000 times and prolongs the emission lifetimes of Tm3+ and Yb3+, but also enables the monodisperse morphology and size of hexagonal microplates to be maintained. A high UC quantum efficiency (QE) of 3.1% is obtained for IEM β-NaYF4:20%Yb3+,1%Tm3+ when excited with 980 nm light at a power density of 10 W cm−2. The UC emission properties can be finely tailored by changing the NaF/NYF molar ratio (NYF represents lanthanide doped β-NaYF4) and the doping concentration of Tm3+. The two photon NIR UC emission centered at ∼803 nm (arising from Tm3+: 3H4 → 3H6) dominates the UC emission spectrum and high concentrations of Tm3+ favor NIR UC further. A proof-of-concept optical image of printed patterns is demonstrated to verify their applications in security. These results suggest the promising applications of the newly developed monodisperse β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ hexagonal microplates in security, luminescent labels, solid-state lasers, amplifiers, and biomedicine.

Introducing upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) onto photoanode films is an effective way to enhance the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this contribution, the β -NaYGdF 4 :Yb, Er UCNPs and β -NaYGdF 4 :Yb,Er@SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by tuning the dopant contents of the Gd ions and the β -NaYGdF 4 :Yb,Er@SiO 2 NPs were applied as an upconverting layer in DSSCs. Upconversion photoluminescence indicates that the UCNPs doped with 5% Gd ions exhibit the strongest green and red fluorescence emissions . Moreover, the DSSCs device incorporating the NPs with 5% Gd ion dopant can achieve an optimal photovoltaic efficiency of 5.89%, which is 20.20% enhancement in comparison to the device without NPs and 16.17% increasement with respect to the device containing β -NaYF 4 :Yb,Er@SiO 2 nanocrystals , thus highlighting the effect of the doping of the Gd ions in nanoparticles on their upconversion photoluminescence and photoelectric performance. Accordingly, the current results offer a feasible strategy for further regulating the photoluminescence property of UCNPs and optimizing the photovoltaic performance of UCNPs-based DSSCs devices.

A series of glasses with composition 60NaPO3–(40-x)CdF2–xYF3–yEr2O3 were synthesized via melt-quenching methods and subsequently heat-treated to obtain upconversion luminescent glass ceramics containing NaYF4:Er crystals. Hexagonal and/or cubic NaYF4 crystals were controlled to be bred in the glasses by changing the glass composition. The structure evolution driven by crystallization was characterized using advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) techniques. The SSNMR results reveal that the Y/Na ratio determines the crystalline phases of NaYF4 precipitated in this glass system. Y3+ attracts extra F– ions from P5+ and Cd2+ during crystallization because of its stronger ability to attract F– ions, leading to most Y3+ ions being crystallized into the NaYF4 crystals. The paramagnetic broadening effect of the Er3+ ions on NMR signals as well as the upconversion luminescence results indicate that, before crystallization, most Er3+ ions are surrounded by oxygen within the glasses; however, after crystallization, almost all of them enter the NaYF4 crystals. On the basis of this local structure investigation, a composition design strategy is developed to obtain highly efficient upconversion luminescent glass ceramics.

To date, the white light lanthanide upconvertion consisting of RGB components usually originated from more than one type of emitter. Alternatively, Pr 3+ is a fascinating lanthanide ion featuring multiple visible emission bands, including RGB components that in principle enable Pr 3+ to emit white light. In this paper, we report, for the first time to our knowledge, white light upconversion through dual sensitization routes in Nd/Yb/Pr triply doped NaYF 4 microrods upon 800 nm excitation. It is found that the dual sensitization is more efficient than single sensitization for Pr 3+ upconversion. In addition, the temperature sensing behaviors of the proposed triply doped microrods are comparatively investigated using different emission bands. This work presents a novel white light emitting material upon 800 nm excitation, and further demonstrates the feasibility of multichannel thermometry using the proposed material.

In order to further improve the luminescence of NaYF 4 :Yb,Er, we successfully constructed pitaya-like Cs 0 · 3 WO 3 @NaYF 4 :Yb, Er particles, in which Cs 0 · 3 WO 3 particles were encapsulated in NaYF 4 :Yb, Er particles. This structure enhanced the intensity of 407, 527, 542 and 657 nm emission peaks by 10.1, 5.9, 5.5 and 1.8 times, respectively. Through calculated, the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates changed from (0.28, 0.71) to (0.25, 0.73), indicating that the emission colour was tuned from yellow to green. The construction mechanism of this structure and the mechanism of upconversion (UC) luminescence enhancement were discussed. By studying the different luminescence mechanisms of NaYF 4 :Yb, Er excited by 1550 and 980 nm laser, we found that the UC luminescence enhancement and colour tuning of NaYF 4 :Yb, Er were due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Cs 0 · 3 WO 3 , which can absorb more excited photons and transfer them to the Er 3+ ion 4 I 11/2 level. Given that the transition process of green light emission is easier than red light emission, the redundant photons are more inclined to achieve emitting green light and show UC luminescence enhancement and emission colour tuning. Overall, the as-prepared novel pitaya-like Cs 0 · 3 WO 3 @NaYF 4 :Yb, Er particles exhibit strong UC luminescence enhancement and colour tuning, thus having great application prospect in the field of luminescent displays.

The presence of manganese ions (Mn 2+ ) in Yb/Er-co-doped nanomaterials results in suppressing green (545 nm) and enhancing red (650 nm) upconversion (UC) emission, which can achieve single-red-band emission to enable applications in bioimaging and drug delivery. Here, we revisit the tunable multicolor UC emission in a single Mn 2+ -doped β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Er microcrystal which is synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. Excited by a 980 nm continuous wave (CW) laser, the color of the single β-NaYF 4 :Yb/Er/Mn microrod can be tuned from green to red as the doping Mn 2+ ions increase from 0 to 30 mol%. Notably, under a relatively high excitation intensity, a newly emerged emission band at 560 nm ( 2 H 9/2 → 4 I 13/2 ) becomes significant and further exceeds the traditional green (545 nm) emission. Therefore, the red-to-green (R/G) emission intensity ratio is subdivided into traditional (650 to 545 nm) and new (650 to 560 nm) R/G ones. As the doped Mn 2+ ions increase, these two R/G ratios are in lockstep with the same tunable trends at low excitation intensity, but the tunable regions become different at high excitation intensity. Moreover, we demonstrate that the energy transfer (ET) between Mn 2+ and Er 3+ contributes to the adjustment of R/G ratio and leads to tunable multicolor of the single microrod. The spectroscopic properties and tunable color from the single microrod can be potentially utilized in color display and micro-optoelectronic devices.

Rare-earth ion (RE3+) doped up-conversion (UC) fluorescent materials and novel fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) have been widely used as traditional anti-counterfeiting materials owing to their excellent optical properties. The drawbacks of these materials are being exposed gradually with the widespread occurrence of counterfeit products in the market because of their single fluorescence mode and easy replication. In this work, we propose a novel strategy to combine both luminescent materials with different modes via a facile solvothermal method. Interesting, the composite materials show unalterable down-conversion (DC) blue light under a 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) analyzer, except for adjustable UC luminescence properties. The UC and DC optical properties are measured and the probable mechanism is proposed, indicating that the dual-mode fluorescence processes are separate and do not interference with each other. Moreover, we use a mixture containing a small number of UCMPs/CDs and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) aqueous solution as a colorless anti-counterfeiting ink, and successfully print a variety of dual-mode fluorescence patterns through the screen printing technique, including QR codes, the logo of Wuhan University, and clover patterns. The composite materials show good dispersion and outstanding dual-mode fluorescence properties, suggesting that they are promising luminescent materials in the anti-counterfeiting field.

Up-conversion materials can be applied in anti-counterfeit fields because of their high concealment and high up-conversion fluorescence efficiency. Herein, different lanthanide ions-doped β-NaYF4 up-conversion micro-particles (UCMPs) with uniform hexagonal morphology were synthesized on a large-scale (more than 0.5 g) via a facile hydrothermal method. It is very interesting to find out the fluorescence intensity and the eventual morphology of the UCMPs were highly dependent on the reaction conditions. Then, the optimal UCMPs with uniform morphology and strong fluorescence intensity were selected as promising candidates for preparing ink. Eventually, we successfully printed designable and multicolor fluorescent patterns on flexible substrates (common paper and polyethylene terephthalate, PET) using the as-prepared β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/Er3+/Eu3+ UCMPs inks. Under ambient conditions, the printed patterns on conventional paper are invisible, while such printed patterns on PET are white. However, all the patterns could display blue, yellow-green and green fluorescence patterns under the irradiation of a 980 nm laser when using the β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/Er3+/Eu3+ UCMPs inks. We envision that the UCMPs fluorescent inks-based flexible and rapid screen printing patterns have enormous potential for anti-counterfeit and security applications.

Long wavelength luminescent NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles that were synthesized and modified with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were used to detect sulfide ions. The NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles were synthesized to give an emission peak in the red-light region. When the carboxyl-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles and cupric ions (Cu2+) were mixed, the luminescence was quenched because of coordination between the carboxyl of PAA and Cu2+. However, when sulfide ions were added into the system, due to the competitive binding between S2− and Cu2+, the luminescence of the NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaGdF4 core–shell upconversion nanoparticles was recovered. Based on the recovery of the luminescence intensity, a turn-on system for the detection of sulfide ions was designed. Under optimal conditions, the linear range for the detection of sulfide ions ranged from 2.63 × 10−2 to 2.25 × 102 μM (R = 0.99) with a limit of detection for sulfide ions as low as 2.20 × 10−2 μM. The method was successfully applied to sulfide ion sensing in different environments.

Using nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as the capping agent, β -NaYF 4 upconversion microcrystals (UCMCs) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal synthesis method. Systematic investigations were conducted to evaluate the influence of NTA/Ln molar ratio, NaF/Ln molar ratio, and pH on the morphology, size, and crystal phase characteristics of the UCMCs. Multiple characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), were employed to elucidate these effects. The experimental findings reveal that these parameters exert a substantial influence on the morphology and size of the UCMCs, with the crystal phase alterations primarily governed by variations in the NaF/Ln molar ratio. Furthermore, a comprehensive exploration of the growth mechanism of UCMCs was undertaken based on the modulation of reaction time. The emission spectra of the synthesized UCMCs were meticulously investigated, unveiling that microcrystals exhibiting larger size and enhanced crystallinity display more pronounced luminescent properties. Comparative analysis with UCMCs synthesized using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sodium citrate (Na 3 Cit) as capping agents, which are extensively applied in diverse fields, demonstrated the superior luminescence properties of the newly obtained NTA-UCMCs. In addition, NTA-UCMCs were also employed for the fabrication of transparent and flexible fluorescent films. This research thus presents a novel approach for the synthesis of highly luminescent UCMCs, holding promise for various applications in practical contexts.
