MOFs attracted considerable attention as morphology templates and constitution precursors for synthesis of multiple functional nanocomposites due to their diverse and robust framework structure. In this work, a nickel-phosphide@carbon (Ni 2 P@C) composite with unique nanorod array morphology was synthesized via a facile phosphorization process using Ni(II)-zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67-Ni) as the precursor. And the effect of phosphorization temperature on the morphology and structure of the products were carefully investigated. The products obtained under different phosphorization temperature were utilized as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results showed that Ni 2 P@C nanorod array achieved under the phosphorization temperature of 400 °C demonstrated the highest electrocatalytic activity toward HER in 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution with a low overpotential of 186 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Also, high catalytic durability and chemical stability of the Ni 2 P@C nanorod array for HER were achieved. Combing the morphology and structure characterization experiments, the reason for high HER performance of Ni 2 P@C nanorod array obtained at the phosphorization temperature of 400 °C was discussed. This work provides a new guidance for the synthesis of high-performance MOFs-derived electrocatalyst for electrochemical HER.

To develop earth-abundant and cost-effective catalysts for overall water splitting is still a major challenge. Herein, a unique “raisins-on-bread” Ni–S–P electrocatalyst with NiS and Ni 2 P nanoparticles embedded in amorphous Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets is fabricated on Ni foam by a facile and controllable electrodeposition approach. It only requires an overpotential of 120 mV for HER and 219 mV for OER to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH solution. Employed as the anode and cathode , it demonstrates extraordinary electrocatalytic overall water splitting activity (cell voltage of only 1.58 V @ 10 mA cm −2 ) and ultra-stability (160 h @ 10 mA cm −2 or 120 h @50 mA cm −2 ) in alkaline media . The synergetic electronic interactions, enhanced mass and charge transfers at the heterointerfaces facilitate HER and OER processes. Combined with a silicon PV cell, this Ni–S–P bifunctional catalyst also exhibits highly efficient solar-driven water splitting with a solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 12.5%.

Single-crystalline dinickel phosphide (Ni2P) nanowires with a uniform diameter of about 8 nm and lengths of 100–200 nm were synthesized from the thermal decomposition of continuously delivered Ni-TOP complexes using a syringe pump. These Ni2P nanowires deliver specific reversible capacities of 434 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C, 326 mA h g−1 at 0.5 C after 50 cycles, and also exhibit good rate performance. The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the small size and stable cylindrical structure, which result in a high interfacial contact area with the electrolyte, and relieve the strain or accommodate volume expansion/contraction of these Ni2P nanowires. Electrochemical impedance spectra confirms that these Ni2P nanowires possess enhanced electrical conductivity, which facilitates the lithium ion and electron transportation in the electrode.

It is very attractive to find a cheap and efficient cocatalyst for enhancing the H 2 generation of graphitic carbon nitride (CN) under visible light. To achieve that, we proposed a novel two-step method to deposit sub-10 nm metallic Ni 2 P particles on the surface of CN sheets for a maximized interfacial contact. Characteristic results confirmed the establishment of ohmic heterojunction upon Ni 2 P-modification of CN, which deemed to be an effective measure to alleviate photo-charges recombination. In addition to facilitating spatial separation of charges, Ni 2 P could also enhance the optical properties of CN while reducing its impedance for interfacial electron shuttling. Better still, the P-end of Ni 2 P is highly electronegative, offering desirable H + -capturing capability for enhanced H 2 generation. These give rise to an improved H 2 production of Ni 2 P/CN composite, optimally at 645.3 μmol g −1 ·h −1 as compared to immeasurable H 2 yielded by the pristine CN. Such photocatalytic performance is even comparable to the Pt-modified CN photocatalyst (640.6 μmol g −1 ·h −1 ). In recyclability test, a notable activity suppression of 33.17% was recorded after four reaction cycles. This can be ascribed to the pronounced photo-corrosion of the Ni 2 P cocatalyst during photoreaction. Nonetheless, a remarkably high H 2 generation (1328.6 μmol g −1 in 3 h) was still attained at 4 th cycle. This justifies the effectiveness of our synthesized Ni 2 P cocatalyst in enhancing H 2 generation of CN under visible light irradiation.

High-efficiency light utilization and prolonged lifetime of photo-induced charge carriers is a key step towards superior photocatalytic H 2 evolution. Herein, the design of a novel spatially separated Ni 2 P co-catalyst decorated SiO 2 /rGO/Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S yolk-shell structural photocatalytic nanoreactor is reported. In this system, the advantages of ultrathin mesoporous shell and yolk-shell structure not only facilitate the mass diffusion with short length, but also allow broad-spectrum light absorption and increase the density of catalytic active sites. Importantly, the photo-generated electrons can be directionally injected from the outermost Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S shell to the spatially separated Ni 2 P co-catalyst. The dynamic behaviors of photo-induced charge carriers can be rationally regulated by the suitable energy level alignment and the built-in electric fields derived from both sides of embedded rGO interlayer. The synergistic effects of the excellent light-harvesting ability, more exposed active sites and improved charge separation efficiency significantly boosted the photocatalytic performances of hydrogen evolution. As a result, the optimal SiO 2 /Ni 2 P/rGO/Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S composite exhibited the highest hydrogen generation of 11.65 mmoL‧g −1 ‧h −1 , even after five cycles. This work proposes new insights into the design of the efficient hollow sphere structural heterojunctions for photocatalytic water splitting applications.

CdS photocorrosion seriously impeded its application in photocatalysis , especially for water splitting. Here we report new strategies to improve CdS photocorrosion resistance properties significantly by coating Ni 2 P shell and assembling an artificial gill to remove newly formed O 2 from water. Ni 2 P@CdS catalyst can achieve the over-all water splitting under visible light irradiation without addition of any sacrifice reagent and noble metal loading. Compared with CdS itself, the 10Ni 2 P@CdS photocatalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution (251.4 μmol of H 2 in 180 min) with a high AQE (3.89% at 430 nm). This catalyst also presents high photocurrent, low overpotential (−0.32 V vs SCE), and long fluorescence lifetime (16.27 ns) of excited charges. Cd 2+ ions concentration measured by ICP and long term stability results verified the anti-photocorrosion role of Ni 2 P shell on CdS during water splitting reaction. The activity and stability of 10Ni 2 P@CdS is even superior to typical 1Pt@CdS catalyst. Our results confirm CdS can be an active catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water under visible irradiation if its stability is enhanced by protection of anti-photocorrosion over-coating shell and removing the nascent formed oxygen from water.

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are regarded as ideal HER electrocatalysts owing to their rich reserve, flexible composition, competitive activity, and excellent stability. Yet, TMPs still suffer from poor electrical conductivity and agglomeration under a high synthetic temperature of the solid-state reaction. Benefiting from the monodisperse metal sites with organic matrix surrounded, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential as a feedstock to produce MOF-derived TMPs with tailored microenvironments of the active sites. Herein, a series of nanostructured Ni2P@SNC were facilely fabricated by a one-step phosphorization of a well-designed Ni-MOF with red phosphorus as a “P” source. The optimal Ni2P@SNC-800 displayed an overpotential of 80 mV in 1.0 M KOH and 97 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 at 10 mA cm–2, demonstrating excellent HER performance as well as long durability in both electrolytes. The comprehensive performance of Ni2P@SNC-800 surpasses that of other heteroatom-free MOF-derived Ni2P significantly. This work provides a facile approach for the design and synthesis of MOF-derived TMPs coated with a heteroatom-doped carbon matrix as an electrocatalyst with high activity.

Developing an effective strategy to controllably construct phosphate shells on phosphides remains a challenge because of the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, Ni(PO x )@B-Ni 2 P/NF electrodes with an amorphous phosphate shell were fabricated using a phosphorization–quenching strategy. Remarkably, Ni(PO x )@B-Ni 2 P/NF requires only 81 mV and 1.333 V to deliver a current density of 100 mA cm −2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR), respectively—outperforming Pt/C@NF and previously reported Ni-based electrodes. The self-assembled Ni(PO x )@B-Ni 2 P/NF(+)||Ni(PO x )@B-Ni 2 P/NF(−) configuration achieves 1 A cm −2 at only 1.414 V for urea-assisted water splitting, indicating strong potential for industrial application. In situ Raman spectroscopy, combined with theoretical calculations, reveals that the amorphous phosphate shell, which exhibits strong urea adsorption capacity, optimizes the electronic configuration of the Ni(PO x )@B-Ni 2 P heterointerface. It also suppresses the peroxidation of internal Ni active sites into Ni–OOH by-products with high *COO adsorption energy. The resulting low-valent Ni O active species reduce the *COO adsorption energy and promote C N bond cleavage in urea, thereby accelerating UOR kinetics. These findings offer new design strategies for phosphate@phosphide electrodes tailored for industrial hydrogen production coupled with urea degradation.

It is an efficient strategy to introduce dual active sites into alkaline urea-assisted water electrolysis systems by interfacial coupling, but it still poses certain challenges. In this study, Ni 2 P-RuP 2 /C with hollow sphere structure is designed and synthesized by using solvothermal, ion exchange and one-step phosphating strategy. Studies utilizing density functional theory (DFT) and Synchrotron radiation show that Ni-P-Ru bridge in Ni 2 P-RuP 2 /C acts as an electron transport pathway that promotes localized charge redistribution, causing electrons to flow from Ni 2 P/C to RuP 2 /C, optimizing the d-band center and reducing the reaction barrier of HER and UOR. It is determined that the electron-rich Ru sites favor proton adsorption and the electron-deficient Ni sites favor the adsorption of urea molecules and the release of CO 2 which become the true active sites of HER and UOR, respectively. The optimized Ni 2 P-RuP 2 /C need merely 13 mV and 1.314 V to attain 10 mA cm −2 for HER and UOR, respectively. This study provides a reliable pathway for green hydrogen production through the construction of Ni-P-Ru bridge.

Graphical A flower-like Ni 2 P-FeP 4 -Cu 3 P/NF heterostructure catalyst, synthesized via pH-controlled etching and gas-phase phosphating, exhibits excellent OER activity (156/210 mV at 10/100 mA cm −2 ) and overall water splitting performance (1.47 V at 10 mA cm −2 ), due to synergistic effects from abundant grain boundaries, strong hydrophilicity, and rich Fe defects. Developing catalysts with rich metal defects, strong hydrophilicity, and extensive grain boundaries is crucial for enhancing the kinetics of electrocatalytic water oxidation and facilitating large-current water splitting. In this study, we utilized pH-controlled etching and gas-phase phosphating to synthesize a flower-like Ni 2 P-FeP 4 -Cu 3 P modified nickel foam heterostructure catalyst. This catalyst features pronounced hydrophilicity and a high concentration of Fe defects. It exhibits low overpotentials of 156 mV and 210 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 respectively, and maintains stability for up to 200 h at 100 mA cm −2 with only 7.3 % degradation, showcasing outstanding electrocatalytic water oxidation performance. Furthermore, when integrated into a Ni 2 P-FeP 4 -Cu 3 P/NF||Pt−C/NF electrolyzer, it achieves excellent overall water splitting performance, reaching current densities of 10 and 400 mA cm −2 at just 1.47 V and 1.73 V, respectively, and operates stably for 60 h at 500 mA cm −2 with minimal degradation. Analysis indicates that high-valence oxyhydroxides/phosphides of Ni, Fe, and Cu act as the primary active species. The presence of abundant Fe defects enhances electron transfer, strong hydrophilicity improves electrolyte contact, and numerous grain boundaries synergistically modulate the activation energy between active sites and oxygen-containing intermediates, significantly improving the kinetics of water oxidation.
