Orbital hybridization and adsorption modulating in Mo/P co-doped Ni3S2 enables superior urea-assisted water electrolysis at industrial current density

Jie Sun,Nan Zhao,Jianjiao Xin,Miao Yu,Chunmei Lv,Yanqing Jiao,Xiuwen Wang

Rational designing a robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for urea-assisted water splitting (UWS) toward a carbon-neutral economy is imperative factor to address the energy-intensive challenges of sustainable hydrogen production at industrial current densities. In this study, a Mo/P co-doped Ni 3 S 2 one-dimensional nanoarray, decorated with two-dimensional nanosheets (MP-Ni 3 S 2 ), is synthesized using an in-situ growth method. The optimized MP-Ni 3 S 2 exhibits a significant advantage in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR), achieving much lower potentials (1.346 V at 100 mA cm −2 and 1.505 V at 1000 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M + 0.33 M urea) comparable to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which requires 302 mV and 445 mV at the same current densities. The MP-Ni 3 S 2 ||MP-Ni 3 S 2 electrolyzer reduces the cell voltage from 2.146 V for overall water splitting (OWS) to 1.856 V for UWS at 500 mA cm −2 , surpassing most reported catalysts. Theocratical calculations demonstrate that Mo and P doping in Ni 3 S 2 , through the hybridization of Mo/Ni 3d and N/O 2p orbitals, effectively accelerates UOR kinetics by lowering the energy barrier in dehydrogenation and N-N coupling processes, while P doping optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔG H* ) to enhance HER activity, thereby synergistically improving overall performance. These findings offer a viable strategy for the development of energy-saving hydrogen production.

One-Step Scalable Synthesis of 3D Self-Supported Superaerophobic Ce-Coupled Ni3S2/NiS@NF Nanobud Catalyst for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Mengjie Lu,Run Cheng,Li Wang,Dandan Liang,Meng Qin,Bili Wang,Rui Song,Duo Chen

The elaborate design of inexpensive, high-performance electrocatalysts from earth-abundant elements toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical in various (electro)chemical processes. Herein, a novel binder-free catalyst of Ce-coupled Ni3S2/NiS supported on Ni foam (Ce-Ni3S2/NiS@NF) is successfully synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method that enables practical feasibility with a significant enhancement of OER activity through anchoring Ce dopants on an Ni3S2/NiS nanobud host. Ce species coupling can modulate electronic structure, which reduces the reaction energy barrier and optimizes OER catalytic activity. More profoundly, the superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties of the Ce-Ni3S2/NiS@NF electrode further promote mass transfer. As a result, the Ce-Ni3S2/NiS@NF electrode exhibits excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 236 and 350 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and long-term durability for 24 h in alkaline medium. These results could supply valuable guidelines for the design of other OER catalysts and beyond.

The Core/Shell Structure P Doped MoS2@Ni3S2 Nanorods Array for High Current Density Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline and Acidic Electrolyte

Yong Gao,Dani Zhang,Jingjing Li,Hao Gong,Cheng Jiang,Hairong Xue,Xianli Huang,Tao Wang,Jianping He

Graphical The P doped MoS 2 @Ni 3 S 2 nanorods array with core/shell structure was prepared through successive sulfuration and phosphorization strategies, which exhibits close catalytic activity to Pt/C, the overpotential is only 290 mV at 250 mA cm −2 . Electrocatalysis is the most promising strategy to generate clean energy H 2 , and the development of catalysts with excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance at high current density that can resist strong alkaline and acidic electrolyte environment is of great significance for practical industrial application. Therefore, a P doped MoS 2 @Ni 3 S 2 nanorods array (named P-NiMoS) was successfully synthesized through successive sulfuration and phosphorization. P-NiMoS presents a core/shell structure with a heterojunction between MoS 2 (shell) and Ni 3 S 2 (core). Furthermore, the doping of P modulates the electronic structure of the P-NiMoS; the electrons transfer from the t 2g orbital of Ni element to the e g empty orbital of Mo element through the Ni−S−Mo bond at the Ni 3 S 2 and MoS 2 heterojunction, facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction. As a result, P-NiMoS exhibits excellent HER activity; the overpotential is 290 mV at high current density of 250 mA cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte, which is close to Pt/C (282 mV@250 mA cm −2 ), and P-NiMoS can stably evolve hydrogen for 48 h.

One-step synthesis of Co9S8@Ni3S2 heterostructure for enhanced electrochemical performance as sodium ion battery anode material and hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst

Yan Zhou,Jingtong Zhang,Fengchao Sun,Xinping Yu,Wenpei Kang,Jun Zhang

In this work, sheet-like Co 9 S 8 was directly grown on Ni 3 S 2 spheres (donate as Co 9 S 8 @Ni 3 S 2 ) via a one-step hydrothermal synthetic approach. The structural characterization of Co 9 S 8 @Ni 3 S 2 revealed that the Co 9 S 8 nanosheets were perpendicularly arrayed on Ni 3 S 2 spheres. This heterostructure thus fixes the two-dimensional Co 9 S 8 in position on Ni 3 S 2 spheres to obtain a stable heterostructural material. Due to the strengthened morphological structure, high surface area, metallic feature of Co 9 S 8 and Ni 3 S 2 , and the synergetic effect, the Co 9 S 8 @Ni 3 S 2 showed excellent performance in sodium ion battery (SIB) anode and HER cathode. The electrochemical tests showed that Co 9 S 8 @Ni 3 S 2 can demonstrate excellent HER catalytic activity with only −0.16 V and −0.23 V overpotential needed to achieve 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 current density in acidic condition. Besides, Co 9 S 8 @Ni 3 S 2 heterostructure as an anode in SIB also delivered high discharge capacity of 699 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 current density in the first cycle, with 92% Columbic efficiency.

Hierarchical Highly Wrinkled Trimetallic NiFeCu Phosphide Nanosheets on Nanodendrite Ni3S2/Ni Foam as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Meysam Khodabakhshi,Shumin Chen,Tian Ye,Hao Wu,Li Yang,Wenfeng Zhang,Haixin Chang

The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and costly noble-metal oxide catalysts hinder the vast usage of environmentally friendly water splitting for hydrogen production. Elemental doping by partial replacing of parent metal elements with elements of higher electronegativity is considered to be one of the most efficient strategies to promote the electrocatalytic OER performance. In this work, we synthesize an efficient hierarchical highly wrinkled NiFeCu phosphide nanosheet on nanodendrite Ni3S2/NiF substrates through partial replacement of Cu instead of Ni and Fe in NiFeP@Ni3S2/NiF by using a facile electrodeposition method. The NiFeCuP@Ni3S2/NiF electrocatalyst needs only 230, 282, and 351 mV to reach 10, 50, and 100 mA × cm–2, respectively. Notably, this electrocatalyst shows one of the lowest OER overpotentials at 10 mA/cm–2 for metal phosphides and endured the OER at 20 mA × cm–2 for 18 h with negligible voltage elevation. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), double-layer capacitance (Cdl) plots, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that the partial Cu doping in NiFeP@Ni3S2/NiF not only can change the electron density around Ni and Fe but also can increase the electrochemically active surface area and conductivity of electrocatalysts.

Interlaced rosette-like MoS2/Ni3S2/NiFe-LDH grown on nickel foam: A bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen production by urea-assisted electrolysis

Maoxiao He,Shengnan Hu,Chuanqi Feng,Huimin Wu,Huakun Liu,He Mei

In targeting the most important energy and environmental issues in current society, the development of low-cost, bifunctional electrocatalysts for urea-assisted electrocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production is an urgent and challenging task. In this work, interlaced rosette-like MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-layered double hydroxide/nickel foam (LDH/NF) is successfully synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal reaction . Due to its unique interlaced heterostructure , MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activity towards the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1.0 M KOH with 0.5 M urea. In a concurrent two-electrode electrolyser (MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF(+,-)), only voltage of 1.343 V is required to reach 50 mA cm −2 , which is 216 mV lower than for pure water splitting. Furthermore, after 16 h of urea electrolysis in 1.0 M KOH with 0.5 M urea, the current density remains at 98% of the original value. Thus, the catalyst is not only favorable for H 2 production, but also has great significance for the problem of urea-rich wastewater treatment .

Constructing defect-rich S-doped NiMoO4/Ni3S2 2D/2D heterostructures as highly efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Tengfei Zhang,Dan Xu,Ping Liu,Long Chen,Wen Guo,Tiantian Gu,Feng Yu,Yanyan Liu,Gang Wang

The development of economical, efficient, and durable bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting is an attractive and challenging task. Herein, a novel defect-rich 2D/2D heterostructure is constructed by vertically growing S-doped NiMoO 4 (NiMoO 4 -S) nanosheets on nickel sulfide (Ni 3 S 2 ) nanosheet arrays supported on nickel foam (NF) using a two-step hydrothermal method. Benefiting from the hierarchical sheet-on-sheet heterogeneous nanostructure and abundant oxygen vacancies for more active sites, efficient electronic/mass transfer, and fast gas release, the synthesized NiMoO 4 -S/Ni 3 S 2 /NF electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for HER (η 10 mA cm −2 = 107 mV) and OER (η 50 mA cm −2 = 285 mV). The alkaline water electrolyzer with NiMoO 4 -S/Ni 3 S 2 /NF as the positive and negative electrodes can provide a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with the potential of 1.52 V, which is below that of the commercial Pt||RuO 2 /NF system or many other reported systems. More importantly, the alkaline water electrolyzer offers a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at 1.85 V with outstanding durability of over 50 h. This research points to a promising route in designing transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for large-scale energy conversion applications.

In situ hydrothermal growth of metallic Co9S8-Ni3S2 nanoarrays on nickel foam as bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions

Yun Zhou,Shengqi Xi,Xigang Yang,Hongjing Wu

Conductivity and morphology are the two important factors affecting the performance of electrocatalysts . In this article, a facile two-step hydrothermal process was developed to grow Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 nanoarrays on nickel foam (Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 NAs/NF). The as-obtained catalyst possessed a novel morphology, in which the Co 9 S 8 nanoneedles were surrounded by Ni 3 S 2 ultrathin nanosheets . The resultant Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 nanoarrays not only permitted more exposures of active sites but also facilitated the charges and ions transport along the nanoarrays. Moreover, both Co 9 S 8 and Ni 3 S 2 exhibited metallic properties allowed the catalysts with conductivity (metallic conductor vs. semiconductor). Co 9 S 8 -Ni 3 S 2 NAs/NF exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activities for both HER and OER in 1.0 M KOH solution. To reach a large current density of 100 mA cm −2 , it only required overpotentials of 204 mV and 346 mV for HER and OER, respectively. After long-term electrolysis, the high activities were still preserved. This work indicates efficient electrocatalysts can be obtained by the rational design of the heterostructure , which sheds some light on the development of noble metal-free electrocatalysts.

Construction of strawberry-like Ni3S2@Co9S8 heteronanoparticle-embedded biomass-derived 3D N-doped hierarchical porous carbon for ultrahigh energy density supercapacitors

Shifu Wang,Zuoyi Xiao,Shangru Zhai,Haisong Wang,Weijie Cai,Longfei Qin,Jianying Huang,Di Zhao,Zhongcheng Li,Qingda An

The design of advanced supercapacitors requires electrode materials that combine high surface area with a developed hierarchical porous structure to facilitate ion transport and electrolyte permeability. Herein, we report a cross-linking and in situ sulfuration strategy for synthesizing nickel sulfide (Ni3S2) nanocrystal-attached cobalt sulfide (Co9S8) encapsulated on three-dimensional (3D) N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC). The Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC composite was extensively studied using different characterization technologies. The results revealed that the obtained material integrated the advantages of a developed N-doped carbon framework (fast ion transport and excellent electrical conductivity) and transition metal sulfide species (high theoretical specific capacitance). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of a strawberry-like Ni3S2@Co9S8 structure and 3D interconnected hierarchical porous carbon, the resulting Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC composite exhibited an ultrahigh attractive specific capacitance of 1970.5 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and excellent cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 89.5% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g−1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) of Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC//HPC was assembled in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. It delivered an energy density of 77.1 W h kg−1 at a power density of 263.3 W kg−1, and it remained as high as 36.1 W h kg−1 even at 25.9 kW kg−1. It is believed that the presented work opens up a new strategy to fabricate high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Polyoxometalate–Surfactant Hybrids Directed Assembly of Ni3S2 into Hollow Microsphere as Pt-Comparable Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Medium

Bin Tian,Jinlong Lei,Jiahai Wang

A large surface area of catalytic sites and low electric resistance are desirable properties for electrocatalysts that lower the overpotential required for electrochemical reactions, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), in this study. In the presence of polyoxometalate (POM) and triblock copolymer pluronic (P123) as a hybrid soft template, the hydrothermal sulfurization of nickel foam leads to the formation of a hollow microsphere, assembled from the Ni3S2 motif. Sonication for preparing POM+P123 hybrids, while adjusting the POM content, is an effective strategy for synthesizing a Pt-like electrocatalyst with excellent hydrogen evolution efficiency. The reason is that both sonication and optimal POM content can simultaneously enhance the electroactive surface area and electron transfer of the Ni3S2 electrocatalyst. Adopting the optimal conditions, the three-dimensional porous network, composed of Ni3S2 hollow microspheres on the nickel foam, shows that the HER in an alkaline medium requires only 77 mV overpotential for a current density of 10 mA cm–2, with a robust long-term stability during a 25 h test. The performance at a large current density outperforms the current benchmark electrocatalyst (Pt) for HER.

A flexible and high-performance all-solid-state supercapacitor device based on Ni3S2 nanosheets coated ITO nanowire arrays on carbon fabrics

Jie Yang,Chun Fang,Chunxiong Bao,Weiwei Yang,Tao Yu,Weidong Zhu,Faming Li,Jianguo Liu,Zhigang Zou

A Ni3S2 coated indium tin oxide (ITO) core–shell structure on flexible carbon fabrics (CF@ITO@Ni3S2) was prepared by electrodepositing Ni3S2 nanosheets on ITO nanowire arrays grown on flexible carbon fabrics by chemical vapor deposition. The ITO nanowires on carbon fabrics formed a conductive support which offered a large contact surface with the electrolyte and hence was accessible for ion diffusion. Ni3S2 nanosheets were uniformly deposited on the ITO nanowire. The maximum mass loading of Ni3S2 on ITO nanowire array coated carbon fabrics could reach about a quadruple higher amount than that on the bare carbon fabrics. The prepared CF@ITO@Ni3S2 electrodes exhibited excellent capacitive performance compared with Ni3S2 coated bare carbon fabric electrodes (CF@Ni3S2). High areal capacitance of 3.85 F cm−2 and gravimetric capacitance of 1865 F g−1 were achieved when the mass loadings of Ni3S2 on the ITO nanowire arrays were around 4.12 mg cm−2 and 0.96 mg cm−2, respectively. The sample with 0.96 mg cm−2 of Ni3S2 could also deliver 1372 F g−1 when charge–discharge current density reached 50 mA cm−2, indicating the excellent rate capability of the structure. The assembled all-solid-state full cell based on symmetric electrodes obtained a relatively high areal capacitance of 736 mF cm−2 at 8 mA cm−2, which delivered a maximum energy density of 1.02 mW h cm−3 at a power density of 39.9 W cm−3. The outstanding capacitive performance suggests that the CF@ITO@Ni3S2 device was promising for application in an inexpensive energy storage system.

A non-noble metal Li, Mn co-doped Ni3S2 electrocatalyst for glycerol oxidation synergistic coupling to promote the hydrogen evolution reaction

Qingtao Wang,Xiaoling Zhou,Hanbin Jin,Lulu Guo,Yanxia Wu,Shufang Ren

As one of the effective methods for hydrogen production, water electrolysis has been widely studied. However, the high overpotential challenge faced by the anode and the limitation of the electron transfer rate in this process significantly inhibit the efficiency of hydrogen production, which has become the main obstacle to overcome in the current research. The use of thermodynamically more favorable organic compounds to oxidize at the anode instead of traditional water oxidation (OER) is an effective strategy to optimize the process of electrolytic hydrogen production. In this paper, Ni3S2 catalysts co-doped with non-noble metals Li and Mn were prepared on nickel foam and used for the glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) coupled with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In alkaline solution, Li, Mn–Ni3S2@NF exhibits good GOR and HER performance. Specifically, overpotentials of 1.58 V vs. RHE and 0.54 V vs. RHE are required to reach a current density of 200 mA cm−2, respectively, and the catalytic performance of the material remains good after a long-term test. Li, Mn–Ni3S2@NF as a bifunctional catalytic material oxidizes glycerol to formate, and its faradaic efficiency (FE) is as high as 91%, and the volume of hydrogen production is close to the theoretical value. In addition, the replacement of the OER by the GOR can reduce the energy consumption by about 17.44%.
