Aliovalent Sc and Li co-doping boosts the performance of p-type NiO sensor

Junqing Chang,Mati Horprathum,Dianhui Wang,Gang Meng,Zanhong Deng,Bin Tong,Pinit Kidkhunthod,Tiantian Dai,Meng Li,Hongyu Liu,Wei Tong,Shimao Wang,Xiaodong Fang

Though p-type NiO possesses excellent catalytic oxidation property toward volatile organic compounds (VOCs), intrinsic low sensitivity of NiO (arising from the hole accumulation layer configuration in ambient air atmosphere sensor) restricts its promising applications in VOCs detection. In this study, Sc and Li were proposed to modulate the (surface) properties of NiO nanosheet-flowers based sensors. At the optimal 2 at.% Sc and 5 at.% Li doping ratio (Ni 0.93 Sc 0.02 Li 0.05 O), the sensitivity to 100 ppm ethanol is 118.4 (105 times higher than that of pure NiO), which is comparable to or even higher than most of reported NiO based sensors. Moreover, Ni 0.93 Sc 0.02 Li 0.05 O sensor exhibits a low detection limit of 10 ppb, excellent repeatability and long-term stability (∼30 % decline of response after 7 months). Apart from regulating the carrier concentration, defect characterizations indicate a noticeable increase of stabilized surface oxygen vacancy (O V ) defects and Ni 3+ cations by Sc 3+ and Li + co-doping, which greatly facilitate the adsorption of VOCs molecule (revealed by density functional theory calculation) as well as the subsequent VOCs/NiO interfacial charge interaction, thus contribute to the superior sensing performances. This work demonstrates that co-doping offers an effective avenue for boosting the performances of (p-type) oxide sensors.

Efficient synergism of NiSe2 nanoparticle/NiO nanosheet for energy-relevant water and urea electrocatalysis

Zong Liu,Chengzhe Zhang,Hui Liu,Ligang Feng

Herein, we highlighted that a catalyst system of NiSe 2 nanoparticle/NiO nanosheet catalyst exhibited efficient synergism for energy and environmental-relevant urea-assisted water electrolysis reactions. The spectral study and microscopic analysis demonstrated the formation of NiSe 2 nanoparticle/NiO nanosheet heterostructure and efficient Ni O bond and Ni Se bond synergism. Owing to various factors such as the strong synergetic coupling effects between NiSe 2 nanoparticle and NiO nanosheet, unique structure features, increased active sites and amount of intrinsic Ni 3+ ions, efficient synergism was found on the NiSe 2 Nanoparticle/NiO nanosheet for urea-assisted water electrolysis by comparing with the NiSe 2 Nanoparticle and NiO nanosheet alone. It required a cell voltage of 1.39 V, about 210 mV less than that of water electrolysis, confirming the less energy consumption during the electrolysis. Notably, it also shows remarkably superior long-term durability. The current work may extend the nanoparticle-nanosheet catalysts system for simultaneous wastewater treatment and clean energy production.

Transition Metal (Fe, Co, Mn) Boosting the Lithium Storage of the Multishelled NiO Anode

Chengrui Wang,Lei Zhang,Yuhai Dou,Luke Hencz,Lixue Jiang,Mohammad Al-Mamun,Porun Liu,Shanqing Zhang,Dan Wang,Huijun Zhao

Further commercial application of low-cost NiO-based anodes is hindered by their large volume expansion after full lithiation and relatively poor theoretical capacity. To improve these issues, transition metal (Fe, Co, or Mn)-modified triple-shelled NiO microspheres (TS-NiO) are successfully synthesized by using a hard template double-adsorption method. Among them, the Fe-modified TS-NiO (TS-NFO) exhibits an extraordinary lithium storage ability with high reversible capacity and outstanding cycling stability (2061.1 mAh g −1 after 800 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 ), which is the highest performing nickel oxide-based anode reported to date. The outstanding electrochemical performance of TS-NFO can be ascribed to its unique triple-shelled structure. The inner core of TS-NFO is composed of NiO and is encapsulated by two outer shells which are composed of a mixture of α-Fe 2 O 3 and NiFe 2 O 4 , resulting in a unique hollow triple-shelled structure (NiO@α-Fe 2 O 3 /NiFe 2 O 4 ). The void space between the triple shells leaves room for their volume changes during lithiation/delithiation, which improves the cycling stability. In addition, the introduced α-Fe 2 O 3 /NiFe 2 O 4 outer shells increase the energy density and reversible capacity due to a synergistically interactive effect.

Enhanced Visible-Light Driven Photocatalytic Performances Over LaFeO3/NiO Modified Porous g-C3N4 Nanosheets

Ke Xu,Xiaosheng Yang,Dagao Sun,Xin Yang,Yumei Zhou,Wei Li,Qindan Yang,Xianjiong Yang,Rong Li,Jian Feng

LaFeO 3 /NiO modified g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (L-N/CNS) were synthesized by a two-step method. HRTEM results showed that an intimate contact between LaFeO 3 , NiO and N-CNS was successfully established. Ninety percent of phenol was degraded within 120 min, and the hydrogen evolution rate of 171.2 μ mol h − 1 g − 1 was obtained over the L-N/CNS heterojunctions under the visible-light irradiation. It was higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, NiO modified g-C 3 N 4 and LaFeO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 . The ⋅ O 2 − radicals acted the crucial role in the photocatalytic degradation reaction. EIS, PL and time-resolved fluorescence spectra demonstrated that L-N/CNS possessed the highest charge separation efficiency. The intimate contact between LaFeO 3 , NiO and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets promoted the separation and transfer of photo-induced electron–hole pairs and consequently prolonged the exciton lifetime, and implied more photo-induced electrons could be probably involved in the photocatalytic reactions on the surface of photocatalysts. Thus, the visible-light driven photocatalytic performances of L-N/CNS were effective. This work provided a feasible method to design and construct heterostructures for the exploitation of solar energy.

Optimizing the Oxygen Vacancies Concentration of Thin NiO Nanosheets for Efficient Selective CO2 Photoreduction

Junxiang Xiang,Tingshi Zhang,Ruodan Cao,Mingxiong Lin,Bixia Yang,Yonglin Wen,Zanyong Zhuang,Yan Yu

In designing highly efficient CO 2 reduction reaction (CRR) photocatalysts with excellent selectivity and efficiency, a key limitation is the poor understanding on the mechanism response of the active sites of catalysts to CRR selectivity and activity. Herein, it is revealed how the concentration of point defect affects the CRR selectivity and activity of catalysts. Quasi-2D NiO nanosheets (NSs) that are composed of NiO nanoparticles (NPs), and finely tuned the oxygen vacancies (OVs) concentration of the NSs by regulating the grain size (≈5–25 nm) of NPs are created. The NiO with moderate OVs concentration has the highest photocatalytic CRR efficiency and selectivity ( V CO = 17.2 μmol h −1 , 98.3%), outperforming other prepared NiO catalysts and reported Ni-based photocatalysts. Density functional theory calculation associated with the CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption confirms that the moderate OVs concentration enables strong CO 2 binding to promote CO 2 adsorption and activation and allows efficient charge transfer. In contrast, excessive OVs reduce the CO 2 binding affinity and restrain charge mobility, both detrimental to the CRR performance.

Ni/NiO Nanocomposites with Rich Oxygen Vacancies as High-Performance Catalysts for Nitrophenol Hydrogenation

Jun Zhou,Yue Zhang,Song Li,Jing Chen

Heterogeneous catalysis often involves charge transfer between adsorbed molecules and the surface of catalyst, and thus their activity depends on the surface charge density. The efficiency of charge transfer could be optimized by adjusting the concentration of oxygen vacancies (Ov). In this work, hexagonal Ni(OH)2nanoparticles were initially synthesized by a hydrothermal process using aluminum powder as the sacrificial agent, and were then converted into 2D Ni/NiO nanocomposites through in situ reduction in hydrogen flow. The oxygen vacancy concentration in the NiO nanosheet could be well-controlled by adjusting the reduction temperature. This resulted in strikingly high activities for hydrogenation of nitrophenol. The Ni/NiO nanocomposite could easily be recovered by a magnetic field for reuse. The present finding is beneficial for producing better hydrogenation catalysts and paves the way for the design of highly efficient catalysts.Keywords:metal-oxide interaction;oxygen vacancy;hydrogenation;catalyst

Fabrication of microwave absorbing Ni/NiO/C nanofibers with robust superhydrophobic properties by electrospinning

Shen Yongqian,Wei Yupeng,Li Jian,Zhang Yuchen,Li Bin,Lu Xuefeng,Ji Binghan,Yan Pengze,Du Xueyan

Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing materials with superhydrophobic property and enhanced microwave absorbing ability are very important for the application of stealth technologies, especially in humid conditions. In the present work, the electrospinning technique was employed to fabricate NiAc/PVA nanofibers (NFs) from nickel acetate tetrahydrate (NiAc) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution as precursors, while the PVA component was further pyrolyzed and carbonized to obtain Ni/NiO/C NFs. Microwave absorption performance and EM parameters of the prepared NFs were then investigated from 2.0 to 18.0 GHz. Comparative studies between different samples elucidated not only the possible causes for lose mechanisms, but also impedance matching. According to the experimental results, when NiAc/PVA NFs contained 8% NiAc, the calcinated Ni/NiO/C NFs could achieve an optimum reflection loss of − 33.9 dB at 10.4 GHz under a thickness of 2.5 mm and exhibit an effective frequency bandwidth of 5.7 GHz. Furthermore, the membrane of Ni/NiO/C NFs with the best absorption property exhibited robust hydrophobicity and the contact angle was 144.9°, It shows that the obtained Ni/NiO/C NFs have a broad application prospect in waterproof stealth materials.

Preparation of C/Ni–NiO composite nanofibers for anode materials in lithium-ion batteries

Luo Chenghao,Lu Weili,Li Yu,Feng Yiyu,Feng Wei,Zhao Yunhui,Yuan Xiaoyan

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) embedded with various amounts of Ni and NiO nanoparticles (C/Ni–NiO) were prepared by electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), followed by heat treatment. The structure and composition of the obtained C/Ni–NiO composite nanofibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results suggested that the morphology, nanofiber diameter, and the content of the Ni–NiO nanoparticles in the CNFs were controlled by different amounts of nickel acetate added into the PAN. The electrochemical measurements of a charge/discharge experiment and a cyclic voltammetry test indicated that the content and the size of Ni–NiO nanoparticles embedded in the CNFs had a great influence on the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries. CNFs embedded with a certain content of Ni–NiO nanoparticles as binder-free anodes for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries exhibited improved electrochemical performance, including high reversible capacities, good capacity retention, and stable cycling performance. This is mainly ascribed to the formation of a well-distributed Ni–NiO nanoparticle structure and the buffering role of the carbon nanofiber matrix, together with the high theoretical capacity of NiO and the increase in electrode connectivity caused by the formation of electrochemically inactive Ni nanoparticles.

Low concentration H2S detection of CdO-decorated hierarchically mesoporous NiO nanofilm with wrinkle structure

Ting-ting Yu,Xian-Fa Zhang,Ying-Ming Xu,Xiao-Li Cheng,Shan Gao,Hui Zhao,Li-Hua Huo

CdO-decorated hierarchically mesoporous NiO nanofilm with wrinkle structure was grown in-situ on ceramic tubes via a simple hydrothermal reaction without any surfactant or template. The as-prepared nanofilm was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analyzes. It exhibits a nanoparticulate film with uniformly self-assembled wrinkles. These wrinkles are thin porous nanosheets that are further constructed by subnanometer nanoparticles . Compared with the NiO porous nanowall arrays, the 2.01   mol% CdO-decorated NiO film exhibits not only higher response to part per billion (ppb) levels (0.5–100   ppb) H 2 S at low temperature (92   °C), but also higher selectivity to other reducing gases compared with pure NiO porous nanowall arrays. The lowest detection limit of the NiO film after CdO decoration decreases down to 0.5   ppb while that of pure NiO is 1   ppb. The mechanism of the enhanced H 2 S sensing for 2.01   mol% Cd-decorated NiO film is also discussed in detail.

Synthesis of Porous NiO Nanorods as High-Performance Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Qian Li,Gang Huang,Dongming Yin,Yaoming Wu,Limin Wang

1D nanostructured metal oxides with porous structure have drawn wide attention to being used as high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study puts forward a simple and scalable strategy to synthesize porous NiO nanorods with the help of a thermal treatment of metal-organic frameworks in air. The NiO nanorods with an average diameter of approximately 38 nm are composed of nanosized primary particles. When evaluated as anode materials for LIBs, an initial discharge capacity of 743 mA h g −1 is obtained at a current density of 100 mA g −1 , and a high reversible capacity is still maintained as high as 700 mA h g −1 even after 60 charge–discharge cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance is mainly ascribed to the 1D porous structure.

Solution-processed quantum dot light-emitting diodes based on NiO nanocrystals hole injection layer

Yidong Zhang,Shujie Wang,Ling Chen,Yan Fang,Huaibin Shen,Zuliang Du

Nickel oxide (NiO), as a kind of p-type transition metal oxide (TMO) has shown promising applications in photoelectric devices . In our work, the NiO nanocrystals (NCs) are fabricated by a simple solvothermal method using tert-butyl alcohol and nickel acetylacetonate as precursors at 200 °C for different reaction times. The diameters and valence band edge of the prepared NiO NCs are increased with the increase reaction time from 12 h, 24 h–36 h. The band gaps of the NiO NCs were decreased with the increase time. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) shows that the NiO NCs is polycrystalline structure. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that the NiO NCs is cubic crystal form . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that the as-prepared NiO NCs have a core of NiO and some form of Ni 2 O 3 and NiOOH states on its surface. Further, the obtained NiO NCs is applied on quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) as hole injection layer (HILs), showing excellent hole injection properties. Particularly, the NiO NCs for 24 h obtains the best results due to its high band gap and pure cubic crystal phase. Highly bright orange-red QLED with peak luminance up to ∼25580 cd m −2 , and current efficiency (CE) of 5.38 cd A −1 are achieved successfully based on the high performance NiO HIL, further, the device obtained relative long operational lifetime of 11491 h, which has been improved by more than 6- fold as compared to 1839 h for the device based on PEDOT.

Pyrolysis and catalytic upgrading of low-rank coal using a NiO/MgO–Al2O3 catalyst

Yi Li,Muhammad Nadeem Amin,Xingmei Lu,Chunshan Li,Fuqiang Ren,Suojiang Zhang

The catalyst NiO/MgO–Al 2 O 3 was prepared by loading magnesium and nickel onto the surface of γ-Al 2 O 3 beads, respectively, and was adapted to in situ upgrade the high temperature pyrolysis vapor derived from coal pyrolysis. The catalyst synthesis process, and structural variation were characterized by the XRD, SEM, and physical adsorption analyzer. In order to examine the catalytic effect on the different nickel loading ratio in the catalysts, the solid–liquid–gas product distribution, variation of gas and components of coal tar were studied by simulated distillation, GC/MS, elemental analysis and so on. The results shows both the tar yield and the content of the light fraction in the tar can be increased by catalytic up grade. The catalyst has a strong ability to convert the heavy component and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the tar to lower molecular weight components.
