Bifunctional N,P-codoped Ag catalyst achieves outstanding seawater electrolysis performance. • Enhanced HER via optimized H adsorption and H–H coupling enabled by N,P codoping. • In situ generated PO 4 3− activates lattice oxygen, lowers OER barrier, suppresses Cl − adsorption. Herein, we present a bifunctional N,P-co-doped Ag (N,P–Ag) catalyst synthesized via one-step electrodeposition for efficient alkaline seawater splitting. The catalyst achieves low overpotentials of 260 mV@50 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 49 mV@10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), along with excellent reaction kinetics and long-term stability (sustained operation for 200 h at 100 mA cm −2 ). DFT calculations disclose that N, P co-doping enhances HER activity by disrupting Ag's electronic configuration to create new hybrid orbitals and delocalized electronic states, which in turn optimize H* adsorption and accelerate H–H bond formation. In-situ Raman spectroscopy captures the surface restructuring process during OER that leads to the formation of the active phase PO 4 3- -AgO. The lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) enables lattice oxygen to participate directly in the OER process, helping to optimize the energy levels of intermediate reactions and weaken Cl − adsorption, thereby effectively suppressing chloride ion corrosion. This work demonstrates a combined approach of non-metallic doping for electronic tuning and in-situ anion modification for lattice oxygen activation, providing a viable route to achieve efficient and corrosion-resistant seawater electrolysis. By modulating electron conduction via N/P doping, localized charge enrichment zones are created around Ag atoms as HER-active sites, while in situ-generated PO 4 3− activates lattice oxygen, lowering the reaction barrier and inhibiting chloride corrosion. The partially crystalline NiFe layered double hydroxide (pc-NiFe-LDH) nanosheets , as a high-efficient and cost-effective catalyst toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER), were synthesized by a facile, green and time-saving strategy in this work. The pc-NiFe-LDH can spontaneously grow in situ on the Ni foams (NF) at room temperature and does not consume any extra energy. The 3D structure of the pc-NiFe-LDH/NF with more active sites was confirmed by SEM, TEM and the calculated large electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) of 118 cm 2 , which endowed the pc-NiFe-LDH/NF with an outstanding OER performance in 1.0 M KOH. The overpotentials of 133 mV and 153 mV ( vs . RHE, with 95% iR compensation) at the current density of 20 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 were obtained, respectively. The pc-NiFe-LDH/NF showed rapid OER kinetics and efficient mass and electron transfer with a small Tafel slope of 30 mV dec −1 , and excellent endurance for 17 h long-term continuous OER operation at 1.609 V ( vs . RHE, without iR correction) with 2.6% enhancement of the current density. The performance was superior to those of most reported NiFe-based catalysts, which made it grand feasibility in practical industrial applications.

A novel two-dimensional Co-MOF material {[Co(dptz)2(oba)2]·(DMF)2}n is prepared using mixed organic ligands, which exhibits both OER (oxygen evolution reaction) and HER (hydrogen evolution reaction) catalytic performance. The integration of an Fe dopant and amorphous interface into Co-MOF to improving the electrocatalytic performance of pristine MOFs (metal–organic frameworks) is demonstrated and the origin of the remarkable electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst is elucidated. The comprehensive characterization data of Fe@Co-MOFs illustrate that there is a crystallinity transition during the doping of Co-MOF, which increases the electron transfer rate of the material and ensures increased exposure of the ligand unsaturated active site on the surface, and modulates the electronic structure of the Co center in a synergistic manner. As a result, the optimized catalytic Fe@Co-MOF-3 with an amorphous structure exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the OER, with only 248 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm−2 and excellent stability after 11 h of testing in alkaline solution. Not only that, the HER was achieved with a low overpotential of 150 mV at 10 mA cm−2. The present work indicates that the as-synthesized Co-MOF and Fe@Co-MOFs offer prospects in developing electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Modulating the electronic state of nickel is a crucial strategy for activating lattice oxygen participation in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a sol–gel-assisted hydrothermal strategy is employed to synthesize sulfate-intercalated NiFe-LDH (SG-S-NiFe-LDH), where SO42– anions are stably incorporated into the interlayer galleries to modulate Ni oxidation states. This interfacial regulation reconstructs the local electronic environment, enabling the formation of high-valent Ni species and favoring a lattice-oxygen-mediated (LOM) pathway. Structural characterizations confirm successful anion incorporation, while post-OER XPS evidences Ni3+/Ni4+ enrichment. Mechanistic studies, including pH-dependent kinetics and O–O intermediate trapping, further validate LOM dominance. SG-S-NiFe-LDH exhibits outstanding activity with a low overpotential of 177 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a Tafel slope of 32.98 mV dec–1, and long-term durability exceeding 170 h. Post-OER HRTEM and ICP confirm structural robustness and minimal Ni loss. Density functional theory calculations reveal that sulfate intercalation raises the Ni d-band center, strengthens *OOH adsorption, and reduces the *OOH → *OO barrier to 0.53 eV. Moreover, a water-splitting device using SG-S-NiFe-LDH as the anode achieves 100 mA cm–2 at 1.66 V with stable 28 h operation. Faradaic efficiency above 98% with an O2:H2 ratio of 1:2 confirms high reaction selectivity. This work demonstrates a targeted anion intercalation strategy to modulate transition-metal states, unlock lattice oxygen reactivity, and advance efficient and durable water electrolysis.

Exploring efficient and durable non-noble metal catalysts toward oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is of practical significance in advancing Zn-air batteries. Herein, we introduce a three-dimensional (3D) bifunctional electrocatalyst (Fe/Ni@NSC) consisting of N, S-dual doped mesoporous carbon nanosheets/carbon nanotubes embedded with abundant FeS/FeNi nanoparticles and Fe/Ni-N x sites by integrating rod-like ZIF-L@S-g-C 3 N 4 with Fe/Ni-phen complex and subsequent pyrolysis. The 3D structure not only offers a high surface area for active sites but also accelerates O 2 transport/charge transfer. Leveraging the synergistic effect of the 3D porous carbon network and multiple active sites, Fe/Ni@NSC exhibited outstanding activities in both ORR (half-wave potential, 0.868 V) and OER (overpotential, 317 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), indicating a low potential gap of 0.679 V, outperforming the Pt/C + RuO 2 benchmarks (0.695 V). The Zn-air batteries based on Fe/Ni@NSC achieved a promising open circuit voltage (1.47 V), peak power density (172.59 mW cm −2 ), as well as long-term cycling stability (370 h). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrated that the interfacial electronic interaction between FeS and FeNi effectively boosted the bifunctional catalytic performance for ORR/OER. This study lays the foundation for designing low-cost and efficient 3D structure non-noble metal catalysts for more energy conversion and storage devices.

Graphical Transition-metal phosphides : A series of ternary FeCoNi-PBAs (from truncated octahedrons to cubic octahedrons and truncated cubes) were obtained by temperature control surfactant desorption ability. The derived FeCoNi−Ps showed better OER activity than RuO 2 , especially FCN-40-P exhibited optimal performance because its appropriate composition promotes OH − adsorption, as confirmed by XPS analyses. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are mostly binary metallic compounds with a cubic structure, which greatly limits the structure and component of derived transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) and affects their catalytic activities. This work focuses on regulating the morphology and composition of the PBA at the front-end to optimize the OER performance of the derived TMP. By temperature control surfactant desorption ability, we obtain a series of ternary FeCoNi (FCN-PBAs). With the increase of temperature, their morphologies change from truncated octahedrons to cubic octahedrons and truncated cubes, in which the Fe content basically remains unchanged and the Co/Ni ratio gradually decreased. Due to the synergistic effect among ternary TMPs, all phosphidation products (FCN-P) exhibit better OER activities than RuO 2 , among which FCN-40-P shows the best performance. As confirmed by XPS analyses, the appropriate chemical composition enhances the oxidizabilityof TM species, promotes the chemical adsorption of OH − , and accelerates OER kinetics.

Electrocatalytic materials with dual functions of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have received increasing attention in the field of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) research. In this study, bifunctional CoNC@NCXS catalysts were prepared by anchoring Co and N co-doped CoNC on N-doped carbon xerogel sphere (NCXS) based on the spatially confined domain effect and in-situ doping technique. CoNC@NCXS exhibited excellent ORR/OER activity in alkaline electrolytes with the ORR onset potential of 0.99 V, the half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.78 V at 10 mA cm −2 and the OER overpotential of 360 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . These excellent catalytic activities were derived from constructing composite active structures and enhancing electrocatalytic efficiency. The ZAB assembled with CoNC@NCXS catalyst had a discharge specific capacity of 710 mAh g −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which was superior to that of the Pt/C&RuO 2 catalyst-assembled battery (667 mAh g −1 ). After running for 150 h, the charge and discharge efficiency of the CoNC@NCXS battery decreased by only 12.8%, which confirmed the excellent stability of the CoNC@NCXS catalyst. The free energy diagrams showed that, CoNC@NCXS has lower energy barriers and higher potential than CoNC in key reaction steps. This study provides a new perspective for the structural design of highly active composite catalysts in energy storage and conversion.

Efficient production of green hydrogen energy is crucial in addressing the energy crisis and environmental concerns. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) poses a challenge in conventional overall water electrolysis due to its slow thermodynamically process. Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) offers an alternative anodic oxidation method that is highly efficient and cost-effective, with favorable thermodynamics and sustainability. Recently, there has been limited research on bifunctional catalysts that exhibit excellent activity for both OER and UOR reactions. In this study, we developed a selenium and iron co-doped nickel sulfide (SeFe-Ni 3 S 2 ) catalyst that demonstrated excellent Tafel slopes of 53.9 mV dec −1 and 16.4 mV dec −1 for OER and UOR, respectively. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the introduction of metal (iron) and nonmetallic elements (selenium) was found to coordinate the d-band center, resulting in improved adsorption/desorption energies of the catalysts and reduced the overpotentials and limiting potentials for OER and UOR, respectively. This activity enhancement can be attributed to the altered electronic coordination structure after the introduction of selenium (Se) and iron (Fe), leading to an increase in the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. This work offers a new strategy for bifunctional catalysts for OER and UOR, presenting new possibilities for the future development of hydrogen production and novel energy conversion technologies. It contributes towards the urgent search for technologies that efficiently produce green hydrogen energy, providing potential solutions to mitigate the energy crisis and protect the environment.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are the rate-controlling and/or energy-intensive reactions of numerous energy conversion and storage devices. It is a great challenge to attain a high catalytic efficiency with a single electrocatalyst towards these reactions simultaneously. Herein, a porous carbon was prepared by pyrolysis of chitin with the assistance of CoCl 2 and ZnCl 2 and a subsequent sulfurization process, which resulted in uniform loading of Co, N and S elements. The porous and modified carbon exhibited high catalytic performance towards ORR, OER and HER. Furthermore, the catalyst was used as air electrode to construct Zn-air batteries, which showed a power of 142 mW cm −2 and discharging and charging voltages of 1.3 V and 1.74 V at 1 mA cm −2 after 100 cycles, respectively. When used as both the anode and cathode for water splitting, the voltage to achieve a 10 mA cm −2 electrolysis current was 1.58 V which was stable over 75 h of operation. The performance enhancement is attributed to the etching effect which generates defects in both carbonaceous matrix and the Co 9 S 8 crystallites during the sulfurization , as well as the doping of S and N elements which creates multiple active sites.

Compared to monofunctional catalysts, the preparation of bifunctional materials with HER and OER activities holds greater significance for the separation of hydrogen from water electrolysis. In this study, we synthesized a self-supported bifunctional catalyst using ternary transition metal (Ni, Fe, Co) phosphide adorned with trace Pt for water splitting (P-Fe 6 Co 3 Ni/Pt/NF). As the main catalytic kernel toward HER, the Pt nanoparticles underwent uniform in situ reduction on the Ni foam, avoiding clustering due to the protective effect of iron and cobalt phosphides. This exposed more active sites, improving HER kinetics. In the OER process, the deposited Fe and Co were confirmed to play a pivotal role and will undergo oxidation to oxyhydroxides during structural reconstruction. In addition to enhancing conductivity, the Mott-Schottky test revealed that Pt can facilitate the formation of more active sites, leading to a lower potential for the OER reaction. Ultimately, P-Fe 6 Co 3 Ni/Pt/NF required only an overpotential of 32.8 mV in HER to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , demonstrating excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 259.9 mV at current density of 20 mA cm −2 . When employed as cathode and anode in water electrolysis, P-Fe 6 Co 3 Ni/Pt/NF necessitated only 1.6 V cell voltage to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This study provides a reference for designing other highly efficient Pt-based electrocatalyst, thereby promoting the widespread application of water electrolysis in hydrogen production.

Self-reconstruction of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, especially metal (oxy)hydroxides or oxides, has attracted much attention. Herein, an in-situ self-reconstruction process for Ni, Fe, Zn ternary-metal hydroxides (NFZ-TH) involving significant morphology transformation, and self-modulated electronic structure change of Ni and Fe owing to the etching of Zn species under anodic polarization potential is revealed. NFZ-TH derived materials, undergoing in-situ self-reconstruction (NFZ-TH-SR), exhibits superior OER performance (η = 217 mV @ j = 10 mA cm −2 geometry ) and excellent stability over a period of ~48 h. Nano-pitted surface resulting from etching of Zn species improves the electrochemical surface area. Meanwhile, in NFZ-TH-SR, large amounts of defects induced defect-/corner-sited Fe and adjustability of NiOOH species are verified by Mössbauer spectra and in-situ Raman spectra respectively. Density functional theory calculations give insight that both defect-/corner- sited Fe and Ni at next-nearest-neighbour defect-site have high activity. This paper helps understand that the proposed in-situ self-reconstruction strategy can improve the electrochemical performance of OER catalysts.

Although the intermittent energy-driven direct seawater splitting technology provides an unparalleled approach to achieving sustainable development, the severe corrosion via aggressive Cl – severely affects the stability and efficiency of the anode catalyst and limits its industrial application. Herein, a lattice Cl – functioned NiFe-LDH electrode (E-NF-LDH Cl or E-NF-LDH SW ) is firstly constructed by a minute-level electrochemistry assisted chlorine corrosion strategy, which presents enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and excellent anti-Cl – corrosion behavior for seawater splitting. The optimized E-NF-LDH Cl and E-NF-LDH SW deliver low OER overpotential of 355 and 384 mV to reach 1 A cm −2 current density in the 1 mol L –1 KOH and 1 mol L –1 KOH seawater, respectively, as well as excellent stability of E-NF-LDH Cl is maintained at 1 A cm –2 for 400 h in the 1 mol L –1 KOH and 1 mol L –1 KOH + 0.5 mol L –1 NaCl. MD (molecular dynamics) simulation and DFT (density functional theory) calculation confirmed that strong common-ion repulsion effect in IHP region repels free Cl – , forming high spin polarization centers and more single electrons to enhance the intrinsic activity of OER.
