Hydroxyl-mediated hydrogen spillover across spatially decoupled Co(OH)2@Mo2C tandem electrocatalyst

Shuangting Ren,Tian Han,Ruijing Zhang,Ruimin Xing,Rohit Jasrotia,Hamid Zouggari,Abdallah Albourine,Shanhu Liu

Alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is constrained by the Sabatier principle, making it challenging to simultaneously optimize water dissociation and hydrogen desorption. Here, we report a spatially decoupled tandem catalyst, Co(OH) 2 @Mo 2 C, that circumvents this constraint via a hydroxyl-mediated hydrogen spillover pathway. Mo 2 C serves as the *H generation site via rapid water dissociation, while adjacent Co(OH) 2 functions as the *H acceptor and recombination center, with abundant surface hydroxyl groups on Co(OH) 2 accelerating hydrogen spillover from Mo 2 C to Co(OH) 2 and sustaining water dissociation kinetics. CH 3 I poisoning experiments, corroborated by in situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, reveal the critical mediating role of hydroxyl groups in hydrogen migration. The optimized catalyst achieves only 43 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, and durability over 150 h at 0.5 A cm −2 in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer. This work establishes a generalizable interfacial engineering strategy to circumvent the Sabatier limitation by accelerating hydrogen migration on spatially segregating elementary steps. A spatially decoupled Co(OH) 2 @Mo 2 C tandem electrocatalyst shows that Mo 2 C rapidly dissociates water while Co(OH) 2 efficiently shuttles *H to accelerate H 2 release, where Co(OH) 2 abundant surface hydroxyl groups accelerate hydrogen spillover from Mo 2 C to Co(OH) 2 and maintain water dissociation kinetics. MWCNTs-OH-modified AgInS2 for highly efficient visible-light degradation of gaseous formaldehyde

Minghua Li,Guohui Chen,Youmei Chen,Qin Zhu,Ya Yan,Lanxia Liu

Photocatalysis is widely regarded as one of the most promising and environmentally friendly approaches for formaldehyde elimination. Currently, there is an urgent need for highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts. In this study, a graphite-hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs-OH)-modified AgInS₂ (AIS) composite, designated as MWCNTs-OH/AgInS 2 (MA), was successfully synthesized via a simple in situ low-temperature liquid-phase method. Compared to unmodified AIS, the 5 % MA composite exhibits enhanced visible-light absorption, accelerated electron transport, and significantly improved photogenerated electron-hole pair separation efficiency. Consequently, the 5 % MA demonstrates superior degradation activity for high-concentration formaldehyde (1710 ppm), achieving a degradation efficiency of 67 % after 2 h of visible-light irradiation. The incorporation of 5 % MWCNTs-OH enhances gaseous formaldehyde degradation efficiency by 28 %, regardless of whether a 420 nm cutoff filter is used. Additionally, the 5 % MA photocatalyst shows excellent recyclability and stability during prolonged photocatalytic tests. Mechanism studies based on spectroscopic, electrochemical, and active species analyses reveal the pathway for MA-mediated visible-light photocatalytic formaldehyde degradation. This work provides a practical strategy for designing efficient and environmentally benign photocatalysts for formaldehyde removal.

Structure-Dependent Electrocatalysis of Ni(OH)2 Hourglass-like Nanostructures Towards L-Histidine

Jianwei Nai,Zhengbo Chen,Haopeng Li,Fangyuan Li,Yang Bai,Lidong Li,Lin Guo

As the properties of nanomaterials are strongly dependent on their size, shape and nanostructures, probing the relations between macro-properties and nanostructures is challenging for nanoscientists. Herein, we deliberately chose three types of Ni(OH) 2 with hexagonal, truncated trigonal, and trigonal hourglass-like nanostructures, respectively, as the electrode modifier to demonstrate the correlation between the nanostructures and their electrocatalytic performance towards L -histidine. It was found that the hexagonal hourglass-like Ni(OH) 2 sample had the best electrocatalytic activity, which can be understood by a cooperative mechanism: on one hand, the hexagonal sample possesses the largest specific surface area and the tidiest nanostructure, resulting in the most orderly packing on the electrode surface; on the other hand, its internal structure with the most stacking faults would generate a lot of unstable protons, leading to an enhanced electronic conductivity. The findings are important because they provide a clue for materials design and engineering to meet a specific requirement for electrocatalysis of L -histidine, possibly even for other biomolecules. In addition, the hexagonal Ni(OH) 2 -based biosensor shows excellent sensitivity and selectivity in the determination of L -histidine and offers a promising feature for the analytical application in real biological samples. Graphical Structure-dependent performance : Three different types of Ni(OH) 2 with hexagonal, truncated trigonal, and trigonal hourglass-like nanostructures, respectively, were deliberately chosen as electrode modifiers to demonstrate the correlation between the structures and their electrocatalytic performance toward L -histidine (see figure). The electrocatalytic activity of these unique nanostructures depends not only their external architecture, but also on their relevant internal degree of crystallinity.

Co(OH)2 nanosheet arrays electrodeposited with palladium nanoparticles for hydrogen evolution reaction

Le Yang,Na Wang,Bairui Tao,Fengjuan Miao,Yu Zang,Paul K. Chu

Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles in combination with naturally abundant materials are stable and highly active catalysts for hydrogen production . Herein, Co(OH) 2 nanosheet arrays are prepared hydrothermally on graphene/nickel foam (graphene/NF) to produce Co(OH) 2 /graphene/NF which provides the desirable three-dimensional (3D) substrate for subsequent Pd electrodeposition to obtain Pd/Co(OH) 2 /graphene/NF. The materials exhibit excellent durability and catalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline environment such as a low overpotential of 124  mV at 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slop of 53 mVdec −1 . The excellent performance is attributed to the synergistic catalytic effects rendered by the nanostructured interfaces between the Pd nanoparticles and Co(OH) 2 nanosheet arrays as well as large surface area . The technique and materials have large potential in energy conversion applications.

Ultraefficient Catalysis of NiO/Ni(OH)2 for Hydrogen Generation via Mg Hydrolysis

Lingying Chen,Jiangchuan Liu,Qinke Tang,Qingzhu Wang,Zeyang Zhang,Kai Liu,Wenrui Li,Jiguang Zhang,Rui Shi,Yana Liu,Jun Wang,Yunfeng Zhu

Active metal hydrolysis is favored for safety and environmental friendliness in the field of hydrogen generation. In practice, however, dense oxide/hydroxide films form instantaneously on the metal surface; these passivating layers act as electronic insulators that severely curtail charge transfer and, consequently, suppress hydrogen evolution. Herein, a novel heterostructure of NiO/Ni(OH)2 was designed to enhance the electron transfer rate in the magnesium powder hydrolysis system, achieving rapid hydrogen production. Surprisingly, Mg-2 wt % NiO/Ni(OH)2 achieved a near 100% conversion rate, producing 880.2 mL g–1 of H2 in only 20 s at 30 °C. Its maximum hydrogen generation rate (mHGR) surpassed that of pure magnesium by 35-fold, and such hydrolysis performance is superior to all the reported results of catalyzed-Mg systems so far. Theoretical studies confirmed that the space charge region in NiO/Ni(OH)2 affects the electronic structure; thus, the correspondingly generated built-in electric field accelerated the hydrolysis of magnesium and greatly facilitated the electron transfer of the system. This work provides a strategy for designing nickel-based oxides/hydroxides catalysts for light metal hydrolysis and facilitates the understanding of the catalytic mechanism in multiphase catalytic systems.

Rational design of CoP@Ni(OH)2 bilayer nanosheets for high-performance supercapacitors

Jie Liu,Yu Chen,Yin Wang,Lu Liu,Qi Chen,Qingqing Shi,Luyi Huang,Xing Chen,Kun Xie

Cobalt phosphide has excellent electrical conductivity, metallic properties, and thermal stability. However, its application is limited due to the few active sites exposed in electrochemical reactions and poor structural stability. Herein, we adopt the strategies of material compounding and structural design to construct CoP@Ni(OH)2 bilayer nanosheets. The bilayer nanosheet structure can provide abundant transport paths for electrons and ions while also exposing more electroactive sites. In addition, the close contact and mutual support of the bilayer nanosheet structure can significantly alleviate material morphological collapse during charging/discharging processes, improving the cycle stability. The advantages of multiple components were combined in CoP@Ni(OH)2 to provide multiple valances for the faradaic redox reactions. The CoP@Ni(OH)2 manifested a specific capacity of 1697.8 C g−1 at 1 A g−1 and maintained a high rate capability of 35.0% even at 20 A g−1. Moreover, the electrode, had great cycling stability, retaining 83.9% of its capacity at 6 A g−1 after 7000 cycles. The asymmetric supercapacitor made of CoP@Ni(OH)2//activated carbon delivered 53.2 W h kg−1 at 800 W kg−1.

Coral-shaped PtRu/Ni(OH)2 electrocatalyst promotes selective hydrogenation of benzoic acid

Menghui Liu,Chenhui Wang,Zifan Cao,Aiqun Kong,Yusheng Gao,Jinli Zhang,You Han,Wei Li,Yan Fu

A series of 3D self-standing PtRu/Ni(OH)2/NF electrodes is fabricated for electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of benzoic acid (BA) to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CCA). The PtRu/Ni(OH)2 electrocatalyst with a unique coral-shaped architecture possesses outstanding charge transfer ability and abundant active sites. The optimized electrode achieves a BA conversion of 99.00% and a CCA selectivity of 100% in 0.05 M H2SO4 within 80 min, showing a record faradaic efficiency of 43.90% and high performance during 20 cycles of ECH. In situ Raman tests verify the mechanism of the selective hydrogenation of the aromatic ring and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electronic interaction between Pt and Ru in the PtRu nanoalloy as well as the electron transfer from the PtRu alloy to the Ni(OH)2 nanosheet tunes the electronic states of PtRu/Ni(OH)2, thereby enhancing the adsorption strength of BA on the electrocatalyst surface. This work offers a promising alternative to the traditional catalytic hydrogenation of BA.

Effects of Ca(OH)2 on the reinforcement corrosion of sulfoaluminate cement mortar

Song Yufeng,Zhang Yi,Shen Siyi,Pan Chenyu,Yan Dongming,Wang Zhiguang,Wang Su,Ruan Shaoqin

This study aims to explore the effects of different Ca(OH) 2 contents on the mechanical performance and corrosion behaviors of steel in Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement, where compressive strength, corrosion potentials of reinforcements, corrosion current density, pH of pore solution as well as mortar resistivity of CSA/Ca(OH) 2 mortar were researched, and the corrosion behaviors were further interpreted by the clarification of hydration phases through microstructural analyses. The initial results highlighted the positive effects of using adequate Ca(OH) 2 (~ 6%) in CSA mortar in terms of strength, yet its excessive addition could delay the subsequent hydration reaction of CSA. Meanwhile, with an increased quantity of Ca(OH) 2 , the amount of some hydration phases, such as Al(OH) 3 reduced, resulting from their reaction with Ca(OH) 2 . Finally, the corrosion current density increased with the reduced mortar resistivity when the reinforcement in CSA/Ca(OH) 2 system was corroded, and their relationship was also provided in this study.

Inerting characteristics of ultrafine Mg(OH)2 on starch dust explosion flame propagation

Hongming Zhang,Fangyuan Si,Jiawei Dou,Mingxuan Li,Long Wu,Tian Xie,Lanming Zhao,Chuyuan Huang,Xianfeng Chen

Experiments on the flame propagation of starch dust explosion with the participation of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 in a vertical duct were conducted to reveal the inerting evolution of explosion processes. Combining the dynamic behaviors of flame propagation, the formation law of gaseous combustion products , and the heat dissipation features of solid inert particles, the inerting mechanism of explosion flame propagation is discussed. Results indicate that the ultrafine of Mg(OH) 2 powders can cause the agglomeration of suspended dust clouds, which makes the flame combustion reaction zone fragmented and forms multiple small flame regions. The flame reaction zone presents non-homogeneous insufficient combustion, which leads to the obstruction of the explosion flame propagation process and the obvious pulsation propagation phenomenon. As the proportion of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 increases, flame speed, flame luminescence intensity, flame temperature and deflagration pressure all show different degrees of inerting behavior. The addition of ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 not only causes partial inerting on the explosion flame, but also the heat dissipation of solid inert particles affects the acceleration of its propagation. The explosion flame propagation is inhibited by the synergistic effect of inert gas-solid phase, which attenuates the risk of starch explosion. The gas-solid synergistic inerting mechanism of starch explosion flame propagation by ultrafine Mg(OH) 2 is further revealed.

CeO2-CDs clusters decorated Co(OH)2 nanosheets for improved photocatalytic ammonia synthesis

Huaiwei Zhang,Yifan Chen,Liang Bao,Jing-yuan Ge

The green synthesis process of photocatalytic ammonia production has received more and more attentions. Herein, a Z-scheme heterojunction with all-solid-state structures is constructed, in which carbon dots can act as electron transferring mediators. The photocatalytic measurement shows that the modified photocatalysts exhibit much higher activities, in which the ammonia production rates can reach above 232 µmol·g cal -1 ·h −1 under the light irradiation. The improved catalytic properties can be credited to the significantly increased number of photoinduced oxygen vacancies, the excellent visible-light adsorption abilities and photogenerated electron-hole separation efficiencies for the carbon dots bridged heterostructures. More hydroxyl and superoxide radicals can be simultaneously produced in the composites. This work provides reasonable guidance for applications in photocatalytic ammonia synthesis and a promising construction strategy of efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Synthesis of Graphene Quantum Dots Enhanced Nano Ca(OH)2 from Ammoniated CaCl2

Feng Wang,Yaoqi Gu,Jianrui Zha,Shuya Wei

Ca(OH)2nanoparticles are effective materials for cultural heritage restoration, hazardous substance absorption and photocatalyst. However, many methods are complex, and the particle sizes are usually above 80–100 nm, involving mediocre efficacy for application in the stone restoration field. In this work, Nano Ca(OH)2with diameters less than 70 nm and composited with Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) were successfully synthesized in aqueous media. The morphology and structure of the nanoparticles were investigated with TEM, HRTEM, XRD, Raman and FTIR. The particle size distribution and relative kinetic stability of the Ca(OH)2in ethanol were performed using a laser particle size analyzer and spectrophotometer. Firstprinciple calculations based on the spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) were carried out to study the reaction process and combination model. The nanoparticles, as prepared, are composed of primary hexagonal crystals and high ammoniated precursors, which have a positive effect on reducing the grain size, and interacted with the GQDs hybrid process. According to the First-principle calculations results, the energy variation of the whole reaction process and the bonding mode between Ca(OH)2and GQDs can be understood better.Keywords:Ca(OH)2;Graphene Quantum Dots;DFT;complex;nanoparticles

Hierarchical Co(OH)F/CoFe-LDH heterojunction enabling high-performance overall water-splitting

Mingliang Qin,Yamei Wang,Huaming Zhang,Muhammad Humayun,Xuefei Xu,Yanjun Fu,Marsil K. Kadirov,Chundong Wang

Due to the serious energy and environmental issues, hydrogen generation via water splitting has been regarded as a green and promising alternative strategy to the use of fossil fuels. Developing highly efficient and non-noble metal based dual-functional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to generate hydrogen and oxygen has become more critical. In order to fulfill the requirements of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), herein, we report novel hierarchical Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH heterostructured nanorod arrays fabricated via a facile two-step approach. The resultant Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH displays exceptional electrocatalytic OER and HER activity with a small overpotential of 240 mV and 130 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Further, the electrocatalyst revealed excellent long-term stability during a recyclability test for 37 h. The superior performance of Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH can be attributed to the synergistic effect at the interface of the Co(OH)F nanorods and the covered CoFe-LDH nanosheets. Meanwhile, Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH as a water electrolyzer to produce a current density of 10 mA cm−2 requires a small voltage of 1.58 V. This work paves the way for the design and construction of low cost and highly efficient 3D hierarchical electrodes for practical applications in electrocatalysis.
