Tannic Acid/FeIII Complexes Coating PAN Nanofibrous Membrane for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyeing Wastewater

Xuefei Chen,Lubing Zha,Fangmeng Zeng,Jie Meng,Tiandi Pan,Jindan Lv

Considering photocatalytic degradation technology has recently attracted great attention for dyeing wastewater treatment, the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous membrane coated with the TA/FeIIIcomplexes was proposed as a novel photocatalyst in this work. The successful self-assembly of TA/FeIIIcomplexes on the PAN nanofibrous membrane after layer-by-layer deposition of TA and FeIIIwas confirmed by the analyses of chemical structure, morphology, and hydrophilicity. With the number of coating cycles, more TA/FeIIIcomplexes coated on the PAN nanofibrous membrane, which contributed to the excellent photocatalytic activity. Whereas, when the coating cycles reached seven, the photocatalytic performance of the modified PAN nanofibrous membrane deteriorated due to the serious aggregation of TA/FeIIIcomplexes. Under optimum five coating cycles, owing to its great light absorbance capability, the modified PAN nanofibrous membrane achieved 98% degradation efficiency of RhB after 360 min illumination. This work would offer a promising high-performance photocatalyst for dyeing wastewater treatment. Keywords:photocatalysis;PAN nanofibrous membrane;TA/FeIIIcomplexes;coating cycle

A BaTiO3@polyacrylonitrile/poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofibrous composite membrane with high piezoelectricity based on the central combination design method and cross-electrospinning technology

Bo Yang,Xifeng Zhang,Jiakang Tang,Xinyu Zhu,Ming Hao,Xiaodong Hu,Yanbo Liu

The rapid development of piezoelectric sensors has been studied extensively, owing to their good flexibility, wearability, high sensitivity and low cost. However, some inorganic materials with good piezoelectricity cannot make sensors flexible, and the organic materials with good flexibility have a weak output electrical signal and low strength. In order to explore and optimize the preparation technology of piezoelectric sensors, a BaTiO3@polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibrous composite membrane (NCM) was prepared by cross-electrospinning technology and the central combination design (CCD) method. The morphology, structure, hydrophobicity, mechanical properties and piezoelectricity of the BaTiO3@PAN/PVDF NCMs were investigated. The BaTiO3@PAN/PVDF NCMs had the better hydrophobicity and mechanical properties compared with the pure PAN/PVDF NCM. The 5BaTiO3@PAN/PVDF NCM designed by CCD had a more uniform fiber diameter, and a more stable output voltage with a 46% improvement. With the help of cross-electrospinning technology and the CCD method, the NCM will be outstanding for the development of fabricating flexible wearable piezoelectric sensors.

Treating Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome with a Multifaceted Nanomedicine: Inhibition of PANoptosis and Enhancement of Lung Barrier Integrity

Yanhui Cui,Xueqin Wang,Caiyang Lu,Liling Ran,Zirui Guo,Jiayu Yao,Tian Yu,Xuanxi Liu,Fang Li,Changqi Li,Yingcai Meng,Wenhu Zhou

Acute lung injury (ALI)/Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition marked by severe inflammatory responses and disruption of the alveolar-capillary barrier, leading to high mortality rates and lack of effective treatments. Recent research has underscored the crucial role of programmed cell death pathways-pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis-in exacerbating inflammation and barrier dysfunction in ALI/ARDS. However, effective therapeutic agents targeting this process remain scarce. In this study, we reveal that PANoptosis, which integrates these cell death pathways through the PANoptosome complex, plays a central role in the pathogenesis and progression of ALI/ ARDS. The levels of PANoptosis-related molecules were significantly elevated in both the ALI mice and the clinical ARDS patient samples, highlighting it as a novel therapeutic target. Building on this insight, we developed a multifunctional nanomedicine, TPNs/Sal B, which integrates tea polyphenol-based nanoparticles (TPNs), a bioactive nanomaterial with anti-pyroptotic and anti-necroptotic properties, with salvianolic acid B (Sal B), known for its anti-apoptotic effects. Our results demonstrate that the nanomedcine TPNs/Sal B effectively inhibit PANoptosis, thereby attenuating lung tissue pathological damage, reducing inflammation, and improving lung epithelial barrier function in ALI models. Moreover, we identified LIM and SH3 protein 1 (LASP1) which may play an critical role in modulating alveolar epithelial barrier function during ALI/ARDS progression, and treatment with TPNs/Sal B effectively restored LASP1 levels. Our findings underscore the therapeutic potential of TPNs/Sal B as a targeted treatment for ALI/ARDS, offering a promising strategy for modulating PANoptosis and preserving lung function.

A novel hydrophilic-modified gas diffusion layer for proton exchange membrane fuel cells operating in low humidification

Zhicheng Liu,Li Zhou,Yanyan Gao,Manman Qi,Haiping Chen,Ming Hou,Zhigang Shao

Summary A novel hydrophilic-modified gas diffusion layer (GDL) through inserting the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) into the microporous layer is fabricated to elevate the performance of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) under low humidfication. The single fuel cell test confirms that the membrane electrode assembly with 3 wt% addition of PAN in the cathode GDL exhibits a maximum power density of 0.616 W cm −2 , which is 30% higher than that of conventional hydrophobic GDL (0.480 W cm −2 ) under low humidity. This significant enhancement in performance is attributed to the powerful wettability and the pore structure modification of the PAN. Besides, the introduction of PAN shows little influence on the performance of PEMFCs under full humidity. Our findings reported here shed new light on developing a robust GDL that can be used in both low and high humidification.

Facile papermaking fabrication of a PPS/PAN nonwoven composite membrane for efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation

Hani Abdulwahid Alhajj,Yan Yu,Yifan Liu,Qingqing Liu,Yu Chen,Xiaohui Mao,Liping Zhu

With the increasing challenges of industrial wastewater and oil spills, efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation has become crucial for environmental remediation. However, existing membranes often fail to deliver high flux, low energy consumption, and effective separation. This study introduces a scalable route wet papermaking coupled with a single-step TA/Fe 3+ metal-phenolic coating to fabricate a superhydrophilic TA/Fe 3+ @PPS/PAN membrane. The resulting membrane features a well-defined three-dimensional fibrous network that imparts high water permeability and robust structural integrity. The membrane exhibits a water contact angle of 0° and an underwater oil contact angle of 160°, indicating outstanding superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. These surface characteristics contribute to its outstanding antifouling performance. Under surfactant-stabilized O/W emulsion testing, the membrane achieved >98 % oil rejection across all oils (up to 99.15 % for dodecane) with consistently high pure-water fluxes of 1396–1603 L/m 2 h. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrated notable improvements in hydrophilicity, separation efficiency, fouling resistance, and operational stability under harsh conditions. Additionally, the membrane maintained consistent performance over 10 filtration cycles with minimal flux decline. Owing to these attributes, the TA/Fe 3+ @PPS/PAN membrane exhibits significant potential for practical oil-in-water emulsion separation, particularly under chemically harsh conditions.

Nanofiber-To-Hydrogel Conversion Enables a Structurally Integrated PAN Hydrogel with Multifunctional Properties for Efficient Water Treatment

Hongyan Huang,Fang Guo,Yong Wen,Chen Liang,Hang Zhang,Jinxin Liu,Si Cheng

Hydrogels, renowned for their remarkable water absorption capacity, have emerged as promising materials for oil–water separation. Nevertheless, the widespread application of traditional hydrogels remains challenging owing to their insufficient mechanical robustness, particularly in the hydrated and swollen state. In addition, hydrogels that simultaneously exhibit high strength, strong adhesion, excellent swelling capacity, and self-healing ability remain relatively rare. Herein, we present an “all-in-one” polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous hydrogel through a “from-nanofibers-to-gel” strategy by controlling the alkaline hydrolysis time of PAN nanofibers. The resulting hydrogel exhibits exceptional mechanical strength and toughness (over 3.36 MPa at a strain of 1230%), adhesion (greater than 520 kPa), self-healing capability, and particularly outstanding swelling performance (more than 3600%). Notably, the hydrogels that have reached swelling equilibrium still remain good mechanical properties and can return to their original state with minimal shrinkage (<5% volume loss) after dehydration, enabling cyclic use. Furthermore, by integrating the thermoresponsive polymer PNIPAm and the photothermal material MXene into a PAN nanofibrous hydrogel, a photothermal-responsive PAN/MXene/PNIPAm hydrogel (PMP hydrogel) were obtained which demonstrates high efficiency in separating dye-contaminated oil/water mixtures. Additionally, as a solar-driven water evaporator, the PMP hydrogel effectively evaporates and degrades dye solutions, enabling the recovery of clean water. Benefiting from the hydrogel’s exceptional mechanical strength and swelling capacity, the PMP hydrogel evaporator maintains 99.9% photodegradation efficiency for dyes and an 85.3% water recovery rate after 20 hydration–dehydration cycles.

Preparation of bead-like PAN/ZIF-8 nanofiber membrane for methyl blue adsorption by one-step electrospinning

Xiang Wang,Jiahui Zhang,Jiaxin Jiang,Gaofeng Zheng,Wenwang Li

Bead-like PAN/ZIF-8 nanofiber membranes, of which the commercial ZIF-8 nanoparticles attached to the surface of PAN nanofibers, were prepared by a simple one-step electrospinning method. The fiber structures, electrospinning parameters and adsorption capacity to methyl blue were investigated. ZIF-8 distributed uniformly on the nanofiber, and the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics. Maximum adsorption capacity was obtained as 224.37 mg/g at ZIF-8 concentration of 10 wt%, methyl blue concentration of 100 mg/L, and time of 180 min. Our work provides a simple, cost-effective process for the fabrication of MOFs nanofiber membranes with good adsorption capacity that suitable for practical commercial applications.

Ultrathin absorption-dominated PAN-derived porous carbon membranes enabled by Fe(acac)3 for efficient EMI shielding

Saijia Dong,Renyuan Yang,Xiaonan Liu,Yue Wang,Yupeng Hu,Daohai Zhang,Teng Zhou

Lightweight, ultrathin, and absorption-dominated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are highly desired to alleviate secondary electromagnetic pollution caused by conventional reflection-dominated shielding materials. Herein, Fe(acac) 3 -assisted PAN-derived porous carbon membranes were fabricated through nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS), freeze-drying, and high-temperature carbonization to achieve efficient absorption-dominated EMI shielding performance. The interconnected porous conductive carbon framework facilitated the dissipation of incident electromagnetic waves by providing continuous conductive channels and abundant internal scattering interfaces. Different Fe(acac) 3 contents were introduced to evaluate their influence on graphitization degree, electrical conductivity, and EMI shielding performance. Notably, with only 1 wt% Fe(acac) 3 loading, the obtained C-P-P/AcFe-2 membrane with a thickness of only 0.42 mm exhibited the best overall shielding performance, including an electrical conductivity of 7.12 S mm −1 , exhibiting an average EMI shielding effectiveness of 94.9 dB and a corresponding SE A value of 80.2 dB in the X-band. The SE A /SE R ratio reached 5.5, indicating obvious absorption-dominated shielding behavior. Meanwhile, the SSE t value reached 4013.4 dB cm 2 g −1 , demonstrating its lightweight shielding capability. This work provides a feasible approach for developing lightweight, ultrathin, low-filler-loading, and absorption-dominated EMI shielding materials. Ca-containing MgAl-LDH/PAN nanofiber membrane for fluoride removal and the recycled derivative for electrocatalytic oxygen

Min Li,Jiang Wang,Feiyu Liu,Xinze Song,Chunmei Su,Jinjia Liu,Shuai Wang,Jingchun Jia,Hongwei Ji,Chuncheng Chen

Fluoride contamination in groundwater and the disposal of spent adsorbents remain critical environmental challenges. Herein, a series of monolithic Ca-containing MgAl layered double hydroxide/polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membranes (Mg 2-x Ca x Al-LDH/PAN) were fabricated via electrospinning, which combine the high adsorption performance of LDH with the exceptional separability of nanofibrous matrices. Mg 1.9 Ca 0.1 Al-LDH/PAN showed 96.2% removal efficiency for 10 mg/L F - and maximum adsorption capacity of 16.7 mg/g at 25 °C in a batch reactor, and achieved a specific treatment rate of 150 L/kg/h in a fixed-bed column. The adsorption mechanisms were elucidated through combined experimental and DFT studies. More importantly, rather than following conventional regeneration routes, the spent fluoride-laden adsorbent was converted through pyrolysis into a fluorine-doped carbon-based electrode material. This upcycled material retained a high-surface-area fibrous structure and exhibited enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity compared to its non-fluorinated counterpart. This work presents an “adsorb-and-transform” paradigm that integrates efficient water decontamination with sustainable recovery of functional materials for energy applications. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-verified autoxidation and hydrolysis induce lipid degradation in pan-fried hand-grasp pancakes

Pengyuan Wei,Jingjing Lun,Yihang Ding,Jinying Wang,Linshang Zhang,Cong Sun,Kaizhou Yang

Auto-oxidation occurs during pan-frying of hand-grasp pancakes. • Hydrolysis was observed during the pan-frying process. • Lipid degradation was detected in hand-grasp pancakes during pan-frying. • The content of unsaturated fatty acids decreased following pan-frying. • The levels of unsaturated triacylglycerols declined post pan-frying. This study investigated the effects of pan-frying on fat quality in hand-grasp pancakes. The results demonstrated that fats exhibited significant quality deterioration: acid value increased by 50%–85%, peroxide value rose by 175%–490%, and p-anisidine value elevated by 65%–430%. The increments of conjugated diene value and conjugated triene value ranged from 20% to 50% and 35% to 73%, respectively. Meanwhile, the DPPH radical scavenging capacity decreased by 3%–30%, indicating a remarkable decline in antioxidant activity. Statistical analysis revealed consistent compositional changes in post-frying fats: the average free fatty acid (FFA) content in fats of the six brands of hand-grasp pancakes increased by 113.04%, whereas the average contents of unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) and unsaturated triacylglycerol (UUU) decreased by 1.81% and 4.82%, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements confirmed the presence of alkyl radicals (R•) in pancake fats verifying that autooxidation served as the primary oxidation pathway of fats in hand-grasp pancakes. This study provides theoretical foundations for the development of dedicated fats and quality improvement of hand-grasp pancake products.

Hybrid Conductive Hydrogels Reinforced by Core–Shell PANi@PAN Nanofibers for Resilient Electromechanical Stability at Subzero Temperatures

Yuxuan Chen,Chubin He,Xiuru Xu

Conductive hydrogels are attractive for flexible electronics, but their practical use is often limited by resistance drift during repeated deformation and performance degradation at low temperatures. Here, core–shell polyaniline-coated polyacrylonitrile (PANi@PAN) electrospun nanofibers were incorporated into a polyacrylamide/hydroxypropyl cellulose (PAM/HPC) hydrogel matrix to construct a hybrid conductive network. The PANi shell serves as an electronic pathway alongside ionic conduction in the hydrated polymer network, leading to markedly improved electromechanical stability. The resistance drift is about 11% after 2000 stretching–relaxation cycles at 0–100% strain, about 12 times lower than that of the nanofiber-free hydrogel. Stable electrical responses are maintained under large deformation, with a resistance drift as low as 3.3% over a strain range of 0–400%. The hydrogels show a conductivity of 0.32 S m−1while retaining high stretchability (>600%). An ethylene glycol/water binary solvent is used to suppress ice formation and improve moisture retention, allowing stable electromechanical performance at −15 °C over 500 cycles. The hydrogel also adheres reliably to human skin (about 10.25 kPa) and functions as a conformal strain sensor without extra fixation.

Synergistic integration of modified Cu foam and PAN fiber with wave-adaptive properties for interfacial solar evaporation

Ning Liu,Yujie Zhao,Yan Liang,Rong Tian,Siqi Wu,Bo Wang,Xi Yao,Yanping Wang,Dianming Li

As global water scarcity intensifies, interfacial evaporation emerges as a promising technology to address this challenge. However, the practical implementation of these systems is hindered by numerous factors, including water surface fluctuations and changing climatic conditions. The present paper proposes a self-floating composite membrane (PPHC) based on modified Cu foam and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres for the purpose of enhancing solar interfacial evaporation. It has been demonstrated that PPHC exhibits excellent bending resistance, thereby ensuring structural integrity during real-world water surface fluctuations. The integration of a hydrophobic foam metal design with a polymer fibre network’s capillary action enables the device to achieve high thermal localization and expeditious water transportation. In the context of solar irradiation, the PPHC exhibits an evaporation rate of 1.38 kg m −2  h −1 , thereby demonstrating consistent performance even within a high-salinity environment, characterized by a salt content of 25 wt%. Outdoor testing further validates its adaptability under varying weather conditions, with a peak evaporation rate of 2.96 kg m −2  h −1 recorded. This work presents a novel approach for constructing robust, durable, and highly efficient integrated interfacial evaporators.
