A novel gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is prepared based on the co-polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and hexafluoropropylene (HFP), the blending of the copolymer P(VDF-HFP) with poly(ethyleneoxide) and Poly(methylmethacrylate), and the absorption of liquid electrolyte of lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ) in ethylene carbonate (EC) + dimethyl carbonate (DMC) (1:1 v/v) as the plasticizer . This GPE has more amorphous region, and can accommodate larger amount of liquid electrolyte via its porous structure without leakage, which provide an ionic conductivity of 0.81 mS cm −1 at 25 °C. Furthermore, the GPE possesses a high electrochemical window of 5.0 V (vs. Li/Li + ), superior thermal stability, large Li + transport number and excellent interface stability to Li metal anode . The test cells with the GPE, Li metal anode and LiCoO 2 cathode show a superior cycling stability and rate performance. This GPE is promising to be applied to rechargeable Li batteries with high safety and long cycle life.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) based solid electrolyte has gained widespread interests owing to its excellent processability, acceptable ionic conductivity and low interfacial resistance toward electrodes. However, the extremely poor compatibility between PEO-based electrolyte and high-voltage cathode restricts its application in high-energy-density batteries, and recent researches indicate that it is also unstable to the Li anode. In this work, a stable ionic-liquid-containing poly(vinylidenefluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based electrolyte (IPL) with high ionic conductivity is engineered as an interlayer in PEO-based solid-state batteries, and the experimental results demonstrate that the IPL interlayer can effectively suppress the interfacial side reactions and helps to form a stable interface between PEO-based solid electrolyte and LiCoO 2 (LCO) cathode under high voltage. Moreover, the interlayer can enable stable Li stripping and plating for over 1000 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 , exhibiting an excellent stability against the Li anode. Therefore, the LCO/Li cells assembled with the IPL interlayer modified PEO-based electrolyte show high discharge capacity of 144.3 mAh g −1 and 169.7 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C under different voltage of 4.3 V and 4.5 V, and the capacity retention is 85.9% and 82.7% after 100 cycles, respectively. This study provides a novel idea for constructing high-performance PEO-based high-voltage solid-state Li batteries.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid electrolyte is one of the most promising candidates to be applied in solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries (SSLMBs), but its poor ionic conductivity at room temperature and incompatibility with LiCoO 2 /LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 cathode materials impedes the potential application in ambient-temperature and high energy density batteries. Herein, an ultrathin dual-salt PEO based polymer electrolyte (DPPE) with cross-linked network is engineered to tackle these issues. The formed cross-linked networks greatly increase the amorphous region of PEO and the DPPE exhibits high ionic conductivity of 0.57 mS cm −1 at 30 °C. Furthermore, a Li x BO y F z -rich and LiF-rich durable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer is generated on NCM622 surface on account of preferential decomposition of LiODFB, which isolate PEO based electrolytes from NCM622 cathode materials and effectively suppress the decomposition of PEO segments. Besides, the solvent-free in-situ polymerization method greatly reduces the thickness of DPPE membrane with only 20 μm and contributes to the formation of an optimum DPPE/cathode interface. Improved NCM622|DPPE|Li cell provides prominent cycle performance with a capacity retention of 94.7 % after 100 cycles at 4.2 V under 30 °C. This simple and effective strategy provides a new idea for the practical application of PEO-based solid electrolytes for ambient-temperature high-voltage SSLMB.

As society rapidly progresses, environmental issues, including water pollution and ecosystem degradation are steadily worsening. In this work, a novel functional nanofiber composite film based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and polyethylene oxide (PEO) were prepared by using electrospinning technique. The incorporation of PEO facilitated a more concentrated nanofiber diameter distribution. The prepared composite films were further modified with glutaraldehyde vapor to enhance their hydrophobicity and improve pore-making capabilities on the fiber surface. The nanocomposite fiber film, with its simple preparation process, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness , exhibits a promising prospect in addressing environmental challenges. Notably, the designed nanofiber films demonstrated remarkable efficiency in dye adsorption, owing to the high specific surface area of the fibers and the selective binding of active groups on the fiber surface to the dyes. Moreover, they showed good reusability, which is of great significance for adsorbents. Therefore, the obtained composite films from environmentally friendly preparation process has great application potential in wastewater treatment and dye removal .

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries configured with solid-state electrolytes (such as poly(ethylene oxide), PEO), featuring high energy density and safety, seem to have become one of the promising next-generation storage devices. Polysulfide shuttle and lithium dendrite formation still need to be tackled in PEO-based lithium sulfur batteries. In this work, we have developed a functional electrolyte additive, viz. MgF2 (or AlF3) with strong Lewis acidity, to resolve the above dilemma. The introduction of MgF2 restricts the migration of polysulfide species by Lewis acid–base interaction and thus, significantly enhances the coulombic efficiency (more than 98.5% @0.05C, 1C = 1675 mA g−1). Also, a robust SEI composed of LiF-rich and LixMg alloy layer is constructed on the anode, inhibiting the brutal growth of lithium dendrites. The MgF2-functional solid-state electrolyte achieves stable lithium plating/stripping cycles up to 500 h at 0.2 mA cm−2 in a Li//Li symmetric battery. A Li–S battery using such a modified PEO-based electrolyte delivers a high capacity of 982 mA h g−1 and enhanced cyclability (90% capacity retention ratio for 40 days' cycles) at 0.05C. This work provides a guideline for the design of high-performance, long-life PEO-based all solid-state Li–S batteries.

To address the problem of the serious capacity fading in lithium–sulfur batteries, a multi-functional PEO(polyethylene oxide)/LiFSI (lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide)/PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) (PLP) gel polymer electrolyte is exploited by coating PLP on a carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based sulfur cathode (PLP-S/CNTs) with a controlled thermal annealing process. The annealing process leads to the conformal infusion of PLP through the matrix of S/CNTs with retaining the amorphous phase of the PLP, which enhance the rate performance compared to the bare S/CNTs. The PLP coating drives the transformation of more elemental sulfur to Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S without forming intermediary product by restraining soluble-polysulfides formation. Furthermore, the PLP coating successfully inhibits the dissolution of Li 2 S x ( x > 4) in PEO and prevents the loss of active material in the cathode, which is confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Comprehensively, the PLP coating applied to the surface of the S/CNTs cathode exhibit significantly suppressed shuttle effect and greatly improve long-term cycle stability of the lithium–sulfur battery. The synthesized PLP-coated S/CNTs composite cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 573.6 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.5 C after 1 000 cycles, even achieving 318.1 mAh g −1 at an extremely high C-rate (6 C). which is unprecedented performance among the reported studies on coating technology.

Surface functionalization is an effective strategy to reduce the chemical reactivity between a Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) electrolyte and Li metal anode and optimize the interfacial contact of different components. Herein, sodium itaconate (SI) is introduced to modify the surfaces of LATP particles (LATP@SI) via a self-polymerizing process, and a composite solid electrolyte (CSE) composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and LATP@SI is fabricated. Benefiting from the protection of the SI nanolayer, LATP demonstrates chemical compatibility with the Li metal anode, while the reduced surface energy renders a good dispersion of LATP in PEO. Furthermore, abundant carboxyl groups in SI can offer a bridge between LATP and PEO to accelerate Li+ transmission. As a result, the as-prepared PEO-LATP@SI-6 CSE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 1.15 × 10–4 S cm–1 at 30 °C and 1.20 × 10–3 S cm–1 at 60 °C, a wide electrochemical stable window beyond 5.0 V, an improved Li+ transference number of 0.41, and an optimized lithium compatibility over 1200 h with Li dendrite free. The as-assembled Li||PEO-LATP@SI-6 CSE||LiFePO4 full battery delivers a high reversible capacity of 155 mAh g–1 and an outstanding capacity retention of 89% after 200 cycles. The Li||LiFePO4 pouch cell also successfully runs 50 cycles with a terminal discharge capacity of 116.6 mA h g–1. This study opens a new avenue to protect LATP. The developed surface functionalization technique promises a facile and efficient method for interfacial engineering to accelerate the practical application of LATP in solid-state lithium batteries.

Blending with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(oxyphenylene sulfone) (PESf) has been investigated to improve the properties of a polymer electrolyte based on a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix. The composite electrolyte shows a high ionic conductivity of 0.83 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 60 °C due to the significant inhibition of crystallization caused by the synergistic effects of PVA and PESf. The symmetrical cell Li/CPE/Li is continuously operated for at least 200 hours at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2 without the enhancement in the polarization potential. In addition, the all-solid-state LiFePO4/CPE/Li cells exhibit small hysteresis potential (about 0.10 V), good cycle stability and excellent reversible capacity (126 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles).

The hybrid structures of polystyrene- b -poly(ethylene oxide) (PS- b -PEO) block copolymer and inorganic nanoparticles with good stability and biocompatibility have potential applications in drug delivery and bioimaging. Spherical co-assemblies of PS 120 - b -PEO 318 and oleylamine-capped CdS quantum dots (QDs) are produced successfully in this work by adding water to a mixed common solvent, such as N , N -dimethylmethanamide (DMF)/chloroform, DMF/tetrahydrofuran (THF), or DMF/toluene. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum indicates that QDs are located at the interface between the core and shell of the spherical co-assemblies. The co-assembly process during water addition is traced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and turbidity measurement. Spherical co-assemblies are formed through budding from bilayers of the block copolymer and QDs. The morphology of the co-assemblies is related to the miscibility of the QD-dispersing solvents with water and the morphology changes from a spherical to a vesicle-like structure with DMF/toluene. Increasing THF content in the mixed solvent causes morphological transitions from spherical co-assemblies to multi-branched cylinders and micelles where QDs are located in the central core. Increasing chloroform content yields vesicle-like structures with protruding rods on the surface. The mechanism of the morphological transitions is also discussed in detail.

Lithium-conducting fillers play crucial roles in enhancing the ionic conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). By providing supplementary rapid Li+ transport channels, they substantially boost the practical viability of solid-state batteries. Nevertheless, the inherent incompatibility between polymers and inorganic fillers invariably leads to phase separation, which exacerbates the transport barrier for lithium through interfaces and impedes the full utilization of these swift channels. Herein, a novel “Rotaxane chemistry” has been employed to engineer stable lithium transport pathways at the Li7La3Zr2O12(LLZO)/PEO interface. This strategy confines PEO chains within molecular semicircles on the surface of modified filler, namely LLZO@Rotaxane, which loosens chain entanglement and breaks tight coordination of (EO)n–Li. This promotes Li spontaneous diffusion to and transport through the nano-confinement space in the interface as well as through the LLZO. Consequently, the proportion of lithium transported by LLZO and interface has surged from 28.4 % to 56.0 %, endowing the PEO-LLZO@Rotaxane with an outstanding ionic conductivity of 1.90 mS cm−1 at 60 °C and Li+ transference number of 0.74. Correspondingly, the batteries fabricated with PEO-LLZO@Rotaxane also manifest excellent cyclic and rate performance. Thus, this work offers novel insights into increasing the ionic conductivity by interface engineering.

Ionic-conductive polymers are appealing electrolyte materials for solid-state lithium-based batteries. However, these polymers are detrimentally affected by the electrochemically-inactive anion migration that limits the ionic conductivity and accelerates cell failure. To circumvent this issue, we propose the use of polyvinyl ferrocene (PVF) as positive electrode active material. The PVF acts as an anion-acceptor during redox processes, thus simultaneously setting anions and lithium ions as effective charge carriers. We report the testing of various Li||PVF lab-scale cells using polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix and Li-containing salts with different anions. Interestingly, the cells using the PEO-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) solid electrolyte deliver an initial capacity of 108 mAh g −1 at 100 μA cm −2 and 60 °C, and a discharge capacity retention of 70% (i.e., 70 mAh g −1 ) after 2800 cycles at 300 μA cm −2 and 60 °C. The Li|PEO-LiTFSI|PVF cells tested at 50 μA cm −2 and 30 °C can also deliver an initial discharge capacity of around 98 mAh g −1 with an electrolyte ionic conductivity in the order of 10 −5 S cm −1 .

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) employing polymer electrolytes are considered highly promising for their superior safety and elevated energy density. However, their development is impeded by the inherently low ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes and the poor interfacial stability at the lithium metal anode. To overcome these challenges, Li-doped three-dimensional ZnO (LZN) ceramic hollow tube networks were incorporated into a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). The abundant oxygen vacancies and strong interactions with LiTFSI facilitate lithium salt dissociation, thereby generating a higher concentration of free Li⁺ ions and enhancing Li⁺ transport. Consequently, the optimized PL-20LZN composite polymer electrolyte membrane exhibits a high Li⁺ conductivity of 8.12 × 10 –4 S·cm -1 at 60 °C. The solid-state LiFePO 4 /Li cell maintains stable cycling performance over 400 cycles, with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8 %. Moreover, relative to the pure PEO electrolyte, the full cell employing a high-voltage LiNi 0.6 Co 0.6 Mn 0.6 O 2 (NCM622) cathode exhibits notably enhanced cycling stability, suggesting that LZN hollow nanotubes play a key role in enhancing both interfacial and high-voltage stability.
