The coexistence of oxyanion-type and cationic heavy metals in complex aqueous systems poses a significant challenge for adsorption-based remediation. Herein, mesoporous silica-supported manganese‑lanthanum mixed oxides (Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41) were synthesized via an oxidation-coprecipitation strategy. The mesoporous silica framework effectively confined amorphous Mn/La oxides, suppressing oxide aggregation and manganese leaching. The as-prepared Mn x La 1-x @MCM-41 materials exhibited efficient removal of heavy metals, with maximum adsorption capacities of 57.3 mg g −1 for As(V), 141.6 mg g −1 for Cd(II), and 333.0 mg g −1 for Pb(II). By adjusting the Mn/La molar ratio, the adsorption behavior toward different metal species could be systematically regulated, with La-enriched compositions favoring As(V) uptake and Mn-rich materials exhibiting enhanced affinity toward Cd(II) and Pb(II). High removal efficiencies for all three heavy metals were maintained under multicomponent coexisting conditions. The composition-dependent adsorption behavior reflects a functional differentiation of Mn- and La-associated surface sites, enabling the simultaneous immobilization of oxyanion and cationic contaminants. Overall, this work demonstrates that integrating mesoporous confinement with compositional regulation provides an effective strategy for constructing stable and multifunctional adsorbents for multicomponent heavy-metal remediation.

The toxicity of radioactive metals arises from both chemical toxicity and radiotoxicity.210Pb(II) is a long-lived radionuclide in the decay chain of natural uranium series238U and exhibits extremely high toxicity. Both210Pb(II) and Pb(II) are widely present in natural water bodies. However, their combined toxicity remains unclear. Based on this, this study used zebrafish embryos as model organisms to investigate developmental toxicity, behavioral toxicity, and thyroid disruption effects, through single and combined exposure to Pb(II) (0, 1, 10, 100 μg/L) and210Pb(II) (0, 100, 1000 Bq/L) for 120 h by comparing the radiotoxicity of210Pb(II) with the chemical toxicity of Pb(II) and further exploring their combined effects. The results showed that following exposure to different environmental concentrations of Pb(II) and environmental activity levels of210Pb(II), exposure to Pb(II) alone caused an increase in the malformation rate of zebrafish embryos, a decrease in locomotor activity, and significant upregulation of thyroid-related genes, including thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRβ) and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the larvae. Exposure to210Pb(II) alone had no significant effects on zebrafish embryos. Notably, compared with the individual exposure groups, the toxic effects in the combined exposure group of Pb(II) and210Pb(II) were further significantly enhanced. Furthermore, correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between malformations in zebrafish embryos and the expression of key genes in the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) axis. These findings suggest that under combined exposure, the chemical toxicity of Pb(II) plays a dominant role, while the radioactive component210Pb(II) exerts a synergistic amplification effect. This study provides important scientific evidence for improving the environmental risk assessment of radioactive metals.

This study investigated the effects of different aging treatments (UV light, potassium permanganate, and sodium hydroxide treatments) on the adsorption of lead (Pb(II)) by PET microplastics, as well as the impact of Microcystis aeruginosa on lead adsorption by PET microplastics. The results indicated that different aging treatments significantly affected the adsorption capacity of microplastics, which could be attributed to the increased functional groups and surface porosity during the aging process. Kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption of Pb(II) follows a pseudo-second-order model, suggested that the adsorption process is mainly controlled by chemical adsorption. Intraparticle diffusion analysis further elucidated the migration mechanism of Pb(II) within the microplastics. On the other hand, the presence of Microcystis aeruginosa significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of microplastics. As the concentration of microalgae increases, the promoting effect of microalgae on Pb(II) adsorption by microplastics gradually strengthens, with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by microalgae playing a key role in facilitating Pb(II) adsorption. These findings suggested that microalgae could strengthen the role of microplastics as carriers of heavy metal lead and aggravate the risk of lead pollution diffusion in aquatic ecological environment.

The development of high efficiency filter membranes, particularly those capable of removing trace heavy metals from drinking water sources, is a global challenge. In this study, a dual-functional membrane (P m G n @PVDF) was successfully developed by doping graphene oxide (GO) and then depositing polydopamine (PDA). The pure water flux (Jw) was 188 LMH/bar and Pb(II) could be effectively removed in the water volume of 2106.36 L m −2 . Both PDA and GO performed positive functions. PDA layer exhibited a high affinity toward Pb(II) by chelating with amino groups. And doping GO maintained a high pure water flux, which had been decreased by the extra PDA layer. In addition, the effective treatment volume of Pb(II) was elevated to 5029.06 L/m 2 by the co-existence of citric acid, since neutral PbHL coordinated with neutral NH 2 and cationic PbL- interacted with NH 3 + through electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, P m G n @PVDF showed the excellent anti-interference performance in high salt and nature organic matters solutions. Thus, this novel dual-functional membrane could be considered as a competitive alternative of NF/RO for the efficient and advanced removal towards heavy metals from natural water.

At present, the functionalized Zr-based coordination polymer for heavy metal ions removal are primarily implemented via post-synthesis, and it is still a challenge to reduce the concentration of heavy metal ions to wastewater discharge standard. In this work, the 2,2′-dithiodipropionic acid modified Zr-based coordination polymer (named as Zr-DTDPA) was prepared by direct synthesis. It presented extraordinary adsorption ability in the process of removing Hg(II)/Pb(II). The optimum pH for Hg(II) and Pb(II) absorption was 4.0 and 6.0, respectively, and the saturated adsorption capacity reached 960 mg/g and 478 mg/g. The adsorption process can be exceedingly fitted by Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, which indicated that chemisorption played a dominant role. Additionally, the maximum selectivity coefficient reached 21.36 × 10 5 and 5605 for Hg(II) and Pb(II). Impressively, the residual contents of Hg(II) and Pb(II) were only 1.04 μg/L and 0.34 mg/L, which respectively reached the concentration standard of Hg(II) and Pb(II) in wastewater. Zr-DTDPA was easy to be regenerated, and the removal rate of Hg(II) had only decreased by 17.15% after ten consecutive cycles. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that the adsorption performance of Zr-DTDPA toward Hg(II)/Pb(II) was primarily determined by thiol/thio groups, and the adsorption mechanism was the interaction between sulfur atoms and Hg(II)/Pb(II) ions.

The sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/reduced graphene oxide (rGO-CMC) composite hydrogel was fabricated via environmental friendly one-step hydrothermal reduction method. The morphology, pore structure and surface properties of the as-prepared sample were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurement and zeta potential analyser, respectively. To investigate the adsorption behaviour of rGO-CMC for Pb(II), effects of contact time, temperature, initial concentration and pH were studied in detail. The rGO-CMC composite before and after adsorption of Pb(II) was analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to further explore adsorption mechanism. Compared with rGO, the adsorption capacities of rGO-CMC-3 composite for heavy metals including Pb(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II) were increased to 156.85, 35.70, 21.40, 20.85 and 15.80 mg g −1 , respectively. In addition, the rGO-CMC composite formed a complete aerogel after freeze-drying, which confirms its great potential as an easily separable adsorbent to remove heavy metals in aqueous solutions.

A novel amino-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs @SiO 2 -NH 2 ) was prepared via co-condensation using etraethyl orthosilicate and 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane for effective removal of Pb(II) from water. The Pb (II) adsorption efficiencies of MWCNTs and MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 were compared and the change of morphology features was assessed in batch adsorption experiments. The characterization analysis like XRD, FITR and XPS revealed that amino groups were successfully grafted on the MWCNTs. Adsorption results demonstrated that the best TEOS/APTMS loading ratio was about 10:3 based on their solution volume ratio. Compared to the poor Pb(II) adsorption capacity of pristine MWCNTs, the maximum adsorption capacity of MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 was greatly improved to 147 mg/g after amination treatment. Pb(II) adsorption onto MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 was strongly pH-dependent and the optimal aqueous pH was about 5. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model could well describe the Pb(II) adsorption process by MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 . Thermodynamics analysis illustrated that the Pb(II) adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. FTIR and XPS analysis of MWCNTs@SiO 2 -NH 2 after adsorption demonstrated the complexation between amino groups and Pb(II) played a vital role in the adsorption mechanism. Findings from the present study suggested that successful Pb(II) removal could be achieved using such novel adsorbent composite with optimized process.

Background Biochar has attracted considerable attention as a low-cost adsorbent comprised of carbon matrix and mineral for treatment of wastewater. The main purpose of this work was to manufacture CaCO 3 -rich biochars using crayfish shell as feedstock for removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution. Methods Pristine and magnetic biochars were prepared via direct pyrolysis and K 2 FeO 4 -promoted pyrolysis , respectively, and characterized by element analysis, BET, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD and XPS. Moreover, their adsorption capabilities toward Cu(II) and Pb(II) were investigated in aqueous solution. Findings A large amount of CaCO 3 was assembled on the pristine biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C, leading to 715.10 mg/g and 1682.87 mg/g adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Whereas, CaCO 3 and single phase Fe 3 O 4 were simultaneously introduced into the magnetic biochar with K 2 FeO 4 -promoted pyrolysis at 600 °C using 1/1 (g/g) ratio of K 2 FeO 4 to crayfish shell, where 417.05 mg/g and 974.10 mg/g maximum adsorption capabilities were obtained for Cu(II) and Pb(II) with 29.66 emu/g saturation magnetism, respectively. Cu(II) and Pb(II) were mainly adsorbed onto the biochars as carbonates and oxides by their interaction with CaCO 3 and carbon matrix.

Composites of MOFs and aerogels (MOFACs), as a new class of nanostructured materials , attract increasing attention due to their favorable adsorption properties. Herein, UiO-66-NH 2 -CS aerogel monolith (UNCAM) was synthesized by covalent crosslinking with hierarchical structure, exhibiting effective and stable adsorption of Pb(II) ions. The aerogel monolith containing 50% MOF particles possesses a ultra-low density of 15.8 mg·cm −3 , which is mainly attributed to the highly porous structure. Meantime, UNCAM can be described more suitable by the pseudo-second-order model and shows a higher mass transfer rate. The highest Pb(II) adsorption capacity of aerogel monolith is up to 102.03 mg·g −1 (1.612 × 10 6 mg·m −3 ), which is comparable to literature reports. The adsorption of Pb(II) by UNCAM is an endothermic and spontaneous process and consistent with the Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption process belongs to monolayer adsorption and chemisorption . Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of coordination interaction between N and Pb (II) were confirmed, and the O also played a synergistic role in adsorption on a certain degree. Lastly, The UNCAM retained 90.12% adsorption ability after three cycles. This strategy may provide an effective and versatile pathway to convert the bulk MOF particles into a shapeable form and sequentially branch out their applications in pollutant treatment fields.

Heavy metals such as Pb(II) pollutions in wastewater have been a serious environmental problem. In this study, we loaded polyamide–amine (PAMAM) on the surface of magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) via one-step thiol–yne click chemistry to obtain dendritic magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs-PAMAM) with high-density amine groups for the highly efficient adsorption of Pb(II). The synthesized MHNTs-PAMAM were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which confirmed the formed nanostructures and chemical features of MHNTs-PAMAM. And batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of pH and other variables on the adsorption amount. Here, TGA shows that PAMAM grafting on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) achieves a sufficiently high graft ratio of 6.1 wt %, which ensures sufficient active adsorption sites on the surface of the composite. With the increase of the grafted PAMAM generation, the functional group density and adsorption capacity of the material also gradually increased, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the material for Pb(II) was up to 194.4 mg g–1. The adsorption kinetics agrees well with the pseudo-second-order equations, and the equilibrium data can be described by the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.940).

The sensitive detection and efficient removal of heavy metal ions with high toxicity and mobility are of great importance for the environmental monitoring and control. Here, a novel SnS-decorated Bi 2 O 3 nanosheets heterostructure was synthesized via a facile hydro/solvothermal strategy. The as-prepared SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites presented impressive merits of the high surface area, mesoporous channels and fast electron transfer for the electrochemical reactions . And the synergistic interaction between SnS and Bi 2 O 3 significantly improved the “deposition-stripping” process involving electron transfer, mass diffusion and phase transition. With the unique characteristics, the SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites exhibited improved sensitivity and robust stability on the electrochemical detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with low LODs of 1.50 nM and 1.40 nM, respectively, and were successfully applied on the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap water and lake water samples. Furthermore, the electrochemical removal performance towards Cd(II) and Pb(II) was achieved as well. These SnS-Bi 2 O 3 nanocomposites could serve as an efficient platform on the detection and removal of heavy metal ions in environmental electrochemistry .

A novel nanocomposite based on black wattle (BW) tannin and nanocellulose was prepared and applied in heavy metal ions adsorptive removal from aqueous solutions. Firstly, nanocrystalline cellulose was oxidized by sodium periodate to get dialdehyde nanocellulose (DANC). BW tannin was then covalently immobilized onto DANC, which was used as both the matrix and crosslinker, to obtain tannin-nanocellulose (TNCC) composite. The resulting nanocomposite was characterized using FTIR, AFM, and TG. The successful immobilization was confirmed by the chromogenic reaction between FeCl 3 and TNCC and FT-IR analysis. AFM images revealed that TNCC was ellipsoidal particles with lengths ranging from 100–400 nm. Zeta potential measurement showed that TNCC was negative charged at a pH range from 1–12. Compared to the original tannin, the thermal stability of TNCC was slightly increased by the addition of nanocellulose. TNCC demonstrated the maximum adsorption efficiency at pH 2 for Cr(VI) and pH 6 for Cu(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The adsorption for these three metal ions followed pseudo second-order kinetics, indicating the chemisorption nature. The adsorption isotherms all fitted well with the Sips model, and the calculated maximum adsorption capacities were 51.846 mg g −1 , 53.371 mg g −1 and 104.592 mg g −1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr (VI), respectively.
