Indium-doped mesoporous Bi2S3-based electrochemical interface for highly sensitive detection of Pb(II)

Shiqi Wang,Jinrui Li,Yanqiu Fu,Zhongxin Zhuang,Zhonggang Liu

As a global toxic pollutant, lead (Pb(II)) causes serious risks for living organism and the environment, it is thus of critical importance to explore a facile and efficient sensing protocol for the detection of Pb(II). Herein, we proposed the flower-like In-doped Bi 2 S 3 (IDB) with mesoporous nanostructure as an electrochemical sensing interface for the Pb(II) detection, which was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The fabricated IDB/GCE exhibited a high sensitivity of 78.1 μA·μM −1 and a satisfied detection limit (LOD) as 0.017 μΜ with robust stability and remarkable anti-interference capability. Plausible mechanism of electrochemical sensing of Pb(II) was proposed based on electrochemical and characterization results, where the mesoporous IDB could provide numerous electrocatalytic active sites, and efficiently accumulate target Pb(II) onto the electrode surface, leading to the improved electrochemical performance. Besides, the complex state of Pb(II) was analyzed with IDB/GCE, and a tentative reference on the detection of complex state of Pb(II) was achieved with the favorable results. Furthermore, the fabricated IDB/GCE could be applied for the analysis of Pb(II) in real water sample with high reliability.

Enhanced removal of Pb(II) and organics by titanate in a designed simultaneous process

Jingtao Bi,Jingkang Wang,Xin Huang,Qingqing Tao,Miao Chen,Ting Wang,Hongxun Hao

As a superior cation-exchanger and photocatalyst, titanate exhibited efficient ability for heavy metals decontamination and organics degradation. However, no reports about simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organics by using titanate has been found. The influence of intercalated heavy metal on the photocatalytic performances of titanate and its mechanism was poorly understood. In this work, titanate materials with different amounts of intercalated Pb(II) were prepared. Analytical TEM mapping images showed the uniform distributions of intercalated Pb(II) in titanate, excluding the formation of segregated nano-domains comprising either titanate or Pb-titanate. The crystalline and luminescent properties, which are relevant with the specific surface area and migration/recombination of the charge carriers, were considered as critical factors influencing the photocatalytic performance since the surficial charge states and derived band structures of titanate with different amounts of Pb(II) were almost identical. Steady state reaction experiments revealed that the catalytic activity of titanate after Pb(II) intercalation first sharply increased for 0.10Pb-Titanate and then decreased with further Pb(II) insertion. Better catalytic performance of 0.10Pb-Titanate was attribute to larger specific surface area, superior sorption affinity, higher excited charge carrier’s quantity and satisfied luminescence lifetime. Finally, it was observed that simultaneous removal strategy by pure titanate not only enhanced the sorption of lead ions than individual removal system but also promoted the photocatalytic ability than 0.10Pb-Titanate, which provides a new idea for the utilization and optimization of titanate materials for simultaneous decontamination of heavy metals and organics.

Sulfhydryl functionalized covalent organic framework as an efficient adsorbent for selective Pb (II) removal

Ying Cao,Xue Hu,Changqian Zhu,Shuangxi Zhou,Rui Li,Huilan Shi,Shiyu Miao,Mohammadtaghi Vakili,Wei Wang,Delin Qi

A key challenge in environmental remediation is the design of adsorbents with appropriate pore size and accessible sorption sites to achieve the rapid uptake and high capacity for the removal of their target pollutants. Covalent organic framework (COF) materials with adjustable pore size and designed skeleton structure are a new class of adsorbent materials for environmental remediation. Here, a novel COF was synthesized by a mild solvothermal solution-suspension method for efficient Pb (II) removal from aqueous solution. The prepared COF material displayed a typical lamellar structure , and the sulfhydryl groups on the COFs skeleton were confirmed to behave as active adsorption sites for Pb (II) capture. Sulfhydryl functionalized COF (COF-SH) reached adsorption equilibriums within 48 h and had a maximum adsorption capacity for Pb (II) of 239 mg/g based on Langmuir fitting. The adsorption capacity of COF-SH for Pb (II) removal is much higher than that of other conventional adsorbents, such as shell activated carbon and resin. Moreover, the selective adsorption performance of COF-SH to Pb (II) in the presence of coexisting heavy metal is superior, and its unique properties are derived from its soft sulfur-based chelating groups allowing selective capture of soft or relatively soft metal ions . The results presented here reveal the exceptional potential of COFs for high performance in environmental remediation.

Amylopectin Regulated Mineralization of Calcium Carbonate and Its Application in Removing of Pb(II)

Qinjiang Zhao,Lihong Zhou,Jie Du,Guanghui Wang,Xiangjun Pei

As an ecological and environment-friendly building material, sticky rice mortar has attracted the attention of many researchers. Amylopectin is the most important organic matter of it, which can improve the mechanical properties and durability of sticky rice mortar by inducing mineralization of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ). However, amylopectin induced formation of CaCO 3 has not been reported. In this paper, mineralization of CaCO 3 induced by gelatinized amylopectin is investigated. For comparison, the different morphologies of CaCO 3 are studied in the presence of Mg 2+ , Fe 3+ . Moreover, these CaCO 3 products with different morphologies are used to clean the waste water. The results indicate that gelatinized amylopectin is conducive to formation of pumpkin-like vaterite. It forms uniform rod and dumbbell-shaped calcite in the presence of Mg 2+ , form calcite with stepped depressions in the presence of Fe 3+ . The adsorption of Pb(II) can reach extremely high level (1445.86 mg g −1 ) with the rod-like calcite.

Adsorption of Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions on humus-like substances modified montmorillonite

Kun Jiang,Kun Liu,Qian Peng,Muyang Zhou

Montmorillonite (MMT) and humus have a good adsorption effect on heavy metal ions . This study proposed a synthetic method for a novel composite of humus-like substances/MMT (HLS-MMT) by introducing humus precursors into the interlayer domain of MMT and then forming HLS through in situ catalytic polycondensation reaction. The structure and morphology of samples were characterized by XRD , FTIR, and SEM , which demonstrated the successful loading of HLS on the internal and external surfaces of MMT. The experimental results showed that the loading of HLS on MMT was very stable, and the adsorption capacity of the modified MMT for lead and zinc ions was greatly enhanced. The effects of single-factor experiments showed that the pH value was the key factor affecting the adsorption process . In addition, the adsorption process was found to be in good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model . The competitive adsorption experiment displayed that HLS-MMT had a higher affinity for Pb ions than Zn ions, and the cycling experiment presented that the adsorbent had good regeneration and cycling performance. This study shows that HLS-MMT is a novel adsorbent with a good capacity to separate and enrich Pb and Zn ions similar to ion-exchange resin.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution by polyacrylic acid grafted magnetic chitosan nanocomposite

Dalin Hu,Zhenwei Lian,Hongyi Xian,Ran Jiang,Nan Wang,Yingying Weng,Xiaowu Peng,Sanming Wang,Xiao–Kun Ouyang

A creative combination of chitosan with polyacrylic acid (PAA) improves the acidity resistance of chitosan and increases its potential in the field of adsorption. In order to facilitate recovery, magnetic nanoparticles were incorporated in CS–PAA to obtain a magnetic-CS–PAA (MCS–PAA) nanocomposite. The physical and chemical characteristics of the composite adsorbent MCS–PAA were determined by SEM, TEM, FTIR, EDX , XRD, and XPS. This environmental-friendly, magnetic, composite adsorbent showed significantly better adsorption performance than those of the individual adsorbents alone. The maximal adsorption capacity was 204.89 mg/g according to the Langmuir isotherm model, when the concentration of Pb(II) was 100 mg/L at the equilibrium time of 70 min. The main adsorption mechanism was the complexation between the carboxyl, amino, and hydroxyl groups in MCS–PAA and Pb(II). Further, introduction of PAA also improved the acid resistance of CS. The new adsorbent MCS–PAA is thus expected to facilitate a wider range of applications for chitosan in the adsorption of Pb(II).

Synthesis of Amino-Functionalized Waste Wood Flour Adsorbent for High-Capacity Pb(II) Adsorption

Yi Tan,Kaili Wang,Qian Yan,Shifeng Zhang,Jianzhang Li,Yong Ji

An innovative wood flour-based adsorbent for Pb(II) removal was synthesized via a cost-effective and environment-friendly method, which could be high on the priority list owing to its high absorption capacity. By increasing the specific surface and introducing functional groups through delignification and amination, the experimental adsorption capacity of the prepared adsorbent could reach 189.9 mg/g in 180 min (pH = 4, T = 293 K, dosage = 1 g/L, and ion concentration = 300 mg/L). This value is higher than most of those achieved in previous studies on wood-based adsorbents. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models were utilized to describe the adsorption kinetics and isotherms, respectively. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and temperature on the adsorption efficiency were also evaluated. With a low decrease rate of 20.2% in five cycles, the adsorbent possessed reusability. The adsorbents exhibited high selectivity in the Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) mixed solution, and the selectivity coefficient k of adsorbents to Pb(II) could reach approximately 2.74 in triad. The method could prompt the development of cost-effective methods for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

Mechanistic insights into Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution by green reduced graphene oxide

Ze Lin,Xiulan Weng,Li Ma,Binoy Sarkar,Zuliang Chen

As one of the important contaminants in wastewater, Pb(II) becomes a severe public health problem because of its non-biodegradable and persistent nature. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) prepared using green tea extract was successfully used to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. A 96.6% of Pb(II) was removed at 10 mg/L Pb(II) and 0.4 g/L RGO with pH 4.5 at 30 °C, and the adsorption of Pb(II) by RGO followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. To confirm the removal mechanism, various methods (Transmission Electron Microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction) were used to characterize RGO before and after Pb(II) adsorption. The results showed that the surface of RGO after Pb(II) adsorption became rougher, and the interlayer spacing increased from 0.36 nm to 0.40 nm, indicating that Pb(II) was adsorbed on the surface and between the layers of RGO. Finally, the adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) by RGO was proposed, Pb(II) was adsorbed on the surface of RGO via the electrons on the π-bond on RGO and the interaction of Pb(II) with oxygen-containing functional groups, which were supported by the Fourier Transform Infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results.

Effects of different metal ions (Ca, Cu, Pb, Cd) on formation of cyanobacterial blooms

Peng Gu,Qi Li,Weizhen Zhang,Zheng Zheng,Xingzhang Luo

Eastern China is a typical region that suffers from harmful cyanobacterial blooms. Numerous studies have focused on bloom formation mechanisms; however, the detailed mechanisms remained unclear. Our study explored the influence of four metal ions (Ca, Cu, Pb and Cd) on Microcystis aeruginosa to determine their effects on bloom formation. We found that Ca concentrations higher than 100 mg L −1 contributed to cyanobacterial bloom formation. The presence of Ca triggered the anti-oxidation process and promoted the secretion of extracellular polysaccharides , thus inducing aggregation of algal cells and enhancing their buoyancy 2.1-fold more than the control ( p <0.05). The reverse regulation of dissolved CO 2 to bicarbonate by carbonic anhydrase formed a large amount of carbonate and decreased the growth rate by 38–56%. Cu (>0.1 mg L −1 ) presented significant toxicity to algal cells while Pb (>1 mg L −1 ) suppressed the algal growth rate due to the acidic condition. Cd (<0.1 mg L −1 ) exhibited no apparent toxicity to the algae. Furthermore, as the buoyancy increased, Cd was likely to facilitate the formation of cyanobacterial blooms, which needs further research. These findings can provide a theoretical basis for eutrophic lake management and contribute to the development of water quality and wastewater discharge standards.

Synthesis of novel magnetic sulfur-doped Fe3O4 nanoparticles for efficient removal of Pb(II)

Huang Xueqiong,Kong Long,Huang Shouqiang,Liu Min,Li Liang

In this work, we report the synthesis of magnetic sulfur-doped Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 :S NPs) with a novel simple strategy, which includes low temperature multicomponent mixing and high temperature sintering. The prepared Fe 3 O 4 :S NPs exhibit a much better adsorption performance towards Pb(II) than bare Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. FTIR, XPS, and XRD analyses suggested that the removal mechanisms of Pb(II) by Fe 3 O 4 :S NPs were associated with the process of precipitation (formation of PbS), hydrolysis, and surface adsorption. The kinetic studies showed that the adsorption data were described well by a pseudo second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption isotherms could be presented by Freundlich isotherm model. Moreover, the adsorption was not significantly affected by the coexisting ions, and the adsorbent could be easily separated from water by an external magnetic field after Pb(II) adsorption. Thus, Fe 3 O 4 :S NPs are supposed to be a good adsorbents for Pb(II) ions in environmental remediation.

Defect-Engineered MOF-801/Sodium Alginate Aerogel Beads for Boosting Adsorption of Pb(II)

Mengshuo Du,Yingying Wang,Youyu Cao,Wenzhi Tang,Zhonghong Li

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive adsorbents for heavy metal capture due to their superior stability, easy modification, and adjustable pore size. However, their inherent microporous structure poses challenges in achieving a higher adsorption capacity. Defect engineering is considered a simple method to create hierarchical MOFs with larger pores. Here, we employed l-aspartic acid as a mixed linker to bind Zr4+ clusters in competition with fumaric acid of MOF-801 to create defects, and the pore size was increased from 4.66 to 15.65 nm. Mercaptosuccinic acid was subsequently used as a postexchange ligand to graft the resultant MOF-801 by acid-ammonia condensation to further expand the pore size to 22.73 nm. Notably, the −NH2, −COOH, and −SH groups contributed by these two ligands increased the adsorption sites for Pb(II). The obtained defective MOF-801 with larger pores was thereafter loaded onto sodium alginate to form aerogel beads as adsorbents, and an adsorption capacity of 375.48 mg/g for Pb(II) was achieved, which is ∼51 times that of pristine MOF-801. The aerogel beads also exhibited outstanding reusability with a removal efficiency of ∼90.23% after 5 cycles of use. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) included ion-exchange interaction, as well as chelation interactions of Pb–O, Pb–NH2, and Pb–S. The versatile combination of defect engineering and composite beads provides novel inspirations for MOF modification for boosting heavy metal adsorption.

Gangue-Based SiO2 Aerogel Used for Pb(II) Adsorption in Wastewater and Mechanism Analysis

Liu Xu,Kong Xiaomin,Wen Hao,Wang Yue,Wu Meili,Yin Hongwei,Qin Wei,Wang Manli,Pei Jun,Qu Miaoming

Coal gangue, a byproduct of coal mining with massive generation, presents a major challenge for resource utilization. In this study, SiO 2 aerogel was successfully fabricated from coal gangue, via a facile and cost-effective approach. The aerogel boasts an intricate network framework structure internally and functions as a mesoporous material with measurements of 154.5662 m 2 ·g −1 for specific surface area and 7.9557 nm for average pore size. Additionally, exploring the adsorption capabilities of SiO 2 aerogel concerning Pb(II) in wastewater, the research revealed insights. The results demonstrated that the maximum Pb(II) removal efficiency reached 94.09% under pH 6, aerogel dosage of 1.5 g·L⁻ 1 , and initial Pb(II) concentration of 80 mg·L⁻ 1 . The adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, suggesting a favorable and predominantly monomolecular layer chemisorption, and the intraparticle diffusion model suggests internal diffusion behavior during adsorption. The SiO 2 aerogel exhibited specific adsorption behavior towards Pb(II). This study offers a promising avenue for repurposing coal gangue while addressing the issue of Pb(II)-contaminated wastewater.
