Deoxygen is a crucial step for landfill gas (LFG) recycling and purification. Pt/γ-Al 2 O 3 is the most active catalyst for LFG deoxygen via catalytic methane oxidation . It is challenging but significant to further improve the performance of this type of catalyst. In regard of homogeneous and heterogeneous activation of methane by superacids , here we demonstrate LFG deoxygen via catalytic methane oxidation using a solid superacid catalyst, Pt/SO 4 2- /Al 2 O 3 , synthesized using pre-sulfated γ-Al 2 O 3 support by impregnated with sulfuric acid . In comparison to Pt/γ-Al 2 O 3 , Pt/SO 4 2- /Al 2 O 3 catalysts exhibit exceptionally improved activity and minimum complete O 2 conversion at a temperature of 264 ℃, a decrease of about 51 ℃. This value is superior to the state-of-the-art Pt-based deoxygen catalysts. Characterizations and theoretical calculations indicate that sulfation enhances the amount of acid sites on γ-Al 2 O 3 support and induces electron deficiency of the supported Pt species (+0.28|e|), thus boosting the low-temperature activity. Furthermore, the Pt/SO 4 2- /Al 2 O 3 catalyst maintained its initial activity after six runs without any detectable coke deposition. This discovery offers simple and effective strategies to precisely design higher performance application-oriented Pt based deoxygen catalysts.

This work reports the synthesis of a series of carbon supported Pt-Pd-Cu (Pt-Pd-Cu/C) nano-catalysts for formic acid oxidation. The trimetallic catalysts were prepared by a one-pot protocol through reduction of Pt, Pd and Cu ions using ethylene glycol and sodium citrate as the reducing and stabilizing reagents. XRD characterization suggests that Pt-Pd-Cu alloys with different lattice parameters can be successfully prepared through adjusting the atomic ratios of Pt, Pd and Cu ions in the precursor solutions. The average crystal sizes of the Pt-Pd-Cu/C catalysts are in the range of 2.7-3.1 nm. TEM images shows that the metallic nanoparticles are well dispersed on the carbon surface, with Pt 1 Pd 3 Cu 3 /C catalyst showing obvious aggregation. XPS was carried out to analyze the surface compositions, as well as the chemical states of the novel metals in the catalysts. The real atomic ratios of the metals in the catalysts based on ICP-OES evaluation are consistent with the stoichiometric values. Electrochemical analysis suggests that the activities the Pt-Pd-Cu/C catalysts towards formic acid oxidation are dependent on the composition of the catalysts, with Pt 1 Pd 4 Cu 2 /C exhibiting the best performance. A mass normalized peak current density of 3.02 A/mg (Pt+Pd) was observed on Pt 1 Pd 4 Cu 2 /C catalyst.

Energy shortage and environmental pollution problems force us to find low-energy consume methods to deal with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this work, Pt-P25 was synthesized through a simple wet impregnation method and calcination method. The study showed that different calcination temperatures and calcination atmospheres affected the activation state of Pt species, showing significant differences in the photothermal catalytic toluene oxidation reaction efficiency. The Pt-P25-800N sample activated in a nitrogen atmosphere at 800 oC exhibits better activity compared to other samples, achieving a toluene conversion rate of 95% and a mineralization rate of 65% under a light intensity of 400 mW/cm2. Characterization results demonstrate that low-valent Pt species are positively correlated with toluene oxidation activity and play a major role in the reaction. The ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis) and infrared (IR) components in the spectrum all contribute to the toluene oxidation process. The catalytic bed is heated to the required temperature mainly through thermal effects and crosses the reaction energy barrier. The traditional photocatalytic process over TiO2 also plays an auxiliary enhancement role. Due to the efficient conversion capability of the active sites, Pt-P25-800N achieves long-term stability of at least 50 hours under low light intensity input and water vapor conditions, accompanied by minimal accumulation of intermediate products. The above results explain that the comprehensive effect between active Pt species and photothermal catalysis jointly achieves efficient degradation of VOCs and alleviates the energy and environmental crisis.

The multilayer composite films consisting of poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) functionalized graphene (PDDA-rGO) and phosphomolybdic acid functionalized graphene (PMo12-rGO) were prepared by layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The {PDDA-rGO/PMo12-rGO}n multilayer composite films were used as a support for electro-deposition of Pt particles in situ. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed for examining the composition, structure, and morphology of the catalyst. Results revealed that the Pt/{PDDA-rGO/PMo12-rGO}n catalyst is successfully prepared and that the multilayer composite films support improves the dispersion of the Pt particles. CV and chronoamperometry were employed to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation. Results revealed that the electrocatalytic activity and stability of the Pt/{PDDA-rGO/PMo12-rGO}3 catalyst for methanol oxidation are considerably improved in comparison with that of the Pt/GCE catalyst. The current density for the oxidation of methanol increased from 0.66 mA/cm2 to 1.21 mA/cm2. In addition, the ratio of the forward current density to the backward current density (If/Ib) was 1.92 for Pt/{PDDA-rGO/PMo12-rGO}3 catalyst, corresponding to 1.3 times that of the Pt/GCE catalyst. This result indicated that the multilayer composite films remarkably enhanced the electrocatalytic activity regarding methanol oxidation.

The interfaces in heterogeneous catalysts play an important role in their performances by either directly providing active sites through the synergistic effects from different catalyst compositions or indirectly modulating the state of active sites. However, constructing abundant interfaces in heterogeneous catalysts is a key scientific challenge since it requires the high dispersion of all catalyst compositions involved in substrate activation. A surface reduction strategy is proposed as the solution for this challenge, which creates a pyramid-type catalyst, (Pt/4nmCeO2)/SiO2, with maximized interfacial Pt–CeO2 sites as an example. Pt is chemically bound in surface reductive centers of 4 nm CeO2 nano-islands, generating stable Pt2+ sites with moderate hydrogenation capacity compared to Pt0 sites on bulk CeO2 and SiO2. This work facilitates the development of heterogeneous catalysts by presenting a high level of controlling the local chemical environment within nanomaterials.

With the growing issue of antibiotic resistance, it has become increasingly crucial to develop highly efficient antimicrobial materials. While the single-component nanozyme systems exhibited some catalytic activity, their efficiency remains suboptimal. This study presents a Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt hybrid nanozyme composed of photothermal agents and nanozymes, which leverages the photothermal effect to enhance nanozyme activity and achieve efficient antimicrobial effects. The composite material exhibited peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity, effectively converting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Meanwhile, the Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt material demonstrated high photothermal conversion ability, which not only promoted the generation of ·OH under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, but also facilitated copper (Cu2+) ions release from the CuWO4 nanozyme, thereby further augmenting its catalytic activity. After 4 to 5 min of light irradiation, the Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt nanozyme exhibited significant antimicrobial performance against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In summary, this work presents a Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt nanoplatform that utilizes the photothermal effect to enhance the chemodynamic antimicrobial activity, showcasing its potential applications in antibiotic-free antimicrobial fields.

The production of a large number of metal oxide semiconductor materials is more for design needs, while theoretical exploration is relatively less concerned. In this work, WO 3 nanoparticles were prepared by the tungstic acid thermolysis method, and the catalysts of Pt and Ru were loaded on the surface of nanoparticles with a wet impregnation method. As expected, the sensitive responses were enhanced significantly with the additional loading of Pt, which revealed that bimetallic loading could achieve better properties with a smaller loaded amount than single metal. According to the power-law response to oxygen and H 2 -TPR results, the sensitization mechanism of noble metals loaded WO 3 to acetone as the typical VOCs was investigated. The results showed that the sensing processes were dominated by oxygen adsorption behavior and there was no difference with the loading of Ru. Furthermore, the power-law coefficient n became smaller with Pt loading. It is proposed that oxygen adsorbates on the surface become more active due to Pt. We would like to propose further a perspective, i.e., polymetallic loading that utilizes the properties of different metals to achieve synergism.

A novel ultrafine Pt/Beta catalyst supported on carbon paper was prepared and applied to selective catalytic reduction of NO x by H 2 at a low temperature below 90 °C. Here, 0.8 wt.% Pt/Beta reached approximately 100 % NO conversion at 90 °C under oxygen-rich conditions (1000 ppm NO, 1 % H 2 , and 4 % O 2 ). The influence of the dispersion and particle size of Pt on the catalytic performance was investigated using Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a structure directing agent to regulate the Pt particles. The feeding amount of PVP significantly influenced the catalytic activity of the catalysts. When the feeding amount was less than 50 mg, the Pt particle size was smaller, and the dispersion was higher, providing a higher NO conversion. However, when the feeding amount exceeded 50 mg, the dispersion no longer increased, and the activity slightly decreased. N 2 physisorption (BET) confirmed that excessive PVP decreased the specific surface area, which suppressed the catalytic activity of Pt/Beta. Moreover, the NO conversion efficiency was dependent on the dispersion and particle size of Pt and was minimally affected by the surface area of the catalysts. The Pt/Beta catalyst system was deactivated, and an irreversible poisoning phenomenon for SO 2 was observed. Zr, Ce, and V were introduced into the catalyst system as metal auxiliaries . The Ce-modified Pt-Ce/Beta catalyst prepared in this study showed resistance to SO 2 .

Pt–WO 3 porous composite ceramics have been prepared from Pt and WO 3 nanoparticles through pressing and sintering. These ceramics exhibit extraordinary room-temperature sensing capabilities, including high sensitivities, fast response and recovery speeds, and good stability, for low concentrations of hydrogen (at and below 1000 ppm) in air; while for high concentrations of hydrogen (above 2000 ppm) in air, the recoveries in air are only partial in given amounts of time. We propose that for low concentrations of hydrogen, the response results from the reaction of hydrogen with chemisorbed oxygen on WO 3 ; while for high concentrations of hydrogen, hydrogen chemisorption on WO 3 will occur after all chemisorbed oxygen on WO 3 is reacted. The relatively high stability of chemisorbed hydrogen on WO 3 is responsible for the observed partial recoveries. Our results show that Pt–WO 3 composite ceramics are highly competitive for sensing low concentrations of hydrogen in air at room temperature among various metal oxide semiconductor bulk materials.

Sunlight-driven photocatalytic overall water splitting (OWS) is a promising approach for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, its realization with a single photocatalyst by one-step excitation has been extremely limited due to the rapid recombination of photogenerated charges, slow surface redox kinetics, and undesired reverse reactions. Herein, we sought to enhance the OWS performance of SrTiO3 (STO) by exploring the synergistic effects of different kinds of metal/oxide dual cocatalysts. The results show that the Pt/CrOx-STO system had a superior activity, which achieved stoichiometric water splitting with H2/O2 evolution of 1814.17/1020.47 μmol g–1 h–1 under simulated sunlight, without using any sacrificial reagents. The enhanced efficiency can be attributed to the improved interfacial transport of photogenerated charges and the boosted surface kinetics. Importantly, the CrOx layer served as a selective membrane that prevented the O2 diffusion and facilitated H+ transport, while partially covering the highly active site of Pt nanoparticles, thus significantly inhibiting the reverse recombination reaction of H2 and O2. In particular, this dual catalyst system emphasized a low dependence on the properties of the substrate material and is therefore widely applicable and economical. This work demonstrated the potential of the Pt/CrOx dual cocatalyst modification strategy for optimizing photocatalytic OWS, providing a pathway toward selective and sustainable conversion of H2O to H2 and O2.

Electrocatalyst materials play a crucial role in determining the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), directly influencing the overall effectiveness of energy conversion technologies. Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures hold substantial promise as bifunctional catalysts, owing to their synergistic electronic characteristics and plentiful active sites. However, their catalytic efficacy is impeded by the relatively elevated chemisorption energy of hydrogen-containing intermediates, which constrains their functionality in different pH environments. In order to mitigate this limitation, trace amounts of Pt are introduced into the heterostructure, intending to enhance electronic transport and refining chemisorption energies, thereby facilitating significant enhancements in both HER and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities over a wide pH range. It is revealed that the Pt-modified catalyst achieves exceptional HER performance, requiring merely 64 mV and 83 mV overpotentials to attain a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. Furthermore, theoretical simulations corroborate that Pt modification optimizes local electronic configurations and augments electronic transfer, contributing to its superior catalytic performance. This investigation underscores the pivotal role of Pt modification in propelling the practical application of Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures as highly efficient and pH-universal bifunctional catalysts.

Designing cost-effective and highly stable heterostructures with synergistic active sites could simultaneously catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for (sea) water splitting. However, there are still challenges in maintaining the catalytic performance of individual materials and in constructing intimate interfaces. Herein, a novel corrosion engineering method is provided to prepare self-standing Fe2O3-Pt/NF nanoflowers where ultra-small amounts of Pt combined with Fe2O3 are in situ grown on nickel foam (NF) in the corrosion system of “H2PtCl6–NaCl–FeCl3”. The synthesized Fe2O3-Pt/NF shows the presence of a Pt–O bond, which can regulate the electronic structure of the active sites and optimize the binding energy of the reaction intermediates, leading to an improvement in catalytic performance. Compared with Pt/NF and FeOOH/NF, the Fe2O3-Pt/NF heterostructure exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activities with overpotentials reaching 94 mV and 265 mV for the HER and OER, respectively, at a high current density of 100 mA cm−2 in alkaline solution. Furthermore, the self-assembled electrolytic cell employing Fe2O3-Pt/NF as the bifunctional electrode only requires potentials of 1.60 V and 1.61 V to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in overall water and seawater splitting, respectively. This material remained stable for 10 hours without obvious attenuation, indicating its good environmental adaptability and stability. Specifically, the enhanced catalytic activity and stability can be ascribed to the abundant active sites of nanoflowers, fast electron transfer rate of intimate interfaces, and strong electronic interaction between Pt atoms and Fe2O3. This work provides a new insight into the construction of highly efficient co-catalysts with intimate interfaces based on corrosion engineering methods.
