Morphological design to expose more active sites and surface defect engineering to regulate the electronic structure are the two main methods to improve material properties. It is also well documented that metal sites in high valence states are beneficial to the OER process. Herein, we combine the advantages of the above three methods to fabricate extraordinary catalysts just by facile adjusting the Fe content. The catalysts with different Fe contents exhibit excellent activity and outstanding stability beyond the yardstick material (RuO 2 ) in alkaline condition. The resultant FeCoNi (oxy)hydroxide nanosheets is one of the most active trimetal-based oxygen evolution catalysts to date. Specifically, the resultant Fe 1.25 (Co 2 Ni 1 ) 2.5 (oxy)hydroxide can deliver a minimum overpotential of 212 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 with a small Tafel slope of 52 mV dec −1 and a negligible activity attenuation after excess 72 h long-term test at 100 mA cm −2 . Most importantly, when use Fe 1.25 (Co 2 Ni 1 ) 2.5 (oxy)hydroxide as a water splitting anode, an electrolyzer delivers a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a very low cell voltage of 1.51 V. This excellent performance is attributed to the large number of active sites exposed by the nanosheets, the active center of the catalyst to the higher valence state and the large number of oxygen defects produced. This work can provide more valuable insights to promote the development of the highly efficient oxygen evolution for applications.

Transition metal selenides embedded into a nitrogen, sulfur co-doped carbon materials (TMS@NSC) are promising electrocatalysts to effectively address the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the OER catalytic activity of single metal TMS@NSC is still limited by insufficient active sites. Hence, FeSe 2 and CoSe 2 nanoparticles self-generated and confined in N, S-doped porous carbon (FeSe 2 /CoSe 2 @NSC) catalyst has been synthesized by in-situ polymerization and the subsequent low temperature selenization strategy, aiming to increase the active sites of TMS@NSC. The hybridized FeSe 2 /CoSe 2 @NSC catalyst has excellent OER catalytic activity and good durability in alkaline media, which only requiring an overpotential as low as 278 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming most recently reported selenide catalysts and commercial RuO 2 catalysts. The high catalytic activity of FeSe 2 /CoSe 2 @NSC catalyst is attributed to the rapid electron transfer between FeSe 2 and CoSe 2 in the unique N, S-doped graphene nanosheets, which effectively inhibits the aggregation of nanoparticles, fully exposes the active sites and provides pathway for oxygen release during the OER process. Moreover, the overall water splitting device assembled with FeSe 2 /CoSe 2 @NSC catalyst showed low overpotential of 1.57 V. This study provides a feasible strategy for the design of high active and stable TMS@NSC catalysts for OER and other energy conversion applications.

Reasonable construction of non-noble metal-based catalysts as a substitute to precious metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting has been a challenge. Herein, ultrasmall core-shell-structured FeNi encapsulated within tungsten carbide (WC) stabilized in a thin N-doped graphitized carbon layer (NCL) was proposed through a unique one-step encapsulation strategy combined with a high temperature carbonization procedure and tested as an OER catalyst. Physicochemical characterizations of the newly prepared material demonstrate that metal nanoparticles are embedded in the carbon layers of FeNi@WC-NCL, which possess a highly porous structure and large specific surface area. By modulating the electronic effects of both the FeNi alloy and WC, the optimal NiFe@WC-NCL catalyst presents excellent performance with an onset potential of 1.38 V (vs. RHE) and an overpotential of only 279 mV (vs. RHE) at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 towards OER. Moreover, NiFe@WC-NCL exhibits excellent durability after 2000 cycles with a slight overpotential decrease of only 11 mV. Both the property and stability of the proposed catalyst surpass the benchmark RuO 2 catalyst, providing great potential as an alternative to precious metal catalysts for the OER.

Zn–N–C catalysts have garnered attention as potential electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, their intrinsic limitations, including poor activity and a low density of active sites, continue to hinder their electrocatalytic performance. In this study, we have devised a dual-template strategy for the synthesis of Zn, N, S co-doped nanoporous carbon-based catalysts (Zn–N/S–C(S, Z)) with a substantial specific surface area and a graded pore structure. The introduction of S enhances electron localization around the Zn–Nx active centers, facilitating interactions with oxygen-containing substances. The resulting Zn–N/S–C(S, Z) sample exhibits outstanding performance in an alkaline solution, demonstrating a half-wave potential of 0.89 V. This value surpasses that of commercial Pt/C by 40 mV. Furthermore, when combined with RuO2 (Zn–N/S–C(S, Z) + RuO2), the catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance in a Zn–air battery, offering an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.47 V and a peak power density of 290.8 mW cm−2. This study paves the way for the development of highly dispersed and highly active Zn-metal site catalysts, potentially replacing traditional Pt-based catalysts in various electrochemical devices.

In the context of overall water splitting, traditional catalysts like Pt/C and IrO2 are inadequate due to high costs and limited functionality. In response to this challenge, our research introduces a versatile catalytic material, synthesized via an innovative “wet–dry” microwave radiation technique, designed for effective overall water splitting under both acidic and alkaline conditions. In just 110 seconds, we synthesize aluminum-modified ultrathin Rux/RuO2 heterostructures (A-RRO@G), with a diameter of approximately 2.3 nm and a height of less than 1 nm, which significantly reduces cost and preparation time. Thanks to the high atomic utilization and the electronic structure modulation facilitated by the ultrathin Rux/RuO2 heterostructure with the Al dopants, electronic configurations and kinetic reaction pathways are significantly optimized. This results in superior water-splitting performance in both acidic and alkaline environments. Notably, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mass activities surpass those of 20 wt% Pt/C by 16.60 and 5.19 times under alkaline and acidic conditions, respectively, and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mass activities exceed that of commercial IrO2 by two orders of magnitude. This research provides insights for developing advanced catalysts tailored for efficient water splitting, marking a significant scientific and practical enhancement in clean energy conversion and storage.

For developing rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs), designing reasonably high-activity and robust endurance electrocatalysts toward oxygen evolution/reduction reactions (OER/ORR) is of paramount importance. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been considered as ideal candidates for driving oxygen electrocatalysis in ZABs owing to their high electrocatalytic activity and atom utilization. However, oxidation and aggregation hinder their practical application. To address this issue, Co single atom-decorated RuO2 nanoparticles loaded on nitrogen-doped ultrathin porous carbon nanosheets (designated as CoSA-RuO2-NUCN) were synthesized. We provide an effective method for stabilizing cobalt atom with ruthenium dioxide; the strong interfacial interaction between CoSA-RuO2 makes the Co–O–Ru interface extremely stable in the electrocatalytic oxidation reaction. Meanwhile, CoSA-RuO2 combines with ultrathin carbon nanosheets to enhance the conductivity. Consequently, the obtained CoSA-RuO2-NUCN exhibits outstanding performance toward ORR (half-wave potential of 0.90 V) and OER (280 mV at 10 mA cm−2), respectively. Moreover, the rechargeable ZAB with CoSA-RuO2-NUCN shows high open-circuit voltage (1.55 V), ultrahigh specific capacity (766.14 mA h g−1), and superb long-term cycling stability (800 h), outperforming the commercial Pt/C + RuO2. This study not only presents a method to obtain a high-activity and strong stability electrocatalyst but also encourages to explore advanced materials to promote the development of ZABs.

Treating endocrine-disrupting bisphenols by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in hypersaline polycarbonate wastewater (PCW) remains challenging due to the high-salinity conditions. Here, we present an acetylperoxyl radical (CH 3 C(O)OO • )-mediated oxidation strategy for selective bisphenol removal in hypersaline environments. Using Ru(III)/peracetic acid (PAA) as a model platform, effective removal of four priority bisphenols was achieved with substituent-dependent degradation kinetics (BPAF > BPA > BPF > BPS, k obs = 0.037–0.135 min −1 ). Employing BPAF as a model contaminant, we elucidated a dual removal mechanism that BPAF was completely removed with 16.7 % was mineralized and 15.3 % was transformed into solid-state polymers with polymerization degrees from 2 to 11. The system maintained robust performance under extreme salinity (∼14,000 mg L −1 Cl − ) with < 8.0 % efficiency loss under ∼12000 mg L −1 HCO 3 − or 250 mg L −1 humic acid. To enable practical implementation, we engineered a heterogeneous RuO 2 -membrane reactor that sustained ∼80 % BPAF removal over 12 h continuous operation (hydraulic retention time = 20 min), processing 3.6 L of simulated PCW (50 mg L −1 BPAF) with biodegradability (BOD 5 /COD) increased from 0.31 to 0.52. This work pioneers CH 3 C(O)OO • -mediated oxidation for selectively remove bisphenols in hypersaline PCW with exceptional anti-interference capacity.

Modulating the hetero-structures with abundant interfaces in catalyst is a feasible but challenging strategy to improve the catalytic performance. In this work, a highly efficient catalyst ( R -CoMoO x /Ni (Co)) was prepared with plentiful interfacial structures to accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which contained both reduced CoO and MoO 2 as a R -CoMoO x substrate and metallic Ni (Co) particles as the catalytic center. The combination of CoO and MoO 2 with a Co-O-Mo local structure in R -CoMoO x led to an electron-enriched Co center to catch the dissociated H + , while the abundant interfacial interaction between R -CoMoO x and Ni (Co) could accelerate the charge transfer and then facilitate the production of H 2 through a fast Volmer-Tafel pathway. As a result, the integrated R -CoMoO x /Ni (Co) catalyst could drive alkaline HER with ultra-low overpotentials of 16 mV for 10 mA cm −2 (25 °C) and 186 mV for 1000 mA cm −2 (60 °C), respectively, with a good stability over 100 h. Moreover, by coupling with RuO 2 electrode in an anion exchange membrane system, it could achieve 1000 mA cm −2 at 1.78 V for overall water splitting with a high energy conversion efficiency of 70.4 %. The H 2 production cost at 1000 mA cm −2 was merely $ 0.952 per gasoline gallon equivalent, much less than the target cost of the US Department of Energy.

Efficient metal-free catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are challenged for enhancing the efficiency of water electrolysis. Here, an extremely simple one-step calcination route is put forward to synthesize free-standing N-doped C electrocatalyst for the OER. The incorporation of N into carbon cloth (CC) can tune the electronic structure around the C sites for enhancing the reaction active sites and electrical conductivity, and optimizing adsorption energies for intermediates. As expected, the as-prepared CC-9NH 3 -3h electrode demonstrates remarkable OER performance in alkaline medium, affording an extremely low overpotential of 298 mV (@10 mA cm −2 ) and Tafel slope of 62 mV dec −1 , which is comparable to that of a commercial RuO 2 and other promising metal-based OER catalysts. Our findings provide opportunities to explore CC as a new class of self-supporting OER electrocatalyst, and to improve its performance by modulating their intrinsic structure.

Structural and interface engineering enable the optimization of electrocatalysts in terms of both activity and durability. Herein, the three-dimensional (3D) architecture graphdiyne nanowall (GDY) serving as scaffolds anchor metal cations to form the NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanodots/graphdiyne (NiFe ND/GDY) heterojunction electrocatalysts for water oxidation in alkaline solution. After tuning the loading amount of NiFe-LDH carefully, the NiFe ND displays ultrasmall nanometer size of 2.7 nm and intimate interfacial coupling with GDY. Owing to the optimized 0D/3D structure, strong interfacial forces and the unique properties of GDY, the resulting NiFe ND/GDY requires an overpotential of only 252 mV to deliver current density of 10 mA cm −2 and shows favorable kinetics with a small Tafel slope of 39.70 mV dec −1 . Notably, the mass activity of NiFe ND/GDY heterojunction is 70 times higher than that of the commercial RuO 2 (631 A g −1 vs. 9 A g −1 to RuO 2 , at η = 300 mV), and it exhibits a superior long-term stability (only 10% degradation during continuous electrolysis of 100 h). This work indicates that GDY can serve as a promising substrate to anchor the ultrafine nanoparticle catalysts for water oxidation or beyond.

The deployment of ruthenium-based catalysts in low-loading anodes of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers is hindered by their insufficient stability and limited catalyst utilization. This work presents a novel core–shell nanowire electrocatalyst (PRO@Pt) consisting of a Pt nanowire core coated with a Pt-doped RuO2 active shell. Characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the incorporation of Pt dopants and the resulting lattice expansion elevate the electron density on Ru sites, weaken Ru–O covalency, and optimize intermediate adsorption, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability of RuO2 for oxygen evolution reaction. In 0.5 M H2SO4, PRO@Pt-2/18 exhibits a low overpotential of 173 mV at 10 mA cm–2. Moreover, the catalyst network constructed by the intertwined PRO@Pt nanowire bundles avoids electrical isolation and ensures efficient electron transport throughout the electrode, even at a low loading. The single cell with the low-loading reticular catalyst layer (0.11 mg cm–2) conveys an extremely low voltage of 1.72 V at 3 A cm–2 and an average degradation rate of only 5 μV h–1 in the latter stage of 1450 h of operation. This study provides a new strategy for developing efficient and durable low-loading anodes for industrial water electrolysis.

Fabricated a novel CNT catalyst with Ru,Ni nanoparticles encapsulated inside and CeO 2 /RuO 2 heterojunctions outside. • Achieved lower OER/HER overpotentials of 163.9/105.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte. • Interfacial electron transfer of CeO 2 /RuO 2 heterojunction effectively inhibits Ru overoxidation and dissolution. • Exhibits outstanding bifunctional electrocatalytic performance in both acidic and alkaline water splitting. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis links renewable energy surplus utilization to hydrogen storage—a critical connection enabled by its rapid adaptation to renewable power output swings. Nevertheless, developing bifunctional electrocatalysts incorporating high activity, economic feasibility, and long-term stability remains insufficient for fluctuation-adapted acidic electrolyzers. Herein, we designed and synthesized a bifunctional electrocatalyst (denoted as CeO 2 /RuO 2 /Ru,Ni@CNT), in which Ru and Ni nanoparticles are encapsulated within carbon nanotubes, while CeO 2 /RuO 2 heterojunctions are distributed on the exterior surface. The catalyst was prepared via a combination of calcination, hydrothermal, and annealing processes. Experimental results show the catalyst has excellent bifunctional activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , with overpotentials as low as 163.9 mV (OER) and 105 mV (HER) at 10 mA cm −2 and good stability. The superior performance stems from the synergistic interactions of multiple factors, including the high dispersion and electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes, the electronic modulation imparted by internal Ru and Ni nanoparticles, and the interfacial electron transfer at the CeO 2 /RuO 2 heterojunctions. This study establishes a new design direction for high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts, relying on encapsulation-heterojunction structures, for renewable-coupled acidic PEM electrolysis.
