Defect-Engineered MOF-801/Sodium Alginate Aerogel Beads for Boosting Adsorption of Pb(II)

Mengshuo Du,Yingying Wang,Youyu Cao,Wenzhi Tang,Zhonghong Li

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive adsorbents for heavy metal capture due to their superior stability, easy modification, and adjustable pore size. However, their inherent microporous structure poses challenges in achieving a higher adsorption capacity. Defect engineering is considered a simple method to create hierarchical MOFs with larger pores. Here, we employed l-aspartic acid as a mixed linker to bind Zr4+ clusters in competition with fumaric acid of MOF-801 to create defects, and the pore size was increased from 4.66 to 15.65 nm. Mercaptosuccinic acid was subsequently used as a postexchange ligand to graft the resultant MOF-801 by acid-ammonia condensation to further expand the pore size to 22.73 nm. Notably, the −NH2, −COOH, and −SH groups contributed by these two ligands increased the adsorption sites for Pb(II). The obtained defective MOF-801 with larger pores was thereafter loaded onto sodium alginate to form aerogel beads as adsorbents, and an adsorption capacity of 375.48 mg/g for Pb(II) was achieved, which is ∼51 times that of pristine MOF-801. The aerogel beads also exhibited outstanding reusability with a removal efficiency of ∼90.23% after 5 cycles of use. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) included ion-exchange interaction, as well as chelation interactions of Pb–O, Pb–NH2, and Pb–S. The versatile combination of defect engineering and composite beads provides novel inspirations for MOF modification for boosting heavy metal adsorption.

A sodium alginate - silk fibroin biosponge loaded with thrombin: Effective hemostasis and wound healing

Yansen Li,Ming Li,Chang Li,Jing Chang,Yuwen Hui,Chuanlin Wang,Wei Guo,Zhulin Li

In trauma first aid, rapid hemostasis is a priority, extricating patients from hemorrhagic shock and infection risks. This paper explores novel hemostatic materials, using ion-crosslinking and freeze-drying techniques. Iterative experiments determined optimal conditions for the temperature-variable mixing-freeze-drying chemical reaction of sodium alginate (SA)/silk fibroin (SF). We used SA, SA/SF, SA/SF-TB and commercial hemostatic sponge control samples to perform hemostasis experiments on rat liver injury and femoral artery injury models, and to perform wound healing experiments on rat back full-layer skin. The results showed that the hemostatic time and blood loss of SA/SF-TB group rats (liver hemorrhage model: 397.17 ± 34.80 mg, 77.83 ± 7.41 s; Femoral artery bleeding model: 940.33 ± 41.93 mg, 96.83 ± 4.07 s) was significantly better than other experimental groups, and similar to the commercial group. The wound healing experiment showed that the new granulation tissue thickness of SA/SF-TB group was thicker (380.39 ± 28.56 μm) at day 14. In addition, the material properties and biocompatibility of sponges were characterized by cell experiments and in vivo embedding experiments. All the results showed that the SA/SF-TB hemostatic sponge prepared in this study could not only seal the wound quickly and stop bleeding, but also promote the growth of epidermal cells and fibroblasts and accelerate wound healing. This new material solves the shortcomings of traditional materials such as low stability, limited shelf life, high unit price, and has good biocompatibility, easy preparation, rapid hemostasis and other excellent properties. Therefore, this innovative hemostatic material has great prospects and potential in clinical applications.

Simultaneously enhancing strength and toughness of coir fiber through NaOH and sodium alginate treatment

Tiancheng Xiong,Haohao Wang,Haoyang Sun,Jing Zhao,Maoning Li,Qingyuan Du,Dandan Li,Yu Nan,Zhi Zhang,Dazhi Sun

Coir fibers are commonly subjected to alkali treatment to eliminate impurities and tune their mechanical properties. However, this process can damage the fibers’ microstructures, posing a challenge in significantly enhancing both strength and toughness simultaneously. Herein, we successfully enhanced both strength and toughness of coir fibers through a combined treatment with NaOH and sodium alginate aqueous solution. Coir fibers treated with 5 wt% NaOH solution, followed by 0.5 wt% sodium alginate solution, exhibit a tensile modulus of 2475.0 MPa, a tensile strength of 126.4 MPa, and a toughness of 30.7 MJ/m³, representing improvements of 57.1 %, 72.7 %, and 116.2 %, respectively, compared to the raw fibers. Mechanistic studies revealed that NaOH treatment effectively removes pectin, hemicellulose and lignin from coir fibers but introduces numerous defects. Sodium alginate can repair these defects by forming hydrogen bonds with the rich oxygen-containing group of coir fibers. The combined treatment also increases the crystallinity of coir fibers from 30.3 % for the raw fibers to 44.1 % by removing a large number of amorphous substances. Additionally, the combined treatment reduces the microfibril angle from ∼63.6° to ∼46.6° by elongating the helix structure and filling the gaps between helical fibers. Our cost-effective strategy not only promotes the applications of coir fibers but also provides guidance for the modification of other natural plant fibers.

Piezoelectric Iridium-Doped Bismuth Ferrite/Sodium Alginate Hydrogel for Antibiosis and Stimulating Osteoblastic Differentiation

Lei Sun,Weijie Yang,Shangyu Xie,Xiaowen Xi,Anqi Song,Guolin Li,Jie Wei,Jun Zhao

The creation of a piezoelectric nanozyme with a piezoelectric effect coupled with nanozyme activity to eradicate bacteria and facilitate osteoblast response is a novel strategy for the repair of infected bone defects. Herein, iridium-doped bismuth ferrite nanoparticles (IBFO) with improved piezoelectricity and multiple enzyme-like activities were prepared via the sol–gel method. Triggered by ultrasound (US), the piezoelectric effect of IBFO boosted the separation of electron/hole pairs and accelerated electron transfer that enhanced sonodynamic efficiency and enzyme-like activities. Moreover, a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive sodium alginate-based piezoelectric hydrogel containing IBFO nanoparticles was prepared (IBFO-SAPS). In simulating a bacterial infection microenvironment (pH = 5.5) triggered by US (power > 0.5 W/cm2), IBFO-SAPS demonstrated remarkable antibacterial efficacy via the combination of piezoelectrically enhanced sonodynamic efficiency and peroxide (POD)-like activity that generated a large amount of ROS for collaborative eradication of bacteria. In simulating a physiological microenvironment (pH 7.4), under US (≤0.5 W/cm2) the piezoelectric effect of IBFO-SAPS improved the catalase (CAT)-like activity for scavenging intracellular ROS and generating oxygen, which provided a favorable microenvironment for cell growth due to the alleviation of oxidative stress and hypoxia. Moreover, the electrical stimulation generated by the piezoelectric effect of IBFO-SAPS boosted osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. The developed hydrogel significantly rooted out bacteria and facilitated osteoblast response through the piezoelectric effect, enhancing sonodynamic efficiency and nanozyme activity. This study provided a new strategy to design anti-infective biomaterials for the treatment of infected bone defects.

Sodium alginate based piezoelectric hydrogel for promoting healing of infected wounds at movable parts

Rui Chen,Tianshu Zou,Biao Zhang,Zhiqi Yang,Yuhang Wang,Pengcheng Yu,Haotian Cheng,Jian Zhao,Xin Liu,Xiaodong Yang,Lili Wang,Yuanqiang Li,Yan Cheng

The frequent movement is an obstacle to the healing of wounds at movable parts. It would be highly beneficial if this characteristic could be utilized to accelerate wound healing process. Herein, we developed a sodium niobate (NNO) hydrogel (NNO-Gel) for promoting healing process of wounds at movable parts based on its photodynamic and piezoelectric properties. NNO-Gel is formed through incorporating NNO into polyvinyl alcohol‑sodium alginate hydrogel using calcium chloride as a cross-linking agent. NNO-Gel could not only produce reactive oxygen species for bacteria inactivation with simulated sunlight irradiation, but also generate electric field for promoting cell migration and proliferation through the frequent movement of necks. With simulated sunlight irradiation, NNO-Gel could kill 95.6 % ± 1.4 % of bacteria, 9.3 % higher than NNO nanomaterials. The cell proliferation rate reaches 148.41 ± 6.37 % by NNO nanomaterials with ultrasound irradiation through activating and phosphorylating phosphoinositide 3-kinase and protein kinase B. For infected neck wounds, NNO NMs and NNO-Gel show 23.6 ± 5.1 % and 25.3 ± 6.1 % higher healing rate than PBS treated ones. The development of NNO-Gel provides an opportunity for transforming the negative frequent movement which prevents wound healing into motive power for promoting healing of wound at movable parts, as well as the possibility of clinic applications for piezoelectric nanomaterials.

Gang Wu,Wei Su,Lini Huo,Qing Guo,Jianhua Wei,Haiyi Zhong,Peiyuan Li

Developing bifunctional innovative food packaging for maintaining and monitoring food freshness is crucial for food safety. Here, we prepared tannic acid cinnamaldehyde nanoemulsions through self-assembly and ionic cross-linking between the natural emulsifiers tannic acid and cinnamaldehyde, and were incorporated into chitosan as a protective outer layer. Sodium alginate anchored with alizarin was employed as the sensing inner layer. A pH-sensitive bilayer film integrating real-time monitoring and maintenance of food fresh food freshness was designed using layer-by-layer assembly (LBL) technology. The prepared bilayer film exhibited 100 % UV protection, >99 % antimicrobial effect, and 94.86 % and 97.91 % clearance rates for DPPH and ABTS free radicals, respectively. In addition, the bilayer film exhibited high biosafety and sensitive, reversible, and rapid response to pH/NH 3 . Shrimp preservation experiments showed that the smart bilayer film could effectively slow down the growth of microorganisms on the surface of shrimp, extend the freshness period of shrimp, and could monitor the freshness of shrimp in real-time through color changes. In conclusion, the prepared SL-CCT bilayer film has excellent potential for food preservation and freshness monitoring, providing a new perspective for design and development of multifunctional smart food packaging films.

Sodium-alginate-based indicator film containing a hydrophobic nanosilica layer for monitoring fish freshness

Shuo Shi,Xiaodan Wu,Ying Wang,Wenxin Li,Hao Zhang,Xinjiang Lou,Xiufang Xia,Weiwei Liang

In this study, hydrophobic sodium alginate/anthocyanin/cellulose nanocrystal indicator films were fabricated by incorporating nanosilica (NS) as a waterproofing layer. The concentrations and formation methods (spraying (S), coating (C), and impregnation (I)) of the NS layer (denoted as NSS, NSC, NSI, respectively) were optimized. The results indicated that the optimum concentration of the NS layer was 5 % at a water contact angle (WCA) 110.5°. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectra showed the presence of Si O Si and Si CH 3 groups in the NSS, NSC, and NSI films, and X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that original structures of these films were disordered. Moreover, the surface morphology, mechanical properties, and light transmission were affected by the NS layer, and the optimal layer was found to be NSI. After 10 days of storage at 100 % humidity, the NSI film exhibited low water vapor adsorption (37.22 g) and permeability (0.1484 g/m·s·Pa·10 −11 ) and a high WCA (110.2°). In addition, the NSI film exhibited a visible color shift with an increasing pH of the buffer solution. A monitoring test of fish freshness showed that the NSI film displayed a distinctive color change corresponding to fish spoilage during 14 days of storage. This indicates that NSI has high potential in indicator film applications.

Urease catalyzed high-density sodium alginate microspheres enable high oral bioavailability of macromolecular drugs

Yicheng Jiang,Li Mi,Xiang Xu,Adric Ru Khiing Hii,Zhenghong Wu,Xiaole Qi

Destruction of insulin caused by the gastric microenvironment and rapid deactivation pose inevitable barriers to oral macromolecular absorption, especially for most peptide and protein drugs. In this study, we developed high-density sodium alginate microspheres composed of magnesium oxide and urease to address these challenges. These microspheres aim to anchor the gastric mucus layer and induce microenvironmental liquefaction, thereby enhancing gastric retention and the protection of insulin. The sedimentation test confirmed the capability of the Ins/Ur/MgO@SA microsphere to rapidly traverse the gastric juice under the influence of gravity. Additionally, the urease immobilized on the Ins/Ur/MgO@SA microspheres catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea in the gastric mucus and promotes the liquefaction of mucus, which is beneficial for microsphere retention. The inclusion of MgO particles and urease, acting as pHM modifiers, helps in adjusting the local pH to avoid gastric acid-induced damage. Subsequently, an in vivo pharmacokinetic experiment verified that the relative bioavailability of the p.o. Ins/Ur/MgO@SA treated group was 15-fold higher than that of the p.o.insulin treated group. Meanwhile, satisfactory blood glucose level (BGL) reduction was observed in diabetic animals. In conclusion, Ins/Ur/MgO@SA microspheres demonstrate high biocompatibility as insulin carriers with prolonged drug release time and increased gastric retention properties, showing a far-reaching strategy for oral macromolecular drug delivery.

Tough, self-healing, and injectable dynamic nanocomposite hydrogel based on gelatin and sodium alginate

Li Ting Gao,Yong Mei Chen,Yasir Aziz,Wei Wei,Xin Yi Zhao,Yuan He,Jianhui Li,Haopeng Li,Hideyuki Miyatake,Yoshihiro Ito

Biomacromolecules based injectable and self-healing hydrogels possessing high mechanical properties have widespread potential in biomedical field. However, dynamic features are usually inversely proportional to toughness. It is challenging to simultaneously endow these properties to the hydrogels. Here, we fabricated an injectable nanocomposite hydrogel (CS-NPs@OSA-l-Gtn) combined with excellent autonomous self-healing performance and high mechanical strength by doping chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) into dynamic polymer networks of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and gelatin (Gtn) in the presence of borax. The synergistic effect of the multiple reversible interactions combining dynamic covalent bonds (i.e., imine bond and borate ester bond) and noncovalent interactions (i.e., electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bond) provided effect energy dissipation to endure high fatigue resistance and cyclic loading. The hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties like maximum 2.43 MPa compressive strength, 493.91 % fracture strain, and 89.54 kJ/m 3 toughness. Moreover, the injected hydrogel could withstand 150 successive compressive cycles after self-healing. Besides, the bovine serum albumin embedded in CS-NPs could be sustained release from the nanocomposite hydrogel for 12 days. This study proposes a novel strategy to synthesize an injectable and self-healing hydrogel combined with excellent mechanical properties for designing high-strength natural carriers for sustained protein delivery.

Synthesis of sodium alginate grafted methyl methacrylate and its mechanism of coal-dust inhibition

Zhilin Xi,Jialu Ren,Yujie Chu,Weicheng Ren

To control coal dust, a novel composite dust suppressant named SA-g-PMMA/APG1214 was created by mixing SA-g-PMMA (sodium alginate grafted methyl methacrylate) with the surfactant APG1214. SA-g-PMMA was synthesized by using 2 g sodium alginate (SA) and 4 g methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 0.12 g ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator in a water bath at 70 °C for 2 h. Quantum chemistry calculations, experiments, and molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the synthesis mechanism and dust-suppression properties. Results indicated that the reactive sites of SA and MMA were located at the O14-H19 and C1 =C2 bonds, respectively. H19 on the hydroxyl group of the SA molecular structure was seized by SO 4 –. produced by the decomposition of ammonium persulfate to generate SA-O . reactive radicals. SA-O . reacted with the C1 =C2 bond in MMA to form the product SA-g-PMMA. A composite dust suppressant with excellent flowability and wettability was obtained by adding 1.3 g/L of APG1214 to SA-g-PMMA. Compared with the water–lignite system, the thickness of the absorbing layer at the lignite /water interface of the dust suppressant–lignite system increased from 14.60 Å to 16.68 Å, and the number of hydrogen bonds rose from 3178 to 3194.

Optimization of carbon capture and storage technology using sodium alginate through response surface methodology

Muhammad Arqam Khan,Shaine Mohammadali Lalji,Moiz Ali Khan Sial,Areeba Batool,Mohsin Ayubi,Syed Imran Ali,Muhammad Mustafa,Mei-Chun Li

The increasing demand for sustainable carbon capture technologies necessitates the exploration of novel solvents for CO 2 absorption. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a critical technology for controlling greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change. This study investigated the efficiency of sodium alginate (Na-Alg) as a bio-based solvent in carbon capture technology using the simulation software, Aspen Plus. The model was developed to simulate the absorption of CO 2 in a tray column, and the performance of sodium alginate solution was analyzed using various key parameters, including temperature, pressure, and solvent flow rate, to maximize the carbon capture efficiency. The simulation was then validated with the help of existing literature and experimental data and was found to be in good correlation. The carbon capture efficiency of CO 2 was observed at 97 % using sodium alginate solution. The relations between process parameters and their influence on CO 2 capture were evaluated by applying response surface methodology, identifying optimal conditions at 10–20 °C, 10 bar pressure, and a solvent flow rate of 20–25 kmol/h. These findings highlight the potential of sodium alginate as an effective, eco-friendly solvent for CCS, offering both environmental and operational advantages. The study also demonstrates the utility of simulation and optimization techniques in enhancing CCS performance.

Comparison of Flocculation Methods for Sodium Alginate and Characterization of Its Structure and Properties

Yuxin Shi,Mingna Dong,Xuhui Lei,Zhiying Xu,Jiyan Sun,Yingying Zhao,Yichao Ma,Hui Zhou,Shu Liu,Yunhai He,Qiukuan Wang,Dandan Ren

This study investigated how different extraction parts of raw materials and different flocculation methods affect the extraction yield, structure, and properties of sodium alginate. The aim was to improve the quality of sodium alginate and provide theoretical guidance for upstream enterprises. In this study,Lessonia nigrescens(LN) was used as a raw material. The alkali treatment conditions were optimized. The optimal extraction conditions were determined to be a 2% sodium carbonate concentration, a duration of 4 h, a material-to-liquid ratio of 1:40, and a temperature of 60 °C, achieving an extraction yield of 43.03%. LN was categorized into blades, stipes, holdfasts, and whole seaweed for comparative analysis, and sodium alginate was flocculated using the acid, calcium, and ethanol methods. Structural and physicochemical analyses showed that the mannuronic acid/guluronic acid (M/G) ratios of the twelve sodium alginate samples ranged from 5.73 to 8.76. The LN part had a greater influence on the M/G ratio than the flocculation method. The relative molecular weight (2343–3074 kDa) and viscosity (170–331 mPa·s) exhibited consistent trends. For the same part, the effect of the flocculation method on the molecular weight followed the order ethanol > acid > calcium. The physicochemical properties of the extracted sodium alginate met the requirements specified in the physicochemical index standard GB 1886.243-2016 of China.
