Hollow-fiber membranes with tunable ultrafiltration performances by continuously depositing bacterial cellulose nanofibers

Xueliang Chen,Sen Xiong,Zhenfeng Lin,Chunling Liu,Yong Wang

The fabrication of high-performance hollow-fiber membranes (HFMs) can be effectively achieved through nanomaterial-based surface modification. However, achieving a uniform deposition of nanomaterials onto the curved surface remains a challenge. In this work, we have developed a pressure-driven, liquid-phase continuous deposition method to construct oxidized bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers onto HFMs in a layer-by-layer way. By controlling the oxidation time and deposition time, the Immunoglobulin G (IgG) rejection rate increases progressively from 50% to 90.1%, while the water permeance correspondingly decreases from approximately 1500 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 to 438.2 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 . The introduction of polyethylenimine (PEI) as a property regulator not only strengthens the crosslinking reaction but also further tunes the membrane properties. The oxidized BC membranes achieve a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 64% in the cyclic filtration tests, which is 4 times that of the pristine substrates. The water permeance of the oxidized BC membranes can still be maintained above 80% of its initial value in the long-term filtration test. Moreover, the consumption of oxidized BC is as low as 1.77 g m −2 for modifying HFMs, which further enhances the process sustainability of HFMs fabrication.

Unveiling the Role of Seawater Microdroplets in Accelerating Steel Corrosion

Yang Shen,Yuhao Hu,Jinyan Du,Junchang Guo,Zhenxu Shi,Jianing Song,Tao Zhong,Haoze Yuan,Zhengrong Lin,Dehui Wang,Xu Deng

In marine environments, splash-induced microdroplets are highly aggressive corrosion media, producing metal corrosion rates several times higher than in fully immersed regions. While macroscopic factors contributing to splash-zone corrosion are well established, the chemical reactivity of seawater microdroplets provides a previously underappreciated complementary mechanism that further enhances corrosion. Here, we demonstrate that the spontaneous generation of reactive radical species within microdroplets significantly accelerates metal oxidation. Notably, the corrosion rate of carbon steel in NaCl microdroplets is over an order of magnitude higher than in NaCl bulk water. Electron paramagnetic resonance and fluorometric assays reveal sustained generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in microdroplets, negligible in bulk. These species drive a two-stage acceleration: (i) surface ·OH initiates rapid Fe oxidation and (ii) H2O2 reacts with Fe2+ via a cyclic Fenton process, regenerating ·OH and forming an FeOOH layer. Time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry shows that high-salinity Cl– subsequently displaces FeOOH to form soluble FeOCl, exposing fresh metal and sustaining localized corrosion. This study highlights spontaneously generated reactive species in microdroplets as a key driver of splash zone corrosion, offering insights for radical-targeted protective coatings.

Sulfur vacancy mediated pyrite for scalable selective non-radical roxarsone degradation in wastewater without external chemical oxidants: Unveiling the fate of oxygen source and As

Shiqi Shu,Yuqi Zhu,Zheren Tang,Tao Wang,Liuxin Guo,Yongxin Liao,Zheng liu,Kunlun Yang,Miao Hengfeng

To realize potential efficient and scalable application of pyrite-based oxidation system for roxarsone (ROX) degradation in livestock wastewater, sulfur vacancies (SVs) was introduced in pyrite through a facile one-step mechanical ball-milling treatment. Comprehensive characterization demonstrated that the introduction of SVs reduced particle aggregation, enriched low-valence Fe and S species, and enhanced electron transfer capability. SVs preferred to be the adsorption sites and Fe as the electron donation sites during O 2 activation process. The specific contribution rate of different O 2 sources for ROX degradation was calculated via well-designed control experiments and the increased dissolved oxygen (DO) in water was proved to enhance the contribution of •OH, cooperating with 1 O 2 and beneficial for complete ROX mineralization. 97.13% of total arsenic derived from ROX can be effectively immobilized and surface coprecipitation played the major role. Speciation analysis revealed that ROX underwent initial oxidative degradation to inorganic arsenic, followed by rapid adsorption on the pyrite surface. FeS 2 -600 showed the high adaptability to complex environment and made effluent As of real livestock wastewater stably below the emission standard of China. This work further provides a universal strategy for potential scalable application of pyrite in water purification with zero-oxidant.

Preparation and application of cellulose-based molecularly imprinted polymers for the targeted separation of esculetin

Jialong Yuan,Xu Zhang,Congcong Zhao,Fengjiao Bai,Hao Yan,Jin Li,Zhenyu Zuo

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer(Esc-SMIPs) with specific selectivity for esculetin (Esc), was synthesized in this work. Dehydroabietic acid [2-(acryloyloxy) ethyl] ester (DAAEE) and 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) were utilized as bifunctional monomers, and porous cellulose microspheres derived from traditional Chinese medicine residue were employed as the carrier. The polymer was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, BET, TEM, and TGA. Experimental results demonstrated that the Esc – SMIPs prepared by these bifunctional monomers exhibit higher adsorption capacity (37.12 mg/g) and a superior imprinting factor (2.55) compared with the SMIPs derived from other monomers (PS, AA, 4 - VP, AM and DAAEE). In addition, Esc – SMIPs were applied as the solid – phase extraction filler for the selective identification and separation of Esc from Cortex fraxini extract. The concentration of Esc in the eluent (70% ethanol) was found to be significantly higher than that in the Cortex fraxini extract. The recovery rates of spiked samples for Esc were in the range of 98.06% − 101.93%, with relative standard deviation (RSD) values below 1.86%. When compared with macroporous adsorption resin D101 or Esc – SNIPs, excellent targeted enrichment and high separation efficiency for Esc are possessed by Esc – SMIPs.

Tunable oxygen vacancies in BiOBr nanosheets: Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride and perfluorooctanoic acid with distinct mechanisms

Qi Zeng,Chu-Ya Wang,Guangcan Zhu

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TTCH) are typical emerging pollutants with distinct molecular structures. TTCH contains C–H bonds in its molecule, but PFOA does not contain C-H bonds. The absence of C–H bonds makes PFOA insensitive to free radicals such as •OH. This structural difference poses a significant challenge for the efficient degradation of both pollutants. In this study, BiOBr nanosheets with adjustable concentrations of oxygen vacancies (OVs) were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal process. The photocatalytic efficiencies of MP2-BiOBr for PFOA and TTCH degradation were 3.93 and 3.89 times those of BiOBr. Electrochemical results indicated that the improvement in charge separation efficiency was the primary factor enhancing the photocatalytic performance of catalysts after the introduction of OVs. Additionally, the photocatalytic degradation of TTCH mainly involved active species •O 2 − , while PFOA was degraded through a direct oxidation process by photogenerated h + . Two possible decomposition pathways of PFOA over MP2-BiOBr are illustrated. Furthermore, The structure-performance relationship between OV-modified BiOBr and improved photocatalytic performance was established. This study presents a facile method for introducing OVs into BiOBr and provides some new insights into the mechanisms of pollutant degradation. It offers a promising strategy for the efficient treatment of complex wastewater containing diverse contaminants.

A cellulose-based hybrid material (cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS2) for the combined adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of levofloxacin from aqueous solutions

Xinxin Zhu,Liting Wang,Joe R. Zhao,Shoujuan Wang,Magdi E. Gibril,Fangong Kong

The rising contamination of water resources by levofloxacin (LEV) requires advanced remediation strategies that exceed the capabilities of the conventional methods. This study reports the rational design of a novel, multi-functional cellulose-phytic acid/Fe-MoS 2 (cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 ) hybrid composite for the highly efficient removal of LEV via synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis. Cellulose served as sustainable substrate and phytic acid acted as a natural cross-linker to enhance the integration and distribution of Fe-MoS 2 onto cellulose substrate. This designed architecture results in enhanced hydrophilicity, minimized MoS 2 aggregation, and a maximized density of active sites, as confirmed by comprehensive characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, BET, LC-MS, EPR). The prepared composite demonstrated exceptional, temperature-dependent LEV adsorption capacities of up to 210.97 mg/g (95%) within 40 min, with kinetics and isotherms best described by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, indicative of chemisorption. The adsorption mechanism driven by a combination of electrostatic attraction, π–π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and coordination complexation, resulting in effective removal across a broad pH range (3−10). The cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 exhibited photocatalytic effect, achieving efficient degradation of levofloxacin (LEV) (98.5%) within short time (15 mins) into small molecules (CO 2 , H 2 O, NH 3 , NO 3 , F, …etc.) as confirmed with LC-MS, driven primarily by reactive species (•O 2 − , •OH, h + ). In addition, it was demonstrated good recyclability, maintaining high performance over five consecutive cycles. These findings suggest that the designed cellulose-PA/Fe-MoS 2 composite could be used as a green and sustainable multifunctional material to simultaneously remove and degrade antibiotics from water environments.

Hierarchically Structured Porous Electro-Conductive Aerogels for All-Solid-State Flexible Planar Supercapacitors with Cyclic Stability

Huixiang Wang,Kaiquan Zhang,Ya Lu

Flexible supercapacitors have attracted significant attention as promising power sources for portable and wearable electronic devices. However, achieving simultaneous high power density, energy density and long-term cyclic stability in a simple device configuration remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report an all-solid-state flexible planar supercapacitor based on hierarchically structured cellulose nanofiber-carbon nanotube@manganese dioxide (CNF-CNT@MnO2) composite aerogels. The electrode architecture is rationally designed by first dispersing CNTs within a hydrophilic CNF scaffold to form a conductive three-dimensional network, followed by in situ oxidative polymerization of MnO2onto the CNF-CNT fibrous skeleton. The hydrophilic CNFs network ensures thorough electrolyte penetration, the interconnected CNTs facilitate rapid electron transport, and the uniformly coated MnO2layer provides substantial pseudocapacitance. The aerogel electrode with a low density of 14.6 mg cm−3and a high specific surface area of 214.4 m2g−1delivers a specific capacitance of 273.0 F g−1at 0.4 A g−1. The assembled planar supercapacitor, incorporating gel electrolyte and a flexible hydrogel substrate, achieves an impressive areal capacitance of 885.0 mF cm−2at 2 mA cm−2, energy density of 122.9 μWh cm−2and corresponding power density of 1000.0 μW cm−2. The device exhibits excellent electrochemical stability, retaining 83.3% capacitance after 2500 charge–discharge cycles, and outstanding mechanical flexibility, with 96.3% capacitance retention after 200 repeated bending cycles. Furthermore, multiple devices can be connected in series or parallel to proportionally increase output voltage or current, meeting the practical power requirements of electronic applications. This work offers a viable pathway toward high-performance, durable energy storage solutions for next-generation wearable electronics.

Nonstoichiometric Copper Bismuth Oxide Catalyst Boosting Surface-Bound Cu(III)-Peroxo Intermediate for Selective Oxidation via Dark Peroxydisulfate Activation

Wei Rao,Yifan Jiang,Qiong Liu,Junjun Zhang,Die He,Rong Chen

While high-valent copper intermediates are pivotal for efficient peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation, their generation and role in heterogeneous catalysis remain unclear. Herein, we demonstrate that a nonstoichiometric Cu 0.84 Bi 2.08 O 4 catalyst enables the dark activation of PDS via a novel pathway dominated by a surface-bound Cu(III)-peroxo intermediate ( ≡ Cu(III)-O−O−SO 3 ). A suite of spectroscopic and chemical probes revealed that this Cu(III)-peroxo species, along with superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ), acts as the primary oxidant, enabling the highly selective and rapid degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and other phenolic pollutants. Furthermore, H 2 O 2 generated from PDS hydrolysis synergistically participates in the reaction, accounting for the exceptionally high PDS utilization efficiency of the system. The system exhibits remarkable robustness, maintaining high activity over a wide pH range (4–11) and demonstrating strong resistance to interference from ions. This study elucidates a distinct Cu(III)-peroxo-mediated mechanism and offers a new strategy for designing highly selective catalysts for environmental remediation.

Neuro-inspired tactile system for robotic embodied perception

Yiyang Li,Ning Li,Herong Wang,Xiaojian Rao,Han Liu,Yue Jiang,Weiguan Zhang,Yue Xiao,Yong Tian,Lin Fan,Jindong Tian

Comprehension of real-world physical properties is a prerequisite for robotic embodied intelligence, crucially supported by advancing human-like tactile sensing. Though large-scale tactile sensing arrays are indispensable for improving resolution and accuracy, they are hindered by insurmountable scalability barriers—signal crosstalk and the overwhelming redundancy of data acquisition systems. In contrast, biological tactile perception systems can simultaneously and efficiently transmit and process stimuli from multiple receptors with distinct functions. To bridge this gap, we report a neuro-inspired tactile system integrating multiparametric sensing, neuromorphic encoding, and a cognitive framework to construct a complete sensation–perception–decision pathway. Specifically, we engineer a high-resilience aerogel/sponge composite structure featuring high sensitivity (7.54 kPa −1 ) and exceptional cyclic stability, along with self-decoupling thermal sensing (0.1 K resolution; 20.85 μV·K −1 sensitivity). This is paired with an ultrasensitive (21.86 kPa −1 ) toughened conductive thin film offering an ultrafast response (1.3 ms). By integrating these core sensors and spatial frequency encoding circuits into distinct spatial hierarchies to mimic the mechanism of the biological spinal tactile nerves, we realize signal-separable bus transmission and effectively emulate the typical firing dynamics of fast-adapting, slow-adapting, and thermal receptors. Finally, a large language model-driven iterative model is introduced, which synthesizes multimodal data to achieve nuanced comprehension of physical properties (compliance, roughness, and thermal insulation) and establish personalized classification criteria aligned with subjective user perception (94% accuracy). Real-world applications demonstrate that this holistic biomimetic design endows the robots with sensory acuity to extract rich multimodal information, laying a foundation for enhancing their understanding of physical properties.

Hierarchically porous CNF-CNT@PANI nanocomposite aerogels for flexible supercapacitors with high specific capacitance and electrochemical stability

Huixiang Wang,Xinchao Yang,Jing Wang,Ya Lu

Flexible supercapacitors have emerged as promising energy storage devices, owing to their high power density and long cycle life. However, the development of electrode materials with high specific capacitance, superior electrochemical and mechanical stability remains a critical challenge. In this work, we report a facile strategy for fabricating cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-carbon nanotube (CNT)@polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite aerogels via TEMPO oxidation, freeze-drying, and in-situ polymerization. The CNFs serve as a dispersive scaffold to uniformly distribute CNTs, forming a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected network, while PANI coats the CNF-CNT hybrid to construct a core-shell structure, enhancing pseudocapacitive performance. The resulting CNF-CNT@PANI aerogel exhibits a hierarchical porous structure with a high specific surface area of 121.4 m 2 g -1 and low density of 12.8 mg cm -3 . The assembled flexible supercapacitors deliver a high areal specific capacitance of 722.4 mF cm -2 at 2 mA cm -2 , long-term capacitive cyclic stability (86% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles), and remarkable mechanical stability (95.2% capacitance retention after 200 bending cycles). Additionally, the device achieves a maximum areal energy density of 99.5 μWh cm -2 at a power density of 1005.4 μW cm -2 , outperforming many reported PANI-based supercapacitors. This work provides a feasible approach for designing high-performance flexible electrode materials for next-generation energy storage systems.

N-halamine modified cotton dressing with thermosensitive antibacterial-antifouling switchable surface for wound healing

Shumin Zhang,Li Xu,Yusi Wang,Wenhao Yang,Cheng Zhou,Jianda Xu

Surface biofouling of cotton gauze dressings greatly promotes biofilm formation and delays wound healing. Herein a reversibly thermoresponsive switchable biointerface strategy is proposed to regulate the antibacterial and antifouling activity of cotton dressings for promoting wound healing. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) brushes are covalently grafted onto cotton fibers to form a durable antifouling underlayer, followed by in situ polymerization of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNI) and subsequent chlorination to generate N-halamine antibacterial groups of N-Cl. In the initial antibacterial state, the outer chlorinated PNI layer releases available active chlorine upon bacterial contact, enabling fast disinfection and efficient biofilm disruption. After chlorine consumption, the PNI recovers its thermosensitive structure and collapses at wound-relevant temperature, exposing the PEG brushes underlayer and switching the interface to an antifouling state. The resulting dressing exhibited rapid and rechargeable antibacterial activity, effective biofilm disruption, excellent biocompatibility, and markedly accelerated healing of infected wounds. This bilayer architecture provides a practical route to reconcile rapid disinfection with sustained antifouling at wound biointerface.

Nanocellulose based nitrogen-doped carbon/Ni-Co layered double hydroxide composite aerogels for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes

Tingxue Li,Siling Chen,Xichen Yu,Yang Hu,Hongmei Qin,Chuanxi Xiong,Quanling Yang,Zhuqun Shi

To enhance the electrochemical performance of flexible electronic devices, it is crucial to develop electrode materials with high specific capacitance. The nitrogen-doped carbon aerogel (CA) was synthesized through freeze-drying and carbonization of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril aerogel. Inspired by porous media interface strategies, a nitrogen-doped carbon/ nickel-cobalt (Ni-Co) layered double hydroxide composite aerogel (CA-N@LDH) with a hierarchical porous structure was fabricated using a solution deposition method with controlled precursor concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization confirmed that the Ni-Co layered double hydroxides were uniformly loaded on the surface of the mesoporous carbon framework in a flower-like layered structure, achieving a specific surface area of 111.8 m²/g and pore size mainly of around 5 nm. When the addition of the precursor was 0.4 mmol, the composite exhibited a specific capacitance of 1892.7 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g, which represents a 6.7 times enhancement compared with pure nitrogen-doped (N-doped) carbon aerogel. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed the synergistic pseudocapacitive contributions from the Co²⁺/Co³ ⁺ and Ni²⁺/Ni³ ⁺ redox pairs, while the graphite-like N introduced by N doping reduced the charge transfer resistance by 42%. This study provides new insights into the design of composite electrodes with high specific capacitance and stability.
