Abstract An oil-in-water microemulsion is an excellent candidate medium for the electrochemical regeneration of the coenzyme NADH and its subsequent coupled conversion application due to its good electrical conductivity and solubilization capacity for hydrophobic substrates. In this work, the reduced methyl viologen (MV+•)-mediated electrochemical reduction of coenzyme NAD+ was studied in a Triton X-100 (TX-100)-stabilized methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)-in-water microemulsion. The effects of the surfactant concentration and the oil content on the electrochemical behavior of the MV2+/MV+• couple and the activity of diaphorase (DH) were systematically investigated. The results show that in the microemulsion, the couple exhibits excellent reversibility. Compared with the aqueous buffer system, the couple in the microemulsion system has a more positive formal potential and a lower redox peak current, depending on the levels of both the surfactant and the oil. The positive shift of the formal potential is attributed to the stabilizing effect of the surfactant aggregates on the relatively hydrophobic MV+• species, and the decrease of the redox currents is ascribed to the decrease of the electroactive area of the electrode due to the adsorption of the surfactant and the oil as well as the decrease of the diffusion coefficients of MV species associated with or solubilized in the surfactant aggregates. The activity of DH in the microemulsion system also depends on the TX-100 concentration and the MTBE content. Increases in both [TX-100] and [MTBE] result in a decrease in DH activity. This phenomenon could be explained based on the [TX-100]/[MTBE]-dependent changes in the local acidity and the local concentration of the substrate DCPIP in the microemulsions. Based on cyclic voltammetry, the MV+•-mediated electroreduction of NAD+ in the TX-100-stabilized MTBE/H2O (0.1 M PB, pH = 7.0) microemulsion was studied. For the microemulsion system containing 0.5 mM MV2+, 5 mM NAD+, and 26.6 μM DH, when a scan rate of 2 mV s–1 was applied, a typical steady-state S-shaped CV curve was obtained. UV–vis spectroscopy confirms that the NADH generated by the mediated reaction is bioactive. By coupling the MV+•-mediated NADH electrochemical regeneration reaction with the horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (HLADH)-catalyzed reduction of the hydrophobic substrate 4-phenyl-2-butanone, the enantiomerically pure (S)-4-phenyl-2-butanol can be selectively obtained. After 12 h, the yield of the product in the microemulsion is approximately 10 times that in the DMSO-buffer mixed homogeneous system. This difference in yield is caused by the differences in enzyme activity and stability, as well as in the substrate local concentration and reactivity in the two systems. The present study indicates that the TX-100-stabilized MTBE-in-water microemulsion is a suitable medium for the electrochemical regeneration of NADH and the electroenzymatic conversion of water-insoluble substrates catalyzed by NADH-dependent oxidoreductases.

A novel silica-supported tert-butyl 2-picolyamino-N-acetate chelating resin (Si-AMPY-1) was successfully synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, SEM and 13 C CP/MAS NMR. The adsorption behaviors of the Si-AMPY-1 resin for Cu(II) and Ni(II) were studied with batch and column methods. The batch experiments indicated that the Si-AMPY-1 resin adsorbed Ni(II) mainly via physisorption, while adsorbed Cu(II) via chemisorption. The column dynamic breakthrough curves revealed that the Si-AMPY-1 resin can efficiently separate Cu(II) from the simulated nickel electrolyte before the breakthrough point. Moreover, the concentration of Cu(II) in the column effluent was decreased to be less than 3 mg/L within the first 43 BV (bed volumes), and the mass ratio of Cu/Ni was 21:1 in the saturated resin, which completely satisfied the industrial requirements of the nickel electrorefining process. Therefore, it was concluded that the Si-AMPY-1 resin can be a promising candidate for the deep removal of Cu(II) from the nickel electrolyte.

Thousands of contaminants are used worldwide and eventually released into the environment, presenting a challenge of health risk assessment. The identification of key toxic pathways and characterization of interactions with target biomacromolecules are essential for health risk assessments. The adverse outcome pathway (AOP) incorporates toxic mechanisms into health risk assessment by emphasizing the relationship among molecular initiating events (MIEs), key events (KEs), and adverse outcome (AO). Herein, we attempted the use of AOP to decipher the toxic effects of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (2,6-DTBP) and its para-quinone metabolite 2,6-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DTBQ) based on integrated transcriptomics, molecular modeling, and cell-based assays. Through transcriptomics and quantitative real-time PCR validation, we identified retinoic acid receptor β (RARβ) as the key target biomacromolecule. The epigenetic analysis and molecular modeling revealed RARβ interference as one MIE, including DNA methylation and conformational changes. In vitro assays extended subsequent KEs, including altered protein expression of p-Erk1/2 and COX-2, and promoted cancer cell H4IIE proliferation and metastasis. These toxic effects altogether led to carcinogenic risk as the AO of 2,6-DTBP and 2,6-DTBQ, in line with chemical carcinogenesis identified from transcriptome profiling. Overall, our simplified AOP network of 2,6-DTBP and 2,6-DTBQ facilitates relevant health risk assessment.

As an oil-soluble antioxidant, tert -butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is widely used in edible oils, so accurate control of its content is significant for food safety. Here, a CdIn 2 S 4 /SnIn 4 S 8 S-scheme heterojunction structure was constructed by in-situ growth of smooth flower-like CdIn 2 S 4 on rough three-dimensional SnIn 4 S 8 microspheres via a one-pot co-precipitation technique. Subsequently, TBHQ was combined with CdIn 2 S 4 /SnIn 4 S 8 /GCE, and the photocurrent signal was significantly increased, which could be detected in the concentration range from 0.02 to 150 μM, with the limit of detection as low as 2 nM. The reaction mechanism of CdIn 2 S 4 /SnIn 4 S 8 composites was verified by using density functional theory calculations. Meanwhile, the reason for the outstanding detection of TBHQ was investigated by exploring the electrostatic potential and the related redox potential. In addition, the sensor was demonstrated to have excellent recoveries by comparing UV–Vis spectrophotometry for the detection of TBHQ in peanut oil, canola oil, blended oil, and soybean oil.

Tert -Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a phenolic antioxidant commonly found in edible oils. However, excessive amounts of TBHQ can adversely affect food quality due to its toxic and mutagenic effects, which may cause human injury and present carcinogenic risks. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop a sensitive and accurate analytical method for the rapid detection of TBHQ. In this work, hierarchical flower-structured spherical SnIn 4 S 8 and pyramidal Bi 2 O 3 were combined to obtain the Z-scheme SnIn 4 S 8 /Bi 2 O 3 heterojunction. Under irradiation, the electron transport channel of this heterojunction facilitated the combination of electrons in the conduction band of Bi 2 O 3 with holes in the valence band of SnIn 4 S 8 , which decreased the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and improved the photoelectric response. After the addition of TBHQ, the adsorption effect on the electrode surface and the oxidation reaction with holes in the valence band of Bi 2 O 3 further promoted the charge transfer and separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, which led to a rapid increase in the photocurrent to realize the detection of TBHQ in environmental and food samples. The increase in photocurrent has been linearly correlated with the logarithm of the concentration of TBHQ in the range of 1.00–500 μM with a limit of detection of 0.526 μM. Furthermore, the sensor showed excellent selectivity in the presence of a wide range of analogs. This study provides a novel scheme for the precise detection of TBHQ and the construction of high-performance photoelectrochemical Z-scheme heterojunctions.

This study investigated the interactions between pepsin (PEP) and the organophosphite antioxidant Irgafos 168 (I 168), its metabolite 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (24DP), focusing on structural, functional, and antioxidant implications. UV–Vis absorption spectra, fluorescence lifetimes and Stern-Volmer quenching analyses show that I 168/24DP statically bursts PEP with high binding affinity. Thermodynamic parameters, molecular docking analyses and molecular dynamics simulations (e.g. RMSD, Rg) indicate that the spontaneous formation of the stable complexes is mainly driven by van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. I 168 exhibited higher pepsin inhibition (6.97 %–27.51 %) than 24DP (5.04 %–19.29 %), with dose-dependent suppression linked to altered catalytic residue accessibility (e.g., Asp32/Asp215, Tyr75) and disrupted proton transfer efficiency. Structural analyses revealed I 168 increased PEP's flexibility and hydrophobic residue exposure, while 24DP enhanced rigidity and compactness. Antioxidant assays showed 24DP's superior DPPH scavenging capacity (9.45 %–47.35 %) compared to I 168 (2.28 %–8.00 %), though PEP significantly suppressed 24DP's antioxidant efficacy. These findings underscore the necessity of evaluating both parent compounds and metabolites in safety assessments, as metabolic processes retained biological impacts on enzymatic and antioxidant functions. The study provides critical insights into the molecular mechanisms of antioxidant-induced enzyme inhibition and highlights risks to digestive health and food safety.

Aiming at developing more biocompatible and economic separation platforms, aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) composed of deep eutectic solvents (DES) and tert-butanol were proposed for the first time. The effects of key factors such as the hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) properties and temperature on the phase-forming ability of DES/tert-butanol ABS were investigated. Meanwhile, syringic acid and eugenol mixtures were selected as model biomolecules to evaluate the efficiency of DES/tert-butanol ABS to use as liquid–liquid extraction systems. The results indicated that DES components migrated preferentially to the bottom phase while tert-butanol was concentrated in the top phase. The more hydrophilic HBD or lower temperature was responsible for greater efficiency to induce the formation of DES/tert-butanol ABS. The reason for phase separation was the incompatibility of the hydrogen-bond acceptor (HBA) and HBD with tert-butanol in aqueous solution, where the higher hydrophilic HBD enriched favorably in the lower phase, allowing for the formation of the DES/tert-butanol ABS. The selective separation of syringic acid and eugenol was a consequence of the HBD characters, temperature, and tie-lines length of the ABS, and they could be greatly separated by using the ABS composed of betaine-xylitol (DES) and tert-butanol at 298.15 K. The highest extraction efficiency of syringic acid and eugenol was 91.64 and 97.62%, respectively. Further, syringic acid and eugenol as well as DES can be recovered and reused by using water as the antisolvent and the vacuum distillation method. This study may be expected to lay a solid foundation for the expansion of DES-based ABS and selective separation of similar biomolecules.

We report a convenient, highly efficient, and universal approach for blood-compatible modification of polymer membrane based on the SI-eATRP, RAFT, and self-assembly of N - tert -butyl amide and β -cyclodextrin existed in macromolecules chains. The functional membrane surfaces with any polymer chains of hydrophilic, ionic polymer, and polysaccharide segments, for example, the copolymers of N -vinyl pyrrolidone, sodium p -styrenesulfonate hydrate, and glucose allyl amide, are easily designed and fabricated; and the thickness of polymer brushes are efficiently controlled by polymerization conditions like monomer concentration and initiator amount. As a key bio-plastic, the modified polyethersulfone membrane shows suppressed platelet adhesion, significant decreases in thrombin-antithrombin generation, and the complement activations on C3a and C5a levels compared with pristine polyethersulfone membrane; while the platelet activation (PF4) decreased. Due to the similar groups as heparin-like structure, the modified membrane effectively prolonged the activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, and prothrombin time. The water contact angle of the modified membrane decreases from 89.2 to 22.3°, and the cytocompatibility of the modified membranes largely enhanced. It could be concluded that the new approach could be widely used for polymer membrane modification, and the mimic heparin-like surface seems to be a promising structure to improve the biocompatibility for blood purification application.

Reliable quantitative analysis using electrochemical sensors remains a challenge due to the differences in the effective area after surface modification of the electrodes, resulting in poor precision of the signals between electrodes. Herein, a novel quantitative approach called standard curved surface for the electrochemical detection is reported which does not require identical electrodes, high modification, or the use of internal standards that may cause calibration interferences. The technique is based upon the principle that the current is linearly correlated with the electroactive area of the electrodes. By introducing the electroactive area as a new variable into the standard curve, a three-dimensional standard curved surface was obtained to correct for differences among electrodes, thereby improving the accuracy of electrochemical detection. Furthermore, it was applied to the determination of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) in edible oil. Compared with the traditional standard curve, the reported method reduced the relative standard deviation values from 13.22% to 4.01%. The current response was linear with the concentration of TBHQ between 5 × 10−6 and 1.25 × 10−3 mol/L. The limit of detection was 1.07 × 10−6 mol/L and the spike recovery was from 90.44% to 112.09%. Therefore, a universal calibration method has been reported with expected additional applications for electrochemical sensors.

For separation of the azeotropes of water + 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol by liquid–liquid extraction, methyl tert-butyl ether or butyl acetate or 4-methyl-2-pentanone or 2-ethyl-1-hexanol was selected as the extraction solvent. The liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for water + 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol + (methyl tert-butyl ether/butyl acetate/4-methyl-2-pentanone/2-ethyl-1-hexanol) ternary systems at 308.2 K under 101.3 kPa were determined. The distribution coefficient and the separation factor were calculated to evaluate the extraction ability of different solvents. The Othmer–Tobias, Bachman, and Hand equations were applied to verify the reliability of the experimental LLE data. Meanwhile, the experimental LLE data were successfully correlated by the NRTL and UNIQUAC models with the root-mean-square deviations (RMSD) were less than 0.42%.

Cesium is an important strategic resource, and solvent extraction is the most frequently used technology for its extraction from various minerals and brines. However, this common method faces operational and cost problems owing to large alkali consumption. A synergistic extraction system consisting of 4- tert -butyl-2-(α-methylbenzyl) phenol (t-BAMBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) was designed and used to extract Cs + from an alkali-free solution. The effects of variables such as: (i) pH, (ii) concentration of t-BAMBP and D2EHPA, (iii) temperature, (iv) Cs + concentration, and (v) coexisting cations, on the Cs + extraction performance of the synergistic system were investigated. The most suitable organic phase composition was 1.0 mol/L t-BAMBP and 0.1 mol/L D2EHPA in kerosene, and the synergistic coefficient was up to 57 at 25 °C and an organic/aqueous phase volume ratio of 1/1. The extraction sequence of cations using the t-BAMBP–D2EHPA synergistic system followed the descending order Cs + > Rb + > Ca 2+ > K + > Li + > Mg 2+ > Na + . The chemical formula of the extracted species was determined as [CsA(HA)(ROH) 2 ] using the slope method. The Cs + extraction process is an exothermic reaction with an enthalpy ( ΔH o ) of −55.3 kJ mol −1 , confirmed by the thermodynamic study. After three-stage countercurrent extraction, the extraction efficiency of Cs + was 92.6%, demonstrating excellent selectivity from coexisting cations. The t-BAMBP–D2EHPA synergistic system showed outstanding economic and environmental advantages and a good application prospect to develop a conceptual process flowsheet for extraction with this system and stripping with HCl to separate cesium salt from salt-lake brine.
