Multi-walled carbon nanotube-based ternary rare earth (Eu3+, Tb3+) hybrid materials with organically modified silica–oxygen bridge

Qiu-Ping Li,Bing Yan

A series of ternary rare earth (Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ ) complexes are covalently coated to the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) by a simple in situ sol–gel method by the bifunctional silylated monomer TTA-Si and TAA-Si (TTA-Si and TAA-Si are 3-(triethoxysilyl)propylisocyanate (TEPIC) modified thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) and trifluoroacetylacetone (TAA), respectively). The resulting materials are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electronic microscope, transmission electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, ultraviolet visible diffused reflection measure, photoluminescence spectra, and X-ray diffraction. The photoluminesce measurements indicated that these hybrids exhibit characteristic red and green luminescence originating from the corresponding ternary rare earth ion (Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ ). The luminescence quenching effect of MWCNT networks have been successfully restrained by coating a relatively thicker silica–oxygen-based organic–inorganic complex. Furthermore, the fluorescence lifetimes and emission quantum efficiencies of Eu 3+ hybrid materials are also determined.

Tunable luminescence and energy transfer in Tb3+,Eu3+ co-doped Gd2Zr2O7 phosphors with high thermal stability for WLEDs

Qi Wu,Mengmeng Fu,Chenzhang Gu,Yinzhen Wang,Lu Yao,Cailin Wang

Red phosphors with good thermal stability, high color temperature and color purity are critical in high power warm white LED devices. Herein, a series of single and co-doped Tb 3+ ,Eu 3+ polychromatic phosphors with pyrochlore structure based on Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 have been prepared for the first time by a conventional solid phase reaction method. Compared to single doped Eu 3+ phosphors, Tb 3+ ,Eu 3+ co-doped phosphors possess following advantages: improved UV absorption, increased photoluminescence intensity, extended luminescence range and improved thermal stability. At room temperature, the Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Tb 3+ ,Eu 3+ phosphors exhibited a gradual shift from yellow-green emission at 544 nm to orange-red emission at 613 nm with increasing doping of Eu 3+ ions. Energy transfer efficiency has been evaluated to be 71% by analyzing the fluorescence lifetime of Tb 3+ ions. The concentration quenching mechanism under different conditions was analyzed in detail and it was concluded that the quenching of Tb 3+ is caused by dipole-dipole interaction. In addition, the activation energy (ΔE a ) of the Gd 1.92 Zr 2 O 7 :0.03Tb 3+ ,0.05Eu 3+ phosphor was calculated to be as high as 0.2674 eV compared to other Tb 3+ , Eu 3+ co-doped phosphors, demonstrating its high thermal stability. WLEDs devices based on Gd 1.92 Zr 2 O 7 :0.03Tb 3+ ,0.05Eu 3+ phosphors have been prepared, which have low correlated color temperature (CCT) (5283 K), high color rendering index Ra = 85.5 K) and CIE coordinates chromaticity coordinate (0.3371,0.3333). All of the results show that Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Tb 3+ ,Eu 3+ phosphors provide a new avenue to develop high quality red emission and high thermal stability phosphors for WLEDs.

Nanoarchitectonics of Ln3+ (Eu3+/Tb3+)-induced polyelectrolyte aggregates (LIPAs) for multicolor luminescence in 3D-printed poly(Lactic acid)

Jin Liu,Yaowei Guo,Yupeng Bi,Yao Wang,Yanxin Wang,Matt J. Kipper,Laurence A. Belfiore,Jianguo Tang

Reversible bright-dark luminescence nanomaterials have been developed for information storage and anti-counterfeiting in recent years, however, their monochrome characteristic and 2D patterning impose limits on the effective information storage density. In this work, a new strategy for producing ultraviolet switchable and stable luminescent patterns is proposed, based on Ln 3+ (Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ ) induced-polyelectrolyte aggregates (LIPAs) with sharp multi-color optical properties . Under 365 nm excitation, a multicolor pattern can be observed using both red and green, which is not visible when this excitation light source is off. The LIPAs enable the luminescent lanthanide complexes to be compatibilized with poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Functional anti-counterfeiting patterns were prepared by 3D printing using luminescent PLA containing by Ln 3+ (Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ ) LIPAs. Invisible, adjustable and ultra-stable multicolor luminescent patterns well enable information storage and enhance information security for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Investigation of the antibacterial effect, osteogenic activity, and tracing properties of hydroxyapatite co-doped with Tb3+ and Zn2+

Juan Wu,Ya-qi Chi,Yu-jia Yan,Meng-zhen Ji,Xuan Chen,Xue-qin Yang,Yuan Gao,Qin Zou,Ling Zou,Xi-yu Li

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a biomimetic biomaterial that has been widely used in bone repair for many years. However, the increased risk of infection after surgery and long-time tracing for the material distribution and degradation during bone reconstruction remain challenges in the clinic. Zinc (Zn) is considered as an indispensable microelement for humans and is characterized with antibacterial action and osteogenic activity. Terbium (Tb), a rare-earth element, emits stable fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Here, Tb3+/Zn2+ co-doped hydroxyapatite (HA:Tb/Zn) was prepared to synchronously realize the antibacterial effect, osteogenic activity, and long-time tracing property. We found that HA:Tb/Zn had a strong antibacterial effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative clinical infectious bacteria, as well as improved osteogenic activity. HA:Tb/Zn also displayed stable green fluorescence in vitro and in vivo, which indicated great potential for recognizing the material changes during the bone reconstruction process. The combination of the ternary functions is of great significance to control the overuse of antibiotics and realize long-time tracing, and provide a versatile design on biomaterials in bone repair.

Bi3+ and Tb3+ Co-doped Cs2AgInCl6 Lead-free double perovskite nanocrystals for detection of temperature and copper ions

Ruixin Song,Sai Xu,You Li,Qun Zhang,Yuefeng Gao,Hongquan Yu,Yongze Cao,Xiangping Li,Shanpeng Zhang,Baojiu Chen

The content of Cu 2+ in lubricating oil and lubricant temperature are important indicators predicting mechanical failure. Therefore, developing a nontoxic fluorescence probe is necessary to detect Cu 2+ and temperature in lubricating oil. The lead-free inorganic double perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) Cs 2 AgInCl 6 are potential candidates. However, the low fluorescence intensity and the high excitation energy required of Cs 2 AgInCl 6 NCs limit their practical applications. In this study, Bi 3+ and Tb 3+ were successfully co-doped into Cs 2 AgInCl 6 NCs via the hot-injection method. The doping of Bi 3+ produces a broad emission originating from self-trapped excitons and reduces the excitation energy, allowing commercial LEDs as excitation sources. Tb 3+ ions doping offers characteristic emission peaks ( 5 D 0 - 7 F J ) of Tb 3+ ions and improves the fluorescence intensity of Cs 2 AgInCl 6 NCs. Furthermore, the Cs 2 AgInCl 6 : Bi 3+ /Tb 3+ NCs have been employed as optical thermometry, which provide a temperature calibration curve with the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of 2.15% K −1 at 350 K and 2.25% K −1 at 303 K in the temperature range of 303–423 K, respectively. Finally, the nanocrystals have been applied to detect Cu 2+ in lubricating oil. The fluorescent probe shows a good detection sensitivity of 8.94 × 10 -4 nM −1 and a low detection limit of 14.3 nM in the range of 10–300 nM. This work not merely offers a novel way for improving the luminescence performances of double perovskite NCs Cs 2 AgInCl 6 , but broadens their potential for detection of Cu 2+ and temperature.

Dipicolinic Acid-Tb3+/Eu3+ Lanthanide Fluorescence Sensor Array for Rapid and Visual Discrimination of Botanical Origin of Honey

Xijuan Tu,Yunmin Tao,Jiaxu Chen,Chunping Du,Qian Jin,Yuchang He,Ji Yang,Shaokang Huang,Wenbin Chen

In the present study, a lanthanide fluorescence sensor array was developed for the discrimination of honey’s botanical origin. Dipicolinic acid (DPA) was used as the antenna ligand for sensitizing the fluorescence of Tb3+and Eu3+to prepare the DPA-Tb3+/Eu3+complex. This lanthanide fluorescence sensor showed a cross-reactive response to the major constituents of honey, which led to the result that different classes of honey solution exhibited distinct quenching effects on the fluorescence of the DPA-Tb3+/Eu3+complex. Furthermore, a fluorescence sensor array composed of ten sensors was constructed by adjusting the pH and the component of the DPA-Tb3+/Eu3+complex to show multivariate responses towards honey. The visual fluorescence image of the sensor array was recorded by using a smartphone under excitation with portable UV lamp. Results indicated that the pattern of the visual image was related with the botanical origin. After extracting the RGB value of each sensor in 96-well plate, the ratio of R/G was used for principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that three classes of honey (astragalus, logan, and litchi) were well distinguished. Moreover, the value of principal component 1 (PC1) showed good linearity with the composition of mixing honey and could be used for semi-quantitative analysis. The proposed lanthanide fluorescence sensor array presents a visual and portable method for the discrimination of a honey’s origin without the use of analytical instruments, and might provide a novel and simple strategy for the measurement of food origin. Keywords:honey;botanical origin;lanthanide complex;fluorescence;sensor array

Enhanced X-ray-induced luminescence and persistent luminescence of NaLuF4:Tb3+ nanoparticles with Li+ and Gd3+ co-doped

Yangqing Wu,Mei Wang,Shaolian Sun,Shan Shao,Ziyu Pan,Jinkai Li,Haoming Wei,Bingqiang Cao

X-ray excitation photodynamic therapy is a new photodynamic therapy mode that induces tumor cell apoptosis by indirectly stimulating photosensitizer on nanoparticles with X-ray as excitation light source and generating singlet oxygen. It solves the problem of light penetration in traditional photodynamic therapy and realizes the treatment of deep tumors. At present, the weak X-ray-induced luminescence restricts further development of X-ray photodynamic therapy. NaLuF 4 :Li + /Gd 3+ /Tb 3+ rare-earth nanoparticles with uniform size and regular morphology were synthesized by solvothermal method . The X-ray-induced luminescence intensity of NaLuF 4 :Li + /Gd 3+ /Tb 3+ NPs was improved by Li + and Gd 3+ ions co-doping. The light yield of NaLuF 4 :Li + /Gd 3+ /Tb 3+ NPs with 5% Li + ions doping was 1.4 times than that of reference sample due to the change of crystal field symmetry. Furthermore, the effective lifetime of persistent luminescence increased from 221.5 s to 251.9 s after 15% Li + ions doping. The thermoluminescence curves confirmed that the trap concentration was increased after Li + ions doping, which was responsible for enhancing persistent luminescence lifetime . Long persistent luminescence emission laid a foundation for further application in photodynamic therapy.

Single phase white LED phosphor Ca3YAl3B4O15:Ce3+,Tb3+,Sm3+ with superior performance: Color-tunable and energy transfer study

Wasim Ullah Khan,Lei Zhou,Xiaohui Li,Weijie Zhou,Dilfaraz Khan,Shah-Iram Niaz,Mingmei Wu

The white light-emitting diodes, contributing as a light initiator for the succeeding generation, is now becoming a consistently developing and attractive research area. However, the weak thermal stability, high correlated color temperature (CCT), and low color rendering (Ra) restrict its effectiveness for large-scale implementation. In this work, we reported for the first time the incorporation of rare-earth ions Ce 3+ -Tb 3+ -Sm 3+ into Ca 3 YAl 3 B 4 O 15 (CYAB) in the fabrication of WLEDs, which showed tunable photoluminescence properties to accomplish exceptional thermal stability, single-phase white light emission, and efficient energy transfer among Ce 3+ , Tb 3+ , Sm 3+ ions, respectively. The crystal structure and the rare earth ion dopants in the cation borate CYAB phosphors were quantitatively evaluated, that highlighting the preferences at 9-fold-coordinated Y sites. The sensitization effects were studied by evaluating the photoluminescence, lifetime curves, and quantum efficiencies, respectively. Besides this, the CY 0.45 AB:0.50Tb 3+ ,0.05Sm 3+ and CY 0.65 AB:0.03Ce 3+ ,0.20Tb 3+ ,0.12Sm 3+ phosphors possess significant resistance towards thermal quenching phenomena. The white LED either containing CY 0.45 AB:0.50Tb 3+ ,0.05Sm 3+ phosphor blended with the commercial blue phosphor or the single-phase WLED only containing CY 0.65 AB:0.03Ce 3+ ,0.20Tb 3+ ,0.12Sm 3+ phosphor exhibited warm white emissions either with low CCT ≈ 4543 K or 3913 K and high Ra with 86.0 or 84.4, respectively. These results are superior to the commercial WLED containing Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ phosphor and blue LED chip (CCT ≈ 7746 K, Ra ≈ 75), that furnish either as a good candidate for the fabrication of warm WLED.

Ultra-low remanence and weak magnetic agglomeration of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles caused by high magnetic moment Tb3+ doping

Gong Pengyu,Chen Qingyun,Shih Kaimin,Liao Changzhong,Wang Lielin,Xie Hua,Deng Sihao

The structure and magnetic properties of the magnetite can be substantial corrected by incorporating foreign cations. In this work, Tb 3+ was successfully incorporated into magnetite and superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles were obtained, using solvothermal method. The doping of Tb 3+ greatly reduces the M r and H c values of the magnetite. Due to the doping of high magnetic moment Tb 3+ , the original magnetic moment of the magnetite is destroyed and magnetic domain are decomposed, resulting in a significant reduction in remanence and magnetic agglomeration. The remarkable effect of Tb 3+ doping degaussing will provide new prospects for the application of magnetite materials in the superparamagnetic direction.

Luminescence thermal enhancement property of Zn3Mo2O9:Yb3+/Tb3+(Eu3+) phosphor and the application for temperature sensing and anti-counterfeiting

Yuhong Zhang,Jingyi Zhang,Jingliang Zhang,Chenhao Han,Hang Liu

In this paper, a series of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ phosphor are prepared by solid-state reaction. The up-conversion(UC)/down-shifting(DS) luminescence properties are investigated in detail. The intensities of all emission bands present luminescence thermal enhancement under 980 nm excitation. From 293 to 493 K, the red emission intensity of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Eu 3+ sample increase by 2.36 times, and the green emission band intensity of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ sample increase by 4.85 times. The temperature-dependent cooperative energy transfer(CET) process of Yb 3+ ions has an important contribution to thermal enhancement due to the negative thermal expansion(NTE) of Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 matrix. In addition, the optical temperature sensing properties of the Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphor are discussed according to the luminescence intensity ratio(LIR) technique. Zn 3 Mo 2 O 9 :Yb 3+ /Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ phosphor can obtain bright deep red, yellow and orange light under the excitation of 395, 487 and 980 nm, which is used for multi-mode fluorescence anti-counterfeiting.

Single-Phase White Phosphor via Energy Transfer from Ce3+ to Sm3+/Tb3+ in Ca3LuAl3B4O15 for High-Quality UV LEDs

Yujie Wei,Ying Lv

Single-phase white phosphors are highly desirable for achieving stable white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). In this work, a series of Ce3+-, Tb3+-, and Sm3+-doped as well as codoped Ca3LuAl3B4O15 (CLAB) phosphors were successfully synthesized, and white light was achieved by tuning relative doping concentrations. The phase structure, morphology, and optical properties were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Energy transfer from the parity-allowed Ce3+ ions to the parity-forbidden Tb3+ and Sm3+ ions was confirmed through spectral analysis and comparison. Under 342 nm excitation, the optimized CLAB:1%Ce3+,2.5%Sm3+,10%Tb3+ phosphor exhibits warm-white-light emission originating from three activators. In addition, the phosphor retains 71% and 42% of its initial emission intensity at 450 and 600 K, respectively, demonstrating the good thermal stability of the phosphor. By combining the optimized CLAB:1%Ce3+,2.5%Sm3+,10%Tb3+ phosphor with a commercial 340 nm ultraviolet (UV) chip, a warm w-LED was fabricated, exhibiting CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.3631, 0.3625), a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4419 K, and a color rendering index (CRI) of 93. This study offers a newly designed single-phase white phosphor for high-quality warm w-LEDs.

Ultrathin scintillators enabled via rapidly growing large-area 2D lanthanide oxychloride doped with Eu3+/Tb3+ for X-ray imaging

Hao Chen,Liang Li,Xuefang Lu,Shunze Huang,Man Xia,Jianzhong Xu,Xiwei Lai,Zewenhui Zhang,Xin Qian,Tianyu Xu,Feng Huang,Richeng Lin

Ultrathin scintillators are key components of high-spatial-resolution X-ray detectors in medical imaging, high-precision nondestructive inspection, and high-energy physics. Currently, the spatial resolution of X-ray imaging detector generally is enabled by high-light-yield scintillators with minimal optical scattering. However, suppressing optical scattering losses typically require the scintillation layers thinner than a few tens of micrometers, which is difficult to obtain through conventional top-down mechanical thinning. Here, a bottom-up method that rapidly growing inch-sized, Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ doped lanthanide oxychloride (LaOCl) films via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is proposed to obtain large-area ultrathin scintillators. The doping Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ ions act as luminescent activators and provide strong red and green scintillation through efficient f-f intra-configurational transitions, which are shielded from the host lattice by the outer 5s 2 5p 6 electron shells, resulting in sharp emission lines and high quantum efficiency. The layered crystal structure of LaOCl further facilitates anisotropic growth, enabling precise control of film thickness from a few atomic layers up to the micrometer scale. The growing LaOCl:Eu 3+ film with thickness of approximately 30 μm shows a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 99.3%, and demonstrating an ultralow X-ray dose-rate detection limit of 143.41 nGy s −1 , owing to efficient energy transfer from the LaOCl host to the activator ions. Furthermore, the growing LaOCl:Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ films exhibit excellent linear response and radiation hardness under X-ray exposure, retaining above 95% of their initial intensity after prolonged cyclic irradiation at 27.8 μGy s −1 for 24,000 s. These results demonstrate CVD-grown LaOCl:Ln films as a promising platform for high-resolution and low-dose X-ray imaging detection. An ultrathin scintillator film is fabricated via an unconventional bottom-up chemical vapor deposition–driven evaporation growth method. The oriented attachment and layer-by-layer stacking of LaOCl:Ln 3+ crystal nuclei enables the fabrication of centimeter-scale ultrathin films with controllable thickness. The doping Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ act as luminescent activators, generating intense red and green emissions through efficient 4f-4f intra-configurational transitions. Owing to the effective shielding of the outer 5s 2 5p 6 electron shells, these transitions exhibit sharp emission lines and exceptionally high quantum efficiency. For LaOCl:Eu 3+ films with a thickness of approximately 30 μm, the photoluminescence quantum yields achieves a near unit of 99.3%, demonstrating an ultralow X-ray detection limits of 143.41 nGy s −1 and outstanding radiation stability.
