Tuning the feature sizes and surface moiety groups of a two-dimensional (2D) sheet material has been regarded as the most effective strategy for achieving desired physical and chemical properties. The newly emerging transition-metal carbide or nitride sheets, generally referred to as MXenes, are of interest to the research community owing to their versatile behavior. While the chemical stability of MXenes is of pivotal importance to their real applications, a systematic study of examining the effect of their surface and lateral size on the resulting chemical stability is still lacking. Herein, by systematically varying the synthesis parameters, we obtained both regular and ultrasmall Ti3C2 sheets with different surfaces, namely, Al oxyanions or OH/F. To investigate the chemical stability and sustainability of each Ti3C2 sheet in an oxidizing environment, including an ambient atmosphere and a H2O2 medium, the evolution of phase, morphology, and optical behavior was carefully studied. The sheets covered with Al oxyanions had greater structural stability than those covered with the other species considered in this study, which may be due to the Al oxyanions acting like a shield and passivating the surface in the oxidizing atmosphere. Regarding the effect of feature size, thinner sheets or those with smaller lateral dimensions showed improved oxidation resistance, which could be due to the difficulty encountered in the structural recrystallization from Ti3C2 to oxidized product TiO2. This study provides a deeper understanding of MXenes and a method to efficiently engineer structures with desired performances.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing has emerged as a simple and practical method for the analysis and detection, its separated optical signal and detection electrical signal give it the advantages of reduced background noise and outstanding sensitivity. Here, we synthesized a Ti 3 C 2 /Cu 2 O composite through simple oil bath heating process, whose excellent PEC performance and sensitive photoelectric response to glucose make it a propitious substitution to glucose oxidase . On this basis, we construct a PEC non-enzymatic sensor based on the Ti 3 C 2 /Cu 2 O heterostructure for the detection of glucose. Under the optimal conditions, the photocurrent of Ti 3 C 2 /Cu 2 O is linear with the logarithm value of glucose concentration in the wide range of 0.5 nM to 0.5 mM with a detection limit of 0.17 nM. Furthermore, the successful detection of glucose in standard samples and human serum by the proposed Ti 3 C 2 /Cu 2 O based PEC non-enzymatic sensor demonstrates the application prospect of heterostructure material in PEC sensor, which provides a new thought for the design and construction of PEC non-enzymatic sensing platform.

Here we reported the preparation of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and Ti 2 C MXene by etching Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 2 AlC with various fluoride salts in hydrochloric acid (HCl), including lithium fluoride (LiF), sodium fluoride (NaF), potassium fluoride (KF), and ammonium fluoride (NH 4 F). As-prepared Ti 2 C was further delaminated by urea, dimethylsulfoxide or ammonium hydroxide. Based on theoretical calculation and XPS results, the type of positive ions (Li + , Na + , K + , or NH 4 + ) in etchant solution affect the surface structure of prepared MXene, which, in turn, affects the methane adsorption properties of MXene. The highest methane adsorption capacity is 8.5 cm 3 /g for Ti 3 C 2 and 11.6 cm 3 /g for Ti 2 C. MXenes made from LiF and NH 4 F can absorb methane under high pressure and can keep methane under normal pressure, these MXenes may have important application on capturing methane or other hazardous gas molecules. MXenes made from NaF and KF can absorb methane under high pressure and release methane under low pressure. They can have important application in the adsorb storage of nature gas.

Herein we report a simple and facile method to delaminate MXene Ti 3 C 2 multilayers by the assistance of surface modification using aryl diazonium salts. The basic strategy involved the preparation of layered MAX Ti 3 AlC 2 and the exfoliation of Ti 3 AlC 2 into Ti 3 C 2 multilayers, followed by Na + intercalation and surface modification using sulfanilic acid diazonium salts. The resulting chemically grafted Ti 3 C 2 flakes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm the presence of the surface organic species. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy revealed that surface-modified MXene Ti 3 C 2 sheets disperse well in water and the solutions obey Lambert–Beer’s law. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to demonstrate the morphology and structure of delaminating MXene Ti 3 C 2 flakes. The results indicated that chemical modification for MXene multilayers by aryl diazonium salts induced swelling that conversely weakened the bonds between MX layers, hence leading to large-scale delamination of multilayered MXene Ti 3 C 2 via mild sonication. Advantages of the present approach rely not only on the simplicity and efficiency of the delamination procedure but also on the grafting of aryl groups to MXene surfaces, highly suitable for further applications of the newly discovered two-dimensional materials.

Graphical In the present study, the blue fluorescent L-Cys@Ti 3 C 2 MQDs are synthesized using hydrothermal methods, and the preparation process is simple, rapid, and mild. The fluorescence of L-Cys@Ti 3 C 2 MQDs can be effectively quenched by Ag + through a static quenching mechanism, demonstrating high sensitivity and excellent selectivity for Ag + detection. MXene quantum dots (MQDs), an emerging zero-dimensional nanomaterial, have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their distinctive physical and chemical properties. In this study, cysteine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs were synthesized using a facile hydrothermal methods, resulting in the functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs exhibiting intense blue fluorescence attributed to size-dependent effects and surface defects. Furthermore, the cysteine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent emission behavior and serve as a highly sensitive fluorescent probe for Ag + detection with an impressive low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.015 μM. Moreover, they demonstrate exceptional sensitivity and selectivity in determining Ag + . This study presents a novel approach for the detection of Ag + and highlights the immense potential of cysteine-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MQDs in environmental applications.

Desalination processes frequently require a lot of energy to generate freshwater and energy, which depletes resources. Their reliance on each other creates tension between these two vital resources. Herein, hierarchical MXene nanosheets and bismuth vanadate (Ti 3 C 2 /BiVO 4 )-derived microcapsules were synthesized for a photothermal-induced photoredox reaction for twofold applications, namely, solar-driven water evaporation and hydrogen (H 2 ) production. For this purpose, flexible aerogels were fabricated by introducing Ti 3 C 2 /BiVO 4 microcapsules in the polymeric network of natural rubber latex (NRL-Ti 3 C 2 /BiVO 4 ), and a high evaporation rate of 2.01 kg m −2 h −1 was achieved under 1-kW m −2 solar intensity. The excellent performance is attributed to the presence of Ti 3 C 2 /BiVO 4 microcapsules in the polymeric network, which provides balanced hydrophilicity and broadband sun absorption (96 %) and is aimed at plasmonic heating with microscale thermal confinement tailored by heat transfer simulations. Notably, localized plasmonic heating at the catalyst active sites of the Ti 3 C 2 /BiVO 4 heterostructure promotes enhanced photocatalytic H 2 production evolved after 4 h of reaction is 9.39 μmol, which is highly efficient than pure BiVO 4 and Ti 3 C 2 . This method turns the issue of water–fuel crisis into a collaborative connection, presenting avenues to collectively address the anticipated demand rather than fostering competition.

Solar photocatalytic hydrogen production shows promise in addressing global energy and environmental concerns. The limited efficiency of photocatalysts is mainly due to ineffective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. To improve this, we enhance the TiO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 heterojunction by in-situ oxidation through interfacial engineering , resulting in a more compact composition . Subsequently, we anchor single-atom Pt at the TiO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 interface through photo-Ti 3 C 2 reduction. The in-situ growth of TiO 2 on Ti 3 C 2 introduces an interfacial driving force for carrier separation and provides a channel for electron transfer from TiO 2 to Ti 3 C 2 . This further facilitates transfer onto Pt, shortening the migration distance and enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency. The best Pt/TiO 2 –Ti 3 C 2 composite demonstrates an impressive hydrogen precipitation efficiency of 767 μmol g −1 h −1 , surpassing TiO 2 and Pt/TiO 2 by factors of 12 times and 1.46 times, respectively. Furthermore, we developed a higher efficiency photocatalyst using the molten salt method to avoid the risks associated with conventional hydrofluoric acid etching. This research opens up new possibilities for the preparation of MXenes interface-modified catalysts, offering a valuable avenue for future exploration in the field.

In this work, multi-layer Ti 3 C 2 – carbon nanotubes – gold nanoparticles (Ti 3 C 2 -CNTs-Au) and cyclodextrin metal-organic framework – carbon nanotubes (CD-MOF-CNTs) have been prepared by in situ growth method and used to construct the ultra-sensitive rutin electrochemical sensor for the first time. Among them, the large number of metal active sites of Ti 3 C 2 , the high electron transfer efficiency of CNTS, and the good catalytic properties of AuNPs significantly enhance the electrochemical properties of the composite carbon nanomaterials. Interestingly, CD-MOF has a unique host–guest recognition and a large number of cavities, molecular gaps, and surface reactive groups, which gives the composite outstanding accumulation properties and selectivity for rutin. Under the optimized conditions, the constructed novel sensor has satisfactory detection performance for rutin in the range of 2 × 10 −9 to 8 × 10 −7 M with a limit of detection of 6.5 × 10 −10 M. In addition, the sensor exhibits amazing anti-interference performance against rutin in some flavonoid compounds and can be used to test natural plant samples (buckwheat, Cymbopogon distans , and flos sophorae immaturus). This work has promising applications in the field of environmental and food analysis, and exploring new directions for the application of Mxene-based composites.

Intracellular pH sensing is of importance and can be used as an indicator for monitoring the evolution of various diseases and the health of cells. Here, we developed a new class of surface-functionalized MXene quantum dots (QDs), Ti3C2, by the sonication cutting and hydrothermal approach and further explored their intracellular pH sensing. The functionalized Ti3C2 QDs exhibit bright excitation-dependent blue photoluminescence (PL) originating from the size effect and surface defects. Meanwhile, Ti3C2 QDs demonstrate a high PL response induced by the deprotonation of the surface defects. Furthermore, combining the highly pH sensitive Ti3C2 QDs with the pH insensitive [Ru(dpp)3]Cl2, we developed a ratiometric pH sensor to quantitatively monitor the intracellular pH values. These novel MXene quantum dots can serve as a promising platform for developing practical fluorescent nanosensors.

This paper reports the recovery and reuse of Pd ions from pharmaceutical wastewater using amino-modified Ti 3 C 2 . Ti 3 C 2 –NH 2 was synthesized by modifying (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane and the successful substitution of some surface functional groups of Ti 3 C 2 ; the decrease in material thickness was verified by characterization. This study revealed that the presence of amino groups significantly enhanced the Pd(II) adsorption capacity of Ti 3 C 2 . The effects of the adsorbent material, adsorbent dosage, pH, initial concentration of Pd ions, presence of competing cations, and contact time on the adsorption performance were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of 20 mg of Ti 3 C 2 –NH 2 was 986.65 mg/g in 100 ml of a Pd-ion solution with an initial concentration of 200 mg/l at pH 3. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted well with the experimentally obtained rate data, indicating that the main mode of Pd-ion removal by Ti 3 C 2 –NH 2 was via chemical reduction. Finally, the catalyst exhibited excellent performances during the photocatalytic and Suzuki coupling reactions with yields of 81 % and 95 %, respectively. The results demonstrated that Ti 3 C 2 –NH 2 is an excellent material for adsorbing Pd ions and can effectively recycle these ions from pharmaceutical wastewater.

2D MXene can prevent the penetration of corrosive media and can contribute to the improvement of corrosion resistance performance. However, achieving its uniform dispersion in the polymer matrix is challenging due to its large specific surface area and rapid aggregation. In this study, stable dispersion of polydopamine functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MXene (PDA-TM) hybrid in the waterborne epoxy (WEP) matrix was achieved via in-situ polymerization of the PDA layer on the surface of TM. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum of PDA-TM showed the blue shift of O-H bond at 3438 cm −1 and the Ti-O bond of TM at 612 cm −1 . The characteristic peak of PDA-TM in the XRD pattern appeared at 2θ = 3.9° and the PDA bulge became smaller. Both proved the successful synthesis of PDA and TM. The surface wrinkles of the PDA-TM of SEM became more pronounced, and the smooth surface became rougher. This was due to the in-situ polymerization of DA on the surface of TM, which was conducive to avoid tight stacking of TM and expand its interlayer spacing. In addition, The WEP nanocomposite coating showed high impact resistance, strong adhesion, flexibility, and wear resistance. Moreover, PDA-TM decreased the glass transition temperature of WEP from 128.0 to 95.4 °C and improved the reflection loss for electromagnetic wave absorption properties. Furthermore, the |Z| 0.01Hz value of the PDA-TM 0.5 % (6.072 × 10 5 Ω cm 2 ) coating was approximately 6 times higher compared to that of the WEP coating after 30-d immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The friction coefficient was also a quarter of neat WEP. This indicated that embedding a small amount of PDA functionalized TM nanosheets into WEP coating could improve obviously the corrosion resistance and wear resistance properties. The present research will provide a theoretical basis for the use of TM in the field of anticorrosion and electromagnetic wave absorption.

In this paper, we propose a composite nano-microstructure comprising Ti3C2 and nanogold as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active substrate for the highly sensitive sensing of amine gases. The adsorption performance of Ti3C2 was tested by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. Excellent adsorption ability of Ti3C2 was observed for aniline, phenylenediamine, and diethylamine, with adsorption amounts exceeding 2210, 1740, and 970 ng cm−2, respectively. The synergistic effect of the electromagnetic properties of Ti3C2 and nano-Au in the Ti3C2/nano-Au composite nanostructures was verified by finite-difference time-domain simulation. Partial chemical enhancement between Ti3C2 and aniline was verified by photocurrent tests. To achieve assay specificity, mercaptoacetaldehyde (MA) was adopted as a recognition probe. The Schiff base reaction between aldehyde groups and amino groups produces the –CN– bond, with the Raman characteristic peak at 1635 cm−1, enabling precise amine identification with the SERS chip. To obtain the Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensing chip, nano Au was deposited on an indium tin oxide substrate using the chronoamperometric method, followed by nano-Au aldolization modification through Au-SH interactions and the spin-coating of a Ti3C2 film layer. Due to the high affinity of Ti3C2 for amine molecules and the low SERS background signal of MA and Ti3C2, the SERS spectra could be used for ultra-sensitive detection of amines. Three amine gases, i.e. aniline, p-phenylenediamine, and diethylamine, were detected quantitatively using the intensity ratiometric method on the functionalized Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensor chip. The detection limits were 1, 1, and 20 parts per billion, respectively. By identifying the characteristic fingerprint peaks and comparing the relative intensity of the –CN– characteristic peak, quantitative analysis of the components of aniline and p-phenylenediamine mixed gas was accomplished. These findings demonstrate that the Ti3C2/nano-Au@MA SERS sensor chip offers a promising approach for the detection of amine gas molecules and holds potential for applications in environmental monitoring, disease diagnosis, and chemical analysis.
