Synergistic interface-pillared Fe-MOF on 2D Ti3C2TX MXene electrode coupling toward high energy density

Bingzhe Jia,Huailin Yang,Lei Wang,Zhiqi Zhao,Xinming Wu

Compared with most transition metal based electrode materials, 2D M n+1 X n T x has high conductivity and good solvent compatibility. However, its low energy density hinders its application as supercapacitior electrode for electrochemical energy storage applications. Herein, the interface-pillared of Fe-MOF (MIL-100(Fe)) onto Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layer, which provide rich electrochemical active sites, is achieved, and the MOF nanospheres with MXene nanosheets are subsequently converser into three dimensional multilayer porous nanostructures through the chemical bond couping. Therefore, the MOF nanospheres are anchored between the nansheets of MXene, enabling the fast ion transportation in the three dimensional nanostructures. Menanwhile, the MOF nanospheres prevent the aggregation of MXene nanosheets, and the laminar structure is maintained for more redox reaction sites within the hybrid electrodes through fast charge–discharge cycles. As a result, the MIL-100(Fe)/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene electrode displays superior energy density (85.53 Wh kg −1 ), which is much higher than the other MXene-based electrodes as far as we know. This design strategy of 2D hybrid electrodes opens up a new way for the commercial application of high perfermance supercapacitor.

Anti-biofouling Ti3C2TX MXene-holey graphene modified electrode for dopamine sensing in complex biological fluids

Lu Zhang,Chenxing Li,Yongqiang Yang,Jingxuan Han,Wenwei Huang,Jiayi Zhou,Yan Zhang

With the development of new methods for the medical diagnosis, electrochemical sensors have attracted increasing attention. However, biofouling on the surface of the sensor significantly decreases sensor performance, thereby limiting the application of electrochemical sensors in complex biological fluids. Given the urgent need for anti-biofouling electrodes, a sensor based on a glass carbon electrode (GCE) modified with Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene and electrochemically reduced holey graphene (ERHG) was fabricated and demonstrated to have excellent electrochemical performance and anti-biofouling properties. ERHG provides abundant surface-active sites and imparts stability by hindering the agglomeration and oxidation of MXene. Furthermore, the excellent conductivity and hydrophilicity of MXene result in a high electron transfer rate and strong hydrophilicity. The MXene-ERHG/GCE sensor can detect dopamine with a wide linear range (0.2–125 μM) and a low detection limit of 0.044 μM in phosphate-buffer saline solution. Importantly, the hydrophilicity of MXene-ERHG reduces non-specific protein adsorption on the electrode surface, providing resistance to biofouling. After immersion in bovine serum albumin for 30 min, MXene-ERHG/GCE retained 85.90% of its initial peak current value, much higher than that of ERHG/GCE (17.75%). The MXene-ERHG/GCE sensor also showed good sensitivity for dopamine detection in serum and artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) containing bovine serum albumin. Moreover, MXene-ERHG/GCE exhibited excellent reproducibility and long-term stability in aCSF. The results demonstrate that MXene-ERHG/GCE has excellent anti-biofouling performance, and shows potential as an electrode material for application in biosensing.

Self-assembled Ti3C2TX MXene/graphene composite for the electrochemical reduction and detection of p-nitrophenol

Xue Wang,Mengjia Li,Shuang Yang,Xuting Bai,Jiajia Shan

p -Nitrophenol ( p -NP) is an important phenolic environmental pollutant. The development of novel rapid determination methods for p -NP is of significance for environmental monitoring. In this work, a sensitive electrochemical sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene/graphene composite was developed to detect p -NP in aqueous samples. Firstly, delaminated titanium carbide (D-Ti 3 C 2 T X ) was successfully prepared via an optimized minimally intensive layer delamination (MILD) method, which was further followed by the self-assembly method to form D-Ti 3 C 2 T X /graphene (D-Ti 3 C 2 T X /GR) composite. The prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopic (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. Then the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified by D-Ti 3 C 2 T X /GR composite to prepare the D-Ti 3 C 2 T X /GR/GCE sensor. The electrochemical behavior of D-Ti 3 C 2 T X /GR/GCE was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronocoulometry. Furthermore, the proposed sensor showed a strong electrochemical response based on the p -NP reduction reaction, benefiting from abundant active sites, fast electron transfer, and excellent electro-catalytic performance of the D-Ti 3 C 2 T X /GR composite. Under the optimal conditions, the D-Ti 3 C 2 T X /GR based electrochemical sensor displayed a linear response in the p -NP concentration range from 1 to 175 μmol·L −1 with a detection limit of 0.16 μmol·L −1 . The anti-interference performance, reproducibility, stability, and recovery in real sample analysis were also further evaluated. This study provided a novel and sensitive method for the rapid determination of p -NP in environmental samples.

Atomically dispersed ultralow-platinum loading on Ti3C2Tx MXene as efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Xuan Jian,Mi-mi Zhang,Rui Li,Jian-xin Liu,Feng Fu,Zhen-hai Liang

The grand challenge in the development of Platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst is their high-cost, low utilization and less controllable, limiting its wide application in hydrogen economy field. Therefore, exploring a new technique to construct catalyst require minimal amounts of Pt and maintain high performance is very necessary. Herein, we first designed a high-efficiency electrocatalyst based ultralow Pt loading (1.27 μg cm ‒2 ) on two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene support by controlling Cu monolayer underpotential deposition (UPD), and then galvanic replacement Cu monolayer with Pt. Due to the energetically favorable metal-support interaction, in acidic media the as-prepared Pt-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mA cm ‒2 at low overpotential of 30 mV. Furthermore, the Pt-Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalyst also exhibited a superior HER activity with high turnover frequency (TOF) of 41.8 s ‒1 and mass activity of 41.3 A mg Pt –1 , which were about nearly 47 times those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst, respectively. This work demonstrate the potential of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as support for design of ultralow Pt loading electrocatalyst through Cu UPD-Galvanic replacement method that can be used for a wide range of catalytic reaction .

Highly efficient methylene blue removal by TMAOH delaminated Ti3C2Tx MXene suspension and the mechanistic aspect

Linshan Zhang,Deshun Huang,Pengxiang Zhao,Guozong Yue,Luming Yang,Weihua Dan

As a novel two-dimensional material, MXene is considered as a good candidate for pollutants removal. In this report, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets suspension was synthesized by intercalating and delaminating of the multi-layered Ti 3 C 2 T x using tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH). Given to its unique properties, it showed excellent performances on cationic methylene blue (MB) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was figured to be 1026 mg/g at 318 K, which is much higher than most absorbents reported in previous studies. Mechanistic studies revealed that electrostatic attraction and ion exchange are the main factors for MB removal. Additionally, the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets composite membrane was prepared and applied to the MB removal through filtration, which showed good removal efficiency and dye water flux. The current Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene suspension should be a promising absorbent for MB removal from water.

Surface-modified Ti3C2Tx MXene as anti-wear and extreme pressure additive for PFPE supramolecular gel

Jinglun Guo,Zhenling Shang,Yue Sun,Chenghao Li,Jianyi Xia,Yuxin Zou,Kang Du,Guoqiang Liu,Feng Zhou,Weimin Liu

Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricant is widely used in plenty of cutting-edge technologies because of its extraordinary properties. However, poor boundary lubrication and creep limit their further applications. Here, we demonstrated a PFPE supramolecular gel with surface-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x as additives for highly efficient boundary lubrication and prevention of creep. It turned into an oily liquid at 124.5 °C, accompanied by a rapid decrease in viscosity. Additionally, the phase transition could be achieved by shear stress. This kind of gel reduced wear volume by 90.75% compared with pure PFPE oil. Its friction coefficient (∼0.113) varied slightly with time. Notably, its load-bearing capacity exceeded 1500 N. This work puts forward an approach to the preparation of PFPE-based supramolecular gel lubricant with surface-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x additive.

Delamination of multilayer Ti3C2Tx MXene alters its adsorpiton and reduction of heavy metals in water

Yuxuan Zhang,Jun Luo,Biao Feng,Hongxia Xu,Yuanyuan Sun,Xueyuan Gu,Xin Hu,Mu Naushad,Bin Gao,Hongqiang Ren

MXenes are considered as an emerging class of two-dimensional (2D) adsorbent for various environmental applications. In this work, two different morphologies of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (multilayer (ML-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and delaminated titanium carbide (DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x )) were prepared through mild in situ HF etching and further delamination . The structural differences between the two were explored with a focus on their effects on the performance and mechanism of removing heavy metals from water. In comparison to ML-Ti 3 C 2 T x , DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x had more oxygen-containing functional groups, higher specific surface area (19.713 vs. 8.243 m 2 /g), larger pore volume (0.135 vs. 0.040 cm 3 /g), higher maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity (77.0 vs. 56.68 mg/g), but lower maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity (23.08 vs. 55.46 mg/g). Further investigation revealed that the removal of Pb(II) by the MXenes was mainly controlled through electrostatic attraction and surface complexation mechanisms, while Cu(II) was removed mainly through surface reduction by Ti-related groups. Because delamination of ML-Ti 3 C 2 T x increased the surface area and surface functional groups, DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x became a better sorbent for Pb(II) in water. During sonication, however, delamination inevitably led to partial oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and thus weakened the reducing ability of DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x for Cu(II) in water. Nevertheless, both ML- and DL-Ti 3 C 2 T x not only exhibited excellent heavy metal adsorption capacity under different solution conditions, but also showed good reusability. Findings of this study indicate that Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes are promising adsorbents for treating heavy metal pollutants in water.

Electrochemical behavior and anti-corrosion property of Ti3C2Tx MXene/LDH heterostructured coating on aluminum alloy

Wenhu Jia,Huaijie Cao,Tiange Wang,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu

Two-dimensional (2D) materials show potential applications in anti-corrosion on metals in aggressive medium. However, it remains a challenge in uniform dispersion, complex functionalization, and structure control of 2D nanosheets in composite coatings . Herein, a Ti 3 C 2 T x /layered double hydroxide (LDH) heterostructured coating for corrosion protection on Al alloy is proposed by in situ growth and dip coating process . Without complex functionalization, dispersion, and structure control, the heterostructured coating provides an enhanced corrosion resistance confirmed by electrochemical tests and microstructure characterization . As a result, the incorporation of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene can decrease the corrosion current density by ~40-fold and increase the coating resistance by 54-fold compared to bare Al alloy. Furthermore, the Ti 3 C 2 T x /LDH coating still exhibits a self-healing ability after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution over 3 days, thereby providing long-term corrosion protection on Al alloy for 30 days. The protective behavior is attributed to the blocking effect and the feature of participating in electrochemical corrosion reaction and losing electrons of 2D MXene prior to the metal. This strategy provides a facile and effective approach to designing 2D materials-based anticorrosion coatings on Al alloy used in aggressive environments.

Simultaneous detection of 4-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol using a Ti3C2Tx MXene based electrochemical sensor

Ling Lei,Caoling Li,Wensheng Huang,Kangbing Wu

Developing a sensitive and rapid detection method for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) is very important due to their high toxicity. In this work, bulk Ti3AlC2 powder was etched to Ti3C2Tx for the first time through a hydrothermal reaction in NaF/HCl solution. After ultrasonication in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), Ti3C2Tx powder was successfully exfoliated into multilayered Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (i.e. Ti3C2Tx MXene). The prepared Ti3C2Tx MXene not only has a large electrochemical surface area for the oxidation of 4-CP and 4-NP, but also lowers their electron transfer resistance. As a result, the oxidation signals of 4-CP and 4-NP are significantly improved on the surface of the Ti3C2Tx MXene. Based on the remarkable signal amplification of the Ti3C2Tx MXene, a sensitive and rapid method was developed for the simultaneous detection of 4-CP and 4-NP. The linear range is from 0.1 to 20.0 μM for 4-CP, and from 0.5 to 25.0 μM for 4-NP, with detection limits of 0.062 μM (4-CP) and 0.11 μM (4-NP). This method was used in wastewater samples, and the accuracy was confirmed to be good by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Amino acid-bonded Ti3C2Tx MXene nanofiltration membranes with superior antifouling property for enhanced water purification

Haiyu Luo,Nan Xu,Yanan Li,Junzhi Li,Wenlan Ji,Pei Nian,Zheng Wang,Yibin Wei

MXene nanosheets have been identified as promising building blocks for high-performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes in water purification . Herein, we report a series of amino acid-bonded Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membranes with enhanced NF performance and antifouling properties via glycine (Gly), l -glutamic acid (L-Glu), l -lysine (L-Lys) or l -cysteine (L-Cys) modification. The physicochemical properties, separation performances and anti-fouling behaviors of the pure Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane, Gly-, L-Glu-, L-Lys- and L-Cys-bonded Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membranes were comparatively investigated. The stable Ti–N bonds were found between the amino acids and the MXene nanosheets and different amino acids lead to different properties of the corresponding membranes. While maintaining ultra-high rejections to various organic dyes, all the amino acid functionalized membranes exhibited enhanced water permeability (7.17–13.11 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) compared with that of the pure MXene membrane. Importantly, the Gly-bonded membrane showed the optimal separation performance with high salt rejections of 86.28%, 81.36%, 72.88% and 66.82% to MgSO 4 , MgCl 2 , Na 2 SO 4 and NaCl, respectively, and the membrane also exhibited superior anti-fouling property with a flux recovery rate of 80.59% to bovine serum albumin (BSA). The separation mechanism was further revealed which may offer a simple yet efficient way for enhancing 2D MXene-based NF membranes.

Hollow Structure Co1–xS/3D-Ti3C2Tx MXene Composite for Separator Modification of Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Tianjiao Zhu,Dong Chen,Yangyang Mao,Yongan Cao,Wenju Wang,Yuqian Li,Hongfu Jiang,Shen Shen,Qunchao Liao

The commercial application of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries has faced obstacles, including challenges related to low sulfur utilization, structural degradation resulting from electrode volume expansion, and migration of polysulfide lithium (LiPSs). Herein, Co1–xS/3D-Ti3C2Tx composites with three-dimensional (3D) multilayered structures are used as separator modification materials for Li–S batteries to solve these problems. The multilevel layered structure of Co1–xS/3D-Ti3C2Tx establishes an efficient electron and Li+ transfer path, alleviates the volume change during the battery charge–discharge process, and enhances the stability of the structure. In addition, the battery assembled with the modified separator shows excellent discharge capacity and cycle stability at 0.5 C and could maintain a high discharge capacity after 500 cycles. This work provides a method for designing highly dispersed metal sulfide nanoparticles on MXenes and extends the application of MXenes-based composites in electrochemical energy storage.

Compressible, elastic and 3D porous Ti3C2Tx MXene/RGO/CNCs composite aerogel for electromagnetic wave absorbing

Lili Zhu,Yutong Cao,Bai Jiang,Junrong Yu,Jing Zhu,Zuming Hu

Incorporating compressibility , elasticity, and porous structures into microwave- absorbing materials will facilitate electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) and improve environmental adaptability for practical applications. Herein, a strategy to prepare Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/ cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) aerogels via a directed freezing method to design three-dimensional structures and strengthen the interaction between Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and RGO lamellae is demonstrated. Oriented structures and the addition of CNCs benefit structural stability while achieving superior absorption performance by forming perfect impedance matching and multiple polarization effects. Interestingly, the prepared MXene/RGO/CNCs (MRC-20) aerogel delivers the prominent EMA performance in reported MXene-based absorbing materials, with a minimal reflection loss (RL min ) of − 72.32 dB at 12.0 GHz corresponding to a matching thickness of 2.56 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.96 GHz at 1.88 mm with an RL min of − 59.87 GHz. Furthermore, by tuning the content of CNCs, the MRC-20 aerogel exhibits the highest stress (37.2 kPa) at 70% compressive strain and demonstrates the stability of the compression cycle. These intriguing features make the hybrid aerogel stand out among numerous absorbers.
