In cold environments, the driving range of electric vehicles is significantly reduced due to the high energy consumption of active de-icing systems. As a result, enhancing the passive de-icing capability of car windshields has become a focal point in both academic and industrial research in recent years. Compared to other application, deicing for car windshields requires higher standards for transparency, durability, and universality. In this work, a UV-curable, transparent superhydrophobic coating based on polyurethane was developed, aimed at anti-icing and self-cleaning applications for automotive windshields. This coating, with its active anti-icing capability, reduces the adhesion of water and ice to the glass surface, significantly lowering the energy consumption for de-icing at start-up, improving de-icing efficiency. By integrating a spray-coating method with SiO2 particles, the coating achieves a balance between high transparency and excellent hydrophobicity. The experimental results show that when the concentration of SiO2 was 1.5 wt%, the coating exhibits a contact angle of 165°, over 82 % maximum light transmittance, and an extended ice delay time by 12 times compared to pristine glass. The ice adhesion force is reduced by 15 times as well. Additionally, the coating demonstrates excellent abrasion resistance and impact resistance to water droplets, maintaining its superhydrophobic state after 102,600 water drop impacts. This coating, with its active de-icing capability, significantly reduces the de-icing energy consumption of electric vehicles during startup by minimizing the adhesion of water droplets and ice layers on the glass surface, thereby enhancing de-icing efficiency in cold climates and extending the driving range.

Double-base (DB) propellants, renowned for their superior performance and cost-effectiveness, are extensively utilized in both rocketry and artillery applications. During the 3D printing process of double-base propellants, auxiliary solvents play a crucial role in plasticizing the DB propellant mixtures. Consequently, the printed propellants are prone to significant shrinkage and dimensional instability as a result of solvent evaporation post-printing. To address these challenges, we have innovated a UV-assisted material extrusion 3D printing technique that preserves the intended geometries of the DB propellant. The results of our printing trials indicate that incorporating an energetic UV-curable resin as a modifier into the DB propellant paste is highly effective. Ultimately, we successfully fabricated a porous propellant cylinder featuring a periodic woodpile structure. Additionally, the internal structure, mechanical properties, combustion characteristics, and in-barrel ballistic performance of the printed propellants have been thoroughly characterized. Our findings underscore that the UV-assisted material extrusion additive manufacturing process confers exceptional properties to the DB propellant.

UV water-based inks have disadvantages such as slow curing speed and low degree of crosslinking. In this paper, the copolymer P(MMA-r-HEMA) was prepared by traditional free radical polymerization using methyl methacrylate (MMA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as monomers, and the copolymer P(MMA-r-HEMA) was modified by acrylic acid (AA) to synthesis completely water-soluble acrylic prepolymer P(MMA-r-HEMA)-g-AA. Triethylenetetramine reacted with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to yield a multifunctional reactive diluent TGMA. Secondly, acrylic prepolymer P(MMA-r-HEMA)-g-AA, multifunctional reactive diluent TGMA and photoinitiator were used to prepare water-based UV curable ink. The influence of the type and quality of photoinitiator, the relative molecular weight and mass fraction of P(MMA-r-HEMA)-g-AA, the number of functional groups and mass fraction of TGMA on the UV ink curing speed and the wear resistance of the ink film were discussed. When the mass fraction of the photoinitiator TPO was 1%, the number-average relative molecular mass of the prepolymer was 1.67 × 104 g/mol and the mass fraction was 60%, the number of functional groups of the reactive diluent was 6 and the mass fraction was 40%, the light curing of UV water-based ink was completed in 0.1 s, and the mass loss after 50 times abrasion was 0.2–0.4%.

Conventional lignin, a dehydrogenated polymer derived primarily from hydroxycinnamic alcohol monomers, exhibits relatively low antioxidant and ultraviolet (UV)-blocking activities due to its structural imperfection. Herein, we demonstrated that the dehydrogenated polymer of ferulic acid (an unconventional lignin precursor) (FAL) had excellent antioxidant and UV-blocking properties. Structural characterization showed that FAL contains abundant dihydrobenzofuran and butyrolactone structures, free phenolic hydroxyl groups, and cinnamic acid end groups. Such structural characteristics endow FAL with much higher antioxidant activity and broader and stronger UV absorptivity (especially UVA) than conventional lignins. Our investigation showed that FAL could significantly improve the UV-blocking property of commercial SPF30 and SPF50 and render a relatively light color. These versatile properties make the FAL a potential ingredient for application in sunscreen products. This work is enlightening not only for exploring better antioxidant and UV-blocking polymers from the dehydrogenated polymers of phenolic compounds but also for biosynthesizing more advantageous lignin in plants.

A series of CO 2 -based UV cured polyurethane acrylate with good flexibility and mechanical strength were prepared using polycarbonate diol (PECD), diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), and tetrahydrofuran acrylate (THFA) as raw materials. Simultaneously compared with traditional polyester (PCLD)-based and polyether (PPG)-based UV cured polyurethane acrylates. By analyzing the infrared spectra of prepolymer and PECD-PUA, the generation of characteristic absorption peaks indicates the successful synthesis of PECD-PUA. In addition, compared with the uncured film, the carbon carbon double bond absorption peak (810 cm -1 ) of the cured film disappeared, indicating that the double bond had undergone a reaction. The mechanical properties, hardness, water contact angle, and solvent absorption properties of UV-cured polyurethane were studied. The results show that the CO 2 -based material PECD has excellent properties, the tensile strength can reach 9.83 MPa, and the elongation of break reach 82.92% and the cured UV-PECD-PU film has high hardness (pencil hardness: HB) All cured films exhibited excellent thermal stability (more than 250 ℃) through TGA analysis. This paper synthesized environmentally friendly CO 2 -based photopolymerization polyurethane, providing direction for the resource utilization of carbon dioxide-based materials.

2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic (2,4-D) acid and 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA), as widely utilized organochlorine pesticides , are normally detected in wastewater and atmosphere. Their harmfulness to the ecosystem cannot be ignored. UV/H 2 O 2 is one of the most conventional advanced oxidation processes, which has remarkable advantages for the removal of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater. However, the reaction mechanisms and pathways of pollutants with reactive radicals are still unclear. In this study, the degradation efficacy and mechanisms during the photodegradation of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in UV/H 2 O 2 processes were investigated by experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that 2,4-D was more likely to be degraded by UV/H 2 O 2 treatment than UV photolysis alone. In contrast, 4-CPA can be degraded effectively and rapidly under UV irradiation alone. By LC-MS analysis, the degradation products of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in the UV/H 2 O 2 processes were identified and they were produced by hydroxylation and photolysis. Therefore, we speculated a competition mechanism presented between direct photolysis and indirect photolysis in the UV/H 2 O 2 degradation of 2,4-D and 4-CPA. The OH-initiated reaction mechanisms of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in aqueous environments were investigated using quantum chemical methods SMD/M06–2X/6–311++G (3df, 2p)//SMD/M06–2X/6-311 + G (d,p). The pH dependence of the reaction mechanisms and rate constants in their degradation process induced by ·OH was also investigated. The calculation results showed that the ionic forms (2,4-D - and 4-CPA - ) were more prone to react with ·OH in comparison to the corresponding molecular forms (2,4-D and 4-CPA). The total rate constants of 2,4-D and 4-CPA with OH increased with the pH from 1 to 10, and decreased with continued pH increase. The toxicities of 2,4-D, 4-CPA and their products were assessed by the QSAR-based toxicity evaluation software. The results showed that several products were more toxic than their parent compounds, such as 2,4-dichlorophenol, 3,5-dichlorocatechol, 4-chlorophenol and hydroquinone . This work can contribute to clarifying the environmental risks of 2,4-D and 4-CPA and offer a complete understanding for the photodegradation behavior of 2,4-D and 4-CPA in aqueous ecosystems.

A series of nonhalogen UV-curable polyurethane acrylates (PUA) were synthesized using polyethylene carbonate diol (PECD), isophorone diisocyanate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, a reactive phosphorus-containing acrylate, and pentaerythritol triacrylate. The flame retardancy, mechanical properties, hardness, abrasion resistance, and solvent absorption of the PECD-based UV-cured polyurethane were systematically studied and compared to polyester and polyether-based analogues. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed successful PECD-PUA synthesis. Results demonstrate the PECD confers superior flame retardancy compared to conventional petroleum-based materials, achieving a limiting oxygen index of 28.2% and UL-94 5VB rating, alongside excellent comprehensive performance: tensile strength of 15.56 MPa, pencil hardness of 6H, abrasion loss of 0.52%, and strong adhesion (Grade 3). This work presents a green strategy for synthesizing high-performance, environmentally friendly polyurethanes, reducing reliance on petroleum resources. Graphical This study successfully synthesized halogen-free UV cured CO 2 -polyurethane acrylate (PUA) using PECD, IPDI, HEA, and phosphorus containing acrylate, and compared it with polyester and polyether polyurethane acrylate. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful synthesis of PECD-PUA. Results demonstrate that PECD-based polyurethane exhibits exceptional flame retardancy, thermal stability, mechanical performance, and coating properties. In summary, PECD-based halogen-free UV-curable flame-retardant polyurethane demonstrates outstanding multifunctional properties, positioning it as a promising candidate for eco-friendly, high-performance polymer.

In this work, UV and UV/chlorine (UV/Cl) were employed to enhance powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption pretreatment prior to ultrafiltration process for algae-contaminated surface water treatment . Their performance on membrane fouling mitigation and organic pollutant rejection was systematically evaluated. A comparative experiment was conducted under varying pollution degrees of algal extracellular organic matter (EOM) contamination in surface river water. The results indicated that UV/PAC and UV/Cl/PAC pretreatment effectively enhanced the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV-absorbing at 254 nm (UV 254 ). The characteristics of feed water after pretreatments were investigated through apparent molecular-weight (MW) distribution and fluorescence parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). In regard to membrane fouling mitigation, UV/Cl/PAC noticeably decreased reversible and irreversible fouling resistance simultaneously and UV/PAC preferred reducing reversible membrane fouling. Combined fouling modeling was operated to scrutinize the fouling mitigation mechanisms and standard pore blocking was proved to be dominant during the filtration process. Moreover, the UV/Cl and UV/Cl/PAC pretreatments were proved positive for emerging micropollutants degradation and disinfection by-products formation potential reduction. The results suggested that UV and UV/Cl are likely strategies to enhance the efficiency of PAC adsorption pretreatments prior to ultrafiltration during algae-contaminated water treatment.

In this paper, a kind of novel fully UV absorbing carbon dots (R-CDs) were prepared as UV absorbers by a one-step hydrothermal method using natural renewable rutin as raw material. R-CDs can achieve multifunctional applications under acid-base amphoteric conditions. Under acidic conditions, R-CDs have high absorption efficiency (over 98%) in the whole ultraviolet region (200–400 nm) which have wider UV absorption range than commercial water-soluble organic UV absorbers (BP-4) and are almost completely transmitted in the visible light region. The UV absorption mechanism of R-CDs be investigated to the UV absorption systems of degradable cellulose coating (CMC) and the R-CDs@CMC coating was applied to prevent UV leakage of the 395UV chip. Under alkaline conditions, R-CDs remain fully UV absorbing and good absorption stability, but BP-4 loses its function as a UV absorber. Finally, R-CDs was applied to the UV absorption and anti-blue light systems of PU . The R-CDs@PU are more effective than commercially available anti-blue light lenses. At present, the preparation process of R-CDs is simple and rutin is a natural renewable energy source. So, R-CDs have the potential to become a new generation of water-soluble UV absorbers and be applied to prevent blue light.

Free amino acids (AAs) can form trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetonitriles (HANs) during chlorination in drinking water treatment plants, but they account for a small fraction of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) pool in natural waters. In contrast, combined AAs contribute to a greater identifiable DON portion, but the information on the formation and control of THMs and HANs from them is limited. Ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ) and ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS), two typical UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs), are both promising drinking water technologies for the reduction of trace organic contaminants . The objective of this study is to examine the effects of the two UV-AOP pre-treatments on the formation of carbonaceous and nitrogenous disinfection by-products (C- and N-DBPs), which were indicated by THMs and HANs, respectively, during post-chlorination and chloramination of tyrosine (Tyr) in free and combined forms. Results showed that direct UV photolysis, PS pre-oxidation alone or H 2 O 2 pre-oxidation alone did not significantly impact the THM and HAN formation during subsequent chlorination. However, the two UV-AOP pre-treatments could somewhat alter the DBP formation. In general, under the identical doses (UV irradiation dose and molar oxidant dose), UV/PS pre-treatment better controlled the HANs than UV/H 2 O 2 during AA post-chlorination, though UV/PS might slightly promote the formation of chloroform . In contrast, the two UV-AOP pre-treatments did not obviously affect the THM and HAN formation when post-chloramination was applied. In addition, a marked difference was observed in the speciation of DBPs formed from free AAs and short oligopeptides in the presence of bromide. For free Tyr, more brominated THMs were formed than brominated HANs; but for short oligopeptides, more bromine was incorporated into HANs than THMs.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is widely used as an excellent UV absorbent to improve UV-shielding ability. However, its photocatalytic activity is high, and the UV absorption region and dispersibility within the polymer are poor, which limits the application. This work is based on the design of ZnO nanoparticles via the coating of hydroxyapatite (HA) and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (KH550), then it is compounded with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTE), and UV spectrophotometer are used to analyze the microstructure and properties. The results show that the composite films have good UV-shielding abilities and help reduce the damage of PVC upon exposure or heat. Therefore, this work provides new means to make PVC composites with superior UV-shielding properties, and the tensile strength at the break of PVC film blended with ZnO@HA/KH550 is effectively improved, which is due to good compatibility between ZnO@HA/KH550 and PVC matrix.

Photodetectors (PDs) that combine inorganic semiconductors with organic lead halide perovskites to produce broader spectral responses have captured great interest from researchers; however, the imperfect perovskite crystallinity and the defects on the film surface are still the main factors inhibiting the PD's capability. Here, we proposed a simple method by introducing ionic liquid [1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (BMII)] into ZnO/CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 to encourage the growth of perovskite grains, raise the crystallinity of perovskite, and reduce the trap states, finally enhancing the photoelectric performances. After the addition of BMII, there are 171-fold, 74-fold, and 76-fold increases, respectively, in the light–dark current ratio, the spectral responsivity, and the external quantum efficiency, meanwhile, detectivity can reach 2.58 × 10 13 Jones in the UV–vis range. The impressive results can be owed to the higher carrier concentration of ZnO/CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 with BMII, which can facilitate the charge transfer and suppress the recombination of photogenerated carriers. This study may be of assistance to extend our knowledge of developing high-performance PDs.
