The chiral Schiff base N -(2-hydroxy-1-naphthyl)methylidene-( S )-α-phenylethylamine ( 1 ) was designed and synthesized as a fluorescent chemosensor based on the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and C N isomerization mechanisms. The receptor exhibited a highly selective switch-on fluorescence response toward Zn 2+ and especially avoided the interference of Cd 2+ when the detection was conducted in unbuffered methanol solution. Furthermore, the in situ generated 1 ·Zn II -complex could be employed for the specific recognition of H 2 PO 4 − by fluorescence turn-off signaling through a ligand displacement process.

In this article, we synthesized a series of new warm-white emitting persistent luminescent phosphors by co-doping Zn2+ into Pr3+ activated BaLu2Al2Ga2SiO12, and systematically investigated the effect of Zn2+ co-doping on both their photoluminescence and persistent luminescence properties. Following the removal of UV excitation, the phosphor emits warm-white persistent luminescence consisting of greenish-blue and red emissions originating from 3P0 and 1D2 multiplet electron transitions at the 4f level of Pr3+. The luminescence properties of the Ba1−xZnxLu2Al2Ga2SiO12:Pr3+ phosphors can be modified by changing the content of Ba/Zn in the host, which affects the non-radiative energy flow between 5d1–3P0–1D2 levels and resultantly enhances the intensity of the 4f → 4f transition. Compared with the undoped sample, Zn2+ co-doping can significantly enhance the persistent luminescence intensity of the phosphors in the range of 400–800 nm and reduce the intensity in the UV region. Meanwhile, Zn2+ co-doping can also change the intensity ratio between the greenish-blue and red emissions, and the persistent luminescence color can be tuned from red to warm-white with the increase of Zn2+ concentration. Besides, the Zn2+ ions entering the crystal lattice also enhance the persistent luminescence performance by modifying the defect levels in the phosphor. For the optimized phosphor, bright warm-white persistent luminescence can be observed by the naked eye in the dark after the removal of the excitation source for 4 h. Based on the experimental results, a feasible mechanism was also proposed to reveal the persistent luminescence generation process for the BaLu2Al2Ga2SiO12:Pr3+,Zn2+ phosphor.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising for energy storage due to their high safety, but Zn 2+ distribution characters in cathodes remains poorly understood. In this study, we comprehensively map the overall Zn 2+ distribution profiles and reveal localized nonuniform distribution characteristics in a representative α-MnO 2 cathode. Two striking features of the nonuniform distribution are identified: the ‘bottom effect’ characterized by substantially higher Zn concentration at the electrode bottom, and ‘inactive areas’ where Zn concentration is extremely low. The bottom effect occurs only under specific initial electrode capacity and nonuniform discharging current-density distribution. Inactive areas are distinguished by the absence of Zn 4 (SO 4 ) (OH) 6 ·xH 2 O (ZSH) nanosheets on the surface, which probably results from poor wettability with the aqueous electrolyte due to lack of hydrophilic α-MnO 2 . This conceptual framework offers new insights for developing strategies to mitigate these issues and enhance electrode performance.

The combination of DNA nanotechnology and nanopore sensing technology has greatly promoted research on target molecule or ion detection. The large solid-state nanopores/nanochannels show better mechanical stability and reproducibility, but metal ion detection in the large nanopores with diameters of hundreds of nanometers or several micrometers is rarely reported. Hence, it is meaningful and urgent to develop a large nanopore-based sensing platform for the detection of metal ions. Herein, we employed a salicylic aldehyde-modified DNA network in conjunction with a glass nanopipette (GN) with a diameter of hundreds of nanometers as a sensing platform for the detection of target metal ions. Upon the addition of different receptors with the amino group, the salicylic aldehyde could in situ specifically recognize and bind with Zn2+ and Al3, forming Schiff base-metal ion complexes at the four vertices of one face per nanocube unit. The steric hindrance effect of multiple Schiff bases and metal ion complexes leads to the blockage of internal structure and decrease of ion current in the GN. Owing to this signal amplification strategy, the detection limit of the target metal ion reaches a level of fM in the GN with a diameter of about 300 nm. In the future, this functional nanopore sensing platform is expected to realize highly sensitive detection for more biological metal ions by choosing appropriate receptors.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a biomimetic biomaterial that has been widely used in bone repair for many years. However, the increased risk of infection after surgery and long-time tracing for the material distribution and degradation during bone reconstruction remain challenges in the clinic. Zinc (Zn) is considered as an indispensable microelement for humans and is characterized with antibacterial action and osteogenic activity. Terbium (Tb), a rare-earth element, emits stable fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Here, Tb3+/Zn2+ co-doped hydroxyapatite (HA:Tb/Zn) was prepared to synchronously realize the antibacterial effect, osteogenic activity, and long-time tracing property. We found that HA:Tb/Zn had a strong antibacterial effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative clinical infectious bacteria, as well as improved osteogenic activity. HA:Tb/Zn also displayed stable green fluorescence in vitro and in vivo, which indicated great potential for recognizing the material changes during the bone reconstruction process. The combination of the ternary functions is of great significance to control the overuse of antibiotics and realize long-time tracing, and provide a versatile design on biomaterials in bone repair.

Nowadays, electromagnetic radiation significantly impacts the normal operation of electronic devices and poses risks to human health. To effectively address this problem, the development of composites that exhibit exceptional electrochemical wave absorption through the combination of different components holds great promise. In this study, we have successfully prepared 1D Ni nanochains@Zn 2+ doping polypyrrole/reduced graphene oxide (Ni NCs@Z-P/RGO, denoted as R-x) composites using a combination of hydrothermal, solvothermal, in situ polymerization, and physical blending methods. Notably, the R-2 composite demonstrates a remarkable minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −63.58 dB at 14.3 GHz, with a thickness of 1.61 mm. Furthermore, the R-2 composite exhibits an impressive effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.08 GHz (11.92 GHz-17 GHz) at a thickness of 1.67 mm. These outstanding performances can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the different components and a well-thought-out structural design. Moreover, to showcase the practical applicability of the material, we have conducted additional investigations on the reduction of the radar cross-sectional area (RCS). The results strongly demonstrate that the prepared composite material, when used as a coating, effectively reduces the RCS value by up to 26.6 dB m 2 for R-2 at θ = 0°. The experimental methods and simulations presented in this study hold significant potential for application in wave absorption research and practical implementations. Additionally, the prepared Ni NCs@Z-P/RGO composites demonstrate feasibility as wave-absorbing materials for future utilization.

Zinc oxide (ZnO), which is toxic to aquatic organisms, is widely used as an activator in the rubber industry. The reduction of ZnO content is one of the efficient ways to tackle ecological environment impacts induced by ZnO. However, the incompatibility between Zn2+and organic matrix inhibits the solubility and activity of Zn2+in the organic matrix, causing the heavy use of ZnO. This work develops a phase transfer agent with Zn2+-philic structure and oleophilic structure to increase the solubility of Zn2+in the organic matrix. The phase transfer agent and Zn2+form coordination interactions, while the hydrophobic chains of phase transfer agent and organic matrix form hydrophobic interactions. The above two interactions improve the solubility and activity of Zn2+in the organic matrix, contributing to the formation of crosslinking network. Through the phase transfer agent strategy, we obtain the mechanically robust elastomers, and the samples with low ZnO content still maintain the superior properties. This work provides an efficient way to reduce ZnO content without sacrificing the performance of elastomers. Keywords:elastomers;phase transfer agent;crosslinking process;ZnO content;mechanical properties

Transition metal ions such as Ag + , Cu 2+ , and Zn 2+ are utilized as sterile agents thousands of years ago. Unfortunately, these metal ions in the form of traditional metal or metal oxide nanoparticles cannot be directly medicated into human body due to the potential toxicity. Herein, novel Zn 2+ –ε-poly( l -lysine) (EPL)–protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA)-based hybrid nanoparticles (ZEP NPs) with on-demand release capability are synthesized for the first time by one-step coordination self-assembly of Zn 2+ , EPL, and PCA to address this issue. The ZEP NPs can effectively adhere on bacterial cells and release Zn 2+ in situ due to the decomposition of ZEP NPs in acidic infection microenvironment. More importantly, ZEP NPs exhibit excellent bactericidal ability in a protein-rich environment, in which free Zn 2+ completely loses its bactericidal ability. The excellent bactericidal effect of ZEP NPs is confirmed in a skin infection model and a lung infection model, demonstrating the great potential to deal with internal infections. Meanwhile, ZEP NPs exhibit negligible toxicity since the dose of Zn 2+ can be significantly reduced compared to the commercial zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The outstanding bactericidal ability as well as negligible toxicity of ZEP NPs makes it ideal candidate of next generation antibacterial agents in treating internal infections.

Graphical We have synthesized a dual-emissive colorimetric fluorescent glutathione carbon dot (GSH-CDs) probe that can be used to detect Zn 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Cu 2+ separately or simultaneously by observing the change in fluorescence color and referring to the truth table. Because the probe has low cytotoxicity, it can be used in cell imaging. Dual-emissive fluorescent glutathione carbon dots (GSH-CDs) have been synthesized by a green hydrothermal method and used as a colorimetric fluorescent probe for the multi-detection of Zn 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Cu 2+ individually or simultaneously. The GSH-CDs exhibit dual fluorescence emission at 460 and 683 nm, which results in cyan fluorescence emission under UV light. The dual-emissive GSH-CDs can be used as a multifunctional colorimetric fluorescent nanoprobe for precise and quantitative detection of Zn 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Cu 2+ through a change in the color of the fluorescence. Upon interaction with Zn 2+ , the fluorescent color of the GSH-CDs was transformed from cyan to pink. When exposed to Mn 2+ or Cu 2+ , the fluorescence color was transformed from cyan to blue. When the three ions were present simultaneously, the cyan fluorescence emission changed to a nattier blue. The minimum limits of detection (LODs) for Zn 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Cu 2+ were calculated to be 9.64, 3.24, and 1.7 n m , respectively. As far as we know, this is the first report of the use of dual-emissive carbon dots for the multi-detection of heavy-metal ions. Moreover, the multi-detection of Zn 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Cu 2+ in real environmental water by GSH-CDs was also investigated. In addition the GSH-CDs can be applied in cell imaging.

Chiral metal–organic frameworks, an emerging type of chiral porous materials, possess many outstanding characteristics such as high surface area, tunable pore sizes, and good chemical stability. Herein, we prepared a chiral [Zn 2 (D-Cam) 2 (4,4′-bpy)] n @SiO 2 core–shell composite on the SiO 2 -NH 2 microspheres by an in-situ growth method. The prepared [Zn 2 (D-Cam) 2 (4,4′-bpy)] n @SiO 2 -packed column exhibited high-resolution separation of racemic compounds and positional isomers at a low column backpressure (9–12 bar). Twelve pairs of enantiomers including alcohols, amines, epoxides, ketones, and esters were well resolved with sharp peak shapes on the [Zn 2 (D-Cam) 2 (4,4́-bpy)] n @SiO 2 chromatographic column. Compared the separation performance of [Zn 2 (D-Cam) 2 (4,4́-bpy)] n @SiO 2 -packed column and two chromatographic columns (commercial Chiralpak AD-H column and as-prepared SiO 2 -NH 2 column), the [Zn 2 (D-Cam) 2 (4,4′-bpy)] n -packed column and the commercial Chiralpak AD-H column have a good complementarity in chiral separation, and it also offered better separation performance compared to the SiO 2 -NH 2 column for separating positional isomers. The effects of column temperature and analyte mass on the HPLC separation were investigated. Additionally, the [Zn 2 (D-Cam) 2 (4,4́-bpy)] n @SiO 2 packed column has good repeatability and stability for HPLC separation of enantiomers and positional isomers. The relatvive standard deviations (RSDs) for repeated separations of 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(9-anthryl)ethanol and o , m , p -bromoaniline were less than 0.8 % and 1.2 % for the retention time and peak area, respectively. After continuous use for one month, the RSDs for the retention time and peak area of them were in the range of 1.1–1.3 % and 1.5–1.8 % (inter-day and intra-day, n = 5), respectively. This work also indicates that the chiral MOFs@SiO 2 composites are promising for HPLC separation.

Fe 3+ and Zn 2+ ions were doped into the lattice of CeO 2 via the hydrothermal method . The microstructure and spectra features were analyzed systemically. XRD results show that the solid solubility of Fe 3+ and Zn 2+ ions in Ce 1– x (Fe 0.5 Zn 0.5 ) x O 2 can be identified as x = 0.16. The cell volumes are decreased by increasing the doped content. The TEM graphs prove that the grain size of the sample is about 10 nm, and the EDS result indicates that the doped contents are in accordance with that of the theory concentrations. Meanwhile, the doping also causes the increasing concentrations of the defects and oxygen vacancies which are supported by the XPS , Raman, UV and PL characterizations. The samples exhibit better catalytic activities for improving the hydrogen storage properties and the electrochemical kinetics of the ball milled Mg 2 Ni based composites. Further, the catalysis effects are improved by increasing the doped contents, which can be ascribed to the increasing contents of the oxygen vacancies, defects, the special electron transition states and the nature of the doped ions in CeO 2 -based solid solutions.
