Improved visible-light photocurrent based on ZnO/ZnS core–shell nanorods via interfacial engineering

Weiwei Xia,Lingzhi Guan,Xianghua Zeng,Jinpeng Yang,Hui He,Yunqing Cao

Vertically aligned quasi two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanorods (NRs) on carbon fiber paper were prepared by a modified hydrothermal approach, an individual ZnO nanorod has a diameter of 100–200 nm and a length of ~1 µm. ZnO/ZnS core-hell hierarchal structures with an outer ZnS shell of ~25 nm were fabricated under an elaborate sulfidation treatment. Compared to ZnO NRs a depressed near band emission at 380 nm and a significant enhanced visible light emission around 500 nm were observed for the ZnO/ZnS core-hell NRs from photoluminescence spectra. XPS and ESR measurements were carried out to study the ions constituents and the defects of the prepared samples. The prepared samples were used as photoelectrodes in visible-light self-powered photoelectrochemical cell-type detector. And an enhanced photocurrent of 6.79 µA was obtained, which is ten times as high as that of the bare ZnO electrode. The results show that the existence of sulfur vacancies and the formation of ZnO/ZnS heterostructure were able to promote photocurrent performance, the former increases the carrier concentration and leads to an upshift of work function; the latter makes the band bend and the photogenerated e–p pairs can be separated efficiently. The results will be helpful to implement visible-light device based on heterostructure via interfacial engineering.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline antibiotics by reduced graphene oxide–CdS/ZnS heterostructure photocatalysts

Yanfeng Tang,Xinlin Liu,Changchang Ma,Mingjun Zhou,Pengwei Huo,Longbao Yu,Jianming Pan,Weidong Shi,Yongsheng Yan

In this work, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)–CdS/ZnS heterostructure composites have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method by assembling the CdS/ZnS heterostructure nanoparticles on RGO sheets and the reduction of GO occurs simultaneously. The as-prepared RGO–CdS/ZnS composites with the content of 15% RGO exhibit highly active photodegradation of TC. A possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity has been discussed. The CdS/ZnS heterostructure facilitates the transformation of electrons, which is excited by light irradiation in the conduction band of CdS. RGO is supposed to be an electron transfer channel, which is used to reduce the recombination of electron–hole pairs, thus enhancing the photo-conversion efficiency. By profiting from the synergy of RGO and CdS/ZnS heterostructure, the photocatalysts not only show a better photocatalytic activity in tetracycline antibiotics but also prevent pure CdS or ZnS from photocorrosion. At last, RGO–CdS/ZnS shows remarkable stability and cyclic performances.

Pseudo-bi-enzyme glucose sensor: ZnS hollow spheres and glucose oxidase concerted catalysis glucose

Ying Shuai,Changhua Liu,Jia Wang,Xiaoyan Cui,Ling Nie

This work creatively uses peroxidase-like ZnS hollow spheres (ZnS HSs) to cooperate with glucose oxidase (GOx) for glucose determinations. This approach is that the ZnS HSs electrocatalytically oxidate the enzymatically generated H2O2 to O2, and then the O2 circularly participates in the previous glucose oxidation by glucose oxidase. Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used as electron transfer and enzyme immobilization matrices, respectively. The biosensor of glucose oxidase–carbon nanotubes–Au nanoparticles–ZnS hollow spheres–gold electrode (GOx–CNT–AuNPs–ZnS HSs–GE) exhibits a rapid response, a low detection limit (10 μM), a wide linear range (20 μM to 7 mM) as well as good anti-interference, long-term longevity and reproducibility.

Thioglycolic acid-capped CuInS2/ZnS quantum dots as fluorescent probe for cobalt ion detection

Lili Zi,Yu Huang,Zhengyu Yan,Shenghua Liao

A novel sensing fluorescent probe based on the fluorescence quenching of the thioglycolic acid-capped CuInS 2 /ZnS quantum dots (CuInS 2 /ZnS/TGA QDs) was established for cobalt ions detection. The fluorescence quenching of CuInS 2 /ZnS/TGA QDs was due to the increasing surface deficiency and the inner-filter effect, which were attributed to the reaction between Co 2+ and sulfur bonds on the surface of QDs. The quenching curve could be fitted by a typical Stern–Volmer-type equation, with a linear relationship between the quenching efficiency and the concentration of cobalt ions in the range of 0.3012–90.36   μmol   L −1 . And the detection limit (S/N=3) for Co 2+ was 0.16   μmol   L −1 . Therefore, the established probe provided a simple, rapid, cheap and sensitive method for Co 2+ detection. In a word, this method can be used to detect Co 2+ in the environment.

Ultraeffective ZnS Nanocrystals Sorbent for Mercury(II) Removal Based on Size-Dependent Cation Exchange

Zan Qu,Lili Yan,Liang Li,Jianfang Xu,Mingming Liu,Zhichun Li,Naiqiang Yan

We report a novel nanocrystals (NCs) sorbent, which shows an extraordinary adsorption capacity to aqueous Hg2+ based on cation exchange and allows for the utmost removal of mercury from water. The NCs sorbent was synthesized by direct coating ZnS NCs on the surface of the α-Al2O3 nanoparticles. The as-prepared ZnS NCs sorbent can efficiently remove over 99.9% Hg2+ in 1 min, and lower the Hg2+ concentration from 297.5 mg/L (ppm) to below 1.0 μg/L (ppb) within 5 min. The saturated adsorption capacity of ZnS NCs for Hg2+ is about 2000 mg/g, which is close to the theoretic saturated adsorption capacity. The mechanism of Hg2+ removal by ZnS NCs sorbent, the influences of pH value and other cations on Hg2+ removal were investigated, respectively. Meanwhile, it is found the size-dependent cation exchange plays a critical role in the removal of Hg2+ by ZnS NCs. Small size ZnS NCs shows better performance than the big size ZnS NCs in the adsorption capacity and adsorption rate for Hg2+. Furthermore, the mercury adsorbed by the ZnS NCs sorbent is readily recycled by extraction with aqueous sodium sulfide.

Warm White Light Emitting Diodes with Gelatin-Coated AgInS2/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dots

Xiaojiao Kang,Yanchun Yang,Lan Wang,Song Wei,Daocheng Pan

Cadmium-free and water-soluble AgInS2/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with a cost of 2.5 $/g are synthesized in an electric pressure cooker. The QD powders with different Ag/In ratios exhibit bright yellow, orange, and orange-red luminescence under UV light. Their absolute photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) can reach as high as 50.5, 57, and 52%, respectively. Because gelatin is used as the capping agent, the concentrated QDs/gelatin solution can be directly utilized as phosphor for the fabrication of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by a simple drop-drying process without the need of resin package. Warm-white LEDs are obtained by combining orange-emitting QDs with blue InGaN chip. As-fabricated warm-white LED exhibits a luminous efficacy of 39.85 lm/W, a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2634 K and a color rendering index (CRI) of 71 at a drive current of 20 mA. Furthermore, the electroluminescence (EL) stability of LED device and thermal stability of as-prepared QDs are evaluated.

Bifunctional Superparticles Achieved by Assembling Fluorescent CuInS2@ZnS Quantum Dots and Amphibious Fe3O4 Nanocrystals

Xiaoyu Sun,Ke Ding,Yi Hou,Zhenyu Gao,Wensheng Yang,Lihong Jing,Mingyuan Gao

Monodispersed superparticles (SPs) consisting of hydrophobic CuInS2@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were prepared through a self-assembling process induced by introducing ethanol into the cyclohexane solution of the QDs stabilized by 1-dodecanethiol. The solvent polarity-dependent size and size distribution of the resultant SPs were carefully characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. The formation and the growth mechanism of the SPs were investigated. By manipulating the nucleation and the growth kinetics through the addition rate of ethanol, the size was effectively tuned without broadening the size distribution of the SPs. By overcoating the SPs with amphibious Fe3O4 nanocrystals (NCs) stabilized by poly(4-vinylpyrollidone), aqueous dispersible SPs were obtained. Inheriting the fluorescent and magnetic properties from the corresponding mother particles, the resultant SPs presented excellent fluorescent and magnetic properties and, thus, may potentially be useful for bioseparation, detection, etc.

A novel phosphorescence sensor for Co2+ ion based on Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots

Wei Bian,Jing Ma,Qiaoling Liu,Yanli Wei,Yingfu Li,Chuan Dong,Shaomin Shuang

N -acetyl- l -cysteine-capped Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by hydrothermal methods. It could emit phosphorescence at 583 nm with the excitation wavelength at 315 nm. The phosphorescence intensity of QDs could be quenched dramatically by increasing the concentration of Co 2+ ion. The novel phosphorescence sensor based on N -acetyl- l -cysteine-capped QDs was developed for detecting Co 2+ ion with a linear dynamic range of 1.25 × 10 –6 –3.25 × 10 –5 m . The limit of detection and RSD were 6.0 × 10 –8 m and 2.3%, respectively. Interference experiments showed excellent selectivity over numerous cations such as alkali, alkaline earth and transitional metal ions. The possible quenching mechanism was also examined by phosphorescence decays. The proposed phosphorescence method was further applied to the trace determination of Co 2+ ion in tap and pond water samples with recoveries of 97.75–103.32%. Controllable synthesis of dual emissive Ag:InP/ZnS quantum dots with high fluorescence quantum yield

Wu Yang,Guoxing He,Shiliang Mei,Jiatao Zhu,Wanlu Zhang,Qiuhang Chen,Guilin Zhang,Ruiqian Guo

Dual emissive Cd-free quantum dots (QDs) are in great demand for various applications. However, their synthesis has been faced with challenges. Here, we demonstrate the dual emissive Ag:InP/ZnS core/shell QDs with the excellent photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) up to 75% and their PL dependence on the reaction temperature, reaction time, the different ZnX 2 (X   =   I, Cl, and Br) precursors, the ratio of In/Zn and the Ag dopant concentration. The as-prepared Ag:InP/ZnS QDs exhibit dual emission with one peak position of about 492   nm owing to the intrinsic emission, and the other peak position of about 575   nm resulting from Ag-doped emission. These dual emissive QDs are integrated with the commercial GaN-based blue LEDs, and the simulation results show that the Ag:InP/ZnS QDs-based white LEDs could realize bright natural white-lights with the luminous efficacy (LE) of 94.2-98.4   lm/W, the color rendering index (CRI) of 82–83 and the color quality scale (CQS) of 82–83 at different correlated color temperatures (CCT). This unique combination of the above properties makes this new class of dual emissive QDs attractive for white LED applications.

Paramagnetic albumin decorated CuInS2/ZnS QDs for CD133+ glioma bimodal MR/fluorescence targeted imaging

Jing Zhang,Guangyu Hao,Chenfei Yao,Su Hu,Chunhong Hu,Bingbo Zhang

Glioma stem cells (GSCs) are considered the key to the occurrence, development, invasion, recurrence and sensitivity to treatment of brain tumors. Precise molecular imaging of GSCs by means of probes in vivo has therefore become a premise of solving the above problems. Herein, a sensitive, specific, accurate and biocompatible molecular nanoprobe is reported with MR/fluorescence imaging modalities for CD133+ glioma tumor bimodal targeted imaging. Cd-free high quality CuInS2/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized for fluorescence imaging; DTPA-coupled BSA with Gd3+ chelation (BSA-DTPAGd) were prepared and used both for phase transfer of hydrophobic CuInS2/ZnS QDs and MR imaging modality. The resulting hydrophilic paramagnetic QDs (pQDs) were then linked with anti-CD133 monoclonal antibody, pQDs-CD133mAb denoting the framework of the entire molecular probe, for tumor targeting. The obtained pQDs-CD133mAb has a proper size (ca. 45 nm) and good colloidal stability. It exhibits a high quality fluorescent emission (ca. 630 nm) together with high longitudinal relaxivity (r1 = 15.2 mM−1 s−1) compared with that of commercial Magnevist (r1 = 3.12 mM−1 s−1). Dual modal imaging in vitro and in vivo shows potent tumor enhancement with administration of pQDs-CD133mAb. A biodistribution study indicates hepatobiliary and renal processing of pQDs-CD133mAb with no obvious toxicity. It could be therefore concluded, with a dual-modal imaging and targeting strategy, pQDs-CD133mAb presents a great potential as an alternative for accurate diagnosis of glioma.

1,2-Ethanedithiol Treatment for AgIn5S8/ZnS Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with High Brightness

Changyin Ji,Min Lu,Hua Wu,Xiaoyu Zhang,Xinyu Shen,Xiao Wang,Yu Zhang,Yiding Wang,William W. Yu

The surface organic ligands of the quantum dots (QDs) play important roles in the performance of QD electronic devices. Here, we fabricated low toxic AgIn5S8/ZnS QDs light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) and greatly enhanced the device efficiency through surface ligand exchange treatments. The oleic acid-capped QDs were replaced with a shorter ligand 1,2-ethanedithiol, which was proved by the Fourier transform infrared spectrum measurement. The treated QD films became more compact with higher film mobility and shorter film photoluminescence lifetime. The more conductive QD films fabricated LEDs showed an external quantum efficiency over 1.52%.

CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots with Enhanced Stability and Conductivity by Thiolphenyl Ligands for Displays

Hao Hao,Meng Liu,Ge Tang,Yi Liu,Feng-Lei Jiang

Thiol ligands are widely used to modify quantum dots (QDs) due to their strong affinity. Aromatic structures can be introduced to improve the charge transport of the QDs. In this work, the as-synthesized CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs were modified with thiolphenyl (TP) derivatives by ligand exchange. Photoluminescence (PL), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption, and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy were used to investigate the optical properties of QDs before and after ligand exchange. The elemental quantification by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy proved that TP ligands were adsorbed. The PL intensities of QDs were enhanced after ligand exchange with TP ligands (except for pentafluorothiophenol, PF-TP) through passivation. Besides, the QDs exhibited better stability and electrical conductivity. Combined with 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), fluorescence spectroscopy, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), the effects of electron-donating/-withdrawing ability and steric hindrance of the substituents on the ligand exchanges were analyzed. The reactions of QDs with TP ligands containing electron-donating substituents were exothermic and entropy-decreasing. However, the reactions with those ligands containing electron-withdrawing substituents were exothermic and entropy-increasing. Interestingly, the reaction of PF-TP with QDs could be fitted to a two-stage model. In general, we found that the stronger electron-donating ability of substituent would lead to less desorption of OA ligands, thus fewer trap states, and better passivation, stability, and conductivity of QDs. Good stability and conductivity of QDs are prerequisites for high performance in displays. This work will greatly contribute to the selection of aromatic ligands for QDs.
