Nowadays, water pollution caused by diverse poisonous compounds, particularly hydroxy aromatic compounds and their derivatives, has become a prominent environmental issue because of the possible toxicity to human beings. This research adopted an adsorptive method to remove catechol using a water-stable hydroxyl-functionalized terbium–organic framework for the first time. The as-synthesized new metal–organic framework (Tb–MOF) shows favorable thermostability and water stability based on results of thermogravimetric analyses, water vapor sorption, and powder X-ray diffraction. Along the c axis, Tb–MOF has a three-dimensional framework with channels of 8.4 × 8.1 Å2 as well as high adsorption capacity with the maximal adsorption capacities of 260 mg/g for catechol than that of any reported adsorbent so far. Thermodynamics, adsorption kinetics, effects of pH, and effects of temperature were investigated in a batch reactor. The remarkably high adsorption capacity of Tb–MOF could be explained by the appropriate pore diameter of Tb–MOF in addition to the hydrogen bonding interplay of catechol molecules with Tb–MOF. In a breakthrough adsorption process of the Tb–MOF packed column, the adsorption breakthrough curve of a fixed bed for the catechol was found to favorably fit with the Thomas model. Because of its excellent catechol adsorption performance, the obtained Tb–MOF can be considered as a promising and suitable candidate as a high-performance catechol adsorber.

In this study, a simple and sensitive electrochemical analytical method is developed for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) employing the three-dimensional functionalized graphene (3DFG) modified glass carbon electrode (GCE). The 3DFG modified electrode can distinguish between HQ and CC, with higher oxidation currents in comparison with bare GCE and two-dimensional graphene (Gr) modified electrode, showing the enhanced catalytic activity. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) shows that the isomers can be detected sensitively and selectively at 3DFG/GCE with peak-to-peak separation about 100 mV. Under the optimized conditions, the oxidation peak current increases linearly with concentration of HQ ranged from 3.10 × 10 −7 to 1.31 × 10 −5 M and concentration of CC ranged from 2.50 × 10 −7 to 1.29 × 10 −5 M, respectively. The detection limits are 1.0 × 10 −7 M and 8.0 × 10 −8 M for HQ and CC (S/N = 3), respectively. Moreover, the proposed method has been successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Carbon dots (CDs) were covalently linked to 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid molecules to form the 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid molecules-functionalized CDs (CPBA-CDs). The CPBA functional groups, which were reactive toward vicinal diols, could covalently bridge the catechol with the vicinal diol structures and would cause the fluorescence quenching via the static quenching mechanism. As the concentration of catechol increased, the fluorescent signal gradually decreased. The fluorescent response for catechol detection was in the linear ranges from 0.1 to 56 μM with the detection limit of 115 nM. We further demonstrated that CPBA-CDs with good biocompatibility were easily and quickly internalized by human umbilical vein endothelial cells and are particularly suitable for multicolour real-time cellular imaging.

The miniaturization and autonomous mobility of the artificial micro-composite have gained widespread interest and attention in the field of catechol treatment. Unfortunately, it is a bottleneck for micro-composite in realizing the integration of multiple functions such as colorimetric detection and removal of catechol. Herein, we construct a Janus micro-composite with dual functions of detection and degradation for the efficient detection and removal of catechol. The Janus micro-composite for laccase immobilization was prepared by growing manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO 2 NPs) on the hemisphere of copper sulfide (CuS) loaded with carbon (C) dots (Lac-MnO 2 @C@CuS). The half-coated MnO 2 NPs is used as a power source to generate oxygen (O 2 ), which drives the Janus micro-composite for autonomous directional motion at a speed of 178.83 ± 2.07 μm/s in the presence of 5 wt% H 2 O 2 . The Janus micro-composite with excellent peroxidase-like properties could display sensitive detection of catechol with the detection limits of 0.49 μM in range of 0–100 μM. Furthermore, the Janus micro-composite could decompose H 2 O 2 to produce abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) through Fenton reaction , which could promote the removal rate of catechol up to 96.6%. This is a promising micro-composite platform for integrated autonomous movement and simultaneous detection/removal of catechol, which can provide a new perspective for water environment treatment.

Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) can significantly enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical sensing platforms due to the homogeneity of their active sites, full atom utilization, and high catalytic activity. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis and characterization of a high-density Co-based single-atom nanozyme anchored on activated MOF-derived porous carbon (Co-AcNC-3) via a cascade anchoring strategy for ultrasensitive, simultaneous electrochemical detection of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). The Co-AcNC-3 displays a large specific surface area , high defectivity, and abundant oxygen-containing groups, with Co atoms being atomically dispersed throughout the carbon support via Co–N bonds. The Co-AcNC-3 biosensor exhibits superior electrochemical signals for CC and HQ, with linear ranges of 4.0 μM–300.0 μM. and detection limits of 0.072 μM and 0.034 μM, respectively. Moreover, the Co-AcNC-3 biosensor has shown excellent performance in accurately detecting CC and HQ in actual samples. Our findings highlight the potential of the proposed Co-AcNC-3 biosensor as a reliable and promising sensing platform for determining CC and HQ.

In this study, the personal glucose meter (PGM) was first used as a fast and user-friendly meter for analyzing catechol (CA) based on the reduction of the mediator K3[Fe(CN)6] to K4[Fe(CN)6] in the glucose test strip. Then, an easy, low-cost, and convenient PGM-based method for detecting tyrosinase (TYR) activity and sodium benzoate (SBA) was developed on the basis of the TYR-catalyzed reaction. In this method, CA is oxidized to formo-benzoquinone by TYR, thereby reducing the residual amount of CA and the PGM readout. On the other hand, SBA can inhibit the oxidation of CA catalyzed by TYR and increase the residual amount of CA after the enzymatic reaction. Therefore, the activity of TYR is proportional to the difference in the PGM readout of CA, and the concentration of SBA is positively correlated with the residual amount of CA. After the relevant experimental conditions were systematically optimized, the proposed PGM-based method for the detection of TYR and SBA was successfully validated. The liner ranges are 1.0–103.3 U/mL and 6.25–1000 ppm, and the quantification limits are 1.0 U/mL and 6.25 ppm for TYR and SBA, respectively. Moreover, the spiked recovery tests in normal human serum and carbonate beverages (i.e., Cola, Sprite, and Fanta) were performed, and the recoveries (91.6–106.8%) further confirm the applicability of the PGM-based method in real sample analysis. Keywords:tyrosinase;sodium benzoate;personal glucose meter;enzyme sensor;carbonate beverages sample

Developing a strong soybean protein adhesive with long-term adhesion and multiple functions to replace petroleum-based adhesives is important but challenging. Inspired by the biomineralization strategy, soybean protein as a matrix, 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid as a crosslinker, a self-synthesized hyperbranched catechol polymer (DBA@HBPA) as a catechol group donor, and AgNO 3 as an Ag + donor were used to develop a strong and multifunctional soybean protein adhesive. The results showed that the coating and prepressing performance of the adhesive was improved by the addition of DBA@HBPA. The prepressing intensity of the adhesive improved by 156% and reached 0.89 MPa. Benefiting from the dynamic balance of quinone-catechol produced by Ag NPs and the super antimildew and antibacterial properties of Ag NPs and boron, the adhesive exhibited long-term adhesion behavior (pot life of 12 d), excellent mildew resistance (30 d), and antibacterial properties (colony count of 0). The wet shear strength of plywood prepared by the resultant adhesive was 1.28 MPa, which was 106% higher than that of the SPI adhesive. In addition, the resultant adhesive exhibited fire retardancy (LOI = 37.4%) and low VOCs emission (4.26*10 6 mg/m 2 ·h). This biomimetic design provides a novel and efficient strategy for the preparation of high-adhesion, multifunctional biomass composite adhesives.

In this work, a novel sensing strategy for catechol was successfully developed based on a two-dimensional copper-based metal-organic framework (2D Cu-MOF) with high polyphenol oxidase activity. The 2D Cu-MOF was prepared from dimethylimidazole and Cu 2+ by stirring in a mixture solvent of methanol and water. We firstly found that the 2D Cu-MOF exhibited high polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity by catalyzing the typical PPO substrate to produce a red color. And the PPO activity of the 2D Cu-MOF was higher than those of the other two reported PPO-mimicking enzymes at the same mass concentration. Subsequently, based on the effective PPO activities of the 2D Cu-MOF, we established a simple and rapid colorimetric method for detecting catechol with a detection limit of 0.35 µg mL −1 . This method was also used to detect catechol in city water with satisfying results.

Commercial tissue adhesives have been widely applied in wound hemostats and dressings while enhancing the hemostasis and healing capabilities is challenging to meet clinical needs. Herein, we designed the glucose- and catechol-functionalized derivatives from commercial ε -polylysine (EPL) and prepared the hydrogels by simple amidation and catechol-crosslinking reactions, which have larger swelling ratios of 220%–240%, suitable microporous size of about 6–8 µ m, and tissue adhesion strength of about 20–40 kPa. The hemolysis, cytotoxicity, and cellular double-staining assays indicate that those hydrogels had good biocompatibility and the H-3 hydrogel with higher glucose content gave a lower hemolysis ratio of 0.73%±0.14%. The blood-clotting index, blood cell attachment and adhesion studies showed those hydrogels had fast blood-coagulation, resulting in excellent hemostasis performance with a short hemostatic time of 38–46 s and less blood loss of 19%–34% in a liver hemorrhage model. A full-thickness rat-skin defect model further demonstrates that the H-3 hydrogel achieved fast wound healing with a wound closure of 70.0%±2.7% on postoperative day 7 and nearly full closure on day 14. Remarkably, the hydroproline level that denotes the collagen production reached a higher one of 7.24±0.55 µg/mg comparable to that in normal skins on day 14, evidencing the wound healing was close to completion in the H-3 treatment. Consequently, this work provides a simple method to construct a glycosylated and catechol-functionalized hydrogel platform from commercial EPL, holding translational potentials in wound hemostats and dressings.

The surface modification of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to improve their anti-biofouling properties is gaining increased attention. Here, we modified the polyamide brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) membrane via the biomimetic co-deposition of catechol (CA)/tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and in situ growth of Ag nanoparticles. Ag ions were reduced into Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) without extraneous reducing agents. The hydrophilic property of the membrane was improved, and the zeta potential was also increased after the deposition of poly (catechol/polyamine) and AgNPs. Compared with the original RO membrane, the optimized PCPA3-Ag10 membrane showed a slight reduction in water flux, and the salt rejection declined, but enhanced anti-adhesion and anti-bacterial activities were observed. TheFDRtof the PCPA3-Ag10 membranes during the filtration of BSA, SA and DTAB solution were 5.63 ± 0.09%, 18.34 ± 0.33% and 34.12 ± 0.15%, respectively, much better than those of the original membrane. Moreover, the PCPA3-Ag10 membrane exhibited a 100% reduction in the number of viable bacteria (B. subtilis and E. coli) inoculated on the membrane. The stability of the AgNPs was also high enough, and these results verify the effectiveness of poly (catechol/polyamine) and the AgNP-based modification strategy for the control of fouling. Keywords:RO membrane;anti-fouling;co-deposition;poly (catechol/polyamine);silver nanoparticles

Graphical Take a dip : A composite membrane based on SiO 2 and a low-cost poly(catechol/polyamine) (PCPA) multicomponent system is prepared by using a simple dip-coating process. The resulting membrane exhibits excellent thermal stability and wettability. A composite membrane based on SiO 2 and a low-cost poly(catechol/polyamine) (PCPA) multicomponent system was prepared by using a simple dip-coating processes. The results indicate that the formation of an inorganic/organic composite coating on the surface of the polyethylene (PE) separator is beneficial for improving the comprehensive performance, especially for the thermal stability and wettability. Compared to the PE separator, the thermal stability of the PE@SiO 2 -PCPA composite membrane is greatly improved, showing a higher decomposition temperature (426 °C) and a smaller heat shrinkage rate at 160 °C. Moreover, the Li/LiCoO 2 battery assembled with the PE@SiO 2 -PCPA composite membrane shows an excellent initial discharge capacity and a remarkable capacity retention (171.5 mAh g −1 , 86.1 %) at 4.4 V after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, which much higher than the PE membrane (165.2 mAh g −1 , 61.4 %). This study provides a potential application for membranes with low cost, high thermal stability, and good wettability in the field of lithium-ion batteries.

An innovative electrochemical sensor was developed based on the modification of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface with graphene oxide aerogel (GA) wrapped copper centered metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) and was applied to the detection of trace catechol (CT). The morphology, structure of GA/Cu-MOF and electrochemical properties of GA/Cu-MOF/GCE were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrochemical techniques, respectively. GA/Cu-MOF/GCE has a wide linear range of 12.5–900 μmol∙L −1 ( R 2 = 0.997) and a low limit detection of 1.65 μmol∙L −1 . Compared with the unmodified GCE, GA/Cu-MOF/GCE shows better stability, greater sensitivity and higher repeatability. Importantly, this new modified material was successfully prepared and used for the detection of trace amounts of catechol, providing a new idea for electrochemical detection.
