Dual S-scheme heterojunction via MOF-on-MOF strategy for efficient photoelectrocatalytic removal of organic contaminants: detoxification and mechanism

Qiang Li,Qi Zhou,Yanling Wu,Yingxue Shi,Yingqi Liu,Hao Deng,Siwei Chen,Zhiheng Li,Erpeng Wang,Huayue Zhu,Qi Wang

Accelerating the separation of carriers in the heterojunction plays vital role in the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) process, yet it remains a challenging undertaking. Herein, a MOF-on-MOF based dual S-scheme heterojunction (BiVO 4 /NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)/NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe), denoted as BVO/NM125/NM53) was rationally designed and prepared for PEC removing and detoxification of organic contaminants (phenol, tetracycline hydrochloride, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin). The S-scheme heterojunction was double confirmed by DFT calculation and XPS analysis. The charge transfer resistance of BVO/NM125/NM53 photoanode decreases to 1/11 of bare BiVO 4 photoanode. Meanwhile, the photocurrent density was 3 times higher, demonstrating a marked improvement in carrier separation efficiency due to dual S-scheme heterojunction. The photoanode achieved 94.3 % removal of phenol within 60 min and maintained stable performance over 10 consecutive cycles, demonstrating good PEC efficiency and structural stability. The BVO/NM125/NM53 photoanode also showed effectiveness in removing antibiotics, with chlorophyll fluorescence imaging confirming a significant reduction in the ecotoxicity of intermediates. For example, wheat seed germination, growth, chlorophyll and Carotenoid production were not affected, which was similar to that of deionized water. Radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identified •O 2 - and •OH as the primary active species. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of developing MOF-on-MOF heterojunctions for visible-light response and enhancing charge separation in PEC.

Detoxification of coal-tar pitch by alkylation method and toxicity evaluation by chemical index, fumes and water-soluble substances

Wen-shuo Zhang,Li-peng Tan,Jun Shen,Yu-gao Wang,Gang Liu,Qing-bai Xu

Coal-tar pitch (CTP) output in China has consistently exceeded 7 million tons annually since 2011. CTP contains 16 toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are preferentially monitored by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As a result, the widespread and extensive use of CTP is restricted. Consequently, finding ways to reduce the toxicity of CTP has become an urgent concern. In the paper, the reaction conditions were optimized using model compounds (naphthalene, fluorene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo [a]pyrene) of CTP. Subsequently, the CTP was modified through alkylation reaction using 1-dodecene, and the detoxification effect was evaluated based on chemical index, fumes, and water-soluble substances. The total content of 16 toxic PAHs in the modified CTP (MCTP) decreased by 75.56% compared to the original CTP. The toxicity equivalent quotient (TEQ) of the MCTP was reduced by more than 65% according to different environmental standards. The content of the 16 PAHs detected in MCTP fumes released at 140 °C decreased by 80.89%, while in water-soluble substances it decreased by 64.04% and 76.67% at 30 °C and 60 °C, respectively. These results strongly indicate the effectiveness of the alkylation method in reducing the toxicity of CTP. However, in order to develop more environmentally-friendly materials, it is necessary to explore more efficient catalysts and cheaper modifiers, which will be the focus of our future research. Novelty Statement This study investigated the toxicity inhibition of CTP to reduce the content of PAHs by alkylation method. The modification process was analyzed using model compounds to understand the potential reaction pathways. The objective of toxicity inhibition was achieved by creating low-toxicity and long-chain alkyl substitutes. Additionally, the toxicity of CTP and MCTP was assessed by introducing fumes and water-soluble substances.

Identification of 14 glutathione S-transferase genes from Lasioderma serricorne and characterization of LsGSTe1 involved in lambda-cyhalothrin detoxification

Xi-Ya Liu,Hui-Mei Sun,Yi-Hong Luo,Mao-Ye Li,Hai-Bing Liu,Su Liu

In insects, glutathione S -transferases (GSTs) play a pivotal role in the detoxification of a wide range of pesticides. The cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne , is an economically important pest insect of stored products. Recently, pyrethroid insecticides have been used to control this pest. However, little is known concerning the responses and functions of GSTs in L. serricorne under pyrethroid exposure. In this study, transcriptome sequencing was performed on L. serricorne , and a total of 14 GSTs were identified by retrieving the unigene dataset. Of these, 13 predicted GSTs fell into six cytosolic classes, namely, delta, epsilon, omega, sigma, theta, and zeta, and one was assigned to an “unclassified” group. The GST genes were differentially expressed in various larval tissues and at different developmental stages. Exposure to the pyrethroid insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin (LCT) caused oxidative stress in L. serricorne larvae and led to significantly elevated expression levels of six genes, among which LsGSTe1 was the most upregulated. Recombinant LsGSTE1 protein displayed LCT-metabolizing activity. Furthermore, LsGSTE1 protects cells against oxidative stress. Moreover, knockdown of LsGSTe1 by RNA interference dramatically increased the susceptibility of L. serricorne larvae to LCT treatment. The results from this study provide sequence resources and expression data for GST genes in L. serricorne . Our findings indicate that LsGSTE1 plays a dual role in LCT detoxification by metabolizing the pesticide and by preventing LCT-induced oxidative stress. Thus, the LsGSTe1 gene could be used as a potential target for sustainable management of the cigarette beetle.

Rational Design of a Zr-MOF@Curli-Polyelectrolyte Hybrid Membrane toward Efficient Chemical Protection, Moisture Permeation, and Catalytic Detoxification

Jing Liu,Heguo Li,Bin Yan,Chao Zhong,Yue Zhao,Xuan Guo,Jinyi Zhong

Developing high-performance protective materials is important for soldiers and civilians who are exposed to the atmosphere of highly toxic chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Polyelectrolyte membranes are promising candidates with excellent chemical resistance and moisture permeability, but they cannot efficiently degrade CWAs. Here, we design and prepare a hybrid membrane through in situ growth of catalytically active zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) on a polyelectrolyte membrane mediated by biofilm-inspired curli nanofibers (CNFs). Superior to the bare polyelectrolyte membrane, the prepared MOF-808@CNF-PQ hybrid membrane exhibits improved rejection of the nerve agent simulant dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) vapor and permeation of the water vapor by 113 and 45%, respectively. The water/DMMP selectivity of the hybrid membrane reaches 498.6, approximately 13 times that of the commercial polyelectrolyte membrane Nafion 117. In addition, the hybrid membrane possesses appreciable catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of the nerve agent simulant dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) with a half-life of ∼38 min. Nanomechanical characterization results based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques demonstrate the critical role of CNFs in mediating Zr-MOF nucleation and the dominant effect of electrostatic interactions on self-assembly of CNFs on polyelectrolyte base. It is also confirmed that the Zr-MOF toppings serve as the key components in physically adsorbing and chemically degrading the DMNP molecules through multiple strong intermolecular interactions. Our work offers a rational strategy to develop advanced membranes toward efficient chemical protection, moisture permeation, and catalytic detoxification against CWAs.

Aerobic decolorization and detoxification of Acid Scarlet GR by a newly isolated salt-tolerant yeast strain Galactomyces geotrichum GG

Guang Guo,Fang Tian,Yanhong Zhao,Maomao Tang,Weijie Liu,Cong Liu,Shuwen Xue,Weina Kong,Yanmei Sun,Shiwei Wang

Azo dyes are huge social and environmental hazards. Selective fungi are potential degraders for azo dyes and are of great significance to cleaning up and bioremediation. In this study, a salt-tolerant yeast strain GG with the ability to aerobically degrade and detoxify various azo dyes was isolated and identified as Galactomyces geotrichum . The optimal growth and decolorization parameters of strain GG were 0.1 g/L of yeast extract, 2.0 g/L of glucose, 0.4 g/L of ammonium sulfate , ≤ 40 g/L of NaCl, and pH values of 7.0–8.0. Under the optimal condition more than 92% of 100 mg/L of Acid Scarlet GR could be decolorized within 10 h by degradation, which was further confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . In addition, enzymatic analysis showed that the reductase NADH-DCIP and two oxidoreductases lignin peroxidase and laccase played the key roles in the degradation of Acid Scarlet GR, and the decolorization metabolites of Acid Scarlet GR exhibited much less toxicity than the parent dye by phytotoxicity assessment. The results improved the knowledge of azo-dye-decolorizing G. geotrichum species and provided efficient fungal resource for treatment of industrial wastewater containing azo dyes and salts.

Identification and Functional Analysis of a Delta Class Glutathione S-Transferase Gene Associated with Insecticide Detoxification in Bradysia odoriphaga

Bowen Tang,Wu Dai,Lijun Qi,Qi Zhang,Chunni Zhang

A delta class glutathione S-transferase gene (BoGSTd2) is identified from Bradysia odoriphaga for the first time. Developmental expression analysis showed that expression of BoGSTd2 is significantly higher in the fourth instar larval stage and the adult stage. Tissue-specific expression analysis found that BoGSTd2 was expressed predominantly in the midgut and Malpighian tubules in the fourth instar larvae and the abdomen of adults. Expression of BoGSTd2 was significantly upregulated following exposure to chlorpyrifos and clothianidin. In vitro inhibition and metabolic assays indicated that recombinant BoGSTd2 could not directly metabolize chlorpyrifos and clothianidin. Nevertheless, disk diffusion assays indicated that BoGSTd2 plays an important role in protection against oxidative stress. RNAi assays showed that BoGSTd2 participates in the elimination of reactive oxygen species induced by chlorpyrifos and clothianidin. These results strongly suggest that BoGSTd2 plays an important role in chlorpyrifos and clothianidin detoxification in B. odoriphaga by protecting tissues from oxidative stress induced by these insecticides.

Boosted electrochemical reduction detoxification and oxidation of clofibric acid by polymerized ionic liquid functionalized cathode: Parameter optimization and degradation mechanisms

Chen Chen,Shaoyuan Bai,Pengyu Liu,Dandan Xu,Xiaojie Sun,Mei Wang,Yawen Yuan

The application of electrocatalytic degradation technology in the treatment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has attracted widespread attention currently. Through structure and properties characterization of catalysts we found that more uniformly distributed metal particles and excellent thermal stability were obtained by modification with poly(1-vinyl-3-butylimidazole hexafluorophosphate) ([(PV)BIM]PF 6 ) on graphene to anchor the metal CoNi nanoparticles (CoNi/PILs-rGO). For assessing its application potential, the CoNi/PILs-rGO cathode in combination with Ti/RuO 2 /IrO 2 anode to set up an experimental reaction system for the electrocatalytic degradation of clofibric acid (CA) simulated wastewater. Reactor settings for experimentation are optimized, and intermediates, alterations in toxicity during degradation, and active species are detected. The results of the single-factor experiment showed that the average removal rate of CA by the cathodic compartment was 97.18 % when the conditions were optimal. Two possible pathways of degradation are deduced from the CA intermediates, one is the C-Cl bond breaking in electrochemical reduction, and the other is that the C-O bond is directly broken by anodic reactive oxygen. Toxicity tests have shown that the anode produces some by-products that are more hazardous than the original chemical, while the cathode produces a dechlorination process that is ultimately more detoxifying.

Degradation and detoxification of 6PPD-quinone in water by ultraviolet-activated peroxymonosulfate: Mechanisms, byproducts, and impact on sediment microbial community

Wenyan Yu,Shaoyu Tang,Jonathan W.C. Wong,Zhujun Luo,Zongrui Li,Phong K. Thai,Minghan Zhu,Hua Yin,Junfeng Niu

N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) has been identified to induce acute toxicity to multifarious aquatic organisms at exceptionally low concentrations. The ubiquity and harmful effects of 6PPD-Q emphasize the critical need for its degradation from water ecosystems. Herein, we explored the transformation of 6PPD-Q by an ultraviolet-activated peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) system, focusing on mechanism, products and toxicity variation. Results showed that complete degradation of 6PPD-Q was achieved when the initial ratio of PMS and 6PPD-Q was 60:1. The quenching experiments and EPR tests indicated that SO 4 •− and •OH radicals were primarily responsible for 6PPD-Q removal. Twenty-one degradation products were determined through high-resolution orbitrap mass spectrometry, and it was postulated that hydroxylation, oxidative cleavage, quinone decomposition, ring oxidation, as well as rearrangement and deamination were the major transformation pathways of 6PPD-Q. Toxicity prediction revealed that all identified products exhibited lower acute and chronic toxicities to fish, daphnid and green algae compared to 6PPD-Q. Exposure experiments also uncovered that 6PPD-Q considerably reduced the community diversity and altered the community assembly and functional traits of the sediment microbiome. However, we discovered that the toxicity of 6PPD-Q degradation solutions was effectively decreased, suggesting the superior detoxifying capability of the UV/PMS system for 6PPD-Q. These findings highlight the underlying detrimental impacts of 6PPD-Q on aquatic ecosystems and enrich our understanding of the photochemical oxidation behavior of 6PPD-Q.

Effective charge kinetics steering in surface plasmons coupled two-dimensional chemical Au/Bi2WO6-MoS2 heterojunction for superior photocatalytic detoxification performance

Jun Wan,Yue Zhang,Ruimiao Wang,Lin Liu,Enzhou Liu,Jun Fan,Feng Fu

Developing and designing a rational heterojunction with efficient charge kinetics properties have been a research hotspot for improving photocatalytic performance. Herein, a surface plasmons coupled two-dimensional chemical Au/Bi 2 WO 6 -MoS 2 heterojunction was synthesized. In thus a system, Au nanoparticles are tightly attached to the sides of Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets , conducting a HEI effect with additional visible light response to inject “hot electrons” into Bi 2 WO 6 , resulting in additional charge generation. Meanwhile, few-layer MoS 2 nanosheets were chemically assembled onto ultrathin Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets via interfacial S O bonds to form a intimate 2D-2D nanojunction, the separated and injected electrons on the surface of Bi 2 WO 6 were further directional transfer to MoS 2 nanosheets through S O bonds for detoxification of heavy metal ions Cr(VI), and the corresponding holes left on Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets were applied for simultaneous degradation of tetracycline antibiotic. The photocatalytic detoxification activity of Au/Bi 2 WO 6 -MoS 2 was nearly 4.84, 3.47 and 1.90 times higher than that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 , Au/Bi 2 WO 6 and Bi 2 WO 6 -MoS 2 composites, which could be ascribed to the effective charge kinetics steering and well manipulation of charge flow by virtue of the rational structural and compositional features. This work provides a new perspective for the construction of high-activity detoxification photocatalysts through steering charge kinetics.

Synergistic division of labor in a bacterial consortium for enhanced phenanthrene mineralization under cadmium stress: mechanisms of degradation-detoxification coordination

Tianzuo Cheng,Pengyu Zhou,Mingle Zhang,Tianyin Huang,Bingdang Wu,Jinlong Zhuang,Bin Wang,Xiaoyi Xu

The remediation of co-contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals poses a significant challenge. Although microbial consortia present a promising approach, their synergistic mechanisms under stress conditions are not fully understood. To address this gap, we constructed a functionally specialized bacterial consortium (KZ) by assembling Klebsiella sp. CW-D3T and Arthrobacter sp. SZ-3, which synergistically enhanced phenanthrene (PHE) degradation and mineralization under cadmium stress (25 mg/L Cd 2+ ), outperforming monocultures by 1.2–1.9-fold. Through biomass-normalized enzyme activity assays, we uncovered a structured division of labor: SZ-3 exhibited superior upstream catalytic activity (50 % higher 2H1N conversion), while CW-D3T dominated downstream mineralization (>80 % contribution). Mechanistic investigations via metagenomics revealed that CW-D3T utilized high-expression efflux pumps (ZntA/zinT) and antioxidant genes ( yhcN ) to mitigate cadmium toxicity, whereas SZ-3 employed the frnE -mediated oxidative stress response and limited Cd 2+ uptake via mntH . This study elucidates a synergistic mechanism for concurrent PAH degradation and heavy metal detoxification, offering a novel bioresource for remediating co-contaminated environments.

Isolation and evaluation of probiotics from traditional Chinese foods for aflatoxin B1 detoxification: Geotrichum candidum XG1 (yeast) and mechanistic insights

Gang Yang,Bin Li,Kewei Chen,Muying Du,Zsolt Zalán,Ferenc Hegyi,Jianquan Kan

Identifying aflatoxin-detoxifying probiotics remains a significant challenge in mitigating the risks associated with aflatoxin contamination in crops. Biological detoxification is a popular technique that reduces mycotoxin hazards and garners consumer acceptance. Through multiple rounds of screening and validation tests, Geotrichum candidum XG1 demonstrated the ability to degrade aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) by 99–100%, exceeding the capabilities of mere adsorption mechanisms. Notably, the degradation efficiency was demonstrably influenced by the presence of copper and iron ions in the liquid medium, suggesting a potential role for proteases in the degradation process. Subsequent validation experiments with red pepper revealed an 83% reduction in AFB 1 levels following fermentation with G. candidum XG1. Furthermore, mass spectrometry analysis confirmed the disruption of the AFB 1 furan ring structure, leading to a subsequent reduction in its toxicity. Collectively, these findings establish G. candidum XG1 as a promising candidate for effective aflatoxin degradation, with potential applications within the food industry.

Detoxification of T-2 toxin in human chondrocytes due to its hydroxylation by carboxylesterases and arylacetamide deacetylase in the liver

Shiqiang Cheng,Sirong Shi,Bolun Cheng,Chen Liu,Xuena Yang,Li Liu,Huan Liu,Yan Wen,Alexey A. Tinkov,Anatoly V. Skalny,Yumeng Jia,Feng Zhang

T-2 toxin, a trichothecene mycotoxin produced by Fusarium species, is a global cereal contaminant and an important environmental risk factor for cartilage damage and Kashin–Beck disease (KBD). Although hydrolysis is a major metabolic pathway of T-2 toxin, the human enzymes responsible and their toxicological relevance remain poorly understood. In this study, human liver microsomes, recombinant hydrolases, and selective inhibitors were used to identify the key enzymes mediating T-2 hydrolysis, and LC–MS/MS was applied to quantify T-2 and its major metabolites. Human chondrocytes were further used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of T-2 and its hydrolytic metabolites (HT-2 toxin, neosolaniol, and T-2 tetraol). T-2 toxin was predominantly hydrolyzed to HT-2 toxin, primarily by carboxylesterases (CES1, CES2), with inhibitor-based evidence supporting a potential role for arylacetamide deacetylase (AADAC). The toxicity ranking was T-2 toxin > HT-2 toxin > neosolaniol > T-2 tetraol. T-2 toxin markedly impaired autophagy and extracellular matrix metabolism in chondrocytes, whereas its metabolites showed weaker cytotoxicity. These findings indicate that human CES1 and CES2, together with other hydrolases including AADAC, contributing to the hydrolysis and detoxification of T-2 toxin and may represent potential targets for mitigating T-2–associated cartilage damage and KBD risk.
