Plants exhibit rapid responses to biotic and abiotic stresses by releasing a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Monitoring changes in these VOCs holds the potential for the early detection of plant diseases. This study proposes a method for identifying late blight in potatoes based on the detection of (E) -2-hexenal, one of the major VOC markers released during plant infection by Phytophthora infestans . By combining the Michael addition reaction with cysteine-mediated etching of aggregation-induced emission gold nanoclusters (Au NCs), we have developed a portable hydrogel kit for on-site detection of (E) -2-hexenal. The Michael addition reaction between (E) -2-hexenal and cysteine effectively alleviates the etching of cysteine-mediated Au NCs, leading to a distinct fluorescence color change in the Au NCs, enabling a detection limit of 0.61 ppm. Utilizing the superior loading and diffusion characteristics of the three-dimensional structure of agarose hydrogel, our sensor demonstrated exceptional performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, reaction time, and ease of use. Moreover, quantitative measurement of (E) -2-hexenal was made easier by using ImageJ software to transform fluorescent images from the hydrogel kit into digital data. Such method was effectively used for the early detection of potato late blight. This study presents a low-cost, portable fluorescent analytical tool, offering a new avenue for on-site detection of plant diseases.

Superhydrophobic wearable flexible sensors possess significant application potential in detecting human behaviors within amphibious environments. However, under complex wetting conditions, the failure of the superhydrophobic coating poses a critical challenge, as it degrades the internal conductive network and leads to device malfunction. Herein, we present an all-weather amphibious e-textile (AWAE) with a micro-/nano-armored superhydrophobicity, achieved by integrating an MXene–chitosan conductive layer with a fluorinated dot-line interwoven mesh coating. Such AWAE exhibits exceptional environmental robustness, retaining superhydrophobicity and stable sensing under mechanical abrasion, chemical corrosion (acid/alkali/salt), extreme temperatures, and UV exposure. Notably, the AWAE enables continuous and accurate monitoring of human joint motions, underwater gestures, and robotic operations even in simulated seawater. This work provides a durable and versatile platform for all-weather amphibious sensing, with potential applications in healthcare, marine robotics, and smart underwater wearable systems.

Bacterial infections are becoming a significant threat to global human health due to the growing prevalence of biofilm-related infections and the rise in antibiotic resistance. D/ l -cysteine functionalized chiral gold nanoparticles (D/P-Au NPs or L/P-Au NPs) have demonstrated a potent antibacterial effect against E. coli , while the mechanism remains to be elucidated through additional research. Threonine deaminase (TD) is a crucial enzyme involved in branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) biosynthesis in E. coli and is involved in cysteine's antimicrobial effects. This study investigated the interaction between chiral Au NPs (D/P-Au NPs or L/P-Au NPs) and TD as well as its effect on enzyme activity. It demonstrates that chiral Au NPs interact with TD through hydrophobic forces, forming a ground state complex that induces changes in the secondary structure of TD and reduces enzyme activity in a concentration-dependent manner. We found that the exogenous supplementation of isoleucine and valine (2 mg/mL) significantly reduced the antibacterial activity of chiral Au NPs, especially for L/P-Au NPs. The proteomics results indicate that the expression of ilvA and ilvB was down-regulated after L/P-Au NPs treatment, which would interfere with the synthesis of BCAAs. These results demonstrate that chiral Au NPs cause cell death of E. coli partly due to inhibition of TD enzyme activity and the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids.

As a result of amphipathic oligomers driven by different forces including hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic interaction, H-bond, and heat, multiscale emulsion particles can be wrapped. In this paper we attempted to use sodium shellac as a novel biobased wrapping material. The H+, Ca+, and spray-drying methods were employed to solidify the complex vitamin E (VE) emulsion with sodium shellac to fabricate the beads. The VE loading and encapsulation efficiency were used to evaluate the wrapping process. The results show that the microscale VE emulsion particles could easily be wrapped by these three means. However, due to the high solid content of the nanoscale emulsion particles, it was difficult to wrap them by spray-drying method. The beads solidified by H+ had higher VE loading and encapsulation efficiency than those solidified by other methods and even grabbed the hydrophobic molecule VE from the emulsion micelles. At an RVS of 1:4, these two parameters, which are obtained by the nanoscale emulsion particle wrapping process, could reach 18.9 and 64.3% supported by the single driving force of hydrophobic interaction. Above all, this research introduced a novel wrapping material driven by different forces that can aggregate and wrap the emulsion micelles. It can be widely used in the medical, food, and cosmetics industries.

Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid for organisms. The separation and purification are important for the production of l -methionine from fermentation broth. In this work, the adsorption properties for l -methionine separation of ten macroporous resins were firstly evaluated. Macroporous cation resin D72 showed the best adsorption capacity (52.37 mg/g) and desorption rate (99.12%). The adsorption kinetics of l -methionine on D72 resin followed the pseudo second-order model and adsorption isotherm fitted well to the Sips model, the adsorption process mainly followed a physisorption mechanism. D72 resin packed columns were then used in the batch separation of fermentation broth, the operation parameters were optimized during the dynamic adsorption and desorption experiments. Under the optimized conditions: fermentation broth adjusted to pH = 2, loading flow rate at 2 BV/h, loading volume 55 mL, 1 mol/L NH 3 ·H 2 O as eluent , elution flow rate at 2 BV/h, column height-diameter ratio at 14:1, excellent recovery and purity of l -methionine (82.37% and 85.69%, respectively) could be achieved.

A sulfonated chitosan (SCS) was prepared via nucleophilic substitution and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra, gel permeation chromatography, elemental analysis, and thermo gravimetric analysis. The inhibition activities of bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation against E. coli and S. aureus of SCS were assessed in comparison with those of unmodified chitosan hydrochloride (WCS) which was commercially available. The metabolic activity and secretion of exopolysaccharide in biofilms of E. coli and S. aureus were significantly decreased after the treatment of SCS. Scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy also demonstrated that SCS and WCS at 1MIC concentrations could obviously inhibit the formation of biofilm. Upon the experimental data obtained, it can be concluded that the alkylsulfonation of chitosan could significantly improve efficacy in killing biofilm-embedded bacteria, and the inhibition activities against biofilm formation of E. coli and S. aureus . The exploitation of SCS in this study is helpful to extend the understanding to an alternative to antibiotics and chemical preservatives in food and medicine fields.

Background/Objectives: The frequent use of antibiotics has led to increasing drug resistance inAeromonas hydrophila; therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel antimicrobial agents to prevent and control bacterial diseases in aquaculture. Allicin E (ALE) is derived from garlic (Allium sativumL.), a plant extensively used in traditional medicine for treating infections. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of ALE againstA. hydrophila, a major aquaculture pathogen, by investigating its antibacterial efficacy, mechanisms of action, and in vivo protective effects. Methods: The minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations (MIC/MBC) were determined by broth microdilution. Antibacterial mechanisms were investigated through ROS detection, electron microscopy, fluorescent staining, and content leakage measurement. In vivo efficacy was evaluated inCarassius auratus gibelioby monitoring survival rates and bacterial loads, analyzing immune and antioxidant biomarkers, and histopathological analysis afterA. hydrophilachallenge. Results: ALE exhibited potent antibacterial activity (MIC = MBC = 8 μg/mL), achieving complete bacterial elimination within 1 h and showing a low resistance propensity. Mechanistically, ALE induced ROS accumulation, causing oxidative damage that disrupted membrane integrity and facilitated the leakage of cellular contents. In vivo, ALE significantly enhanced fish survival, reduced bacterial loads, modulated inflammatory cytokines, boosted antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD and CAT), and alleviated tissue damage. Conclusions: ALE possesses potent in vitro antibacterial activity and exerts an inhibitory effect on bacteria-induced inflammatory responses, effectively combatingA. hydrophilathrough a multi-target mechanism and enhancing host resistance.

Zeolite Beta, a prototypical intergrowth zeolite with a three-dimensional (3D) system of intersecting 12-member-ring micropore channels, is extensively employed as a versatile solid-acid catalyst. Its structure typically appears as a nanoscale intergrowth of polymorphs arising from the stacking disorder of topologically equivalent layers. Rational regulation of the Beta polymorph composition is, therefore, crucial for optimizing catalytic performance. Here, we report a heterostructure seed-assisted crystallization strategy to synthesize a polymorph E-enriched Beta zeolite (Beta-ER). The 3D electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging, and DIFFaX simulation show that Beta-ER is an intergrown structure of polymorph E/D with polymorph E as the main phase (∼80%). Powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, Raman, and 19F magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance characterizations suggest that ITQ-1 seeds partially deconstruct in the early stage of crystallization and generate secondary structural building units, which subsequently promote the formation of Beta-ER. In the etherification of FA, Beta-ER with moderate acidity and open pore channels delivers a higher furfuryl ethyl ether (FEE) yield (75.4%) after 30 min at 393 K, outperforming the commercial ZSM-5 (14.2%), Beta (55.9%), and BEC (57.2%) zeolites. Beta-ER maintained stable activity after four regeneration cycles. Density functional theory calculations confirm that substituting framework Al with Ge increases the energy barrier for the ring opening of FEE, thereby suppressing the formation of byproducts. In addition, kinetic analysis and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the interconnected channel system of Beta-ER facilitates the diffusion of substrates and products.

The growing demand for integrated temperature-pressure sensing in human-machine interaction and health monitoring makes smart textiles an ideal medium due to their comfort, breathability, and flexibility. However, a key challenge is finding a reliable method to integrate high-performance dual-mode sensors into textile substrates while ensuring effective signal decoupling. Herein, a flexible, ultrathin, and signal-decoupled temperature-pressure dual-mode sensing electronic textile is proposed. The resistive temperature sensing unit utilizes a multi-stage phase transition mechanism to achieve an ultrahigh temperature coefficient of resistance (up to 125.9%/°C) and a broad temperature sensing range (0°C–50°C). The capacitive pressure sensing unit exhibits high sensitivity (up to 62.3 kPa −1 ) and rapid pressure response and recovery times (30 ms/60 ms). By integrating machine learning algorithms, precise recognition of different objects being grasped is achieved. Furthermore, through the fabrication of a sensor array, spatial mapping of pressure and temperature distributions on a simulated body surface is successfully realized, offering a promising route toward developing versatile health-monitoring platforms.

Reductive dehalogenases (RDases) are a family of enzymes that employ a cobamide cofactor and two iron-sulfur clusters to selectively cleave carbon-halogen bonds. The identification of yet-uncharacterized RDases is crucial for advancing our understanding of dehalogenation processes in both natural and engineered environments, particularly for bioremediation. In this study, we developed a heterologous expression system in Escherichia coli DH5α to produce a chloroform-reducing RDase (TmrA) from Dehalobacter sp. UNSWDHB, using a pTrcHisA vector without requiring an additional vector for vitamin B12 transporters. By co-expressing the pRSFDuet-BtuCEDFB plasmid, we further enhanced active TmrA production without relying on the T7 promoter system. Using this system, we achieved the first heterologous expression of an RDase (the debrominase Ros_A3X954) from a marine heterotrophic Roseobacter strain, without chemical cofactor reconstitution. Ros_A3X954 catalyzes conversion of 2,6-dibromophenol to 2-bromophenol with a specific activity of 21.8 ± 1.0 nmol s−1 mg−1. The enzyme exhibited optimal activity at pH 6.0 and demonstrated significant thermal stability by maintaining full catalytic capacity across a broad temperature range (20–50°C), a key advantage for applications in thermally fluctuating marine environments. These findings expand our understanding of RDase functional diversity in common marine microbiota and highlight the significant application potential of Roseobacter for bioremediation of bromophenol pollution.

Aeromonas spp. are major pathogens severely affecting the Carassius auratus gibelio farming industry. The prolonged use of enrofloxacin (Enr) has led to reduced therapeutic efficacy, drug residues, and the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Simply increasing antibiotic dosage is unsustainable, and the core challenge lies in potentiating antibiotic efficacy without dose escalation. Here, we employed combination therapy using allicin E (ALE) as a potentiator of Enr and investigated its synergistic antibacterial activity, underlying mechanisms, and protective effects against A. hydrophila in C. auratus gibelio . In vitro, the combination of Enr and ALE exhibited broad-spectrum synergistic or additive activity against multiple aquatic pathogens, rapidly eradicating A. hydrophila without regrowth during the observation period. Mechanistically, the combination triggered a burst of bacterial reactive oxygen species (1.67-fold vs. control), leading to irreversible membrane damage and leakage of intracellular contents, and significantly inhibited biofilm formation and disrupted mature biofilms. In vivo, oral administration of the combination in C. auratus gibelio challenged with A. hydrophila significantly improved survival (66.6% vs. 26.6% in model), reduced bacterial loads in liver, spleen and kidney (by 70.9%, 81.3% and 72.9%, respectively, vs. model group), and mitigated oxidative damage by restored antioxidant enzymes (T-SOD, CAT) activity, decrease MDA, as well as attenuated inflammatory infiltration and hemorrhage in spleen and kidney tissues. This is the first report of ALE potentiating Enr against A. hydrophila via a synergistic ROS-mediated membrane damage, validated in C. auratus gibelio , with approximately 50% Enr reduction potential.
