Synthesis, Thermal Properties and Sensitivity of Ladder-Like Nitrocellulose Grafted by Polyethylene Glycol

Xiangjun Meng,Zhenggang Xiao

The sensitivity study of propellants has been receiving heightened attentions from a lot of investigators. These propellants based on nitrocellulose are sensitive to accidental stimuli that result in catastrophic accidents. Thus energetic thermoplastic elastomers have been used as binders to replace some nitrocellulose to prepare insensitive high energy propellants. However, some defects are presented in the application of these binders. Based on the reason above, a novel binder named as step ladder-like nitrocellulose was synthesized by isophorone diisocyanate reacting with free hydroxyl groups of nitrocellulose first, and then reacting with polyethylene glycol. The reaction product was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA, DSC and sensitivity tests. Results show that step ladder-like nitrocellulose is successfully synthesized from nitrocellulose, and it has a quasi-spherical shape and regular crystal structure. Furthermore, the thermal weight loss course of step ladder-like nitrocellulose is relatively gentle in the range of 175–450 °C and its mechanical sensitivity is less than that of raw nitrocellulose.

A γ-Boehmite Nanowhiskers - Polyethylene Glycol 10000/Polyethylene Separator for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yuanxin Man,Hui Nan,Jianzhe Ma,Zhike Li,Xianlan Wang,Pan Yang,Caihong Xue,Jingyuan Zhou,Heqi Li

Graphical Polyethylene glycol 10000 (PEG-10000) was selected as a dispersant for γ-AlOOH nanowhiskers in the PE coating slurry. The AlOOH-PEG/PE separator maintains its structural integrity even after a 0.5 hour test at 200 degrees Celsius, and lithium-ion battery half-cells assembled with it exhibited a capacity of 73.9 % at a 5 C rate. In this study, a γ-boehmite (γ-AlOOH) – PEG/polyethylene (PE) lithium-ion battery separator was fabricated using a dip-coating method, with γ-AlOOH nanowhiskers being synthesized directly through a hydrothermal process, and polyethylene glycol 10000 (PEG-10000) was chosen for the first time as a dispersant for the γ-AlOOH nanowhiskers in the PE coating slurry{Lee, 2014 #7}. Simultaneously, the membrane's performance was characterized, confirming the significant dispersion effect of PEG-10000, resulting in a porosity as high as 64 % in the AlOOH-PEG/PE, a substantial increase compared to the PE separator (40 %). The AlOOH-PEG/PE separator maintains its structural integrity even after a 0.5 h test at 200 °C, showcasing outstanding stability and significantly improved safety. Besides, the LIB half cells assembled with the PE/AlOOH-PEG separator exhibited remarkable performance, with a capacity of 73.9 % in power capability (at 5 C rate) and a 97.1 % discharge capacity retention rates in cycle performance (after 400 cycles, at 2 C rate). Furthermore, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) batteries utilizing the AlOOH-PEG/PE separator demonstrated significantly enhanced cycling stability and rate capacity.

Dynamics of CO2 Absorption and Desorption Processes in Alkanolamine with Cosolvent Polyethylene Glycol

Jun Li,Chenjia You,Lifang Chen,Yinmei Ye,Zhiwen Qi,Kai Sundmacher

To reduce the high energy consumption and equipment corrosion in conventional processes of CO2 capture with aqueous amine solutions, the mixed nonaqueous solvents of monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), and diglycolamine (DGA) with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as cosolvent were explored for CO2 capture. The dynamic experiments of CO2 absorption and desorption were carried out to evaluate the performance of the studied nonaqueous solutions. It demonstrated that the mixed solutions of amines and PEG exhibited higher CO2 cyclic capacity and regeneration efficiency compared with the only aqueous amine solutions. Especially, the solution of 3 mol/L DGA-PEG200 exhibits a high cyclic capacity of 0.438 mol CO2/mol DGA and a high regeneration efficiency of 94.6%, which indicates its great potential in industrial application. Moreover, the very low vapor pressure of PEG helps the mixed solution for CO2 capture with reduced corrosion, energy consumption, and environmental pollution.

Facile synthesis and micellization of biodegradable poly(decamethylene succinate)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol)

Guixiang Zhu,Ying Wang,Weipu Zhu,Kui Zhu,Xiaoyan Xu,Zhiquan Shen

In this article, we report the facile one-pot synthesis of poly(decamethylene succinate) (PDS) with multiple hydroxyl groups by direct polycondensation with malic acid (MA) as the functional monomer and dysprosium triflate as the chemoselective catalyst at 80°C. The secondary hydroxyl groups of malic units were inactive during the polycondensation process. The density of hydroxyl groups of the copolymer could be well-controlled by the molar ratio of succinic acid and MA in the feed. These hydroxylated PDSs were grafted by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) through a simple esterification reaction; this resulted in amphiphilic PDS- g -PEG copolymers, which could undergo micellization in aqueous media to form nanosized aggregates with diverse morphologies and diameters. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fusiform Micelles from Nonlinear Poly(ethylene glycol)/Polylactide Copolymers as Biodegradable Drug Carriers

Taihang Li,Ruiyan Han,Mingzhe Wang,Changbai Liu,Xiabin Jing,Yubin Huang

PEG-PLA copolymers with dumbbell- and Y-shaped structures are prepared. They can self-assemble from nanoparticles to micro-sized fusiform micellar particles in aqueous solution. In particular the micelles formed by the (PLA) 2 -PEG-(PLA) 2 particles show a better drug loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency than those formed by linear MPEG-PLA. In vitro studies show that the particles formed by Y-shaped copolymers show a particularly quick drug release. The copolymers have good biocompatibility with low cytotoxicity. These unique self-assembled systems thus have many possible biomedical applications, such as a sustained delivery of high-dosed water insoluble drugs, quick effective drugs for trauma, controlled delivery of the oral-administration drugs, and so forth.

Glucosamine-modified polyethylene glycol hydrogel-mediated chondrogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells

Hang Yao,Jingchen Xue,Qunfang Wang,Renjian Xie,Weichang Li,Sa Liu,Jinglei Cai,Dajiang Qin,Dong-An Wang,Li Ren

Glucosamine (GA) is an important cartilage matrix precursor for the glycosaminoglycan biochemical synthesis, and has positive effects on cartilage regeneration, particularly in osteoarthritis therapy. However, it has not been used as a bioactive group in scaffolds for cartilage repair widely. In this study, we synthesized modified polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel with glucosamine and then encapsulated human bone mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) in the hydrogel to induce the differentiation of hBMSCs into chondrocytes in three-dimensional culture. The GA-modified PEG hydrogels promoted the chondrogenesis of hBMSCs, particularly in the concentration of 5   mM and 10   mM. The subcutaneous transplantation of 10   mM GA-modified hydrogels with hBMSCs formed cartilage-like blocks in vivo for 8   weeks. Importantly, with glucosamine increase, the modified hydrogels down-regulated the fibrosis and hypertrophic cartilage markers in protein level. Therefore, glucosamine modified PEG hydrogels facilitated the chondrogenesis of hBMSCs, which might represent a new method for cartilage repair using a tissue-engineering approach.

pH-Responsive Poly(Ethylene Glycol)-block-Polylactide Micelles for Tumor-Targeted Drug Delivery

Lin Xiao,Lixia Huang,Firmin Moingeon,Mario Gauthier,Guang Yang

A biodegradable micellar drug delivery system with a pH-responsive sheddable PEG shell was developed using an acetal-linked poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polylactide (PEG-a-PLA) copolymer and applied to the tumoral release of paclitaxel (PTX). The micelles with a diameter of ∼100 nm were stable in PBS at pH 7.4, started shedding the shell and aggregating slowly at pH 6.5, and decomposed faster at pH 5.5. PTX-loaded micelles (M-PTX) with a drug loading of 6.9 wt % exhibited pH-triggered PTX release in simulated tumoral acidic environments corresponding to the extracellular and intracellular spaces. In vitro experiments showed that the micelles were noncytotoxic to different cell lines, while M-PTX inhibited the proliferation and promoted the apoptosis of Hela cells. An in vivo study with Hela tumor-bearing mice indicated that M-PTX efficiently inhibited tumor growth. Because of these properties, the PEG-a-PLA micellar system appears to have bright prospects as a tumor-targeting drug carrier.

Preparation and performance analysis of polyethylene glycol/epoxy resin composite phase change material

Xu Guo,Kun Wei,Tengfei Ni,Wenshuo Shi,Chenxi Dai,Zhanfan Zhao,Zhanpeng Gu

It is crucial for their widespread application to develop phase change materials (PCMs) that can be mass-produced and possess high thermal storage capacity and stability. This study uses polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the phase change material and epoxy resin as the matrix to prepare polyethylene glycol/epoxy resin composite phase change materials (EPPCM) by blending and analyzing the effects of PEG's molecular weight and content on EPPCM's performance. The results indicate that PEG and epoxy resin are physically blended without chemical reaction. When the molecular weight of PEG is fixed, the larger the content of PEG, the higher the crystallinity , phase change enthalpy value , and phase change temperature of EPPCM, and the weaker the thermal cyclic stability and mechanical properties. When the content of PEG is fixed, the larger the molecular weight of PEG, the higher the crystallinity, phase change enthalpy value, and phase change temperature of EPPCM, the stronger the thermal cyclic stability, and the weaker the mechanical properties. Using PEG-10000 as the PCM with a PEG to epoxy resin ratio of 1:2.5, the EPPCM shows a phase change exothermic temperature range of 33.4 °C to 45.7 °C, an endothermic temperature range of 54.3 °C to 65.4 °C, a phase change enthalpy of 130.0 J/g, and only 1.56 % mass loss after 30 phase change cycles.

Polyethylene glycol modified protamine-chlorin e6 conjugate nanoparticles for enhanced cancer photodynamic therapy

Hang Hu,Ting Yuan,Jiahao Qian,Xinya Lu,Xi Chen,Xiaoya Sun,Yuchen Lin,Yuxiang Tang,Qingbo Xu,Tianyu Zhu,Yu Hu,Defeng Xu

Photodynamic therapy attracts great attention in cancer treatment due to its minimal invasiveness, good tolerance and specific cancer targeting. However, most of tumors are hypoxic and the tumors will become more hypoxic after photodynamic therapy, which might cause the poor prognosis by inducing tumor angiogenesis. In the present work, polyethylene glycol modified protamine-chlorin e6 conjugate (PEG-protamine-Ce6) was synthesized for enhanced cancer photodynamic therapy. PEG-protamine-Ce6 was synthesized by conjugating protamine with methoxypolyethylene glycol acetaldehyde and Ce6 sequentially. The in vitro studies show that PEG-protamine-Ce6 self-assembles into nanoparticles in aqueous solution with uniform size (∼200 nm), positive zeta potential and spherical morphology. The in vitro cell studies show that PEG-protamine-Ce6 nanoparticles exhibit enhanced cellular uptake amount, intracellular ROS level elevation upon laser irradiation, cell apoptosis and photocytotoxicity as compared to Ce6. The in vivo studies show that PEG-protamine-Ce6 nanoparticles exhibit enhanced antitumor effect as compared to Ce6 upon laser irradiation. PEG-protamine-Ce6 with laser irradiation not only inhibits tumor cell proliferation, but also inhibits tumor angiogenesis by suppression of VEGF expression, whereas Ce6 with laser irradiation promotes tumor angiogenesis by enhancing VEGF expression. PEG-protamine-Ce6 nanoparticles developed in this work offer a novel nanomedicine for enhancing cancer photodynamic therapy.

Synthesizing Benzotriazole Group-Terminated Carbon Dots as Multifunctional Additives of Poly(ethylene glycol)

Shichen Mao,Baogang Wang,Shanshan Dai,Hongsheng Lu

Long running-in period and corrosion problems have greatly hindered the practical applications of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) lubricants. In this work, benzotriazole group-terminated carbon dots (BT-CDs) were specifically synthesized through a facile solvothermal method. The benzotriazole groups on BT-CD surfaces not only imparted them excellent dispersibility in the PEG base oil but also brought in outstanding anticorrosion ability for BT-CDs. With the aid of the coordination effects between benzotriazole groups and metal atoms, the BT-CDs could quickly and solidly adsorb onto the steel surface to form a dense adsorption layer, which resulted in an amazing phenomenon, i.e., the disappearance of the running-in period for the friction test. Adding 5.0 wt % BT-CDs reduced the friction and wear of PEG200 by 49.16 and 49.52%, respectively. When the duration was prolonged from 20 to 120 min, these values were further enlarged to 53.77 and 60.71%. The worn surface characterization demonstrated that the BT-CDs induced the generation of robust lubricating films on the frictional interfaces, accounting for their distinguished tribological performance. Considering the superior anticorrosion ability and the potential possibility of avoiding the running-in period, the BT-CDs are expected to be developed as particularly promising additives toward PEG.

Ionic liquid-grafted chitosan/polyethylene glycol blended membranes for efficient separation of H2S

Hao Zhu,Ping Zhang,Zhuoheng Tu,Xingbang Hu,Youting Wu

Chitosan (CS) is a potential membrane material for acid gas separation owing to its advantages of low cost, high biocompatibility, good film-forming property, and abundant amine groups. However, due to the strong hydrogen bonding network inside bulky CS, it has poor solvent processability and high membrane crystallinity leading to slow gas permeation. Herein, via alkylating primary amine on chitosan using 1-bromohexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Brhmim]Br), water-processable ionic liquid-grafted chitosan (ICS) membrane was fabricated for H 2 S separation. Furthermore, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was introduced into ICS to improve H 2 S separation performance owing to its good plasticizing ability and highly reversible hydrogen bonding interaction with H 2 S. The successful fabrication of ICS and ICS/PEG membranes was validated using various characterizations. Notably, H 2 S/CO 2 /CH 4 (20/20/60 vol%) mixed gas permeation test shows H 2 S permeability up to ∼1100 Barrer, with desired H 2 S/CH 4 (∼24) and H 2 S/CO 2 (∼11) selectivity obtained. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that both the ionic liquid and PEG have highly reversible hydrogen bonding interaction with H 2 S, which facilitates H 2 S permeation. Overall, this work proposes a novel and green method for preparing modified chitosan membranes targeting H 2 S separation, which may provide a new insight into the design of sustainable membrane materials for natural gas desulfurization.

Poly(sulfobetaine) versus poly(ethylene glycol) based copolymer modified polyurethane catheters for antifouling

Haimei Cao,Tiankuan Zhu,Henan Wei,Shiping Zhang

Polyurethane (PU) catheters are commonly used in clinical treatment. However, the hydrophobic nature of the PU catheter surface leads to adhesion or adsorption to platelets, proteins, bacteria, and other molecules when used in human treatment. To achieve a surface with strong hydrophilicity, high stability and excellent biocompatibility, it is necessary to functionalize the PU catheters. In this paper, a coating with antifouling function was constructed on the surface of PU catheters using plasma technology and an amide coupling reaction. A series of characterization methods, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angles (WCA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were used to prove the successful modification of the polymer coatings. The coatings showed good stability under conditions such as PBS (pH 7.4, 720 h), 75% ethanol (6 h) and 1 wt% SDS (10 min). Additionally, the coatings exhibit excellent hemocompatibility and antibacterial properties. The PU/PEI/PCSB coating has the best anti-fouling performance among them, which means that using the PCSB copolymer has the potential to modify different clinical catheters into highly effective antifouling coatings.
