Scalable and highly efficient bamboo whitening remains a great challenge. Herein, an effective bamboo whitening strategy is proposed based on photocatalyzed oxidation , which involves H 2 O 2 infiltration and UV illumination. The as-prepared white bamboo well maintains the nature structure of natural bamboo and demonstrates high whiteness and superior mechanical properties. The absorbance value is significantly decreased to 3.5 and the transmittance is increased to 0.04 % in UV–visible wavelength range due to the removal of light-absorbing chromospheres of lignin, resulting in a high whiteness when the UV illumination time is 8 h. In addition, the white bamboo displays a high tensile strength of 30 MPa and a high flexural strength of 36 MPa due to the well-preserved lignin units (lignin preservation is about 89 %). XRD patterns and analysis show that photocatalyzed oxidation has no effect on the crystal parameters of cellulose. Compared with the traditional bamboo whitening technology, our photocatalyzed oxidation strategy demonstrates significant advantage including chemical and time conservation, high efficiency, environment friendliness, and mechanical robustness. This highly efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalyzed oxidation strategy for the fabrication of white bamboo may pave the way of bamboo-based energy-efficient structural materials for engineering application .

Infection control remains a critical challenge in medical and environmental settings, intensified by the global rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria and the waning efficacy of conventional antibiotics. This study presents a sustainable, bioinspired strategy for antibacterial surface engineering using co -deposited coatings of alkali lignin (AL) and cationic polymers (CPs). Derived from renewable AL, the system leverages lignin's natural role as a structural adhesive in plant cell walls, and its photothermal property to enable robust surface modification. AL's polyphenolic structure enables substrate interaction and photothermal activity under near-infrared (NIR) light. High-throughput screening identified CPs that form stable, synergistic complexes with AL. Molecular dynamic simulations reveal that electrostatic interactions govern AL-CP assembly, while van der Waals forces mediate substrate adhesion. The resulting AL-CP coatings exhibit strong mechanical durability, broad substrate compatibility, and long-term chemical stability. Functionally, these coatings deliver potent antibacterial efficacy via a dual mechanism combining “contact-killing” and NIR light-triggered photothermal activation. In a clinically relevant in vivo hernia repair model, AL-CP coatings effectively prevent bacterial infections, demonstrating strong translational potential. This work establishes a green, bioinspired surface modification platform that integrates natural adhesion principles and photothermal functionality, offering a promising solution for infection-resistant interfaces.

Lignin, the most abundant aromatic polymer in nature, holds immense potential for sustainable chemical production. Deciphering lignin dissolution behavior is essential for suitable solvent selection and achieving efficient conversion. However, the high heterogeneity of lignin and the complex interaction between lignin and solvents increase the difficulty in understanding dissolution behavior. To address this issue, in this work, an intermolecular force quantification method was proposed to establish the correlation between microscopic adhesion force and macroscopic solubility using atomic force microscopy (AFM). By engineering a stable lignin-coated AFM probe/substrate system (thickness >100 nm) via electrostatic adsorption, a precise lignin adhesion force quantification system was successfully established. As adhesion forces decreased from 0.106 to 0.026 mN/m, the lignin solubility surged from 0.06 to 168.49 g/L, indicating a strong relevance. Therefore, the lignin solubility can be readily evaluated via adhesion force quantification. Strikingly, a universal critical adhesion force (0.43 mN/m) across diverse lignin types (enzymatic hydrolysis lignin; alkaline lignin) and solvent systems (γ-valerolactone (GVL)/H2O, dioxane/H2O, acetone/H2O) has been identified, beyond which negligible dissolution occurs. This constant serves as a quantitative ″dissolution threshold″, offering a rapid tool to screen optimal solvents. This work bridges intermolecular force quantification with solubility prediction, advancing rational solvent design for lignin valorization.

Synthetic polymers are widespread in modern life and pose growing environmental problems, especially in agriculture, where water management and soil health are crucial. Eco-friendly materials that balance performance and environmental safety are desperately needed as sustainable alternatives remain understudied. This study emphasizes the potential of lignin, a naturally occurring, abundant, and underutilized biopolymer, and its conversion into lignin-based hydrogels. Lignin hydrogels offer distinct benefits for agricultural applications due to their inherent antibacterial, biodegradable, and biocompatible properties. Their ability to swell improves soil water retention, promotes plant development in drought-prone areas, and permits regulated release of fertilizer. Lignin-based hydrogels can promote sustainable agricultural methods and lessen the dependency on synthetic polymers by customizing these characteristics. This study points to potential advances in green polymer technology by highlighting their capacity to bridge the gap between environmental stewardship and agricultural production.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation requires photothermal materials that combine efficient solar absorption, continuous water transport, and resistance to salt accumulation. Herein, a lignin nanoparticle-reinforced chitosan hydrogel evaporator (LPCH) was constructed by integrating alkali lignin nanoparticles into a chemically cross-linked chitosan network. The uniformly dispersed lignin nanoparticles functioned as photothermal and nanoreinforcing domains, enhancing light harvesting and increasing the surface temperature to 39.5 °C under 1 sun irradiation. Interactions between the hydroxyl-rich lignin nanoparticles and chitosan regulated the water state within the hydrogel network, increasing the intermediate-water-to-free-water ratio from 0.35 for the chitosan hydrogel (CS) to 1.24 for LPCH and lowering the equivalent evaporation enthalpy to 2085 J g −1 . The optimized LPCH evaporator achieved an evaporation rate of 2.77 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun irradiation, together with an apparent solar-to-vapor efficiency of 152.4%. It retained an evaporation rate of 2.29 kg m −2 h −1 in 10 wt% saline water and maintained continuous operation over 10 h in simulated seawater. Outdoor tests using real seawater produced a peak evaporation rate of 3.47 kg m −2 h −1 and a daytime average rate of 2.38 kg m −2 h −1 . These results demonstrate a sustainable strategy for combining lignin-derived photothermal conversion, water-state regulation, and structural reinforcement in biomass-based solar evaporators.

C-lignin is a linear aromatic biopolymer with a uniform structure and acid resistance formed by catechol monomers linked through unique benzodioxane bonds. Compared to the heterogeneous guaiacyl (G)/syringyl (S)-lignin, the homogeneous nature of C-lignin enables its efficient depolymerization into a single catechol product, making it more suitable for downstream processing. This study investigated effects of various Brønsted acids and Lewis acids in a dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) /H 2 O co-solvent system on the C-lignin extraction from castor shells. Results show H 2 SO 4 assisted DMI/H 2 O co-solvent enables the most efficient disassembly of C-lignin containing sample with a yield of 95 mg/g castor shells. Quantitative 13 C NMR analysis indicates that the molar concentration of caffeyl alcohol units in the lignin is 2.06 μmol/mg, corresponding to 34.2 % C-lignin by weight at 120 °C within 2 h. The obtained C-lignin can be selectively converted to catechol derivatives (yield: 89 mol%) via Pd/C catalysis. This study demonstrates efficient pretreatment and utilization of C-lignin, offering a promising potential approach for its industrial uses.

Lignin, one of the most abundant yet underutilized biopolymers, offers strong potential for sustainable adhesive development but is limited by poor reactivity and water resistance. Here, we report a scalable, green two-step valorization strategy to transform kraft lignin into tannin-like adhesives with underwater bonding capabilities. Microwave-assisted depolymerization in isopropanol efficiently cleaved β-O-4 linkages, yielding low-molecular-weight oligomers with improved reactivity. Subsequent phenolic functionalization using resorcinol in an acidic deep eutectic solvent selectively formed Cα-CAr linkages, increasing the phenolic hydroxyl content by 56.6%, as confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 2D-HSQC NMR. The functionalized lignins were cross-linked with epoxidized soybean oil and malic acid to prepare fully biobased adhesives. The resulting materials exhibited high thermal stability (onset at 325 °C), excellent dry-state lap shear strength (3.3 MPa on aluminum), and remarkable water resistance, retaining 87% of bonding strength after 24 h immersion. Furthermore, dynamic ester bonds imparted intrinsic self-healing properties, enabling recovery of 71 and 64% of tensile strength under dry and wet conditions, respectively, after five damage-healing cycles. This work provides a sustainable platform for lignin valorization into high-performance adhesives, contributing to green chemistry and engineering principles and enabling applications in underwater repair, structural bonding, and eco-friendly packaging.

Maximizing the valorization of renewable resources to develop bio-composite materials is crucial for advancing environmental sustainability and ensuring food chain security. In this study, lignin-containing nanocelluloses (LCNs), derived from passion fruit husk using a combination of deep eutectic solvent (DES) and ultra-high-pressure homogenization (UHPH), were incorporated as nanocellulose into a chitosan matrix to produce innovative bioactive packaging films. The results indicated that the inclusion of LCNs improved the water resistance performance and the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films. The tensile strength of the composite films significantly increased, while the elongation at break decreased. Moreover, the presence of LCNs notably enhanced UV shielding properties of the composite films, particularly in the short-wavelength UVC (200–280 nm) and medium-wavelength UVB (280–315 nm) regions. The banana preservation test further demonstrated that the chitosan-LCN composite films effectively inhibited bacterial growth and extended the shelf life of bananas at room temperature. Thus, these composite films offer a promising and sustainable solution for the high-value commercial use of agricultural by-products and chitosan in food packaging applications.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a primary culprit in skin aging and cancer development. Inorganic UV filters, including ZnO and TiO2, are typical antiultraviolet agents in sunscreen, but they lack antioxidant activity for scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). Inspired by the UV shielding mechanism of plant cell wall lamellar structures, a 2D/2D ZnO/dealkali lignin (DL) nanosheet composite was prepared using an in situ templating method. Various mass ratios of DL to ZnCl2 were adjusted to investigate the effect of DL addition on UV shielding. The results show that ZnO/DL-1.5% effectively shields ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation due to the hydrogen bonding interaction between ZnO and DL, rendering the exposure of the (002) plane of ZnO, which increases the scattering and absorption of photons. Additionally, the ZnO/DL nanosheet composite scavenges excessive reactive nitrogen species and ROS at low concentrations, as the phenolic hydroxyl groups in DL donate electrons to neutralize free radicals, thereby terminating radical chain reactions. This ZnO/DL nanosheet composite, with antiultraviolet and antioxidant functions, can be considered a promising and safe ingredient for sunscreen cream.

Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), a two-dimensional adsorbent material, has garnered great attention in removing lead ions (Pb 2+ ) from water due to their extensive exposed adsorption sites. However, WS 2 nanosheets inevitably agglomerated and stacked during the preparation and adsorption process, leading to reduced adsorption efficiency. Current method of enhancing WS 2 dispersion is mainly blending with synthetic polymers, but these synthetic polymers themselves do not possess adsorption properties, resulting adsorption effect enhancement poorly. Here, lignin extracted from walnut shells (WS) was intercalated into bulk WS 2 to prepare highly dispersible Lignin/WS 2 composites with synergistic adsorption effects. The spatial resistance and electrostatic repulsion of the intercalated lignin effectively exfoliated bulk WS 2 and stabilized their dispersion. The synergistic adsorption arises from lignin’s oxygen-containing groups and WS 2 nanosheets’ sulfur-rich surface, which significantly enhanced Pb 2 + removal (∼66.9 mg/g). This value surpassed pure lignin and bulk WS 2 by 1.7 and 25.0 times, respectively. Adsorption follows pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption of Pb 2+ by the Lignin/WS 2 composite belongs to multi molecular layer chemical adsorption. This work provides a novel strategy for lignin-based adsorbents in water remediation.

A new lignin depolymerization approach for improving the yield of aromatic monomers (YAM) by enzymolysis pretreatment was investigated, in which lignin was pretreated with laccase followed by oxidative depolymerization. It was found that lignin depolymeirzation was enhanced significantly by enzymolysis. The oxidative depolymerization contributed to 21.37% of YAM after the enzymolysis pretreatment , whereas the conventional oxidative depolymerization only gave 14.10% of YAM. The addition of ethanol in enzymatic pretreatment process improved the efficiency of enzymolysis, which effectively improved the solubility of pretreated lignin and depolymerization degree (DD) of lignin. The enzymolysis pretreatment increased the content of syringyl (S) style aromatic monomers, which hindered the recondensation among polymerized products. As lignin has low solubility in acidic aqueous solution, ethanol was added into enzymolysis system to improve the efficiency. However, the enzymolysis of lignin should be carried out for a limited period of time to prevent the inactivation of laccase.

A series of lignin-based waterborne polyurethanes (ELWPUs) are prepared using epichlorohydrin-modified lignin (ELG) as the biobased component. The effect of ELG dosage on the performance of the dispersions was studied by particle sizing. The morphology, crystallinity, thermal behavior, water resistance and mechanical properties of the films were investigated as well. The results show that the particle size of ELWPU dispersions increased with the addition of ELG. Furthermore, the ELWPU exhibited noticeable thermal stability, desired mechanical properties and water resistance as the tensile strength of ELWPU film containing 0.25 wt% ELG increased to 40.6 MPa from 15.2 MPa and the water absorption rate decreased from 20.1 to 12.4% compared to the non-modified waterborne polyurethane. The ELG played an important role in improving the properties of the biomass-based materials.
