Enhancing the HRPSoC Cycling Performance of Pure Lead Foil Lead-Acid Batteries Using Lysine as an Electrolyte Additive

Min Hu,Yi Liu,Jing Cao,Sha Zhou,Xiaoyu Ma

In this study, lysine (Lys) was used as an electrolyte additive for lead acid batteries (LABs), with pure lead foil replacing the conventional negative grid to regulate electrode-electrolyte interface reactions. The lysine molecule significantly enhanced the solubility of PbSO 4 by binding with Pb 2+ ions and promoted the diffusion of electrolyte into the electrode plate. This finally increased electrode redox activity, reduced plate resistance, and effectively suppressed irreversible sulfation in the battery. The HRPSoC cycle life of the battery extended to 12,588 cycles at a lysine concentration of 0.03 mol·L -1 , representing a 3.9-fold increase compared to the blank battery (without electrolyte additive). The hydrogen evolution current density at -1.6 V potential decreased from 0.0210 A·g -1 to 0.0073 A·g -1 as determined by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). Through comparing the effects of other amino acids with same amino/carboxyl functional groups but different alkyl chain lengths on battery performance, the relationship between lysine's functional group composition and its enhancement of lead-acid battery performance was investigated, further revealing its mechanism of action. Results indicate that the alkyl chain length of amino acids inversely correlates with the enhancement of lead-acid battery cycle life at identical electrolyte additive concentrations. Shorter alkyl chains significantly suppress irreversible sulfation in batteries, which promotes the conversion between lead sulfate and lead.

Tailoring the lithium-ion solvation sheath via bioinspired Zein/Lysine additives: a combined spectroscopic and molecular dynamics study

Fangshuo Zhou,Chen Wang,Ge Zhang,Xinyue Zhao,Kanghou Ma,Sunfa Wang,Huangxi Qiang,Ningning Wu,Yaohui Zhang

A biomimetic dual-additive strategy using zein and lysine synergistically reshapes the Li + solvation structure. • Lysine competitively enters the primary solvation sheath, displacing carbonate solvents. • A distinctive “clustered yet conductive” solvation architecture confines PF 6 - anions within dynamic aggregates. • This architecture simultaneously delivers a high Li + transference number and a dramatically reduced desolvation barrier. • The bio-additive-derived SEI enables dendrite-free Li plating and stable full-cell cycling. The high Li + desolvation barrier and uncontrolled ion-pair aggregation in conventional carbonate electrolytes severely limit the performance of lithium metal batteries. Inspired by biological ion channels, we propose a biomimetic dual-additive strategy employing zein (corn protein) and lysine to regulate the Li + solvation environment. Molecular dynamics simulations and spectroscopic analyses reveal that lysine competitively enters the primary solvation sheath, displacing carbonate solvents, while zein amide groups further modulate the solvation architecture. This restructuring forms a unique “clustered yet conductive” solvation architecture, in which lysine bridges confine PF 6 - anions within dynamic aggregates, significantly suppressing anion mobility and elevating the Li + transference number to 0.88. The architecture simultaneously lowers the interfacial desolvation barrier and facilitates the formation of a robust, dendrite-suppressing solid electrolyte interphase derived from the bio-additives. Consequently, the lithium metal anode delivers stable cycling for over 600 h, and the Li||LiFePO 4 (LFP) full cell retains approximately 87% capacity after 500 cycles at 0.5C. This work demonstrates a sustainable solvation-engineering paradigm based on abundant biomolecules, highlighting the concept of “clustered yet conductive” coordination for next-generation high-energy–density batteries. Mechanically robust and highly hydrated curcumin-loaded lysine-crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels for steroid-free atopic dermatitis treatment

Zhang Xinyan,Zhou Jingqiu,Han Xue,Xing Xu,Yang Kun,Wu Tao,Li Hao,Hao Xujia,Du Qiang,Liu Xinwei,Gong Tianxing,Leng Hongrui,Wei Shibo

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) exhibits excellent biocompatibility and water retention, yet its high hydrophilicity often leads to excessive swelling and poor mechanical stability in physiological environments, limiting its utility in topical skin therapies. In this study, we developed a robust, chemically crosslinked CMC-based hydrogel loaded with curcumin (Cur@CL) using natural lysine as a non-toxic crosslinker. This green crosslinking strategy significantly reinforced the hydrogel network, achieving a swelling ratio of 3074 ± 226% and a compressive stress of 20.06 ± 1.0 kPa. The Cur@CL hydrogel demonstrated a sustained curcumin release profile of 83.98 ± 5.68% over 144 h, ensuring prolonged local bioavailability. In vitro, Cur@CL exhibited excellent cytocompatibility with L929 fibroblasts, accelerated fibroblast-associated wound closure, and reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels by 62.97%. Furthermore, in a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced atopic dermatitis (AD) mouse model, topical application of Cur@CL significantly alleviated clinical symptoms, reducing epidermal thickening by 71.5% compared with the DNCB-challenged model group, with no detectable systemic toxicity. This study presents a simple, tunable, and eco-friendly cellulose-based hydrogel platform for the effective, non-steroidal management of AD.

The effect of Arginine, Lysine and Histidine in the myosin secondary structure by circular dichroism and Raman spectroscopy

Tong Shi,Li Yuan,Jianlou Mu,Ruichang Gao

Amino acids containing L-Arginine (Arg), L-Lysine (Lys) and L-Histidine (His) are recognized to increase the solubility of myosin at low ionic strength, but there is a difference in the researchers’ views on their effects on the secondary structure of myosin. To elucidate which method is relatively appropriate for the determination of secondary structures of myosin added with Arg, Lys or His, Circular dichroism (CD) spectra and Raman spectroscopy were carried out respectively. Raman spectroscopy was more suitable than CD method for determination of the secondary structures of myosin added with His, while CD spectra was more accurate for the myosin samples added with Lys and the adequate concentration of Lys should be under 10 mM. Both CD and Raman methods could be applied to myosin added with Arg, however, the latter was recommended and the adequate additive content of Arg in CD method should be less than 10 mM.

A voltammetry sensor platform for environmental pollution detection based on simultaneous electropolymerisation of L-lysine and β-cyclodextrin

Yudong Gao

A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with simultaneous electropolymerisation of L-lysine (L-lys) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) film (P-β-CD-L-lys/GCE) is proposed as a novel electrochemical platform for the detection of pymetrozine. The electrochemical activity of P-β-CD-L-lys/GCE towards pymetrozine was investigated using cyclic voltammetry experiments in 0.1 M H2SO4. The potential utility of the sensor was demonstrated by applying it to the analytical determination of pymetrozine concentration using linear sweep voltammetry. The linear in the range of 4.0 × 10−8 to 1.0 × 10−6 mol L−1. The detection limit of pymetrozine was found to be 1.3 × 10−8 mol L−1 (S/N = 3). Using this method, we successfully got satisfactory results of pymetrozine in real sample analysis. This work promoted the potential applications of amino acid materials and β-cyclodextrin in environmental analytical chemistry.

A novel sol-gel coating via catechol/lysine polymerization for long-lasting corrosion protection of Mg alloy AZ31

Jiao Li,Tianshu Li,Yanwei Zeng,Changcheng Chen,Honglei Guo,Bing Lei,Ping Zhang,Zhiyuan Feng,Guozhe Meng

Magnesium alloys are widely used in aerospace and automobile industries because of their lightweight and high strength properties . However, the occurrence of surface corrosion limits their application. Among the protection methods of magnesium alloys, the sol-gel method has received a growing attention recently because of its green economy, high efficiency, and stability. However, the sol-gel method cannot provide corrosion protection for an extended duration in saline solutions. In this study, a novel sol-gel coating via catechol/lysine (CA/Lys) polymerization has been prepared via a facile method and systematically investigated. The CA/Lys co-deposition process was studied by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. Corrosion performances of the coating were evaluated in aqueous 0.1 M NaCl by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and hydrogen evolution measurements. The experimental results showed that the CA/Lys-modified sol-gel coating provided corrosion protection for up to 18 days, while the unmodified sol-gel coating failed after only 3 days of testing. The polymerized CA/Lys was adsorbed by and then diffused into the sol-gel coating by filling in the macropores or nanopores and the nano-SiO 2 cross-linked network, greatly improving the compactness of the coating. In addition, albeit the thickness of CA/Lys modified coating being only 9 µm, this material was able to provide a long-lasting corrosion protection. This study introduced a novel approach to greatly improve the corrosion resistance of the sol-gel film for magnesium alloys by adopting phenolamines to modify the sol-gel for anticorrosion. This approach can provide a new strategy for Mg alloy corrosion protection.

Efficient production of ε-poly-l-lysine using cassava starch and fish meal by Streptomyces albulus FQC-24

Yi Zhang,Jing Bai,Chenqi Wu,Yue Wang,Xin Ju,Xin Qi,Liangzhi Li,Lilian Ji,Jiaolong Fu

ε-Poly-l-lysine (ε-PL) is used as a natural food preservative which consists of l-lysine units connected. However, due to the expensive culture medium, the production cost of ε-PL remains high. In this study, cheap raw materials cassava starch (CS) and fish meal (FM) were employed by S. albulus FQC-24 for ε-PL production. In the single factor experiment, the maximum ε-PL production reached 0.97 g/L at 60 g/L CS and 15 g/L FM. The results of screening experiments by Plackett–Burman design showed that three main components affecting ε-PL production were CS, FM, and (NH4)2SO4. And the standardized effects of CS, FM, and (NH4)2SO4 were 0.13, −0.22, and −0.2, respectively. The optimum fermentation medium developed by response surface methodology for ε-PL production contained (g/L) CS, 67.56; FM, 14.70 and (NH4)2SO4, 5.41. Under the optimum conditions, the ε-PL production was achieved 1.30 g/L, with 34.02% higher than that before optimization. Moreover, ε-PL productions of batch and fed-batch fermentation in a 7-L fermentor were improved to 2.13 and 17.17 g/L respectively, which increased by 0.64 and 12.2 times compared with the shake flask culture. The results indicated that FM and CS are promising substrates for the efficient production of ε-PL.

Ratiometric fluorescent carbon dots for enantioselective sensing of L-lysine and pH discrimination in vivo and in vitro

Dan Chang,Zhonghua Zhao,Hu Shi,Jianyang Feng,Yongxing Yang,Lihong Shi

Ratiometric fluorescent probes with wavelength-resolved dual target sensing capacity are highly desirable for the simultaneous recognition of target objects. A novel fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with a yield of 32% was simply synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of neutral red and urea, resulting in discrete dual-emission bands (440 nm/542 nm) under single-wavelength excitation of 380 nm. It was discovered that the fluorescence (FL) signal of CDs at 440 nm enhances with the addition of L -Lysine, whereas the FL intensity at 542 nm remains invariable. Surprisingly, no significant luminescence response is observed after the addition of D -Lysine, implying that as-prepared CDs can serve as fluorescent nanoprobes for chiral recognition of Lysine. On the contrary, it was discovered that the FL band at 542 nm is highly sensitive to pH in linear ranges of 2.0–3.4 and 3.4–8.0, while the FL band at 440 nm is inert to it, providing an effective tool for the ratiometric detection of pH in a “turn-on” mode. Confocal imaging experiments further verify that this nanoprobe can monitor L -Lysine and pH fluctuations in biological systems in real time using ratiometric methods. We believe that our research will provide new insight into the suitable construction of prompt and straightforward ratiometric fluorescent probes for the simultaneous differentiation of two analytes .

Poly-l-lysine derivative-coated black phosphorus as a nanoplatform for photothermal chemotherapy to enhance anti-tumor efficiency

Anning Li,Siqi Wang,Zhiqiang Zhang,Na Xu,Guixia Ling,Peng Zhang

Severe systemic toxicity and side effects are major obstacles to the success of chemotherapy for tumors. Regardless of the choice of chemotherapy drugs, the safety of drug delivery materials is crucial, and therefore, there have been various efforts to improve the therapeutic effect and the biological safety of drug delivery systems (DDSs). In this study, a dual stimulus-response DDS (PLL-SS@DOX-BP) was constructed based on the biomaterials of black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets and poly-l-lysine (PLL) to enhance the treatment of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) for breast cancer. The PLL derivative was nano-coated on the surface of drug-loaded BP nanosheets, and it prevented premature leakage of the drug and maintained the stability of the DDS. The introduced disulfide bonds and photothermal agent BP enabled the redox and near-infrared responsive drug release of the DDS, and the coated PLL derivative on the nanocarrier decreased premature leakage of the drug before the DDS reached the tumor tissues. The in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the combination of biomaterial (PLL) and photothermal material (BP nanosheets) exhibited excellent biological safety and remarkable drug delivery capacity. Moreover, the pharmacodynamic studies indicated that PLL-SS@DOX-BP is a powerful vehicle for photothermal therapy in combination with chemotherapy. Compared with chemotherapy alone, the developed DDS displayed enhanced anti-tumor efficiency with decreased systemic toxicity, and thus, it has the potential to be a promising anti-tumor treatment strategy.

Injectable and antibacterial ε-poly(l-lysine)-modified poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/AgNPs hydrogels as wound healing dressings

Xu Yang,Baolong Wang,Di Sha,Yonggang Liu,Jiuduo Xu,Kai Shi,Cong Yu,Xiangling Ji

A series of injectable and antibacterial hydrogels based on ε-poly ( l -lysine)-modified poly (vinyl alcohol) (CPVA- g -EPL)/chitosan (CS)/Ag complexes was fabricated using oxidized dextran as a crosslinker. As-prepared hydrogels CPVA- g -EPL/CS exhibited swelling ratios of approximately 33.9–55.4 g g −1 and macroporous structure with average pore size of 54–102 μm in dry state. The concentration of bacteria ( Escherichia. coli and Staphylococcus. aureus ) after treating with hydrogels for 4 h decreased by four orders of magnitude compared with that after blank control treatment, indicating excellent antibacterial property. After adding Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), the antibacterial activities of hydrogels (i.e., CPVA- g -EPL/CS/AgNPs) were further enhanced. Moreover, the prepared hydrogels possessed good biocompatibility against the mouse fibroblast. In a mouse skin defect model, histological examination showed increased thickness, integrity of the epidermal tissue and formation of the collagen fibers, implying that these hydrogels remarkably accelerated the wound healing process. Thus, this kind of injectable hydrogel can be a good candidate as wound healing dressings applied in wound therapy.

Sensitive Voltammetric Sensor for Evaluation of trans-resveratrol Levels in Wines based on Poly(L-lysine) Modified Electrode

Congming Li,Zhou Yanli,Ye Baoxian,Xu Maotian

Abstract A novel, economic, and highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the determination of trans -resveratrol ( RES ) was fabricated by electropolymerization of poly(L-lysine) films onto glassy carbon electrode ( GCE ) surface. The electrochemical behavior of RES in Britton–Robinson buffer solution (pH 2.0) on the poly(L-lysine)/GCE was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry for the first time. Results showed that the detection range of the proposed sensor to RES was from 0.20 to 12.0 μM with the minimum detectable concentration of 0.06 μM. The reported electrochemical sensor also exhibited high selectivity, good reproducibility, and long-term stability for RES detection. In addition, the proposed method can be employed for the determination of RES in red wines with satisfactory results. The proposed electrochemical strategy presents valuable information related to evaluation of RES levels in real samples.

Enhanced proton conductivity in a Cu-BTC thin-film membrane through lysine incorporation and a mixed matrix membrane

Yuan Gao,Bo Liu,Hanlu Xu,Caixia Shi,Ning Yan,Shaorong Wang,Rongli Jiang

To meet the growing demand for clean and sustainable energy, the development of high-performance proton conductive materials is crucial for practical applications in PEMFCs. However, the current materials suffer from issues such as low conductivity, poor durability, and unclear structure–activity relationship. To address these challenges, we investigate the proton conductivity properties of lysine-decorated Cu-BTC (where BTC is benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) and its corresponding thin-film membrane. We explore the impact of lysine (Lys) content (10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, and 40 wt%) on the proton conductivity performance under varying humidity and temperature conditions. Our findings show that Cu-BTC-Lys (40 wt%) exhibits the best conductivity of 1.2 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C under 100% relative humidity (RH), aided by an activation energy (Ea) of 0.25 eV facilitating proton transfer through hydrogen-bonding networks via the Grotthuss mechanism. We then create a proton conductive membrane by fabricating Cu-BTC-Lys (40 wt%) with the PVP/PVDF polymeric matrix. The resulting Cu-BTC-Lys@PVP/PVDF-20 membrane shows a significantly improved conductivity of 4.8 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C under 100% RH, along with a decreasing Ea value of 0.15 eV. The membrane retains its rich hydrogen-bonding networks and excellent performance durability for up to 5 days, making it an ideal candidate for real-life applications.
